For millions of years, evidence suggests that humans lived in relatively equal societies, where food acquisition and child raising were shared activities among community members both men and women, together. It is apparent that our environments of evolutionary adaptation, selected for humans with evermore prosocial traits. Domination and competition were minimized in favor of collaboration and partnerships of mutual aid. The idea that any human was superior to another would have been an absurdity. Contemporary forager societies also exhibit collective regulation of resources and power, diminishing anyone who may try to take more than their fair share or exhibit dominance over others. Only within that last 10,000 years or so, does the evidence show that a small number of societies turned to systems of domination, who then conquered the world and created hierarchies of rank, class, and everything else. Rewilding is an endeavor to live more closely to how we evolved to live, and in order to do so we must dismantle the mismatched environment that these dominating societies have created. How and when did this switch to domination happen, why did it happen, and is it possible to work our way back to egalitarianism? These are central questions to the rewilding movement, and they also happen to be the life's work of anthropologist Douglas Fry, who has come on the podcast to discuss this with me. Douglas P. Fry is a researcher at AC4 at Columbia University and Prof Emeritus at University of North Carolina at Greensboro. He earned his doctorate in anthropology from Indiana University in 1986. Dr. Fry has written extensively on aggression, conflict resolution, and war and peace. He is currently researching how clusters of neighboring societies, peace systems, manage to live without war. He has authored countless academic journal articles on the subjects as has written many books, such as Beyond War and The Human Potential for Peace, as well as serving as co-editor of Keeping the Peace: Conflict Resolution and Peaceful Societies Around the World and Cultural Variation in Conflict Resolution: Alternatives to Violence. His most recent book, Nurturing Our Humanity, is co-authored with Riane Eisler. Eisler and Fry argue that the path to human survival and well-being in the 21st century hinges on our human capacities to cooperate and promote social equality, including gender equality.Notes:Douglas Fry UNC Greensboro Faculty PageDouglas Fry @ Research GateNurturing Our Humanity at Bookshop.orgSustaining Peace ProjectSocieties within peace systems avoid war and build positive intergroup relationshipsMentions:Brian Ferguson's “Pinker's List: Exaggerating Prehistoric Mortality”The Chalice and the Blade by Riane EislerHierarchy in the Forest by Christopher BoehmBringing Down a DictatorBlueprint for RevolutionGlobal Nonviolent Action DatabaseWhy Civil Resistance Works by Erica ChenowethSupport the show

Gamers some games hold a special place in our hearts, but have been left behind with our advancement in technology. I'm discussing a few iconic games that need a remake so old school gamers can get an awesome dose of nostalgia, and newer gamers can see why we loved them so much! Need a clear decision-maker in high-stress military operations critical to the defense of the United States? Then this week's Team Never Quit guest, Todd Deghetto, is your man. After 30 years as a Navy SEAL officer in Naval Special Warfare, Todd's current mission is to develop future leaders in mental toughness, discipline, & building collaborative teams. Todd, Marcus, and Morgan share an engaging conversation including actual mission details, its personal & mental ramifications, and the steps to recovery. Everyone on Todd's team has a purpose. In this episode you will hear: It doesn't matter what people think about you. Do what's right, regardless of the consequences. If you lose friends over it, they weren't true friends. Having a dad as a New Jersey State Trooper, I learned about the evil in this world, and I learned about honor – doing what's right. That's the nice thing about diving without O2. If you gotta die, that's the way to go, because you just fall asleep. [In combat] You get real good at completely cutting your head off from the rest of your body - No feelings, no emotion, and no pain. I truly didn't start processing stuff until after I was done. When things are going sideways is when people show their true colors. When I returned, God put it on my heart to mentor the next generation. I'm a leadership coach & mentor for the University of Tennessee's MBA program. I may not have the business expertise, but I've got a lot of leadership experience. The only way you're gonna get better is to be able to say “this is mine.” This I made that decision, and this is why I made that decision. We learn more from our mistakes than we ever do when things go right. I took me several weeks after I returned - and all of a sudden I woke up one day feeling like a huge weight had been lifted off my shoulders. All the explosives, the blasts, the mortars, the rockets, the charges, the AC4's – the damage done to the brain is devastating. The healing journey has been the hardest thing for me. Part of that journey is not quitting om my family. [In military leadership] We're very good at controlling everything we can control. There's psychedelics treatment out there to really help us guys. My initial thought was “no way”, but it truly helped me.
In this episode, Xavier Bonilla has a dialogue with Peter Coleman regarding toxic polarization in society. They define toxic polarization and what makes the current moment unique from other moments in social history. They talk about in-group/out-group dynamics and why dialogue is essential. They discuss attractors and the importance of Kurt Lewin's field theory. Peter explains his five-factor model of the way out (reset, bolster, complexity, movement, and adaptation) and how we can use complexities to have dialogue with others. They discuss how people can fix polarization at the individual level and possibly at higher scales. Peter Coleman is Professor of Psychology and Education at Columbia University at Teachers College and The Earth Institute. Peter directs the Morton Deutsch International Center for Cooperation and Conflict Resolution (MD-ICCCR), is founding director of the Institute for Psychological Science and Practice (IPSP), and is co-executive director of Columbia University's Advanced Consortium on Cooperation, Conflict, and Complexity (AC4). He is the first recipient of the Early Career Award from the American Psychological Association (APA), Division 48: Society for the Study of Peace, Conflict, and Violence, and has also been awarded the Morton Deutsch Conflict Resolution Award by APA and a Marie Curie Fellowship from The European Union. In 2018, Dr. Coleman was awarded the Peace Award from Meaningful World, in celebration of their 30th anniversary and the UN's International Day of Peace. He is the author of numerous books, including his most recent book, The Way Out: How to Overcome Toxic Polarization which can be purchased here. You can find many of his published work here and here.

