Jennifer Coates, friend of the pod, is back to help me consider a new way forward (artwise) after the destabilizing event of the US election. She, herself, is finding comfort in the long history of rocks, geology and the cosmos, while I find myself turning to a book about how Matisse and his daughter, Marguerite, both reacted to the trauma of WWII in opposite yet valid ways. It's a bit of a potpourri, but we promise some great galvanizing art historical quotes and an inspiring double pep talk for the ages. Alternative title of ep: Rock Paper Scissors! Episode IntroLast week I shared stories of my recent trip to Japan. There's one story, though, that's taken on a life of its own since being stateside once again. It all began with a visit to Tokyo National Museum in Uedo Park, seeing objects that have become icons in the UFO/UAP communities. If that wasn't enough, those odd clay figures led me to seek out some of the burial pyramids where they were found. And because I can't let sleeping dogs lie, I dug into the theories about the dogu figures, which I can't wait to share with you. So enough build up, let's get into it!High Strangeness at Tokyo National MuseumIf you listen to Curious Cat in order, first, thank you so much. But, second, I'm sorry you've heard this part of the story before, apologies. Next, we entered a building of archeological finds. Many came from the Kofun period, the 3rd to 6th century, and were buried beneath family dwellings or in burial tombs. The energy was reverent, whispering, hallowed, still, as objects made for the dead sat exposed for the living, the light was soft, but was never meant to touch these. I was keenly aware and took few photos, even though they were allowed. It felt wrong. This area held the dogu. They are unusual sculptures in a variety of forms. Many, most actually, were broken in half intentionally, and buried beneath the floors of family dwellings. And then I saw the figure I'd seen countless times as I watched Ancient Aliens. A goggle-eyed figure, one leg broken clean off, supported by a block of stone. It did look alien, like a person in a space suit. I looked at the backside, the side they never showed in all those episodes. I took photos and my ghost app came on, words lighting up my phone screen, "Dust, Within, Low." That was it.These figures are strange, and I found two more examples of the goggled-eyed ones that I'd never seen before and shot photos. Many have speculated on dogu, saying they are fertility symbols, akin to Venus of Willendorf, or ritualistic. These figures are OLD. And much of the information about them on the internet is stale, clearly repeated from other sources, but there are very few fresh takes. It's frustrating. Some of the information though is verified. Take this from Google, "dogū, abstract clay figurines, generally of pregnant females, made in Japan during the Jōmon period (c. 10,500 to c. 300 bce). Dogū are reminiscent of the rigidly frontal fertility figures produced by other prehistoric cultures."Sources and MaterialsDogu figures: https://www.wasshoimagazine.org/blog/discovering-japan/doguAnother great article about the strange mystery of dogu figurines. https://artscape.jp/artscape/eng/ht/1212.htmlhttps://artrkl.com/blogs/news/the-mystery-of-japans-dog-figuresBest images of dogu with lots of links for further readingAncient Origins of Dogu article to check out! Welcome back to ARTMATTERS: The Podcast for Artists. My guest today is Anne Harris. She is a painter, a curator, a writer, and professor at the Art Institute of Chicago. She has exhibited at venues ranging from Alexandre Gallery and DC Moore Gallery in New York to the National Portrait Gallery at the Smithsonian Institute and many more besides. She is also the originator of The Mind's I, a drawing project done with other artists which has traveled and exhibited nationally and internationally. On today's episode we discuss routine, productively, working slow, numb panic, depression, relevance, on trend/off trend, contracts, royalties, a culture that values art but not artists, drawing, invisible labor, how art develops it's meaning over time and the Venus of Willendorf. As for her studio practice, well, in Anne's own words she wants her “paintings to function like an eyelid, veering from dry to wet, inside to outside, opaque to transparent, form to formless, mute to aggressive, space curved outward toward the viewer, held in by fragile surface tension, the picture plane as membrane, the entire painting an eyelid.”Anne Harris was a blast to talk to, eloquent, honest and insightful. The Venus of Willendorf is believed to be one of the oldest carved representations of a god, in this case, a goddess. The human desire to create art isn't a new one. In fact, it dates back to our very beginnings, when various hunter-gatherer societies wandered the world in search of food and proverbial greener pastures. One such work to survive from that metaphorically dark period of human history is the so-named Venus of Willendorf. Discovered during an archaeological dig in Austria in 1908, she's become legendary in the years since, though she's still just as mysterious to us now as she was then. Find out more about her in this week's episode! --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/historylovescompany/support

