Today we're mixing things up in a big way! After a year of interviewing the top women in business and entrepreneurship, we're officially inviting our first male guest on the Behind Her Empire podcast, Marcus Lemonis. If you tune into today's interview, you'll immediately understand why. Marcus is known for helping struggling businesses get back on their feet by investing his own money on the hit TV show, The Profit. Despite being a household name and TV personality, Marcus' influence is far beyond television. He is one of the most successful entrepreneurs in America, serving as chairman and CEO of the multi-billion dollar company Camping World. Marcus is also one of the biggest champions out there when it comes to small business entrepreneurs, and specifically women entrepreneurs. He's created The Lemon-AID Foundation and seeded it with $50 million of his and his wife's own capital to focus on backing talented founders, especially women and minorities who haven't had equal access to resources and guidance in their careers.Marcus is unapologetically vulnerable, open to sharing all parts of himself, and truly generous in wanting to help others succeed. In today's wide-ranging interview, we talk about how to work through fear of failure & embarrassment, the realities of burnout in entrepreneurship, why he believes women are better business leaders, the importance of embracing your strengths & your flaws to be truly comfortable in your own skin, and so much more. In this episode, we'll talk to Marcus about: * How the fear of embarrassment holds us back and what we can do to move past these feelings. [4:00]* Acknowledging that privilege plays a role in taking chances. [6:01]* It is okay that you feel embarrassed; it is something we all experience. [8:50]* How Marcus uses clothes to make himself feel comfortable in his skin. [9:59]* The freedom that comes when you lean into what makes you unique. [12:45]* It is important not to make money the ultimate benchmark of success. [14:09]* The influence that Marcus's mother and grandfather had on him. [16:39]* Marcus's ultimate mission with the work that he does. [18:48]* Some of the reasons that Marcus thinks women are better businesspeople. [19:26]* You do not have to care what other people think; it is the way you think about yourself. [20:59]* Why Marcus believes the principles of running a coffee shop or a large corporation are the same. [23:17]* How entrepreneurs can develop a consumer point of view. [26:30]* Who Marcus believes should not be entrepreneurs. [28:21]* Why Marcus prefers the term business owner rather than entrepreneurship. [33:13]* Marcus's advice for those of us who feel like we are not enough. [36:23]* What wealth means to Marcus at this stage in his life. [38:47]* Hear the two questions that Marcus asks Yasmin. Marcus Cauchi: Why You Must Prospect for Choice, Ep #243

Sales Reinvented

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 28, 2021 17:47

Prospecting is the lifeblood of every business. Having a full pipeline of qualified prospects means you have choice. According to Marcus Cauchi—a Fractional Chief Revenue Officer for several technology startups—you should have 300–500% more at the “qualified moving to closable” stage of your funnel. You have to drive opportunity with sufficient velocity through the disqualification process.  Marcus emphasizes to make sure that you get to the qualified stage quickly and cleanly with the least amount of effort and waste. When you prospect for choice—and have a full pipeline—you can walk away from bad business and you’re never dependent on any one deal. Marcus shares a wealth of information in this episode of Sales Reinvented—don’t miss it! Outline of This Episode [1:15] Prospecting and lead gen—in Marcus’s words [1:41] You need to prospect for choice [2:50] Marcus’s prospecting and lead generation process  [6:32] What is the red thread? [7:27] Recruit for high intelligence and laziness [10:10] The top skills salespeople should develop [11:42] Top 3 prospecting and lead generation dos and don’ts [13:43] How Marcus turned a cold call into a sale Be ruthless with disqualification Prospecting for choice begins with identifying who is and who is not someone you should be prospecting. Disqualify everyone who isn’t a good fit—that means anyone less than a 100% match. You have to be ruthless with disqualification. You should be ready to go for the “no” and find out why they should not buy. If you don’t know why they need help, the risks they’re trying to mitigate, the problems they’re trying to overcome, or their ideal outcomes, you have no business interrupting them. Don’t neglect any part of the process To prospect for choice, you should also know who your customer is and what they all have in common. Be relevant, timely, respectful of their time, and deliver value on every call. Marcus hates the drivel he hears from people selling marketing automation companies saying it takes 18 attempts to speak to get a conversation in the C-suite. It doesn’t. It only takes one. If it takes more than that, look at your messaging and find out why it’s not working. Odds are, it’s long, it’s wordy, and it’s irrelevant. It talks about your company, your product, and your services. Touch them with stuff that is relevant.  He notes that you have to remember that prospecting doesn’t end after the initial conversation. You must care for the middle of the funnel. It’s hammered into you to prospect and get people into the funnel. Then you’re pushed to get to closing. The middle of the funnel is often neglected. Treat prospecting as a sacred act and make sure that you are focusing on making fewer higher-quality calls, being timely and relevant, and nurture them through the pipeline.  Recruit for high intelligence...and laziness Carl Von Clausewitz wrote a book called “On War.” When he recruited Prussian soldiers, he looked for high intelligence and laziness. Why? It meant minimum effort which equaled a minimum loss of life. You can approach prospecting in the same way. You need to be well organized and good at research. You need to understand your customer’s world and understand their customers. What is the competitive landscape? If you are good at that, you can elevate your prospecting so you can hit the bullseye far more often—with less effort.  Marcus interviewed a couple of ladies in the SaaS space. These ladies were smashing their quotas. But when they do, they sit back and ask themselves “What could I have done better?”  What other skills should a salesperson develop? What are Marcus’s top prospecting and lead generation dos and don’ts? Listen to learn more! Marcus turned a cold-call into a sale Marcus received a call from someone who immediately started talking about financial training. Marcus interrupted this person and said, “I think you’ve got the wrong person.” Turns out, they did have the wrong person. But instead of ending the call, Marcus asked, “What were you hoping to get from speaking to this person?” Marcus converted him into a bootcamp for cold-calling. The moral of the story? If someone has a pulse, start a conversation with them! You never know where your next opportunity will come from.  Resources & People Mentioned BOOK: On War Connect with Marcus Cauchi Connect on LinkedIn Follow on Twitter Connect With Paul Watts  LinkedIn Twitter Subscribe to SALES REINVENTED Audio Production and Show notes by PODCAST FAST TRACK https://www.podcastfasttrack.com

