In this episode of FEPS Talks, Professor Emerita Marguerite Mendell (Concordia University) shares some lessons from her long-term engagement with the development of the social economy in Quebec, but also her contribution to related discussions in Europe and various international organisations. In her view, a number of European countries offer remarkable examples of social economy transitions and experiments, and also at European Union level there have been important initiatives to develop the necessary ecosystem. The question that remains nevertheless is how to assure implementation within member countries. Going beyond a transatlantic comparison, she also mentions recent efforts from African countries. At the end of the conversation with FEPS Secretary General László Andor she explains the connection between her commitment to the social economy and the inspiration stemming from the study of the works of Karl Polanyi.

According to the UN Refugee Agency, more than 100 million people were forcibly displaced in 2022. With Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine, Europe has seen the biggest refugee crisis since the Second World War with more than 6 million people fleeing Ukraine. This is a big challenge for refugee protection and reception systems. Clearly something public services cannot stem on their own. This is where the social and solidarity economy steps in and steps up to both support governments and fill gaps and public support. This podcast discusses how the social and solidarity economy can fast track the labour-market integration of refugees and migrants. Welcome to Managing Around, the podcast exploring the intersection of social work and management. In this episode, I aim to provide valuable insights and fresh perspectives, encouraging you to develop higher education didactics for social work management. I believe that an exchange of ideas and the sharing of knowledge are essential for achieving quality development in the field of social work and for preparing students to meet the so-called "Global Challenges". Whether you are a social work educator, practitioner, or student, this podcast is for you. Join us as we dive deeper into this important topic and explore how to create a more effective and inclusive approach to social work management education.Today, I will first discuss a specific plant and case: the German Social Economy. This is just one specific cultural and historical form of the voluntary sector. This will help us to understand the requirements for future social work managers in this field. We need to think not only about the plant but also about the greenhouse where plants can grow. The greenhouses are the living laboratories, such as our Higher Education Institutions, that offer boundless opportunities for discovery, innovation, and sustainability. When it comes to educating the next generation of social work managers, we must remember that it's a collaborative effort that requires a multi- and transdisciplinary approach.References:Arnold, M. Everywhere, where you live included, has a patchwork of organisations of different sizes who are doing business and making things happen in a way that is not solely about the generation of profit, but about serving a larger social purpose. They might be called social enterprises, or socially-trading organisations, or all sorts of other things.   Today's episode asks what if they got together and designed how better they might join up and work in a more connected way? What if they offered peer to peer support between each other? What if the Mayor of the city got behind this new network, and saw it as an opportunity to invest and support the emergence of a new economy? What if that investment was then, as each enterprise found its feet and generated surpluses, reinvested back on a pay-it-forward basis to help other emerging enterprises? And what if this skilful support for a new economy spread and spread and became the default model for how to regenerate the economies of towns and cities across the land?   Sounds good doesn't it? Well stand by. You're about to hear a story of how this is actually happening, one you won't have read about in the papers or seen on TV, but it's very much a reality. I am joined by two amazing guests who have played an active role in making this happen.   Danielle Cohen joined Power to Change, the independent trust that supports community businesses in England, in 2018. She works in cities and regions to enable the community business sector to flourish as part of the local economy. Her work has included partnering on the development of Kindred, a social investment vehicle owned and led by the social economy in Liverpool City Region, backed by the city region's Combined Authority and Power to Change. Before joining Power to Change, Danielle worked in urban regeneration, community engagement and corporate responsibility, including as deputy CEO of a central London BID. She believes passionately in building a regenerative economy which nurtures people and planet.   Erika Rushton has 35 years of experience in supporting and investing in communities and creative enterprises to create, grow, occupy and reinvent their own economies. She has worked with homes, workplaces, towns, whole cities, industry sectors and communities of interest at a regional, national and international level.   She is the Director of Creative Economist whose current contracts include Islington Mill Arts Club to deliver The Other City – an Artist led £7 million redevelopment of heritage and modern buildings accommodating 150+ creative enterprises; Women In Space a network of 25+ creative women from across the UK who have taken over unwanted land and buildings, creating value and giving places new purpose; and Kindred, which you'll hear more about shortly.  She mentors creative women leaders nationally and internationally; lectures internationally; and works voluntarily to address intersectional gender discrimination in the UK.   Please consider supporting the podcast by visiting www.patreon.com/fromwhatiftowhatnext and becoming a patron.

