The PIVOTAL trial is the world’s first PIC specific Platform trial. It comes hot on the heels of some brilliant UK PIC research, like OxyPICU (PicPod77), and GASTRIC (not published yet, but will definitely have a PicPod soon!). It’s a platform which aims to reduce the life cycle of PIC research from about 10 years from idea to publication, down towards one half, or one third. All UK PICUs have signed up to this. We discuss the ethics, methodology, and statistics (spoiler alert: PicPod65 will help). We go through the aims, and hoped for end points. We discuss each of the three starting arms, (restrictive vs standard fluids, midazolam vs dexmedetomidine or clonidine, and various transfusion thresholds). It’s a study of ambition and huge scope, with an aim of recruiting as many PIC admissions as possible. For UK listeners it’s a must: for those in other countries it’s an example of how PICUs can work together to build a platform like this. Enjoy!

Most recently, named a Top 101 Companies to Work For® in the nation. The second-generation family business, based in Grand Rapids, Michigan, is America's leading producer of culinary butter and margarine and creates custom butter flavors for some of America's biggest brands. Peters began as a factory worker in his father's company at the age of 12: an experience that taught him first-hand about the challenges that frontline workers face. At 30, he took over the company determined to lead a financially successful business that would also enrich the lives of its workers. This West Michigan-based model has been replicated in nearly 12 states; and Peters is currently expanding its mission to help frontline workers not only maintain their jobs but progress into better positions within or across partner companies. His second book, The Retention Trap, was published June 3 of 2025 and highlights the need to rethink talent and focus on investment rather than retention. Mark shares insights from his book, The Retention Trap, emphasizing the importance of investing in human capital and creating a supportive work environment. Mark's approach challenges traditional notions of employee retention. We're kicking off the first of five podcast episodes from Paul's 10-day trip to Australia. First up, we have John Storms of Transit Systems Victoria and Mark Peters of Transit Systems Australia giving us an overview of transit in Australia and their plans for the future. Much like North America, Australia has cities surrounded by sprawling, low-density suburbs that are challenging for any public transit system to serve. In their separate interviews with Paul, John and Mark talk frankly about these challenges and what needs to be done to address them.Coming up next week we have the first of two holiday specials on Transit Unplugged. First, we're turning the tables on Paul with our own award-winning radio journalist, Julie Gates, interviewing him for a change. Paul talks about the highlights from 2024 and what's ahead for 2025. Because Christmas falls on a Wednesday this year, we're releasing the episode a day early on Tuesday (Christmas Eve). We'll do the same the following week, with an episode coming out on New Year's Eve instead of New Year's Day.00:00 Introduction and Overview of the Australian Trip00:20 Exploring Melbourne and Hobart00:38 Brisbane and Upcoming Podcasts02:50 Interview with John Storms02:58 Focus on People and Accessibility Initiatives06:58 Hydrogen and Electric Bus Innovations08:11 John Storms' Background and Melbourne's Growth11:05 Interview with Mark Peters: Transit Trends and Zero Emissions11:16 Interview with Mark Peters19:01 Technology and Innovation in Transit20:39 Coming up next week on Transit UnpluggedTransit Unplugged is brought to you by Modaxo https://www.modaxo.comHost: Paul ComfortProducer: Paul ComfortEditor and Writer: Tris HusseyExecutive Producer: Julie GatesSpecial thanks to:Brand design: Tina OlagundoyeSocial Media: Tatyana MechkarovaMarketing content, Transit Unplugged Newsletter, & transit puns: Tris HusseyIf you have a question or comment, email us at info@transitunplugged.com.Follow us on social media: LinkedIn - Twitter - Threads- Instagram - FacebookSign up for the Transit Unplugged NewsletterDisclaimer: The views and opinions expressed in this program are those of the guests, and do not necessarily reflect the views or positions of Modaxo Inc., its affiliates or subsidiaries, or any entities they represent (“Modaxo”). Sometimes the difference between winning and losing is your bench. The people you can call on to step up and win the game, finish the project, or get it done when your usual players can't. That's a strong bench. People you know who can step into the shoes of current leaders and be the next ones.By 2030 all baby boomers will be 65 or older and preparing to retire. So who is going to replace them? According to this week's guest, Matt Booterbaugh, CEO of RATP Dev USA, we don't have a strong bench to step in when current leaders step down, and Matt has some ideas how to fix it.Paul and Matt also talk about the general state of transit, funding challenges, progress towards zero emission buses, and Matt's thoughts on coming from outside transit.Next week on the show, we have the first in a series of interviews from Paul's 10-day tour of Australia. First up, we have John Storms, Managing Director at Transit Systems in the State of Victoria, and Mark Peters, Executive General Manager, E Mobility and Fleet Innovation at Transit Systems for all of Australia. They'll be talking about transit in Australia overall, their strides in expanding their workforce, accessibility, and the transition to zero emissions buses.Don't forget, our year end wrap up shows are coming up! First, on Christmas Eve, we have Paul and Transit Unplugged News Minute's Julie Gates, with a look back and a look ahead in transit. Last week, the Christchurch City Council voted to sanction Israel. This follows calls from the Palestine Solidarity Network Aotearoa to stop purchasing merchandise from companies that have links to funding Israel's war on Gaza, according to the United Nations Human Rights Council. The staff report on Wednesday shows that council did not have any business with companies identified on this list, with recommendations passed by council members that amended the policy to prevent future business with these companies. Despite passing, councillors Aaron Keown, and Kelly Baber voted against, with councillors James Gough, Victoria Henstock, and Mark Peters abstaining. News and Editorial Director, Joel, spoke to the National Chair of the Palestinian Solidarity Network, John Minto, about the sanctions, and why these sanctions are so important.

