We go back to the 80s-restaurant-of-debatable-quality of "It's A Living" with Max Ludwig. This time around we explore a few episodes with Andy Griffith ties, including one where a group of grown adult women dress as children's fairy-tale characters in a way that's not at all creepy! Also Marty absorbs so much content it breaks him. It's "It's a Living" Season 3, Episode 14 "The Doctor Danny Show" and Season 5 Episode 4 "Sweet Charity"
Soraya Simi is the director of the new documentary, ROW OF LIFE, which follows renowned Paralympian and Marine Veteran Angela Madsen on her solo row across the Pacific Ocean. The film quite simply rocks, if I do say so myself. It's on a nationwide tour now; see dates here. In this podcast, I grilled Soraya about the art and craft of documentary filmmaking. How to get funding with a sizzle, A plot and B plot, truth as subtraction, and much more. Soraya is a damn good filmmaker. If you dig this podcast, will you please leave a short review on Apple Podcasts? It takes less than 60 seconds and makes a difference when I drop to my knees and beg hard-to-get guests on the show. A standard thing in stories is to have multiple plot lines. In short stories or when you're just starting out as a writer you tend to have a single line, the A plot, but as soon as you get a bit more experience and write longer stories you'll find the plots tend to branch and multiply, even if you don't always fully intend it. The usual is to have the A and B plots: the A is the main one that drives the story and the B is where you put other interesting junk like character development, villain stuff, comic relief, love interests etc. But it can get a LOT more advanced than that and you can have far more than simply A and B. The genesis of this cast was that I was moaning and groaning about long-form TV series that are intended for binge watching these days. Instead of being reasonably contained episodes you're actually watching a 16 hour long movie and I find that fatiguing and stressful because with those plot structures you feel compelled to watch and finish it (not all in one sitting, but finish it regardless). My complaint was that these things tend to have the A plot as the overarching story plot that connects all the episodes while the B and C plots etc are reserved for the episode itself, and that is NOT how it should be done, at least in my opinion. When series started this trend it would be a C or D line that connected the episodes, just minor developments and a continuing lore. Then it moved up to a B, major story stuff but the main storyline was still episodic, but now it's the A line and that is not cool.. according to me. In the Quackcast we chatted about interesting structures and variations, like twin A plots that complete for attention. One of my personal faves are the A and B plot lines that constantly switch: An A shifts down to be the B and vice versa over and over so you're not sure which is the main line. That's very organic and keeps you on your toes. One of the most boring versions are strict A and B plot structures where it's all pure formula and things just don't break out of that so you know that one line is always less important to the other and things become too predictable. Do you play with A, B, C, D etc storylines or just not bother and let things develop into that on their own, or do you just stick with only an A? And what do you LIKE in stories you consume? Lara and Carey go back to the start, with part 2 of Genesis. They discuss Jacob's golden child Joseph (of dreamcoat fame): sold into Egyptian slavery by his jealous brothers and mourned by his cabaret legend father. With the odds stacked against him, Jacob thwarts seduction by the Pharaoh's wife and quickly rises the ranks from imprisoned seer to Prince of Egypt, while setting us for Exodus. They dig into the glorious B Plot of the widowed Tamar, whose wily ways gag the men of her life to the nth degree. In this conversation, Maverick and Patrick discuss the film 'The Silence of the Lambs' and its standout elements. They highlight the impact of