In our last episode, we discussed the value of diverse perspectives. We wrap up our William A. Adams interview with ideas for solving diversity issues. We have seen where he has made great strides in raising awareness. However, we do not wrap up our conversation without offering solutions to this problem. It makes no sense to complain about a problem without suggesting solutions. A Blueprint For Solving Diversity Issues I enjoy the idea of "tech bros" that William brings up. This is a concept we see in all sorts of groups and cliques. Gatekeepers in the group need to be won over before we can become a part of it. We can focus on winning them over in those situations or create a different group. That new group allows us to build momentum and credibility to win over gatekeepers better than one person alone. Nevertheless, William broke those barriers on his own and now uses those experiences to guide the next generation to be seen for what they bring to the table instead of what has been defined as valuable to employers. He gets it all to a simple point. Diversity loses its value if we try to whitewash the diversity out and force hires to conform to our experience. A Little Background William A. Adam is an award-winning D&I innovator, engineering trailblazer, and philanthropist. After rolling out critical XML code globally in many of Microsoft's core products, he was named the first Technical Advisor to the CTO, Kevin Scott. Plenty Of Accolades As co-founder of the LEAP apprenticeship program – named Microsoft's D&I Program of the Year in 2020 – William helped launch the training of more than 26 engineering cohorts worldwide. Today, 98% of LEAP participants work at Microsoft or other high-tech companies. His most recent collaboration is with the leadership of the U.S. Virgin Islands to establish and train a technical talent pool and build critical technology infrastructure. Early in his 30-year career in software engineering, he was one of the first Black entrepreneurs in Silicon Valley and was recently profiled by the Computer History Museum. Through his company, Adamation, William developed mission-critical custom enterprise apps for Steve Jobs' NeXT computers and pioneered a network instant messaging service purchased by the CIA. He's been awarded two patents. Where Is He Now? Today, in addition to his role at Microsoft, William is the philanthropic founder of The EV3NT, a collaborative, community-based hackathon designed to use technology to address critical real-world needs. He builds kitchen cabinets, knits, and tries to recapture the exhilaration of riding a motorcycle in India. His Web Site: https://www.william-a-adams.com

We continue our conversation with "The" William A. Adams with a foray into diversity. Differing perspectives that are correctly managed and embraced are a part of high-functioning teams. Diversity is a popular term to use to get good press. However, that is not useful in itself. We must look for diverse experiences and backgrounds and then utilize them to improve the team. This benefit only occurs when we work with the differences rather than force them to conform. Differing Perspectives For A Complete Picture There are countless stories of companies that built a product they thought would take the world by storm only to release it to the sound of crickets. These often come from a team that was in a form of a bubble that kept them from considering the real world outside. When we hire a diverse group and incorporate those differing perspectives, we open ourselves to a larger world of opportunities. We discuss examples in this episode, including the idea of men coming up with a menstrual tracking application. A Little Background William A. We start a new discussion in this episode. Our conversation with "The" William A. Adams begins with a background that shows he was made for a career in software. He makes the most of the hand he was dealt and has an incredible resume with experiences to match. By the way, William also happens to be a black man in a predominately white world of IT. However, more on that in later episodes. A Career In Software Was An Obvious Choice As we look at the stories and activities of his childhood, this man was born to be in IT. These are stories that might feel familiar even and relatable. Thus, his story is motivational and shows that effort and hard work can pay off. Fortunately, he now uses that success to find others that can follow in his footsteps or even go beyond his lofty heights. A Little Background William A. How can we use technology to build generational wealth?William A Adams is the Founder of WAAV Studios LLC. As the Technical Advisor to the CTO at Microsoft, he considered himself to have had a strange job. Instead of working full-time on technical initiatives, he worked mostly on people's problems. A number of years ago, he went through a personal transformation that gave him new clarity and intention. As a Black leader, he is on a mission not just to find technical talent of color but to grow them. Pursuing that purpose inside and outside of the company has led me to co-found Microsoft's LEAP apprentice program designed to help Blacks, women, and other underrepresented communities get technical jobs. (They have graduated 26 cohorts around the world now, and 98% of graduates get jobs in high tech.). He also