The purpose of credit unions is obvious, isn't it? Well, isn't it?One of the perceptions about credit unions is that they ‘alleviate poverty' and I guess many within the Irish & UK credit union movement will accept that perception. I suspect that banks are not perceived as alleviating poverty, by the general public or even bank workers. So, do credit unions alleviate poverty?I spoke to three well known experienced credit union people; Paul Jones, Eileen Halligan & Des Morrisey and put this question to them. I started with Dr Paul A. Jones, Director of Research at CFCFE, who is also Reader in the Social Economy at Liverpool John Moores University, where he heads up the Research Unit for Financial Inclusion. I then spoke with Eileen Halligan, CEO & Secretary at Central Liverpool Credit Union.  A well established credit union with over 16,000 members with three branches. Finally, I got the views of Des Morrisey, the former, CEO of Tallaght Credit Union in Ireland. A 35 year old credit union with 17, 000 members, with over EU65m in assets.

Data & Society and Stanford PACS host a special book launch: One of the most far-reaching transformations in our era is the wave of digital technologies rolling over—and upending—nearly every aspect of life. Work and leisure, family and friendship, community and citizenship have all been modified by now-ubiquitous digital tools and platforms. Digital Technology and Democratic Theory looks closely at one significant facet of our rapidly evolving digital lives: how technology is radically changing our lives as citizens and participants in democratic governments. To understand these transformations, this book brings together contributions by scholars from multiple disciplines to wrestle with the question of how digital technologies shape, reshape, and affect fundamental questions about democracy and democratic theory. As expectations have whiplashed—from Twitter optimism in the wake of the Arab Spring to Facebook pessimism in the wake of the 2016 US election—the time is ripe for a more sober and long-term assessment. How should we take stock of digital technologies and their promise and peril for reshaping democratic societies and institutions? To answer, this volume broaches the most pressing technological changes and issues facing democracy as a philosophy and an institution.Speaker BiosRobyn Caplan | @robyncaplanRobyn Caplan is a Researcher at Data & Society, and a PhD Candidate at Rutgers University (ABD, advisor Philip M. In the first two decades of the 21st century, with new risks and opportunities arising owing to the twin digital and green transformations there is an emerging debate, rethinking economic growth theories with more focus on inclusion and combatting inequality, and exploring the relevance of traditional welfare state models. This debate has intensified in the wake of the 2008 crisis, and now also as a result of the coronavirus pandemic and crisis. The social economy can play a central role in this context. https://www.europarl.europa.eu/thinktank/en/document.html?reference=EPRS_BRI(2020)659336 https://youtu.be/yOSmw0F_DbE Source: © European Union - EP

This is why this years budget doesn't support all facets of our society. Feminism is stuck, we operate under male values but still complain about it. We need to be radical in fighting for equality, and the society we want, not sitting on the side-lines as our future is decided for us. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

He also won the EAEPE-Kapp Prize 2017 for “Marketising the commons in Africa: the case of Ghana” Review of Social Economy 74 (4), 390-419. He has recently published Reconstructing Urban Economics: Towards a Political Economy of the Built Environment (Zed Books, 2016) The shift of world populations into cities and the increasing concentration of activities in urban areas have generated new debates about cities as well as rejuvenating old debates, turning them into global concerns. The economics of cities and regions has, therefore, attained a particularly important status in the twenty-first century. Yet many writers on urban economic issues have never formally studied the subject. Many are mainstream economists who apply their general (equilibrium) economics to cities, but most of them have very little appreciation of the political economy of cities and much less understanding of the built environment, its history, complexities, and peculiarities. The result is the rise of a highly mathematical, mystical urban economics abstracted from critical political, institutional, and social processes at a time when real-world urban economics is urgently needed. This book seeks to offer a corrective to this state of affairs, and to generate further interest in critical real-world urban economics. Through the analysis, exposition, and critique of the urban world in which we live, the book shows fundamental contradictions in the wisdom that more mainstream urban economists have offered over the years. It offers clear alternatives that show that another urban world is possible. Carlo D'Ippoliti is associate professor of political economy at Sapienza University of Rome, and editor of the open access economics journals PSL Quarterly Review and Moneta e Credito. In this interview, Carlo D’Ippoliti and Andrea Bernardi interview Franklin Obeng-Odoom who teaches urban economics and political economy in the School of Built Environment at the University of Technology, Sydney. In 2016, Dr Obeng-Odoom won the Patrick Welch Prize awarded by the Association for Social Economics. Carlo D’Ippoliti is associate professor of political economy at Sapienza University of Rome, and editor of the open access economics journals PSL Quarterly Review and Moneta e Credito. Happy Monday, Radicals! This morning I want to share a few experiences I'm grateful for and use it as an opportunity to encourage you as you begin your week. I've been tremendously blessed over the past weeks by many friends and family members who have volunteered their time and talents to help me in my time of need. I'll never be able to repay them.  And yet, if an opportunity arises, I will work to repay them because I now have social debt. And, I'll be happy to work to repay them. In today's show I share with you some simple thoughts around the social giving economy and some encouragement for you to focus on being a "Go-Giver" towards others. It's a character trait that may help you tremendously in your time of need. Enjoy! Joshua Support Radical Personal Finance on Patreon! http://radicalpersonalfinance.com/patron

