On December 8, 2024, Syrian rebels stunned the world when they seized Damascus and toppled the government of Bashar al-Assad, more than 13 years into the country's brutal war.  Spearheading the rebel offensive was Abu Muhammad al-Jolani, the leader of the Syrian militant group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) — and a man who has been designated a terrorist by the U.S. since 2013. In 2021, FRONTLINE correspondent Martin Smith became the first Western journalist to interview Jolani. That's why in today's podcast, I have an amazing conversation with Carole Lamarque, the founder of Duval Union. Who is Carole?Carole has always been interested in crisis management and dealing with exponential growth. Remaining calm in the centre of a storm is what she has been doing for years on end. She says her passion for marketing defines her and she always seeks to go viral and create exponential growth. She also has written multiple books to inspire other leaders to deal with crises.What's the secret to leading in chaos?Sooooo, how the hell are we supposed to satisfy our investors and bosses with so little information? How are we supposed to keep up and not burn ourselves out in the lightning-fast times? Carole gives us four great tips for this!First of all, crises are here to stay. Our world is in a constant state of change and accepting this will make our lives so much easier. It is super important not to prepare for the previous crisis, but rather, we should understand what we can take from one crisis to another. We need to accept that we will never have all the information to make decisions. If a leader can accept that chaos is a normal part of the process, they can help their colleagues calm down and be in the right state of mind to make decisions and be innovative. Secondly, creating the habit of making and changing plans on the go is one of the most important tips great crisis managers give. It's not the ability to follow a plan that's important, but rather having the agility to adapt to and overcome uncertain situations. You should manage unexpected situations through your agility habits, not because you had a certain plan in advance.Thirdly, remember that you are never alone. You're only one element in the solution to a problem. Share your knowledge with others and don't underestimate their power to help you!And last but not least, never stop learning! Everything around us is changing all the time, so keeping up is super important. It's never too late to pick up classes or courses to learn about upcoming trends or read a good book about it.How to properly get help from othersIf you want to deal with chaos and uncertainty, you should never underestimate the help you can get from others, even if they have a different area of expertise. There are many ways of getting help from others and Carole gave me a couple of great tips. First of all, never underestimate the power of youth. What others sometimes see as naiveté, can often be a clever idea that can lead to great innovation. You also need a lot of energy in chaotic times and youngsters have plenty of that!Another great way of getting help, is to have conversations with people who have a completely different area of expertise and analyze the process they follow in uncertain times. You can often draw things from these conversations that you can apply to your work as well!I mentioned youngsters before, but that of course doesn't mean you should discard advice from more experienced persons. They have dealt with crises many times before and you can learn a lot from them as well!

Comandanta Ramona became the nom de guerre for the Mayan woman who saw injustice all around when she looked at the way women were treated in her community and the way the Mexican government treated her people, an indigenous population in southern Mexico. Setting aside dreams of having her own family, she instead dedicated her entire to fighting for more rights and freedoms for her impoverished people, who lived in Chiapas. She joined the EZLN, the Zapatista Army of National Liberation, and rose to become one of seven commanders within the organization. She helped recruit more and more women until the army consisted of one-third women. Comandanta Ramona also fought for also fought for and gained women's rights within her community. She created the Revolutionary Women's Law, which consisted of 10 provisions designed to give women more rights, freedom, and put them on a more equal footing with men within their communities and families.

On this day in Tudor history, 21st October 1536, during the Pilgrimage of Grace rebellion, Lancaster Herald had an encounter with armed peasants on his way to Pontefract Castle and then met with rebel leader, Robert Aske, at the castle. The meeting didn't go well, with Aske putting his foot down and not allowing the herald to complete his mission. What was going on? Who was Lancaster Herald? They had a bit of a bromance really, with Henry calling Francis his "beloved brother" and Francis instructing his sons to be "loving always" to Henry. Taabi's reconnection with Sapphire is interrupted when the party is suddenly ambushed by a band of Rebels, who were looking to liberate slaves being transported along the road. After the party proved their caravan was of free people, Leda, the Rebel Leader told the party of more slavers operating out of the city of Marin's Port. She describes two slavers Lord Sumi and Astrid who are rumoured to be at odds with one another.  The party enter Marin's Port and go undercover at a fancy hotel to gather information on the slavers in the hopes of pitting them against each other. On this day in Tudor history, 7th April 1537, Robert Aske and Thomas Darcy, 1st Baron Darcy, were sent to the Tower of London.  Both Aske and Darcy had been involved in the Pilgrimage of Grace rebellion of 1536, with Aske being "chief captain" of the rebels. Pay for classes that didn’t apply directly to their job. “We’re not here to help people self-actualize.” Who out there are creating great workplaces and how are they doing it. Studs Terkel - Read him. “Often times our work is violent, to our spirit.” You can continue to have a violent workplace or you can do something to make a more optimistic workplace. You don’t have to stay stuck there. Management needs to evolve. Leadership and Stewardship. “Management” is about control and monitor and manipulate. People want to connect, want purpose, want freedom to get the job done, to be responsible. “Management” should steward and take care of the people and create an environment of success and creativity. Not just people first. Purpose, meaningful work, and Extraordinary people to create an amazing work environment. The three work together as the origins of optimism. Bob Chapman says that he’s yet to find someone disagree with him that “Everybody Matters”. What he does struggle to find, is the people willing to follow through and make the changes necessary to move the needle on human workplaces. Somebody has to go first in creating a workplace where everybody matters. And they’re not sure what to do. Shawn has created tools at the end of his book to help people, especially middle managers. "For us, family, husband, children, a belief, it is important. You have to respect it to better denounce the scourge of female circumcision. So I say without aggression, "it must cut anything." Or I talk to women so they no longer tolerate humiliating marriage, but respecting their values. Because, often they’re based on deeper seated assumptions on human behavior and interaction. Climate is what it’s like to work somewhere. (Hay group?) More influenced by someone’s immediate leader. How your leader shows up at work. 70% of the work experience is determined on your direct management experience. Great company culture is not a millennial thing, but a human thing. However, 71% of millennials cite meaningful work as a priority. Social Strategy  - Open, transparent - our brains are wired for connection and this is why social media is so popular. Create rich strong relationships within the workplace. To thrive in this social environment - where are they creating social connections and being transparent. South Sudanese rebel leader Riek Machar has been sworn in as first vice president. He arrived in Juba the capital on Tuesday, after repeated delays to implement a peace agreement. Machar resumes a post he held before the conflict erupted in December 2013. The development ends his 28-month military conflict with President Salva Kiir, which has killed tens of thousands of people. East African leaders have welcomed the swearing in of South Sudan's rebel leader Dr. Riek Machar hours after he returned to the capital Juba on Wednesday. Kenya's Foreign Affairs Minister Dr. Amina Mohammed said Machar's return fulfills one of the conditions of the peace agreement signed last year and offers a chance for the world's youngest nation to end the two year conflict in the country.