**Please note special time for this call. Lucy Grace never intended to embark upon a formal spiritual path. Yet again and again, she felt called deeper into it. Raised by a young, single mother in an impoverished neighborhood in New Zealand, Lucy experienced significant trauma throughout childhood. Her neighborhood was riddled with gang violence and burglaries. Her mother worked at a secondhand shop, and meager earnings meant they sometimes went without food, heat, furniture, or schoolbooks - much less trips or vacations. They did not have the means for a car until Lucy turned fourteen. Despite the violence and trauma Lucy experienced and witnessed, she often felt joyful as a child. She also had a keen sense that though she didn't fit, she was in the wrong place. As an only child without much exposure to the world beyond her immediate surroundings, Lucy discovered the gift of spaciousness within herself. She describes her relative isolation as a kind of "welfare-child ashram". In her poem, "Kairos Time," she wrote, "I lived my whole life / on a whim and a dime / - on God's time / found solace and / wonderment / in the light that lives / inside the darkest quiet." Since childhood, Lucy has lived many lives, including graduating from college and working as a television journalist for New Zealand's largest national news channel, Channel One News. For 15 years, she worked as a humanitarian aid worker based in Europe for UNICEF, Save the Children, Fairtrade, and Oxfam. She has worked in orphanages and disaster zones around the world, helping to bring relief to people who are suffering. Returning to New Zealand in her early thirties, Lucy navigated a sudden debilitating illness with no recognizable cause. When she was thirty-six, she became a mother and experienced a sense of total separation in which she felt severed from the inner guidance that had accompanied her since she was a child. Many of the things she loved - including her career, marriage, and home - also came to an end during this time. But with a gentle cheerfulness, Lucy sees that her whole life has been about attuning to nature's messages - and learning to move with them. "There are things that want to happen and we can feel that pull," she has said. "And the plans of life are always so much more amazing and incredible than little Lucy's brain can think up." Today, Lucy is a spiritual guide who humbly observes that we are, each of us, teachers. She is also a mystic, holistic therapist, and the author of This Untameable Light, a book of poems that, in Adyashanti’s words, “shine with the light of deeply embodied spirit. A dance of light upon the land.” She is based in New Zealand and offers occasional retreats in other parts of the world, helping "unlock and integrate" the unique truths and wisdom in each of us. Join us on April 27 for a call with this mystic poet and deeply relatable spiritual guide, who regards her mother and daughter as her greatest gurus. My Mothers’ love ...I love you—in all your ways and always will! She taught me God will too, you will too, life will too, no matter what I am, aren't, do or don't do.And what else is there? Somewhere in my marrow is the sense that all of life is benevolentand it loves me like she did, without exception, without expectation-conditionlessShe gave me unearned-love's freedom, no life-lines to toe, no scripts to follow. So who needs dollars and cents? That's her gift, that'sinheritance... Thank you ...We are all haunted, grace-filled beings-I was just trying to live with the hauntings, wasn't seeking, anything. But you brought me to my knees, you broke me bodily (the heart was just the half of it.) You opened me,white flagged the wars in me.My three-foot guru, in gumboot feet... The call will be moderated by our volunteers Mark Peters, and Mili Nair, a young teenager "exploring life through the wonders of sentences and words, periods and exclamation marks"!