On this weeks program we start off discussing The Age article on safety concerns about on-street parking and Dr Cameron Munros findings on top risks to riders. Chris interviews Associate Professor Simon Batterbury about his experience and research on community bike workshops and his upcoming talk at Melbourne Uni where Simon explores community bike workshops that provide an 'urban commons' where people learn to fix up a working bicycle, and source their own parts and tools. Workshops operate on the ‘demand’ rather than ‘supply’ side of sustainable transport, creating skills and a bike culture, not infrastructure.  Talk details: 1pm–2pm, Tuesday 18 Aug 2015, Theatre 2, Basement, School of Geography, 221 Bouverie Street, Carlton. Local news includes the upcoming Melbourne Brompton Urban Challenge in October.

What exactly is the new “social economy,” how did it come about, and what are its implications for nonprofit management? In this audio lecture, philanthropy, policy, and technology researchers Lucy Bernholz and Rob Reich explore some possible answers to these questions. Evaluating the changes that the social economy has created, Bernholz and Reich focus on new options that are available for both doers and donors. Speaking at Stanford Social Innovation Review’s Nonprofit Management Institute, the two analyze the impact that this new economy is having on nonprofit management and how social leaders can adapt. https://ssir.org/podcasts/entry/new_skills_for_the_new_social_economy

Over 70 percent of companies are using social technologies in some way, however very few come anywhere close to achieving the full potential benefit. In a few short years, social technologies have given social interactions the speed and scale of the Internet. Whether discussing consumer products, or organizing political movements, people around the world are constantly using social media platforms to both seek and share information. Companies are using social technologies to reach consumers in new ways too; by tapping into these conversations, organizations can generate richer insights and create precisely targeted messages and offers. While 72 percent of companies are using social technologies in some way, very few are anywhere near achieving the full potential benefit. In fact, the most powerful applications of social technologies in the global economy are largely untapped. While companies will continue to develop ways to use social technologies to reach consumers and B2B customers to gather insights for product development, marketing and customer service purposes, we find that twice as much value potential lies in using social tools to enhance communications, knowledge sharing, and collaboration within and across enterprises. According to MGI estimates, by fully implementing social technologies, companies have the opportunity to raise productivity of 'interaction workers' (high-skill knowledge workers including managers and professionals) by 20 to 25 percent. By looking into how social technologies are being used today and how they are likely to evolve in the coming years in five sectors of the economy (four commercial sectors and the nonprofit sector) we have identified eight value-creating 'levers' that are used across the value chain, from product development through after-sale customer service. Overall, we estimate that between $900 billion and $1.3 trillion in value can be unlocked through the use of social technologies in the commercial sectors we examined. This level of value creation could have transformative impact across sectors and economies. But capturing this value will be a challenge for enterprises - for organizational and cultural reasons, rather than technical ones. Since 'social' is a feature that can be added to virtually any IT-enabled human interaction, the technical challenge is relatively light. But the organizational challenges are significant. For social technologies to deliver their potential economic benefits, enterprises must be open to information sharing and create cultures of trust and cooperation. They must also deal with significant risks to confidentiality, intellectual property, and reputation. Policy makers are confronted with similar challenges to ensure that personal and property rights are protected in online communities. On balance, we believe that the benefits are so compelling that business leaders, policy makers, and individuals will find ways to meet these challenges.