Jen Dwyer grew up on the West Coast, in the Bay Area, California and currently lives and works on the East Coast, between Connecticut and New York. Her playful ceramic sculptures, paintings and otherworldly installations evoke dreams, fantasy, and the desire to escape to a world of one's own creation. Through her artwork, Dwyer creates a uniquely powerful, caring, and intimate feminine world, underscored by the artist's study of Paleolithic talismans, the decadent Rococo aesthetic, and contemporary girlhood culture and ecofeminism. Dwyer received a BFA in Ceramics, BA in Environmental Studies and a minor in Art History from University of Washington. She finished her MFA in the Spring of 2019 from University of Notre Dame where she received a Full Fellowship in Ceramics with a Gender Studies Minor. Dwyer has partaken in many residencies and fellowships, including the Pottery Center in Jingdezhen, China; fellowship at Wassaic Projects and the Museum of Art and Design Studio Residency. Recent exhibitions include the Spring/Break Art Fair in New York City, Maxon Mills Gallery in Wassaic, the Snite Museum, at Notre Dame, a solo exhibition in Manhattan, NY at Dinner Gallery as well as recent and upcoming group exhibition at Hashimoto Contemporary Gallery, Gaa Gallery and Jeff Marfa Gallery. "The Female Gaze is an alternative way of seeing that represents everyone as a subject and acknowledges that people have their own complicated narratives. With this idea in mind Jen Dwyer constructs fanciful, porcelain vessels and sculptures that merge iconography from prehistoric imagery, (such as the Venus of Willendorf, which was thought to be a self portrait of the artist), with the Rococo Aesthetic, infused with contemporary feminist themes. Dwyer create an amalgamation of ceramic sculpture and oil paintings to examine contemporary socially constructed notions of identity by invoking the female gaze. The Female Gaze, coined by Jill Soloway, was created in response to Laura Mulvey's theorization of “the Male Gaze,” which is when cinematic depictions of women are seen as objects of male pleasure. The Female Gaze is an alternative way of seeing; a way of looking/representing that seeks to give everyone agency and make everyone a subject. Rococo art was created in reaction to boredom with the serious baroque style, and instead opted to depict humor, wit, emotion, and whimsy. Characterized by its light-heartedness, the Rococo presents itself at a more intimate scale, often in private spaces. I aim to create other worldly Installations, filled with my ceramic sculptures, to blur the barriers between the private and public, subject and object and self and others." Men dagens skönhetsideal ser helt annorlunda ut.
Kick off Women's History Month with a show all about some of the earliest representations of women in art! Anna introduces us to the Venus of Willendorf and her curvy comrades, and shares a research study with very modern take on ancient art. 30.

Dr. Powell-Wiley is a cardiologist who focuses on many components of obesity and its effects on cardiovascular disease. This episode begins with the origin of obesity. Dr. Sogade explains the fattening room, a tribal custom where girls were prepared for womanhood by eating heavy meals in order to gain weight. Fat displayed prosperity, fertility, and beauty. The term obesity, in regard to health, was not used in the English language until the 19th century. In recent years, obesity has become a worldwide public health crisis. The two doctors discuss the social determinants of obesity and obesity-related cardiovascular factors that contribute to race and ethnic disparities. Additional issues associated with obesity in women, such as fertility issues, preeclampsia, and spontaneous miscarriages are also described. This episode concludes with an explanation of Dr. Tiffany Powell-Wiley's research and associated goals. #obesity #cardiovasculardisease #socialdeterminants #obesityinwomen #obgyn #fertility #health
This week, Abigail, Helen and Sara are your favourite exposition crones, as we take a wild ride through The 13th Warrior (1999) - a film that probably would have made a better amusement park ride. Based on Michael Crichton's 1976 novel, The Eaters of the Dead, 13th Warrior tells the story of Arab ambassador, Ahmad Ibn Fadlan (Antonio Banderas) who joins forces with a band of Viking warriors to defeat an ancient, mysterious evil. As part of our ongoing series on Viking adaptations, we talk about Beowulf and its legacy, 90s 'post-racial' weirdness, cultural appropriation, and how exactly the Venus of Willendorf fits into all this. Historical Friction is a podcast about storytelling, pop culture, the past, and why we reenact it. Follow the podcast on Twitter, at @HistoryFriction. We start off with the idea of talking about art techniques, tips and tricks we've mastered and could help people with but the cast turned into a discussion about drawing male and female characters- also trans, androgynous, etc. There's an art to representing gender in imagery! It's super important to remember that the way we see gender in art is mainly culture based rather than an innate biological reaction and the perception of gender in art is different according to your cultural background. It's basically a visual language that everyone learns, but as