-410 après J.-C : https://www.tallandier.com/livre/histoire-des-guerres-romaines-2/➤ Merci à Histoire Magazine de nous avoir permis de faire cet entretien ! 2000 years ago, in the year 9 AD, a Roman Army walked into a trap deep in wilds of Germania. Over 15,000 men were massacred at Teutoburg Forest, making it one of the bloodiest ambushes in history. But what happened next? Today's episode of the Ancients continues the terrifying story we began last week, as Tristan Hughes is joined by a host of leading experts to analyse the moves that played out on the battlefield, and the earth-shattering consequences that came after.Presented by Tristan Hughes. In AD 9 Rome lost three legions in an attack made by Germanic tribes. It became an infamous event in Rome's history dealing a huge blow both to its manpower and prestige. So how had this come to be? In the first of two episodes on this event I'm joined by Dr Jo Ball who is an expert on the Teutoburg Disaster. Dr Ball discusses the battlefield (including her work there) and then we turn to the main characters involved. What was Rome trying to achieve here and who exactly was Varus, the Roman governor? Finally it's the turn of Arminius - do we know why he betrayed Rome? Dr Ball provides insight at every turn, it's a must listen. Part Two, where Dr Ball unwraps the events of the disaster, will be out soon. Don't forget to rate and review, it really helps indie podcasters like me. Music by Brakhage (Le Vrai Instrumental).

Today in Western Europe, there is a line that divides speakers of Germanic languages and speakers of Romance languages. While that line has shifted over time, its existence can be traced back to a battle that took place over 2000 years ago. That battle rocked the Roman Empire to its core, and finally set limits for how big the empire could grow.
Germanicus, son of Drusus, the golden boy! As remarkable as his father in so many ways, he made his name campaigning across the Rhine just like dad, and managed to recover lost Eagles, to give a proper burial to the Roman dead at Teutoburg, and to teach Arminimus a lesson. Perhaps he did too much in fact, inspiring jealousy in his adopted father, the Emperor Tiberius, and a suspicion that would bring about his early, tragic demise.

The year was 9 CE. Autumn winds, rain, and cool air blew through the trees of western Germania's forests. The waters of the Rhine River were beginning their annual swell in the wake of summer's heat. Though the autumns of Germania were relatively moderate, the season was one of transition and marked by a climate subject to swift change, even week to week at times. So, it was in September in the north of the Germanic central uplands when a certain Roman general marched his men into a pass between Kalkriese Hill and dense, boggy swampland. Unbeknownst to the Romans, they were marching into a bloody, hellish gauntlet that, for them, was to characterize their last days on Earth. The days that followed were a harrowing bloodbath that destroyed three veteran Roman legions and rocked the Roman Empire, and its leader, to the core. You can find the Hardtack socials via linktree. Following Augustus Caesar's victory in the Battle of Actium, Rome, which had been a republic for the better part of five centuries was reorganized into an empire, one that would go on to become one of the largest in history. This, naturally, was followed by an initiative to expand its borders and territories. But when the Romans looked to the north in what's now Germany, they were met with heavy resistance. Rome at the dawn of the first century AD was an empire on the rise. As the civil wars of the late Republican period faded into the past, the new government of Augustus Caesar looked set to assert its will on an ever-growing amount of territory and peoples. Yet in 9 AD the Roman Army suffered a defeat so total that it permanently altered the fate of Roman expansion on an entire frontier. On this episode of No One is Competent we're discussing one of the most important battles in European history, the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest.