Marcus Aurelius Anderson is an author, TEDx speaker, Keynote Speaker and executive Mindset Coach. While preparing to deploy with the U.S. Army, Marcus suffered a severe spinal injury that left him paralyzed. After dying on the operating table twice, the surgeons saved his life, but told him he'd never walk again. Having no other option, Marcus started doing some brutally honest soul searching, looking for the lesson to be learned from his injury. Once he started seeing his Adversity as a gift instead of a curse, something miraculous began to happen... Marcus now speaks, writes, inspires and teaches others to overcome their own Adversity and actualize their personal definition of success. His TEDx talk "The Gift of Adversity" tells of how we can use our Adversity to make us into better leaders, citizens and human beings. His book "The Gift of Adversity: Overcoming Paralysis and Pain to Find Purpose" is available on Amazon and Kindle. In this episode we dive into: Marcus’ incredible story of overcoming a spinal cord injury How to intentionally introduce adversity into our life as a stimulus for growth. Why we should be living our lives as a series of short sprints rather than a marathon. What it takes to be a good leader and the art of actually applying those principles. The importance of removing our emotional attachment to an event so that we can process things objectively, and how this oftentimes leads to us discovering that the things we thought were problems aren’t actually problems at all. How Marcus freed his mind of the “victim” mentality that had crept in after his surgery. Unconditional gratitude, and using adversity as a compass in which we should actually gravitate towards rather than avoid. How martial arts led Marcus into coaching and teaching and the other skills he learned over his years of training. Why we all need something or somebody to be pushing us and how this accountability can be our missing link for growth. How we can systematically change hardship into opportunity. How we can use “microadversities” daily to build a stronger mind and body. Learning to live every day with a sense of urgency. www.brenttieri.com http://www.marcusaureliusanderson.com/

“The Stoics can teach you how to find a sense of purpose in life, how to face adversity, how to conquer anger within yourself, moderate your desires, experience healthy sources of joy, endure pain and illness patiently and with dignity, exhibit courage in the face of your anxieties, cope with loss, and perhaps even confront your own mortality while remaining as unperturbed as Socrates.” ― Donald J. Robertson, How to Think Like a Roman Emperor: The Stoic Philosophy of Marcus Aurelius Donald Robertson is one of the world's leading experts on Stoicism, especially how it relates to cognitive science and therapy. Donald has spent decades as a clinical psychologist and has been studying the great Stoic classics for just as long. Recently, Donald released a book, part biography, part self-improvement, about the life and philosophy of Marcus Aurelius. It's a truly amazing read, as practical as it is enjoyable. “When we reason well about life and live rationally, we exhibit the virtue of wisdom. Living in agreement with Nature, in part, means fulfilling our natural potential for wisdom; that’s what it means for us to flourish as human beings.” ― Donald J. Robertson, How to Think Like a Roman Emperor: The Stoic Philosophy of Marcus Aurelius In my first interview with Donald, we covered a lot of general Stoic principles, but in this episode we look specifically at decoding the mind of Marcus Aurelius so we can start living more like this philosopher king. “According to Stoic philosophy, when we assign intrinsic values like “good” or “bad” to external events, we’re behaving irrationally and even exhibiting a form of self-deception. Crossing Borders with Nathan Lustig