the character Hannibal Lecter, the tension-building in the plot, and the compelling development of the protagonist, Clarice Starling. They also touch on the power dynamics between Hannibal and Clarice, as well as the real-life inspirations behind the characters. The A plot is identified as the interactions between Clarice and Hannibal, while the B plot is Hannibal's escape plan. The main plot of the movie consists of three interconnected dependencies: tracking Buffalo Bill, capturing Buffalo Bill, and Clarice hunting Buffalo Bill. The B-plot is Hannibal Lecter's escape. The movie is unique in that it reveals the identity of the killer early on, focusing instead on the mystery of how everything is connected. The relationship between Clarice and Hannibal is complex, with Hannibal forcing Clarice to confront her fears and grow as a person. Clarice's motivation stems from her traumatic childhood experience of hearing lambs being slaughtered, which drives her to save lives. The ending is ominous, with Hannibal escaping and Clarice receiving a congratulatory call from him. In this conversation, Maverick and Patrick discuss the movie 'The Silence of the Lambs' and its impact. They touch on various themes, including the character development of Clarice Starling, the portrayal of Jack Crawford, the exploration of misogyny, the disturbing nature of Buffalo Bill, and the concept of coveting. They also discuss the cultural impact of the film and its enduring relevance.----------Highlights:0:01 The Impact of Hannibal Lecter8:45 Power Dynamics between Hannibal and Clarice15:42 Hannibal Lecter's Inspiration24:37 A Plot v B Plot35:20 Maverick's Thoughts On Plot Flow40:29 Clarice's Motivation: Saving Lives and Confronting Fears48:02 Dr. Chilton and Jack Crawford52:10 Mysogyny in Silence of the Lambs58:01 Jame Gumb as the villain "Buffalo Bill"1:02:34 Themes and Messages1:08:26 The Cultural Impact and Lasting Relevance----------Show Notes: 9 Points Rating System: https://www.alostplot.com/9-points/ Hannibal Lecter Cookbook: https://a.co/d/05xf31Xa #hanniballecter #silenceofthelambs #claricestarlight #alostplot #filmreview #horror #killer #buffalobill #fbi #bleatingofthelambs #escape #serial #scary #classic #culturalimpact #cookbook #insaneasylum #dr

Bar Association (Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, S4 E16) was recommended by Crimson, He/Him, who said: It's the Union Episode, what's _not_ to love about it? Is it Grand Epic Dominion War stuff? No! Is it Far Beyond the Stars? No! But is it still infuriatingly relevant, just like listening to an old Jim Crose or Woody Guthrie song? Absolutely! Does it also feature O'Brien hamming it up about all his unionmen ancestors who died horrible deaths at the hands of cruel bosses, a fact about which he's quite proud, as any good Irishman would be? Absolutely! (Now, is this the correct way to go about forming a union? Absolutely not! They jumped way in the deep end w/out setting up support correctly, but...oh well. Oh well! Such is Rom.) This is a great episode with basically no room at all for a B-Plot, which I think is just fine. Welcome to the Industrial Workers of the Worlds, Fellow Workers!Bar Association first aired on February 19, 1996, written by story by Barbara J. Lee & Jenifer A. Daily Soap Opera Spoilers by Soap Dirt (GH, Y&R, B&B, and DOOL)
Click to Subscribe: https://bit.ly/Youtube-Subscribe-SoapDirt Bold and the Beautiful sees Eric Forrester's (John McCook) health crisis deepens. Fans are left wondering if history is repeating itself, drawing parallels between Eric's current health issues and a past storyline where he was poisoned. While we hope for a misdiagnosis, the lack of concrete medical explanation by the network fuels rumors of foul play. Rumors are further stoked by the sudden reappearance of Donna Logan (Jennifer Gareis) in Eric's life, mirroring a situation where Eric was poisoned during a tryst with Donna, orchestrated by Pam Douglas (Alley Mills)to weaken Eric's ability to perform in bed on the CBS soap opera. Curiously, Pam is back to baking her infamous