He shares the terrifying experience of seizures, kidney failure that delayed surgery, a stem cell transplant at Fred Hutch, and living with a titanium plate. Despite enduring more treatment than most typical testicular cancer survivors, Taylor continues fighting with remarkable optimism while managing an active brain tumor and ongoing surveillance.The conversation also explores life after cancer, including adapting to permanent disability, returning to school to study graphic design after seizures changed the course of his career, and finding purpose through creativity. And radiation and chemotherapy don't always stop them from spreading.  It's a daunting class of disease to study, but that didn't dissuade Michelle Monje from trying. Ask most people what a brain chip does and they will tell you it reads your mind. Dr. Michael Lawton implants these devices, and he says that is not what comes off them. He is President and CEO of Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix, the hospital where Neuralink's first human implant was performed, and he has completed more than 10,000 brain operations and clipped around 5,500 aneurysms. Louisa sat down with him inside Barrow to find out what the electrodes actually pick up, how far the technology has come, and where it stops. He walks through the surgery itself. The device goes into the hand knob, one small lobule of the motor cortex, where 64 electrodes have already become 108. The threads carrying them are about a tenth the thickness of a hair, so a robot inserts them while avoiding every arteriole on the surface. You'll hear what Nolan Arbaugh, Neuralink's first patient, can now do with a cursor at world record speed, and why Lawton can't keep up with him in a head to head. Then the correction. The data coming off these electrodes is a train of spikes, the same electrical language every neuron in your head is already using, and decoding it tells you whether a person meant to move a cursor left or right. Reading an emotion, or what someone thinks of you, is nowhere close. The second half turns to the brain Lawton has spent 29 years operating inside. He describes cooling a patient to 15 degrees Celsius and stopping their circulation completely, which shrivels a giant aneurysm like a raisin and opens a short window to repair it. He explains why the hardest cases will still need a pair of human hands, and what he tells trainees who think their craft is disappearing. On brain aging he is direct about what works. He predicts alcohol will be viewed in 20 years the way cigarettes were viewed in the 60s, he takes zero supplements and no peptides, and he says exactly what he can and cannot see when he looks at a living brain on the table. This foundation, also known as the Iron Matt Foundation, was started by young Matt's parents Kelly and Greg after Matt passed away from the Pediatric Brain Cancer Choroid Plexus Carcinoma in 2007, when he was 7 years old. This Foundation focuses on helping families with financial assistance as well as focusing on raising money to award Grants to researchers who are trying to help solve the many issues that are involved with Pediatric Brain Cancer.  This Foundation has now awarded over 100 Grants to researchers in the United States and Canada.

Liam Bascle was only able to live 7 1/2 years because of an Ependymoma Brain Tumor that he was diagnosed with in April of 2015. His persona resonated with many people despite his tender age and many tributes came his way after his very unfortunate passing in November of 2021, after fighting with this Brain Tumor for 6 1/2 years . To honor the memory of their beloved son his father Nick, with support from his mom Sarah, started the Links Fore Liam Golf Tournament in New Hampshire to help raise money for the cause of Ependymoma and Pediatric Cancer. This tournament is now held in  New Hampshire, Colorado, and Louisiana, with at least 4 more locations on the horizon.

  Lynn's oncologist, initially dismissive of cannabis oil, shifted his position after her results — telling her "keep doing what you're doing" and suggesting they had considered a misdiagnosis before confirming the original diagnosis was correct. Diagnosed at 44 with glioblastoma multiforme and given 6–18 months to live, Lynn is now approaching 57 — a remarkable survival given the ~17% two-year survival rate for this cancer type. Chemo and radiotherapy were completed first — six weeks of concurrent chemotherapy and radiotherapy, a six-week break, then oral chemotherapy — before cannabis oil was introduced. Residual effects from treatment include short-term memory problems and poor balance; hearing loss in the right ear (cancer side) was recently resolved by wax removal, which dramatically improved hearing. CBD oil was used during treatment, with full cannabis oil added approximately six weeks after completing conventional therapy. Maintenance dosing consists of two glycerine capsules of cannabis oil in coconut oil taken nightly, producing restful sleep without a pronounced high — described as a mellow, calming effect. Scotland's continued illegality of cannabis was noted, with Lynn expressing optimism that Scottish independence could bring significant policy change. Lynn continues to be contacted by others with the same diagnosis and advises them to do their own research, take supplements, and not simply replicate her exact approach. Diet was significantly changed post-diagnosis: only home-cooked, organic food from a local farm shop, eliminating processed and ultra-processed foods entirely. The journey prompted a deeper spiritual outlook, greater tolerance, gratitude for small things, and a new prayer practice — a transformation Lynn attributes partly to cannabis. If given the choice again, Lynn would not undergo chemo or radiotherapy, citing post-treatment research into its limitations — a view echoed by most guests Ian has interviewed.