Play Episode Listen Later May 22, 2018 53:14

Marcus Dantus launched his first tech startup in 1993, selling email addresses through a portal that he hosted on the domain Mexico.com. Born in Mexico City, Marcus studied Media Communications at the University of Pennsylvania, but his career quickly switched to technology when a friend introduced him to the Internet. Since then, Marcus never looked back. He founded a telecommunications company, acted as CEO of a medical device business, was on the founding team of Wayra Mexico, and finally developed and launched Startup Mexico, where he acts as CEO. In this episode, I sat down with Marcus to talk about how he got started in entrepreneurship in Mexico, what it was like to develop a cross-border startup in the early-2000s, how new technologies like blockchain will help LatAm, and what’s next for the Mexican entrepreneurship ecosystem. Selling email addresses on Mexico.com Marcus built his first website in 1993. He quickly realized there was a market in registering and selling generic domains in Spanish after a company paid him $20K for the website ‘andale.com.’ He built a “portal of portals” on Mexico.com, which sold email addresses that were linked to personalized domains. After registering and selling 800 domains, Mexico.com received a US$8M investment from Silicon Valley, even before Marcus knew Silicon Valley existed. The dot com bubble burst just three weeks later. Lessons learned from founding Wayra Mexico Marcus went on to lead two more companies before ‘retiring’ from entrepreneurship to teach in Mexico. Soon after, he received a call from Telefonica to lead Wayra Mexico, and said yes. Marcus’ experience at Wayra helped him create Startup Mexico. Among these lessons, Marcus cites the mistake of giving startups money right off the bat and trying to accelerate a startup in a bureaucratic environment. Building the “Disneyland for entrepreneurs” in seven Mexican cities After leaving Wayra, Marcus set out to transform a warehouse in Mexico City into the “Disneyland for Entrepreneurs,” with backing from the Mexican government. Startup Mexico is an incubator program that provides support, resources, and mentorship for early-stage startups. In many cases, these startups receive little to no investment from the start, though they may eventually receive funding from Startup Mexico’s investment arm, Dux Capital. The program is now available in Mexico City, Merida, León, Querétaro, Nuevo Laredo, Oaxaca, and an office is opening in Guadalajara. Opportunities in the Mexican startup ecosystem Marcus is bullish on the Mexican entrepreneurship ecosystem, but Mexico still has a long way to go. He sees a need for a culture change in a country where failure and success are punished equally. However, Marcus is confident that technologies like the blockchain, big data, automation, and the IoT will change Mexico’s future. Dux Capital invests in clean energy, retail, and tech innovation to help bring those disruptive technologies to Mexico. Marcus was one of the pioneers of the Mexican tech ecosystem and he continues to lead the charge today. To see more of Marcus’ work, check him out on the next episode of Shark Tank Mexico! This is a story about how our host, Marcus Antebi changed my life. The year was 2010. I was a vegetarian at the time, beginning to travel from LA to NYC more frequently for my work in the fashion industry. I remember the sheer terror of landing at JFK, usually at night, starving, then taxiing into the city to start the hunt for something made of plants to eat. It's hard to imagine now, but a mere ten years ago it was almost impossible to find organic restaurants in Manhattan, let alone something vegan or vegetarian. Sources were scarce, and it was even harder to locate something green to eat after a grueling flight across the country had sapped my veggie-hunting energy into oblivion. Then on one of those trips, as my good fortune would have it, I happened to be staying at a hotel on the Lower East Side. As I wandered the crowded streets of my temporary neighborhood resigned to the fact that I would probably have to settle for a bowl of MSG-laden Chinese veggies and rice for dinner, I suddenly saw something that would change my New York experience forever: There it was in all it's mini neon sign glory! "THE JUICE PRESS. ORGANIC, COLD-PRESSED JUICES". Not only had I stumbled across a juice bar (like we had on every other block back in LA) but these guys were badass enough to make and serve COLD-PRESSED juices and smoothies, in the tradition of the late, great Norman Walker. Having been an avid juicer and smoothie wizard myself since the early nineties, I was overjoyed to not only find someone doing it- but doing it oh so right. And thus began my obsession with The Juice Press, and all its glorious organic juices, and superfood snacks. Little did I know, nine years later I would finally track down the man behind it (and his then fiancé Teresa) to get the scoop on his whole juice journey. Our guest Marcus Antebi has since blossomed that tiny shop I first