lemon bars, stirring memories of the time she dosed them with toxic potassium chloride. Despite Sheila Carter's (Kimberlin Brown) notorious past on Bold and Beautiful, the focus is not on her as she is currently engrossed in her romance with Deacon Sharpe (Sean Kanan) and reconnecting with her son Finn (Tanner Novlan). Despite the absence of Quinn Fuller (Rena Sofer), she could potentially be the prime suspect if it's not Pam and if Eric tests positive for poisoning. As the Bold and the Beautiful unravels, the return of Eric's daughter, Bridget Forrester (Ashley Jones), a doctor who could potentially save her father's life, brings hope amidst uncertainty. This Okona is OUTRAGEOUS! The eponymous captain is introduced ass-first and there isn't a more perfect metaphor for this episode. The main plot is cute, and it's cool to see an actor who might have played Riker charm the main cast - and several ladies aboard the Enterprise. But the B Plot of Data trying to find comedy is stretched thin when the holodeck selects Joe Piscopo as the end-all be-all of stand-up comedy to teach him. Especially when Whoopi Goldberg was right there! Jimmie G. hosts this episode and brings his buddy Zoltan Szabadi on board to talk Trek, Kate doesn't remember Joe Piscopo fondly, Erik waxes poetic about Teri Hatcher and William O. Kate and Lauryn come back into that mid-bouquet toss cliffhanger and dive right into how great this book is at modeling behavior and teaching lessons related to blending families... until it takes a complete left turn with Dawn’s gaslighting of Mary Anne to scare her out of their shared bedroom (for which there is no comeuppance or lesson learned on Dawn’s part). We realize how much seeing Dawn’s perspective and hearing her internal monologue makes us see her in a worse light (similar to Mary Anne in the last book), despite the fact that typically one sympathizes most with the narrator of a story. Frustrating is the word of the book – both when it comes to Mary Anne and Dawn’s actions and character beats and how close this book comes to getting it right. There’s also a Pike Plague that lends itself well to an unrelated B Plot that gives us a nice reprieve from the Schafer-Spier drama. As usual, we have some fun on- and off-topic tangents, including: the Hays Code, that quintessential Sex and the City bouquet toss moment in real life, the BSC wearing surgeons’ masks to protect themselves and others and just how relevant that is to today, Kristy’s great joke in response to Claudia trying to make herself smarter, how much we love our girls just being friends and having fun, WTF a sorehead might be, seatbelt safety protocols, and candy necklaces (whether homemade or purchased). DS9’s “Meridian” and the 1954 Hollywood musical that inspired it. Perhaps more so than any other Star Trek series, Deep Space Nine leaned heavily for inspiration on the world of 20th-century film. But not every futuristic retooling of a classic movie could reach the heights of “Badda-Bing Badda-Bang,” which we discussed in our previous episode. Perhaps the least-successful of DS9’s cinematic adaptations was the third-season episode “Meridian,” which took its central conceit from the 1954 MGM musical Brigadoon, about a magical Scottish village that appears only once a century. So what exactly was lost in translation between the Scottish Highlands and the Gamma Quadrant, and how could the DS9 writers have approached this particular challenge differently? Or was the whole enterprise simply a fool’s errand—Brigadoomed from the start? In this episode of Primitive Culture, Duncan Barrett and Tony Black answer these questions and more. Matt and I drove from Fargo ND to St. Paul MN and met up with buddy and fellow comedian Andy Mattfield in his BEAUTIFUL NEW HOME. I wanted to see if I could eat an entire case (30 burgers) of White Castle and race each other. It ends poorly and shamefully and I am ashamed of the whole ordeal. There is a hidden B-Plot to this episode. #magicsbiggestsecretsrevealed on Twitter if you find it out. Hope you enjoy! Part 2 coming next week.