After the ApocalypseA pandemic survival storySeason two, Episode Nineteen, “Teutoburg”A cold, dry, wind swept dust and bits of trash from the parking lot. It danced in the distribution center entrance like a tiny tornado. Bert checked over his M4 and decided he should probably clean it at some point. As near as he could figure it had been a week since he'd done so. He was leaning against a squat cement pillar that, he supposed, was meant to keep vehicles from crashing into the building. There was a line of them planted in front of the glass doors. ...Email List -> https://acast.us14.list-manage.com/subscribe?u=a02fed2a783fcc887760255a9&id=e15419e7bePodcast on Acast -> https://shows.acast.com/after-the-apocalypseFacebook group -> https://www.facebook.com/groups/oldmanapocalypsePatreon to support the show -> https://www.patreon.com/AftertheApocalypseKindle Vella Story -> https://www.amazon.com/kindle-vella/story/B09LTRC8RHMerch Store -> http://tee.pub/lic/8MubRv7yeAw...Hello my survivor friends. For this second part episode of the History Machine Podcast, Cathal and Niall return to discuss the first emperor of Rome: Octavian "Augustus" Caesar. After the defeat of Mark Anthony and Cleopatra, the ambitious Augustus will solidify his position and establish a dynasty. With Caesar, Agrippa, Tiberius, the catastrophe in the Teutoburg forest and more with help from the neural network AI: History Machine. Rankings, numbers, hype and more. Tune in to part two on the man who became the first Emperor of Rome.
After the conquest and incorporation of Gaul into the Roman Empire at the hands of Julius Caesar, a natural border- the Rhine river, had separated two distinct lands. To the west, all of Gaul and Rome's holdings. To the east- unconquered and unfamiliar lands, rife with barbarians and their uncivilized practices. The Romans, eager to expand fall into one of the worst traps they will ever encounter.
The Roman Legions were the height of military professionalism of their day. How, then, was a young Roman officer able to cobble together a loose federation of lightly armed Germanic tribesmen and hand Rome one of her most disastrous defeats? All of this right under the nose of his commanding officer? Love, betrayal, fate…The Battle of Teutoburg Forest has it all, and that is why it is a battle you might not know, but should. http://battlerattlepodcast.com/

Its been used for nationalist propaganda across the ages and its just been dramatised for Netflix, but what do we actually know about the Battle of Teutoburg Forest? For a start, where was it? Dr Joanne Ball, from the University of Liverpool is a battlefield archaeologist. In this episode she takes Tristan through this story of the betrayal and destruction of three of Emperor Augustus’ Roman legions - under the leadership of Varus - by a Germanic alliance led by Arminius, a Germanic auxiliary officer brought up as a hostage of the Roman Empire. Together they explore the circumstances which led the Roman leaders to trust a Germanic subject against his fellow Germanic nationals. They also go through the evidence which places the ambush at Kalkriese and the battle’s extensive legacy, some of which stems from conflicting accounts of its location.Presented by Tristan Hughes (@ancientstristan)Featuring Jo Ball (@DrJEBall)Edited by Sophie Gee (@SophieGee12) See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
'Torn between the mighty empire that raised him and his own tribal people, a Roman officer's conflicted allegiances lead to an epic historical clash' The Ancient Warfare magazine team are joined by Joanne Ball from Liverpool University to discuss the new Netflix hit series Barbarians. The action takes place in Magna Germania in 9 AD, with events culminating in the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest.