an artist you have to learn to actually “speak” it, and that's not as straight forward as you think. A rough example of of how culture based our perception of gender in imagery is: - In most Western art the “male” is the default. We take for granted that a figure is male in art unless it's augmented in some way, the most basic version is the stick figure. These are men. To make a female stick figure you add long hair, a dress or boobs. Some or all of that, it doesn't matter. And this scales up to other representations. A natural, more realistic depiction of a female person won't always read as a woman in art unless they are “feminised” in some way, i.e. a prominent bust, removing angles and lines and adding soft, rounded features, featured lips, larger eyes, thin waste, wide hips, long legs, large thighs, styled hair, thin neck, large head. And doing any of that to a male figure is a way to “feminise” them or blend their gender. -In comic art from places like Japan and Korea it's the opposite somewhat, especially manga. The female form there is more of the default. Male characters involve a lot more augmentation to create a “masculine” effect, sometimes bordering on caricature, as can happen with female characters in Western art. A generic male manga character would typically read as more “feminine” if dumped straight into a western context. In times past the focus was more on primary (genitals), or secondary (beards, boobs etc), sexual characteristics, i.e the Venus of Willendorf (a very female form) and male figures with disproportionately sized penises. While early Egyptian sculpture is pretty androgynous in his regard, male and female are not well differentiated, the main focus is on the build - eg. men having slightly broader chests. Early Greek sculpture even more so with simple abstract forms representing “humans”. Much later on this changed into a more separated, codified style: men being heavy, muscular, bearded, women being soft and slim, with youth of both sexes being more androgynous. Interestingly genitals were very diminished in this art, penises were small and flaccid, while vaginas were never depicted. Though it was a different story with the art intended for more secular, “common” consumption, which could show pornographic scenes (mainly 2D). Art featuring Satyrs or Priapus massively exaggerated the genitals for deliberate comedic effect. For them focus on genitals didn't indicate masculinity or femininity so much as comedy, stupidity, shame, or porn. Basically gender in art isn't about genitals or genetics, it's all culture based and you need to learn the visual language of your audience to make yourself understood by them, as well as to confuse them or subvert their expectations! What trouble have you had when depicting gender? I always run into issues myself. I make my women too angular and my men are too slim. With her hands in prayer, still life painter MARYAM AMIRYANI begins each day in her studio with the simple request: The courage to start; the courage to persevere; the courage to finish. From her childhood in Iran to Paris, Washington and New York, Maryam followed a professional career path in and around the arts, helping to show and sell other artists' work before she finally settled into her own painting practice. Sharing her elegantly sparse, light-filled studio in Marfa, Texas with her husband and fellow painter Nick Terry, Maryam now creates small, intimate oil paintings often influenced by textures and colors of her early years in Iran. Maryam balances the solitary nature of an artistic life with an abundance of community service projects that benefit a variety of communities.Find Maryam:Maryam's Work: Ulterior Gallery, NYC (visit) Mentioned:Nick Terry, artist / Maryam's husband (see work) Ulterior Gallery, Takako Tanabe, gallerist (explore) Venus of Willendorf, feminine goddess artifact (learn) Marfa, Texas (visit) Donald Judd, artist (learn) The Chinati Foundation (explore) Find Me, Kristy Darnell Battani:Website: https://www.kristybattani.comInstagram: kristybattaniartFacebook: kristybattaniartDid you enjoy this episode? Buenas.

Warning: Explicit Conversations About Politics, Culture, & Sexuality Navigating between the nice and nasty parts of Naughty November in the wild worlds of sex, politics and bonobos, F.D.R. rolls merrily down the tracks, through the Tunnel of Love and into the Great and Quivering Unknown… High (and low) points include: --Capt'n Max (still Birthday Boy through Naughty November) lurks under a rock, Scorpio-style, stewing over our lovers' quarrel, then turns into a tiger! But we “make like bonobos, not baboons,” and out of the tiger's snarling mouth steps my handsome prime mate, brimming with wit, wisdom and stories galore. --MAGAt Insurrection Fist-Pump Dude Josh Hawley is pumping his little fist at feminism(!) for driving “manly,” ammosexual men to porn and video games; so we attack him back, which is easy, because Naughty Hawley's such a posturing sissy (with apologies to sissies), though his misogynistic, anti-porn fascism is not funny at all. This sparks a naughty chat about Nudist Magazines and the Venus of Willendorf. --Joining the anti-porn brigade from the opposing flank, Gwyneth Paltrow and Jada Pinkett-Smith say “porn is harmful to women.” Not only do they harm sex workers, but