Betsy wants Steven Wakefield to hang out with her all the time and reminisce over the death of her sister/Steven’s-former-teen-lover-with-leukemia, Tricia. Jess combats the untimely return of her own personal Bitch Eating Crackers by attempting to push Cara Walker onto Steven despite the fact that he prefers to spend his days staring at the endless stream of creepy hand drawn portraits Betsy keeps gifting him of Tricia. In the B Plot, Liz is suffering from Baader-Meinhof syndrome and thinking she sees Todd everywhere. Turns out, it’s not Todd, but it IS another mega-douche dude who falls for some sort of Twin Trickery Volleyball Move at a charity volleyball tournament before never being mentioned in this universe again! And somewhere in there, Jess is trying to become a movie star. (It doesn’t go as planned.) Is Hunter Biden your own personal Bitch Eating Crackers? Hit us up and let us know! Mob Mentality and “A Man Alone.” Justice requires facts, facts require information, and information can only be obtained when one is willing to listen. In “A Man Alone,” an accusation against Odo—one based on few details and driven by preconceived notions—almost cost DS9's resident shapeshifter his life. It was a 24-century situation that mirrors the present day all too well. A perceived misstep gave a few people with a vendetta a chance to take down someone they didn't like, and misinformation coupled with disinterest in facts drew a mob around the cause. In this episode of The Orb, hosts C Bryan Jones and Matthew Rushing discuss Deep Space Nine's “A Man Alone” within the context of social media and the troubling state of discourse in today's world. Looking at mob mentality, we explore whether we are information-poor individuals in an information-rich world, how preconceptions and impatience drive division, and why only by listening to and working together with those who hold differing opinions from our own can we reach the future that Gene Roddenberry envisioned. We've all been sick but we managed to claw ourselves out of bed and into the studio. After last episode's discussion of 90's-set Captain Marvel we decided to revisit the 90's, the era of 'girl power' and look at some kickass women of 90's cinema. Turns out we were in for quite a culture shock. Tom goes on some of his usual social rants so be warned. 00:00 – Intro and sickly chat; Dee’s not well this week but it’s been a calamitous period for the whole family 02:49 – Avengers Endgame leaks and ACCIDENTALLY tripping on spoilers 06:20 – TRAILER: Star Wars; the Rise of Skywalker (with a sprinkling of trolling from Tom). What does the title mean? Does Luke return or does ‘Skywalker’ refer to something else? 13:19 – Let’s talk the female action heroes and the scarcity of female action heroes in the 90’s. The rule is that it the movie had to be a vehicle for the Female Action Hero. 16:06 – Film No. 1: Tank Girl starring Lori Petty, Malcolm McDowell and Naomi Watts. Is it as good as Tom remembers and is it as good as Dee was expecting? Nope! Overall it is a very problematic film but for the time is kind of ground-breaking which is kind of sad when you think about it . 40:06 – That time Tom was in the test audience for an embarrassing film 41:09 – Film No. 2: The Quick and the Dead starring Sharon Stone, Gene Hackman, Russel Crowe and Leonardo DiCaprio. Again, is it as good as Tom remembers and is it as good as Dee was expecting? Double Nope! Sharon Stone is essentially relegated to B-Plot in her own film. 58:26 – Let’s move on and talk about a film we really love: Film No. 3: The Long Kiss Goodnight starring Geena Davis and Samuel L. Jackson, written by Shane Black and Directed by Renny Harlin. It is one of our favourite films, it’s as good and as camp and as cheesy as we always remember it. 01:11:00 – A quick aside about Cat-Calling because of something that happens in the film 01:14:03 – Back to The Long Kiss Goodnight 01:22:26 – The Long Kiss Goodnight’s legacy and the shape of female lead action movies today 01:28:10 – Dee’s homework: Captain Marvel; the 2014 run of comics. 01:35:20 – Tom’s Homework: A Study in Emerald by Neil Gaiman 01:40:47 – This week’s homework assignment: Tracy Queen and the Oneshi Press Annual Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker except it's 'What's Up Danger' Do your usual Amazon shop while helping us at no extra cost to yourself! Short Treks and bite-sized content. Between 1966 and 2001, Star Trek seemed to be the incredible shrinking franchise. The 50-minute running time of The Original Series gave way to the 44 minutes for episodes of The Next Generation, 43 minutes for Deep Space Nine and Voyager, and a lean 42 minutes by the time of Enterprise. But when Trek made the leap to a streaming service with Discovery, all bets were off. The length of an episode began to vary from week to week, depending on the needs of the story. More striking than Discovery’s variable length, however, was the decision to release a series of shorts between seasons. This short-form approach to storytelling was previously the