After it is roughly put down, the natural themes appear. Write first. Polish after you know the project works. As with raising children, the writing often turns out 50 percent as anticipated, and the rest takes on a direction of its own.  3) Readers are not fond of being told what they must, should, or need to be, do, or think. They prefer to watch how things work out and then apply what fits in their own life. Don't save anything for the next book. The reader can sense when a writer withheld. Give your best and your all. Her 1950s historical novel, The Willow Still Sings, is available now on Amazon.Tell us the story behind The Willow Still Sings·      The Willow Still Sings is loosely based on my mother's journey with polio. Her faith and compassion in the face of hardship helped me become who I am today. The end of my book includes my mom's story in her own words. I'm awed that her story can encourage and inspire others just as it did me. ·      In The Willow Still Sings, Florence struggles with misplaced guilt from her childhood, which shapes many of her reactions in the novel. My journey mirrors Florence's in that I have struggled with shame but have embraced the hope and healing only God provides. ·      After homeschooling my two sons, I began to pursue writing and speaking full-time. At my first conference, I felt overwhelmed by my lack of knowledge and the eventual rejection. At my second conference, God taught me an important lesson when I lost a contest and had to accept an award for a friend. Be happy for your writing friends and enjoy the journey. Every writer's journey is unique. Your day will come. It won't look like someone else's. But your writing will do just what God wants it to do. ·      Writing The Willow Still Sings helped me realize the truth that there is nothing new under the sun. Polio outbreaks were similar to life during the COVID pandemic. People had to quarantine, and there was widespread fear and confusion. We can learn a lot from our past. Three tips for writers.·      Research helps a story come alive for readers. Research can be conducted in a variety of ways, including my favorites: interviewing others and taking field trips. ·      Events in our lives and the lives of family members can encourage others and provide a way for our loved ones' legacies to live on. ·      Events in our lives and the lives of family members can provide “story seeds” for our current and future projects.  What will the listeners gain from your book? ·      Listeners will learn the importance of perseverance. She lives in Illinois with her family.Susan - Tell us the story behind 63 Hours in HellBehind My Story  I came to faith later in life—at a funeral in my 40s—during a season of deep grief, family struggles, and searching for purpose. That moment changed everything.Before that, I devoured fiction. After accepting Jesus, I felt nudged to step away from it for a season and dive into nonfiction—Scripture, theology, and the writings of those who had gone before me. It became a time to build a strong biblical foundation and truly understand what I now believed.One question sparked the story that would eventually become my book: when Jesus said, “Today you will be with Me in paradise,” where did they go? Jesus didn't ascend to the Father until three days later. That question wouldn't let me go.Over time, everything I had been studying began shaping a story. I eventually returned to fiction—but I wasn't the same writer. I drew from that foundation to share what I had learned through 63 Hours in Hell in a way that isn't preachy, but invites readers into the story.It took me thirteen years to write this book. Looking back, I believe that's because God was shaping me as a writer just as much as He was shaping the story itself. Three tips for writers.1. Your first draft is a discovery draft.You're uncovering the story as you go—so just get it written. You can't fix a blank page. The real magic happens in the editing, so don't get overly attached to those first words. Stay flexible, because you'll revisit that manuscript again and again—and each pass makes it stronger.2. When you're stuck, step away—but stay engaged with the story.When I hit a wall, I don't force it. I step back—research, read Scripture, pray, take a walk. That's often where clarity comes. The key isn't quitting; it's staying connected to the story in a different way until the next piece falls into place.3. Borrow confidence from writers who are ahead of you.Surround yourself with people who know more than you—join a writing group or plug into an online community. Seeing what's possible and hearing their journey helps light the path for yours. Sometimes their belief in you will carry you when your own confidence is shaky. And if you're able, investing in a writing coach can accelerate your growth. What will the listeners gain from your book?    Listeners will be encouraged to keep going. This story shows that stepping into your calling doesn't mean everything suddenly falls into place—there can be resistance along the way. For anyone pursuing a dream, it's a reminder not to give up when things get hard. Sometimes the struggle is part of the journey, not a sign to stop. "When I was writing the book, I used a lot of my interest in art criticism and nature writing to get cross pollinate into my sports writing.
