On October 13, 1972, a chartered aircraft carrying forty-five passengers, including 19 members of the Old Christians' Club rugby team, departed from Montevideo, Uruguay bound for Santiago, Chile. About an hour into the flight, the copilot incorrectly believed the plane had gotten off course and requested permission from air traffic control in Santiago to begin his descent and course correct. However, when the plane began descending out of the cloud cover, the copilot realized he'd been wrong about their position and were in fact dangerous close to the Andes mountains. The pilots attempted to pull the plane back up, but they were unsuccessful and the crashed directly into the mountain.Ultimately, sixteen of the forty-five passengers survived the crash of flight 571, spending seventy-two days in an isolated, untraveled part of the Andes. They endured extremely harsh conditions including sub-zero temperatures, exposure to freezing wind, and most significantly, starvation. The survivors were eventually rescued after two passengers hiked three days out of the mountains, using only materials from the wreckage to aid in the trek, where they eventually found help. In the years since the crash, the story of Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571 has become one of the most famous tales of survival and human endurance.Thank you to the Incredible Dave White of Bring Me the Axe Podcast for research and Writing support!ReferencesAssociated Press. 1972. When a plane carrying a team of young rugby players crashed into the Andes mountains in 1972, search teams soon gave up hope. But two months later, 16 passengers of Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571 emerged alive. The events became known as ‘The Miracle of the Andes' and have previously been told in documentaries and films including Society of the Snow. One horrifying detail continues to fascinate audiences - the starving men were only able to stay alive by eating the bodies of those who died. In 2009, Nando Parrado told Louise Hidalgo about their extraordinary story of survival.Eye-witness accounts brought to life by archive. Witness History is for those fascinated by the past. We will be drawing on the 1974 book "Alive" by Piers Paul Read, which was written on behalf of the survivors and documents their remarkable journey. What we love about this story is that it is not just a story about survival, but also about stepping up and banding together in the face of adversity. Laila Khan and Barney Boom from Sonic Boom Six join Flixwatcher to review Laila's choice Society of the Snow.   Society of the Snow (2023) is based on the non-fiction book La Sociedad de la Nieve by Pablo Vierci and directed by J. A. (The Impossible) Bayona. It tells the incredible true story of the Uruguayan rugby team, who were travelling to Chile when their plane crashed in the Andes in 1972. The film was nominated for Best International Film at the 2024 Oscars. On October 13, 1972, the Uruguayan rugby team and their family and friends board Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571. Their destination is Santiago, Chile, but due to pilot error the plane descends too early and the plane stuck a mountain ridge. The impact splits the plane into two - the front fuselage sliding down a glacier. Of the 45 passengers on board, 29 survive the initial crash. The survivors are faced with unbelievable conditions as they struggle to stay alive. This is not the first time the incredible true story has been portrayed on film. The 1993 film Alive was criticised for its portrayal by American actors. Society of Snow reclaims its own history by casting Uruguayan and Argentine actors and filming at the actual location. Recommendability scores for Society of the Snow were very high, the crash scene in particular is heart-rending, due to its traumatic story repeat viewing scores were lower to give an overall rating of 3.51. pWotD Episode 2440: Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571 Welcome to popular Wiki of the Day where we read the summary of a popular Wikipedia page every day. With 291,622 views on Saturday, 6 January 2024 our article of the day is Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571.Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571 was the chartered flight of a Fairchild FH-227D from Montevideo, Uruguay, to Santiago, Chile, that crashed in the Andes mountains on October 13, 1972. The accident and subsequent survival became known as the Andes flight disaster (Tragedia de los Andes) and the Miracle of the Andes (Milagro de los Andes). The inexperienced co-pilot, Lieutenant-Colonel Dante Héctor Lagurara, was piloting the aircraft at the time of the accident. He mistakenly believed the aircraft had overflown Curicó, the turning point to fly north and begin descending towards what he thought was Pudahuel Airport in Santiago de Chile. He failed to notice that instrument readings indicated he was still 37–43 mi (60–69 km) east of Curicó. Lagurara, upon regaining visual flight conditions, saw the mountain and unsuccessfully tried to gain altitude. The aircraft struck a mountain ridge, shearing off both wings and the tail cone. The remaining portion of the fuselage slid down a glacier at an estimated 220 mph (350 km/h), descending 2,379 feet (725 m) before ramming into an ice and snow mound. The flight was carrying 45 passengers and crew, including 19 members of the Old Christians Club rugby union team, along with their families, supporters and friends. Three crew members and nine passengers died immediately and several more died soon after due to the frigid temperatures and the severity of their injuries. The crash site is located at an elevation of 11,710 feet (3,570 m) in the remote Andes mountains of western Argentina, just east of the border with Chile. Search and rescue aircraft overflew the crash site several times during the following days, but failed to see the white fuselage against the snow. Search efforts were called-off after eight days of searching. During 72 days following the crash, the survivors suffered from extreme hardships, including exposure, starvation and several avalanches, which led to the deaths of 13 more passengers. The remaining passengers resorted to cannibalism to survive. As the weather improved with the arrival of late spring, two survivors, Nando Parrado and Roberto Canessa, climbed the 15,260-foot (4,650 m) mountain peak on the western rim of the glacier cirque without any mountaineering gear. They hiked for 10 days into Chile, traveling 38 miles (61 km), before finding help. On 23 December 1972, two and a half months after the crash, the 16 remaining survivors were rescued. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 01:36 UTC on Sunday, 7 January 2024.For the full current version of the article, see Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571 on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm Raveena Standard.