domain of fan films, not officially licensed Trek. In this episode of Primitive Culture, hosts Duncan Barrett and Clara Cook look at the Short Treks in relation to both Star Trek’s own short and long forms—from The Animated Series (22 minutes) to The Motion Picture (well over two hours), and also in relation to short fiction in general. Is brevity truly the soul of wit? What does it mean for Star Trek to embrace the format so readily? And is something inevitably lost when our content keeps shrinking and shrinking? Today on Plushienatural, we’re looking at season 1, episode 2, “Wendigo.” First we talk about why Sam Needs a Gosh-Darn Hug when we discuss the episode’s (semblance of a) B Plot, and then we take a look at Not Ready For Prime Time Alden Ehrenreich and…some other people, including a hot girl with abandonment issues, in the A Plot. Marvel as Sam goes “Hot Blooded” with rage multiple times and Dean sounds nothing like he will in two seasons! Also, we get a Lore update from Sammy Winchestbear, we give out awards for LVP and Best Song, and Sammy and Dean (Wbear) tell us why Plushies Make Everything Better. Clips Notes (see what I did there?) I am now able to clip from the (US) broadcast version of the episode, so when I mention a song, you’ll actually hear it! I will still note that it’s in the DVD version rather than the streaming version when I know the streaming version has replaced music. In Clip 6, the siren is part of the clip, not outside your house/car. In Clip 7, the baby crying is part of the clip, not a real baby. Some of the clips are just really freaking long and I apologize for that. Most of them are actually cut down from the original versions I made. NX-01 Movie Night: Frankenstein. Friendship and fellowship is important for people's general health and well-being. All of the Star Trek series have shown some sort of interaction between the members of its crew on screen in varying ways. The Next Generation had poker, Deep Space Nine had Vic's lounge, Voyager had Sandrine's and the resort program, and Enterprise had movie night. Since the invention of home video releases of films, many fans of movies have participated in an event know as "Movie Night!" People gather together in a group, watch a movie, and then discuss the film in a casual conversation. Sometimes they even go out for a slice of pie while they discuss. In this episode of Warp Five, hosts Brandon-Shea Mutala, Patrick Devlin, and Brandi Jackola are joined by Mike Schindler to discuss the 1931 film Frankenstein starring Boris Karloff. Original Fuckboi Bruce Patman has fallen head over heels (GET IT?) for beautiful, rich, and pale Regina Morrow. Regina has it all... EXCEPT FOR HER HEARING. Because she's deaf, you guys. OR IS SHE?! Well, you'll just have to listen to this episode or fly to Switzerland to find out! (You'll also have to listen to discover the significance of Switzerland in that reference.) Over in the B Plot, Liz collects accolades for doing nothing and claiming to be organizing a school carnival to raise money for "handicapped children." Don't worry - the phrase makes us uncomfortable, too. Jessica and Ol' Flat Face Lila Fowler set up a really dumb bet, OFFLF meets a hottie construction worker and is convinced he's secretly a high-powered prince moonlighting as a day laborer because she's elitist trash and we've come up with a new nickname/way to troll fictional character who incites rage in us, OG Nice Guy Winston Egbert.
In the course of us doing this show we've learned one thing: cop dramas are mehhh at best, blah at worst, but when you add a delightful twist they become, slightly enjoyable. iZombie is a story about a medical student turned zombie trying to live in a anti-zombie world. She tries to manage her cravings, help her friends and city, and be a treasure while doing it. There's a B Plot that's not very great, but over all Liv, Ravi, Clive, Rob Gronkowski, and even Pam make it a fun to watch take on an age old story. Tune in each Monday as we choose a new show and make more wildly inaccurate assumptions. Okay byeeeeee.

Free men (and women) of Zeist, hear us! You stand without an exhaustive review of the infamous Highlander II for the last time. In the first step of their epic quest to unpack this baffling sequel, the Rewatchers explain the various versions of the film, debate the virtues of hammy screen legend Michael Ironside, dish on Connor's bizarre old man existence, and struggle in vain to determine which plot in this movie is the "B-Plot."

Nyota Uhura. Of all the characters in The Original Series, probably none was more underutilized than Uhura. In this episode of Standard Orbit, Mike and Drew talk about the communications officer of the original Enterprise who could have been so much more had times been different. It seems that Uhura was just filling a seat that needed to be filled on the bridge. Was this a matter of race, or just of her not being one of the three main characters? Find out what we think of how Uhura was used, and how more plots should have rightly focused on her.