what rank hypocrisy coming from Princess Paltrow, born-into-Hollywood-privilege, who's made movies where women are viciously murdered, and Pinkett-Smith, whose tales of her active sex life are click-bait porn. --Christo-fascist, QAnonsense-spewing General Michael Flynn, proclaimed that “one nation under God” really means “one religion under God,” and we all know which “one religion” Flynn means: the so-called Christian one where the cross is a sword, and Jesus open-carries an AR-15. --Stop calling Travis Scott's Astroworld horror “Satanic”! If anything, it was Kardashianic. And Kylie-Jenneric. Don't drag Satan—the Church's *evil* depiction of the great horny, horned, Greco-Roman goat god Pan, Lord of the Wild and patron saint of bonobos (pan paniscus)—into that awful, human-error-riddled tragedy. --Dave M., who thanked the Therapists Without Borders of the Dr. Susan Block Institute for “saving [his] life” last Saturday, how his other therapists have erroneously labeled his “hypersexuality,” aka sex addiction (NOT a valid DSM diagnosis). Dave fantasizes that Max and I emerge from Superman's Bizarro World to wage guerrilla war without weapons against anti-sex capitalism, saying “important dangerous things,” though (he imagines) we are “unattackable”… which is the most Bizarro part, since we're constantly being attacked. --“Sock Job” Gabriel stops pretending to have a girlfriend, and now just wants tips on solo sock jobbing. Moving on to stockings, high heels and bare feet, the foot fetishists flock to this show like a Loubotin and Savage X Fenti sale, and I trample them (virtually) with love (and a little glitter)… sporting shady shades, from pineapple (eat it for better-tasting semen!) sunglasses to Mammon Dollar Eyes. --Britney is FREE—yay! Finally, she can get married and do what the f*ck she wants. Now FREE ASSANGE! At least Belmarsh prison gave him permission to marry his partner Stella Moris, the mother of his two sons, at the prison. Yay! We may be Bizarro, but we love marriage… for people who want to get married. --Kyle Rittenhouse's blubbering performance in the Brett Kavanaugh tradition of lying male ammosexual self-pity, coupled with the judge's blatantly racist rulings, might just get that little crying killer off the hook for the crimes he committed that we all have witnessed. Yikes! --The new Dune remake is a beautiful bore (I wanted more worms!), but it's nice to know that we are all welcome to have public sex in the Spanish Canary Island dunes. Just please don't leave your used condoms in the sand. Speaking of sand, we are sinking into Capitalogenic quicksand, going down deeper and faster every day, mentally (peeps be going nuts), physically (the nuts be killing the rest of us) and in terms of climate change. The sands of time are pouring in on us, but we're too busy staring worshipfully at celebrities like Kylie to hear truthtellers like Greta. Of course, that's the way the billionaires like us to be. --Some commenters express support for our struggle with the City of Arcadia inspector and disdain for their continuing harassment of Bonoboville. What a travesty of zoning justice! What Mattress Madness! More developments developing soon… --In this week's orgiastic throwback, Capt'n Max's Bday & Bonobo Way 3rd Anniversary 2017, sexy Onyx Muse spanks Chimesmaker Jacob, & the amazing Goddess Soma turns Miss Antoinette into a human birthday candle. #GoBonobos for Hot Wax. Happy Friendsgiving and have a nice (not too nasty) Naughty November. Happy February, someone let me off this ride. A lot of smart people have argued that prehistoric human societies were more matrifocal, more cooperative, and less violent. These same smart people also theorize that many (if not most) primitive societies featured a religion based around ideas of fertility and motherhood. While y’all may are not be here for gendered interpretations of what defines fertility, sex, pregnancy, childbirth, and crops, we here at BYWAP can assure you that this is one hell of a goddess roundup. Join us as we celebrate our queen, The Venus of Willendorf; yell about gender, and gendered language, and the limits of academic creativity for naming; stare in awe and terror at half of these hot girls who do hot shit; and appreciate the line “clearly depicted sexual attributes suggest that they are a direct or indirect expression of fertility” from archeologist Nicholas Conrad, who we dunk on for nearly this whole episode.

Programledare: Thomas Nordegren Bisittare: Louise Epstein Producent: Jon Jordås

Have you ever wondered when feedism was “invented”? Where the roots of our kink started? Today we’re taking a look into the past, all the way back to the Venus of Willendorf in our search for fat and feedism in our past and how it has shaped the fat acceptance, fat admiration and feedisms communities of today. Let’s board the history train together.
Thaddeus Russell is a renegade historian and author of A Renegade History of the United States. Within minutes, we're comparing Kim Kardashian to the Venus of Willendorf and comparing porn downloads from Pakistan to Utah. Sex, death, and defecation. Nothing's off-limits with Thad.
This week we put pasties on the Woman of Willendorf, send Robocop to Florence, and take Oliver Wendell Holmes’ lunch money.

Sensationell! Autorin: Justina Schreiber