Uruguaylaista rugbyjoukkuetta kuljettanut lentokone putosi lentäjän arviointivirheen seurauksena keskelle Andien vuoristoa perjantaina 13. lokakuuta 1972. Onnettomuudesta selvinneet joutuivat välittömästi aloittamaan uudenlaisen kamppailun hengestään, sillä he olivat nyt keskellä lumista erämaata vailla minkäänlaisia kylmään säähän sopivia varusteita, kunnollista suojaa, ja ennen kaikkea ilman riittävää määrää juomaa ja ruokaa. Koska selviytyjiä ei onnistuttu löytämään, he päätyivät pelastamaan itse itsensä 72:n Andeilla vietetyn päivän jälkeen. Old Christians -rugbyjoukkueen ja Andien selviytyjien tarina on taas yksi osoitus siitä, millaisiin uskomattomiin suorituksiin ihmiset kykenevät sinnikkyyden, päättäväisyyden ja elämänhalun voimalla.   Tunnusmusiikki: Nick Castro – Sun Song Lähteet: Read, Piers Paul 2017: Alive – The Story of the Andes Survivors (äänikirja) Stranded: I've Come from a Plane That Crashed on the Mountains (dokumentti) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uruguayan_Air_Force_Flight_571 https://www.independent.co.uk/news/obituaries/javier-methol-businessman-who-survived-for-72-days-in-the-andes-after-his-plane-crashed-in-1972-10318866.html https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mount_Seler

In this episode of The Compendium: an assembly of fascinating and intriguing things, we will be diving into the gripping and inspirational story of "The Miracle of the Andes", the crash of Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571 and the unimaginable circumstances that the survivors faced. We will be drawing on the 1974 book "Alive" by Piers Paul Read, which was written on behalf of the survivors and documents their remarkable journey. What we love about this story is that it is not just a story about survival, but also about stepping up and banding together in the face of adversity. Together Kyle and Adam explore what happens when a plane crashes on a glacier and what it truly takes to survive when everyone has given up on you. We believe that this story is a testament to the extraordinary things that people are capable of and how even in the most desperate situations, humanity can shine through. So join us for this riveting episode of the Compendium, as we take a deep dive into one of the most harrowing and inspiring stories of survival in history. Also recently Netflix released an incredible movie on this very story titled Society of the Snow. Cannibalism. We're talking about that  flight that ended in cannibalism: Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571. But how did this happen? What brought a group of young rugby players, their families, and their friends to resort to survival cannibalism in the remote, desolate Andes? No one thinks they'll ever be in a plane crash, but for these crash victims, they quickly found themselves in a living nightmare that lasted for 72 days. With no water, no food, and no equipment, these 33 survivors lived through a series of events that even the most imaginative movie studio could never come up with. The truth, in this case, is truly stranger than fiction. Tune in this week as Caroline and Alex begin a multi-part series on the miraculous, gruesome, and morbidly inspiring story of the Andes Flight Disaster.