George Bernard Shaw who once quipped that "youth is wasted on the young," couldn't be more wrong when it comes to climate activism. The world they build today is the world they will inherit tomorrow. In this episode we talk about climate and sustainability education for young activists and educators. Cassie Xu, the director of outreach and education at the Earth Institute, speaks with high school students Lily from Brooklyn (15:34) and Sophia from McLean, Virgina (28:00). They talk about their passion for climate change activism in their communities and their hopes for the future. We also hear from Cassie about the K-12 education program and the upcoming non-degree programs designed for high school students and educators who want to bring climate science into their classrooms. One of the instructors, Joan Lopez, a researcher at AC4 talks about the class he'll be teaching and his own experiences working with youth leaders all over the world (2:30). The one common thread he says? Young people are not too happy with the older folks. You can find Pod of the Planet wherever you listen to podcasts, on Apple iTunes, Spotify, Soundcloud, and Stitcher.

Accomplished astrophysicist and mathematician Larry Liebovitch discusses his current work on the AC4 Sustainable Peace Project with project lead, Peter T. Coleman. Liebovitch is a Professor of Physics and Psychology at Queens College of the City University of New York and also currently an Adjunct Senior Research Scientist at AC4. The professors discuss their collaborative work over the past three years with a team of scholars and practitioners on trying to understand peaceful societies and their core dynamics. Professor Liebovitch shares insights about the mix of time-honored and contemporary tools they are using on this project to understand complex systems of peaceful societies and to create models and real world applications from their understanding so that policymakers will be able to think more carefully about what they're doing in their communities to create peace. "This has been fun for me to work with because it is applying things from the physical sciences to a situation that is a lot more difficult to understand." All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights," this is the first statement of Article 1 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Since this declaration's adoption in 1948, political rights have been foregrounded. Now the time has come for humankind to give dignity sustainable attention. Human rights are embedded in dignity, but dignity has a larger humanizing scope than rights. Dignity entails justice and peace, and it manifests as unity in diversity and supports an ethics of care. Evelin Lindner's work focuses on human dignity and humiliation. She is the Founding President of Human Dignity and Humiliation Studies (HumanDHS), a global transdisciplinary fellowship of concerned academics and practitioners who wish to promote dignity and transcend humiliation. She is a Co-founder of the World Dignity University initiative. She has a dual education as a Medical Doctor and a Psychologist and carries two PhDs (Dr. med. and Dr. psychol.). She teaches globally. She is a research fellow at the University of Oslo, Norway, is affiliated, among others, with Columbia University in New York City (with the Advanced Consortium on Cooperation, Conflict, and Complexity, AC4), and with the Maison des Sciences de l'Homme in Paris.
Dr. Kenneth Kressel studies the nature and management of social conflict, with a particular focus on the use of third party mediation as a method for resolving highly polarized conflicts. In this conversation with Dr. Beth Fisher-Yoshida of AC4, he shares knowledge and insights on the role of tacit knowledge in mediator decisionmaking and on different mediator styles. "All mediation is local... context shapes the process," says Dr. Kressel, a professor in the Department of Psychology at Rutgers University, with PhD from Columbia University.