Successful Return for Dublin's StartUp Weekend for Women "Why do we organize a Startup Weekend event focused on Women?" asks Leyla Karaha. "It's important to create a safe space for aspiring women tech entrepreneurs to kickstart their businesses." First event in 2021 In 2021, Leyla organised the first event, which was open to all, but the turnout was telling. Out of 15 pitches, only one was from a woman. Similarly, among the nine teams formed, only one had a mixed-gender composition. Recognizing the need for change, in 2022, she pivoted to focus on organising women-centric events, and the results have been nothing short of remarkable. Techstars Startup Weekends Techstars Startup Weekends, lasting 54 hours, offer unparalleled experiential education for both technical and non-technical entrepreneurs. From Friday night pitches to Sunday night demos, participants engage in brainstorming, business plan development, and prototype creation, all aimed at fostering action, innovation, and education. The overarching theme of the recent event has been the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and Social Innovation. The Winners In first place was Moop, a venture dedicated to fixing poor reporting with smart data analytics for regulated industries, while contributing to societal good. Second place went to Flit.ie, focusing on financial literacy for women, and third place to Glot AI, an AI-powered language tutor facilitating language learning anytime, anywhere. Panel of Judges The panel of judges for this recent event included Áine Mulloy, Business Development Manager at Startup Loft Accelerator, Amazon Web Services (AWS); Adebola Olomo, CEO of Deefrent Media Agency; Mark Peters, Co-Founder and Managing Partner at WakeUp Capital; Dr Toluwani Akaehomen, Director and Principal Leadership, Learning, and People Development Consultant at Vantage Dymensions; and, Billy Linehan, StartUp Ballymun and Consultant at Celtar Advisers. Power of Women Entrepreneurs We believe in the power of women entrepreneurs to effect positive change in the world, hence our dedication to encouraging their participation and fostering ideas that drive real-world social change. By hosting events like these, we aim to incentivize more women to venture into the tech startup space, diversifying and enriching it. Venue at Accenture Song Held in the open-plan offices of Accenture Song in Smithfield, Dublin, the event garnered substantial support, facilitating the growth of over 80 aspiring entrepreneurs, many of whom are poised to build successful companies. With 30 mentors, 5 judges, 7 workshop facilitators, and 7 speakers, participants received invaluable guidance and inspiration. A total of 33 participants pitched their ideas, with 18 teams working passionately on their business concepts. Impact The impact of the event, held from the 22nd to the 24th of March, extended far beyond its physical boundaries, reaching over 200K organic social media views. Attendees from across the World joined in, with 28 women and 5 men pitching their ideas. Ultimately, 18 teams were formed, with 16 teams presenting their projects on Sunday evening. Last words Quoting Adebola Olomo, "This wasn't just a competition; it was a powerhouse of progress and a showcase of the unstoppable entrepreneurial spirit." Everyday across the globe, people bring their whole selves to work. They bring every experience from the moment they are born to the moment before they walk in the door each day. All of it. The good, the bad, the traumatic. The stuff they bring can be called the Social Determinants of Health. The determinants are big buckets of factors – environment, genetics, individual behaviors, social circumstances and medical care – that influence an individual's ability to be healthy and THRIVE. Recognizing these factors influence one's ability to focus and engage at work or even just show up at work opens up a door of possibility for employers. Employers who provide “benefits” to employees as part of a compensation package are uniquely positioned to provide resources and support that can help to address the factors that can be barriers to an individual who is trying to remain employed. My guest for this episode is Mark Peters, CEO of Butterball Farms, Inc. Mark recognized a long time ago, he could choose to learn about his employees' issues or ignore them and not play that role. He learned quickly – everyone benefited when he and the organization decided to come alongside their employees to help struggling employees find resources they needed to help them keep their jobs and care for their families. In 2003, he organized a pioneering group of CEOs and community leaders to found The Source, a not-for-profit organization that has helped hundreds of workers navigate personal challenges that interfere with their jobs. Listen in as Mark shares many of the lessons he learned along the way, actions organizations can take today to better understand the challenges their employees face and steps leaders can take to provide support that leads to reduced turnover and increased employee happiness. This episode of "Notes on Bach" is sponsored by the American Bach Society. This month we hear from Dr. Mark Peters and Dr. Reginald Sanders about the complex subject of meaning in Bach's vocal music, which can emerge from compositional choices, listener reception, and an intersection of these and other factors. Dr. Peters and Dr. Sanders edited an essay collection on this subject, Compositional Choices and Meaning in the Vocal Music of J.S. Bach, published by Lexington Books.
The past two years have seen unprecedented levels of innovation and transformation among organizations worldwide. Many organizations are operating in a significantly different manner than they did just a few years ago — focused on resilience, data access and governance, predictive analytics, enabling technologies, and more.