Woo, boy! It's a long one! BUT - it is totally worth it. Listen as we struggle our way through a couple of cases involving cannibalism. One true crime, one survival... both intriguing. Pam: Issei Sagawa is a Japanese cannibal killer who only served 2 years in a French prison before walking free. You won't believe his disgusting crime, his poor attempt at covering it up, and his life as a free man after committing necrophilia, murder, and cannibalism. This is one you definitely don't want to miss!  Ronda:  When the Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571 went down over the Andes, the surviving passengers were stranded on the side of a mountain in below freezing temperatures with no food or water. After nearly starving, they made a pact to give their bodies as nourishment to the living members of the group should one of them die. This unthinkable act along with several feats of ingenuity and an incredible show of strength are how this rag-tag group of rugby players managed to survive 72 days in uninhabitable conditions.  Sources:Pam:VoxWikipediaAll That's InterestingYouTube - Coffeehouse CrimeRonda:Wikipedia 9newsNational Geographic Nomadic BoysAmerican Academy of Ophthalmology Music: Big Foot by Gvidon on Pixabay (Go check it out!)

In 1972, the 45 passengers and crew of Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571 faced extreme weather, avalanches, a variety of injuries, sickness, sun blindness, thirst, and starvation so severe, they were forced to eat the bodies of their friends and family who lay in the snow next to them for over two months in this harrowing tale of survival. Their story is so unbelievable, the first police officers that two members of this group finally contacted took hours of convincing to believe it. No one should have survived a plane crashing at an altitude of over 11,000 feet in the Andes, even in the Spring. The plane crashed far up above the tree line in a snow covered landscape, with no plants or animals for anyone to eat. The plane - because the intended flight was only two hours long - had almost no food on board. It was cannibalism or die. Even with cannibalism, the sixteen men who would make it alive still should have died. Find out why their story is often referred to as the Miracle of the Andes, today on Timesuck. Bad Magic Productions Monthly Patreon Donation:  The Bad Magic Charity for June is The Rainbow Railroad. It's hard to even put into words the range of emotions that came over me watching this story and delving into this incredible true story. While based on a true story of the Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571 about a soccer team that crashed in the Andes mountains in 1972, the film was equally as compelling. I couldn't even slightly imagine what this must have been like to go through. This was Charles' pick as a film so I get into his history with the film and we talk some differences between the true story and the film, some behind the scenes info, and pose other survival situations.Off-topic rants include: The Donner party, Into Thin Air, climbers, and Josh Lucas ---Get BONUS episodes on 90s TV (Freaks & Geeks, My So Called Life, Felicity, Dawson's Creek, and more...) and to support the show, join the PATREON! www.patreon.com/fashiongrungeGIVE US A 5 STAR RATING & SUBSCRIBE!Hosts: Lauren @lauren_melanie & Charles @charleshaslam Music by Den-Mate @imdenmateFollow Fashion Grunge Podcast Instagram @fashiongrungepodTwitter @fgrungepodLetterboxd Fashion Grunge PodcastTikTok @fashiongrungepod

Director Frank Marshall (ARACHNAPHOBIA) brings us the true story of Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571. The Fairchild FH-227D was carrying a rugby team and various related friends and family when it crashed into the Andes mountains in October 1972. A compelling true survival story with impressive location photography and awe inspiring scenery, time has been cruel on this as it all too often has the feel of a soap opera despite the decent acting talent involved which includes Ethan Hawke, Josh Hamilton and Illeana Douglas. It's also comforting to know that despite my fear of plane crashes, being suddenly thrust into a survival situation I'm hopelessly ill-equipped for and the notion of freezing or staving to death, all I'd need to do to survive an air disaster is smoke a lot of cigarettes and eat my friends ass. Sounds good.