stumbled into at 70 East 1st Street into 71 more stores in 7 states, and counting. His mission is to make healthy, organic, plant-based foods available in a fast, and convenient manner for all who crave it. In this episode you'll learn how Marcus and his partner Michael Karsch created their empire and became the 'juice kings' of New York, and every industry secret nobody else dares to tell. Marcus and his wife Teresa treat the listener to a backstage pass to the current green juice revolution and explain what it takes to source the cleanest ingredients in the world, and why getting fruits and vegetables into your body is crucial to your health. As it turns out, not all juice is created equal, and Marcus teaches us exactly how and why in fascinating detail. If you or someone you know drink fresh-pressed juices and smoothies, you are about to become enlightened to this topic at a depth you never imagined possible. If you've not yet made organic, raw, nourishing plant-based drinks a part of your lifestyle, this show is sure to convince you to do so. Pass this episode along to someone who could use some vitality, energy, and cleansing power in their life. Here's to your greens! Marcus Garrett was born and raised in the great state of Texas. He obtained a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration after surviving the mean streets of the inner suburbs. A decade of professional experience as a Certified Internal Auditor, combined with freelance writing on topics ranging from current events to love and relationships, helped Marcus develop a unique qualitative and quantitative writing style. His book and website, Debt Free or Die Trying, keep readers entertained with cautionary tales and helpful tips for living debt free. Marcus’ mission statement is: To make a difference in the lives of others by helping people develop sustainable plans for staying out of or getting out of debt. No plan, no budget, and no ideas: Can you imagine accruing $26,000 of debt in ONE weekend? Marcus can, because that’s really where his debt story really takes a turn for the worse. That few hours of free spending took him 7 years to pay off. He knows exactly how and why it happened: “I had a detached recognition of money because money just ‘happened’ around me.” He was a young man with no budget and no plan, so a consolidation loan check sent him on a drinking, partying, and shopping rampage. Marcus uses this part of his story to tell us all “what NOT to do.” TWEET: If there is a hustle for a get-rich quick scheme out there, I probably did it, tried it, or tried to get a friend to do it to see if it works. #ChasingDreams   How Marcus ended up doing a podcast: Are you holding yourself back, afraid to take that next step? Marcus and his podcast partner, Rich Jones, started their podcast, but were afraid to tackle personal finance and debt, so they started out talking about “everything else.” Marcus explains how they finally overcame “analysis paralysis” and jumped into the podcast. Marcus says, that with any new endeavor, you need to fail as quickly as possible so you can move on the “next great thing.” TWEET: I thought I was OK since I was covering the minimum payments on my debt. #ChasingDreams   The Plan: Do you find yourself too focused on the end—the championship? Marcus explains why so many people don’t realize that significant changes and decisions are made along the way of your journey. His advice is to acknowledge the problem, put a plan together, and then follow the plan. Marcus says, “Just do it and demonstrate the outcome!” TWEET: I had no budget and no plan. Money was something that came in and went out.  #ChasingDreams     Guest Recommendation: ONE action for a dream chaser to take—“It comes down to having a plan or creating a plan. Most people don’t know what the debt-free dream looks like. Put action items in place for your dream to happen. The plan will tell you how to get there.” OUTLINE OF THIS EPISODE: [2:03] Marcus’ interesting story of his background in debt [2:46] “How I spent $26K in ONE weekend!” [8:39] Marcus’ “Aha” moment, several years later [13:22] Helping people through books and the podcast [18:30] What Marcus and Rich talked about on the podcast, tiptoeing around personal finance [24:02] The painful experience of debt reality [30:35] Applying “The Five Why’s” [31:47] Marcus’ recommendations for others [36:35] In our consumerist society, debt is “the new normal” [38:21] Marcus’ ONE action for a dream chaser   RESOURCES MENTIONED IN THE EPISODE: Marcus on LinkedIn  Marcus on Twitter @PayBalances Marcus on Instagram Pay Balances Marcus on Facebook Paychecks and Balances Marcus’ Podcast Marcus’ Website  Debt Free or Die Trying by Marcus Garrett    TWEETS YOU CAN USE: TWEET: If you are the thing holding yourself back, just STOP. #ChasingDreams TWEET: A lot of smart people are just bad at managing money. #ChasingDreams TWEET: If you make $30K or $300K, it doesn’t matter if you don’t know how to manage money. #ChasingDreams TWEET: If you want to do “normal,” then you WILL be in debt. #ChasingDreams