Brian Johnston continually reminds us that the battle for the right to life is actually rooted in the battle of ideas. And in this battle of ideas they must be expressed through language, ideas must be embodied by words. Because of that, there is an ongoing battle over words and their meanings. It is a battle reaching a crescendo, an ongoing battle in which our entire culture is now immersed. Disinformation is the intentional relaying, retelling and re-emphasis of false information: false facts, false ‘truths’ and principles. We are currently witnessing a concerted attempt at a culture-wide disinformation campaign aimed at abandoning the foundational principles of our laws, culture, and society. Brian examines, in-depth, the recent appointment of Justice Amy Coney Barrett to the United States Supreme Court. He examines the actual facts surrounding US Supreme Court appointments and the deliberate disinformation that has not only been inserted into the public debate, but is being re-emphasized and reenforced as somehow true. Those who have been given the fiduciary trust to inform the public, not only news outlets and social media providers (who declare they offer a public service to the community of mutual communications (perhaps akin to the telephone system), but now these same public utilities of communications closely monitor and control what is said on this public communication system, social media. Most evident is the disinformation and redefinition of terms regarding language and knowledge which is so common now in the academic community. The academic community and other factual information gathering agencies that have historically been focused on objective facts, were politically disinterested and moored in avoiding specific ideological battles. Alarmingly, even the most historically pristine outlet of communication, the dictionary, and other educational tools, are currently involved in this contorted effort to silence dissenting thought. We are seeing outright disinformation and intentional manipulation of the words and subsequent thoughts in which the public engages. Nowhere is that clearer than the recent alacrity with which the English language itself was intentionally assaulted with great vigor and animus. During the Amy Coney Barrett Senate Judiciary hearings, Senator Mazie Hirono of Hawaii declared that Mrs. Barrett was a bigot and an unworthy justice due to her use of the term, “sexual preference” in describing homosexuals. She asserted this as a disqualifying matter of her nomination. Mrs. Barrett responded that she was sorry as she was completely unaware that the use of this term was somehow judgmental or bigoted. Yet Mrs. Barrett reflected the cultural norm, such that even pro-homosexual and gay publications had used the term earlier in the month. It was not used as a prejudicial or slanderous term, but a self-described term. The very night of Senator Hirono’s accusation, the online version of the Miriam-Webster dictionary changed the meaning of the term “sexual preference,” and delineated that it was a bigoted and prejudice slander of LBGTQ individuals. The dictionary was changed seemingly in concert with Sen. Hirono’s political attack! The English language reflected in the Miriam-Webster dictionary itself was intentionally altered and declared outdated and bigoted - with the click of a mouse. A widely respected and heretofore accurate, politically disinterested compiler of English usage was intentionally and immediately used for the creation of political newspeak. George Orwell‘s description of a dystopic cultures language patterns was employed before the eyes of the world. Disinformation - intentional confusion, emotional punishment, slander and cultural banishment have become extremely common tools of the pro-death, anti-life culture which seeks to destroy our foundational ways of even thinking and reasoning. Brian reminds us that the war of ideas is very real and one of the principle tools is to create linguistic confusion, to twist the meaning of words and force cultural assent to these newly twisted terms. Etymologically speaking, the word “war” is an English word derived from Indo-European languages and specifically German Gothic. The word “war” in Gothic-German literally means “confusion.” It is vitally important that advocates for life and objective truth understand this tool of language and confusion in this war of ideas. The Goths themselves were the only nation to have defeated the Roman empire in battle. They used confusion. That is their meaning of “war.” The Roman empire and its impact on civilization is built on order and principles. This was reflected in the Roman legionaries method of war - working as a cohesive unit marching in phalanxes, locking shields and repelling all comers. This could not be used in the forest of Germany and specifically at the battle of the Teutoburg forest in 9AD. Three legions of Roman soldiers were completely destroyed as the Goth warriors used the confusion of forest warfare and “concerted disorder” to overwhelm those in the habit of thinking and operating logically and in an orderly fashion. This loss of so many Roman legions was the starting point of Rome’s decline as an imperial power although the implications were to be felt over centuries. Confusion and disordered thinking, lack of clarity in the use of words and language, and charged emotional exchanges are the methods regularly used by those who seek to overcome objective facts and self-evident truths. In the right to live is the first and foundational premise of the self-evident truths. It must be fought for and defended in this battle of ideas.

Melvyn Bragg and guests discuss the great Roman military disaster of 9 AD when Germanic tribes under Arminius ambushed and destroyed three legions under Varus. According to Suetonius, emperor Augustus hit his head against the wall when he heard the news, calling on Varus to give him back his legions. The defeat ended Roman expansion east of the Rhine. Victory changed the development of the Germanic peoples, both in the centuries that followed and in the nineteenth century when Arminius, by then known as Herman, became a rallying point for German nationalism. With Peter Heather Professor of Medieval History at King’s College London Ellen O'Gorman Senior Lecturer in Classics at the University of Bristol And Matthew Nicholls Fellow and Senior Tutor at St John’s College, Oxford Producer: Simon Tillotson