On this episode of the Sofa King Podcast, we take a look at an infamous case of Cannibalism, the crash of Uruguayan Flight 751. In October of 1972, a plane crashed carrying 40 passengers and 5 crew. As the plane bounced off the side of the mountain, it lost its wing, then it’s tail, then it’s other wing. All the while, people fill out and littered the snowy mountain side. Much like the Donner Party, after several weeks, they were out of food and lost on a glacier. Over two horrible months, they resorted to cannibalism and had no hope of rescue. The scene: October 13th, 1972. An amateur rugby club from Uruguay headed to Santiago, Chile to play a match. They rented an air force plane to take them there, and they had extra seats, so friends and family could come along. The co-pilot was put in charge of the flight, and he got lost in the fog and reported the wrong position. He crashed. While he was trying to pull up and avoid the mountain that suddenly emerged from the fog, it was too late. Uruguayan Flight 751 tore itself apart as it struck the summit of the mountain, until finally the fuselage slid down the mountain for over 2000 feet. They stacked the dead outside of the fuselage, and they sorted out the food. There was hardly any because it wasn’t a typical passenger plane, and the galley had broken off when the tail fell away. On day eleven, the search was called off. It was just them on a mountain with no vegetation or animal life. They were all starving, and people were dying every few days. There was a blizzard. An avalanche killed more of them. They finally made the horrible decision to eat human flesh even though most thought it was a sin. Eventually, Roberto Canessa and Antonio Vizintin decided to make the trek across the deadly mountain. They were hit by another blizzard and thought they weren’t going to make it. Eventually, after days of climbing and hiking with no snow gear or food, they found civilization. How many survived? How many refused to eat flesh and died of starvation? What is a muleskinner, and how did it help them get rescued? How long can one chocolate covered peanut last a man? Why didn’t they just radio for help? What did they discover the best way was to eat human flesh? Listen, laugh, learn. #Humancannibalism is the act or practice of humans eating the flesh or internal organs of other human beings. A person who practices cannibalism is called a cannibal. The expression cannibalism has been extended into zoology to mean one individual of a species consuming all or part of another individual of the same species as food, including sexual cannibalism. The Island Carib people of the Lesser Antilles, from whom the word "cannibalism" is derived, acquired a long-standing reputation as cannibals after their legends were recorded in the 17th century.[1] Some controversy exists over the accuracy of these legends and the prevalence of actual cannibalism in the culture. #Cannibalism was practiced in New Guinea and in parts of the Solomon Islands, and flesh markets existed in some parts of Melanesia.[2] Fiji was once known as the "Cannibal Isles".[3] Cannibalism has been well documented around the world, from Fiji to the Amazon Basin to the Congo to the Māori people of New Zealand.[4] Neanderthals are believed to have practiced cannibalism,[5][6] and Neanderthals may have been eaten by anatomically modern humans.[7] Cannibalism was also practiced in the past in Egypt during ancient Egypt, Roman Egypt and during famines such as the great famine in the year 1201.[8][9] Cannibalism has recently been both practiced and fiercely condemned in several wars, especially in Liberia[10] and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.[11] It was still practiced in Papua New Guinea as of 2012, for cultural reasons[12][13] and in ritual and in war in various Melanesian tribes. Cannibalism has been said to test the bounds of cultural relativism because it challenges anthropologists "to define what is or is not beyond the pale of acceptable human behavior".[1] Some scholars even argue that no firm evidence exists that cannibalism has ever been a socially acceptable practice anywhere in the world, at any time in history, although this has been consistently debated against.[14] Cannibalism has occasionally been practiced as a last resort by people suffering from famine, even in modern times. Famous examples include the ill-fated Donner Party (1846–47) and, more recently, the crash of Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571 (1972), after which some survivors ate the bodies of dead passengers. Additionally, there are cases of people suffering from mental illness engaging in cannibalism for sexual pleasure, such as Jeffrey Dahmer and Albert Fish. There is resistance to formally labeling cannibalism a mental disorder.[15] weki --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/vegansteven/message

You Have to Rescue Yourself  In life, no one is coming to save you, there are no helicopters on the way, you have to rescue yourself. In business, there is no one coming with that promotion you aren’t willing to work and ask for, in relationships, there are no beautiful women waiting in line to marry you while you play video games and live a mundane life, there is no magic pill to make you the best version of yourself, you have to choose to be the best, and fight for it every day. You have to rescue yourself. 2. Know there is Hope No matter how bleak things look right now, know that there is hope, there is always something better waiting for you if you are willing to have patience and put in the work. No matter how hard it is, no matter how much you want to give up, stay strong and have hope. 3. Take it One Step at a Time If you want to succeed at anything, just take it one step at a time. Don’t think about the massive journey ahead of you, just think about the natural next step, think about the one thing that you need to do today. If you can have laser focus on the next thing you need to accomplish your success in life and business will skyrocket. 4. Don’t Wait for the Plane to Crash  Life is beautiful and we have so much to be grateful for. Don’t wait for your plane to crash to realize that. Spend time every day in thanks, thinking about the people, things, and experiences you love. Just be grateful and allow the world to spin in its own way without worrying about it.

"Rugby players eat their dead." Spotting this bumper sticker encouraged director Frank Marshall to take on the film version of "Alive," the book by Piers Paul Read about the crash of Flight 571. After the plane went down in the Andes on Friday the 13th of October, 1972, the members and supporters of the Old Christians rugby club who survived faced an impossible choice: whether or not to eat the only food available, the bodies of their dead friends.
