Welcome to a special Halloween episode of Never Did It, where Brad Garoon & Jake Ziegler go back to check in on the state of horror movies in 1960. Brad assigns Jake Village of the Damned, a fast-moving, tension-filled, and surprisingly influential little movie from England. Directed by Wolf Rilla and starring the sweet sweet-voiced George Sanders, Jake and Brad extol the joys of watching a tightly paced movie with this interesting premise. Jake gives Brad Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho, a movie he's suitably embarrassed he'd never seen. They talk about its groundbreaking plotting, the movie you might not know it influenced, and Norman Bates's career. Happy Halloween! Other movies discussed in this episode: Sabotage (1936), The Birds (1963), Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974), The Twilight Zone: The Movie (1983), Children of the Corn (1984), Alien 3 (1992), The Good Son (1993), Psycho (1998), Annihilation (2018).

We've met some pretty despicable villains throughout the previous 85 episodes of 100 Horrors. Mrs Vorhees invaded a summer camp and butchered people while they were on vacation. Mikey Myers invaded people's homes and murdered them while they celebrated Halloween. Freddy Krueger took it a step further and invaded people's dreams while they tried to sleep. Perhaps then, this is why the kids in Wolf Rilla's 1960 "classic" Village of the Damned did not seem to stand up to the test of truly frightening us as modern audiences. In one scene the antagonists realise that they are frightening an old shopkeeper, so they apologise and promise not to come back anymore. It just doesn't have that edge, you know? Anyway, tune in to this week's episode to hear some (as per usual) controversial scoring.

Not to be confused with the remake, this pitch perfect 1960 “Village of the Damned” captures all the paranoia, intrigue, suspense, and mystery of the best Twilight Zone/Outer Limits episodes (and in a crisp, not-too-long-not-too-short running time). This solid entry earned a “rent” and a “stream,” but don’t let that fool you: thanks to a solid story and atmosphere, this British creeper sticks with you, and has stood as an influence on many a horror filmmaker. The first film in our final mini-season of Season 4 (we're getting old!) is the 1967 Disney animated version of Rudyard Kipling's THE JUNGLE BOOK. Our discussion ranges from animation styles to PAW PATROL, and anthropomorphism to racial stereotyping; overall, though, we spend the most time thinking about how much this film is about the familial, paternal relationships in evidence here. Next Time It's déjà vu! Next time we look at Jon Favreau's 2016 version of THE JUNGLE BOOK. Recent Media THE MANDALORIAN (2019–): Jon Favreau, Pedro Pascal, Carl Weathers DA 5 BLOODS (2020): Spike Lee, Delroy Lindo, Jonathan Majors ENOLA HOLMES (2020): Harry Bradbeer, Nancy Springer, Millie Bobby Brown Recommendations ROBIN HOOD (1973): Wolfgang Reithermann, Brian Bedford, Phil Harris ALICE IN WONDERLAND (1951): Clyde Geronomi, Kathryn Beaumont, Ed Wynn THE VILLAGE OF THE DAMNED (1960): Wolf Rilla, George Sanders, Barbara Shelley ROAD TRIP (2000): Todd Phillips, Breckin Meyer, Seann William Scott Footnotes Firstly, as this mini-season is all about adaptations of Disney animations, this article is a good place to start: ohmy.disney.com/insider/2016/01/05/10-disney-movie-moments-that-changed-animation. And this take on technology and animation is interesting, too: memeburn.com/2013/06/how-technology-has-changed-animation-a-brief-history. (Then I got into a Google Hole [which is definitely what it's called] finding out more about animation: 3d-ace.com/press-room/articles/twelve-animation-styles-you-should-know-about, www.bloopanimation.com/types-of-animation, blog.threadless.com/disneys-art-style-through-the-decades.) Episode 4 features Melanie Williams from the University of East Anglia. We discuss an underrated 1960s gem, Wolf Rilla's the World Ten Times Over (1963)which stars Sylvia Syms as a Soho nightclub hostess. The BFI describes it: "Though never criminalised, lesbianism was verboten on screen in the early 1960s. Wolf Rilla’s rich, acerbic feature quietly subverted prevailing censorship, hinting at British cinema’s first lesbian relationship. Nightclub hostesses Ginnie (June Ritchie) and Billa (Sylvia Syms) share a flat and an increasing despair at the men in their lives. Syms’ moving, melancholic performance cuts through the compromises to signal Billa’s love for the fragile Ginnie." The beautiful soundtrack of the film was composed by Edwin Astley. “Is there no limit to the power of these children?" John Wyndham’s 1957 novel “The Midwich Cuckoos” is the foundation for Wolf Rilla’s 1960 film “Village of the Damned.” It’s hard to say which title may actually be worse, but the story in both seems to work for most people. It’s a decent sci-fi story that, while dated, creates an interesting scenario with all the women in a village being impregnated at the same time by some alien force. Even with that interesting scenario, however, for every element that works in favor of the film, there seems to be another working against it. At least with today’s eyes. Join us — Pete Wright and Andy Nelson — as we continue our Naughty Children series with Rilla’s 1960 film “Village of the Damned.” We talk about what works and what doesn’t, as well as why some of that matters more when it comes to actual enjoyment of the film (at least for Andy) and what they could have done to make it better. We chat about the performances, notably George Sanders, Barbara Shelley and Martin Stephens, and what they bring to the table. When it comes to Shelley, we also chat about the fact that her part is largely dismissed and why it bothers us so much. We discuss the look of the film with Rilla’s documentary approach as well as cinematographer Geoffrey Faithfull’s overall look, which worked nicely for us. And we look at MGM’s history with the film and touch on why they filmed it in England instead of Hollywood. It’s a fun film that, if you think too much about, you’ll find tons of problems; Pete sees the problems while Andy sees the fun. Check out the movie then tune in!