decided that Microsoft needed to grow talent in primarily Blacks areas like Kenya, Nigeria, and the U.S. Virgin Islands and make it happen. As a philanthropist, Williams has personally donated $200,000 to the U.S. Virgin Islands to kickstart technology initiatives. He found and funded The EV3NT, which is a collaborative, community-based hackathon that will use technology to solve critical real-world problems. His believes in not striving for a seat at the table, but to own the table in order to own the wealth. He coined the term #tequity, meaning building prosperity for Blacks through an equity stake in technology. He believes an ownership stake in technology is the fastest, surest way to create generational wealth for any underserved group. William's company WAAV Studio LLC is a tech company, founded by the brilliant patent inventor in order to bring technology of the future to the present. WAAV Studio will find tech talent and provide them with seed financing in order to develop new companies and technologies. Its ultimate plan is to create and grow companies owned by minorities, people of color, and women.Enter #tequity - the goal of empowering Blacks and underrepresented groups to build wealth and agency by owning a stake in technology development. Williams believes that this is part of democratizing generational wealth for communities who have been systematically excluded from means of sustained financial empowerment. On this episode, William explains how ownership is a necessary step towards creating generational wealth for Black Americans. Listen to this episode as he discusses:- how to participate in Microsoft's apprenticeship program- how the apprenticeship program is transforming lives- how to invest in tech for long-term wealth- why licensing is better than selling- how kids can start early in tech- his philanthropy through funding tech initiatives- how companies who implement DE&I are more profitable- how business and society can collaborate and make an impact- how to pass on more than money to future generations...and so much more!Connect with William:Website: https://www.william-a-adams.comAdditional Resources:"How To Become A Software Engineer" with Bobby DorlusKindly subscribe to our podcast for notifications on future episodes.Leave a rating and a review on iTunes and Spotify:Apple: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/build-generational-wealth-using-tech-w-william-a-adams/id1614151066?i=1000621957472Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/episode/5M7pdcQCUKn9fcLQ5XZ6UUYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c502PynIqe4

We've all heard the phase, "the only constant in life is change". For people of color, and people from historically marginalized groups - we often have to adapt to the workplace in more ways than one. For us, the question becomes how do we level up our adaptability so that we are better able to thrive in our careers, rather than just cope with them? How do we remain adaptable when faced with institutional barriers in our careers? In this week's episode, guest William A. Adams pulls on his background as an award-winning D&I innovator, engineering trailblazer, and philanthropist to answer these challenging questions and more. Adams' mission is to help Blacks & people of color own a stake in technology development, and with his advice, you can be part of the movement too. Keep up with William A. “Everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of the human freedoms - to choose one's attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one's own way.”  - Viktor Frankl Unlocking our freedom from within When we think of independence, we often think of it as an external event, like Juneteenth or the Fourth of July. But freedom and independence, including personal freedom, is actually a process and practice that requires ongoing effort. Internal freedom is our ability and willingness to live into our own creative potential. It's a mindset and comes from within. To achieve internal freedom, spend time reflecting on your values, motivations and authentic desires. Double-check that the dreams you're chasing are yours and not someone else's. We unlock greater personal power when we recognize self-limiting beliefs and behaviors that inhibit our internal freedom. The benefits are great: when we gain internal freedom, we live from a creative and empowered mindset.   What Internal Freedom looks like: [07:46]“It looks like creating visions for our own life and then taking steps toward those visions. We're honest and clear about what we want, not what someone else wants of us, or what we feel obligated to do.” “Using discretion and intention for where we place our focus and attention…Know where you want to spend your time and attention and create boundaries and practices so that you find that sweet spot.” How we hold ourselves captive: [12:35] “Complying, staying small, and not rocking the boat. Staying quiet in meetings and agreeing.” [14:47]“Not recognizing and valuing our own worth, expertise, contribution, impact - a feeling of not belonging.” For example, “'Everyone at my company has specific expertise…I run customer support so don't have much to contribute.'”  One way this belief impacts someone is in feeling unable to say no in an attempt to prove one's worth. Burnout and resentment follow.
