Shoot us a Text.Today, we talk about the massive $1.34 Billion acquisition of The Herb Chambers Companies by Asbury Automotive. Plus, there still could be a path forward for Honda and Nissan's merger, and Amazon is not doing well in the physical retail space.Show Notes with links:One of the biggest dealership acquisitions in U.S. auto retail history is on the horizon as Asbury Automotive Group signs a definitive agreement to acquire The Herb Chambers Companies. This $1.34 billion deal includes 33 dealerships, 52 franchises, and three collision centers, adding to Asbury's nationwide footprint. The acquisition represents $2.9 billion in revenue in 2024, making it one of the most significant transactions in the industry.Herb Chambers will retain ownership of Mercedes-Benz of Boston but will step into a Special Advisor role at Asbury. The deal is expected to close late in Q2 2025, pending customary approvals.Asbury's CEO David Hult praised the move, saying, “Herb is an icon in Boston, and he has built a world-class organization.”Herb Chambers reflected on the sale: “As I look back on the last 40 years in business, I do so with immense pride, and as I look forward, I will do so with great satisfaction knowing what we built together will be in trusted hands,”The possibility of Honda and Nissan merging to form the world's fourth-largest automaker is back on the table—but with one major condition: Nissan CEO Makoto Uchida must step down, according to the Financial Times.Talks to create a $60 billion company collapsed last week, deepening Nissan's struggles amid hybrid shortages and Chinese competition.Renault and Nissan's board are reportedly pushing Uchida to exit, with informal discussions on his departure already underway.Honda CEO Toshihiro Mibe has ruled out a hostile takeover but is open to renewed negotiations under new Nissan leadership.Mitsubishi shares jumped 8.6% on the news, as a Honda-Nissan deal would stabilize its position, reducing its dependence on Nissan.Analyst Tatsuo Yoshida sees a potential Honda-Nissan partnership as a win-win, but warns that Nissan must first “get its act together.”Despite its dominance in e-commerce, Amazon continues to stumble in physical retail, as detailed in a Wall Street Journal report. From Amazon Go to Amazon Style, the company has repeatedly failed to make stores work, raising questions about its brick-and-mortar strategy.Amazon Go now has just 16 stores, after cutting half its locations since 2023.Amazon Books, Amazon 4-Star, and Amazon Style all shut down within the past three years."Just Walk Out" tech was removed from Amazon Fresh stores in April 2024, as customers preferred Dash Cart smart shopping carts instead.Critics argue Amazon “doesn't understand retail,” with poor store design and a lack of clear purpose in past concepts.Whole Foods remains its one success story, with Amazon making price cHosts: Paul J Daly and Kyle MountsierGet the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email

This week we dig into Amazon's physical store strategy as it ups the ante with the expansion of its mainstream grocery store concept (Amazon Fresh), convenience stores (Amazon Go), and an initial foray into brick-and-mortar apparel (Amazon Style). We ponder why Whole Foods has gotten worse under their leadership and whether the company's tendency to see most everything as an engineering problem keeps them from delivering the emotional content and artistic side of retail they will need to succeed in the future. We get Steve's full report on his store visits and reprise how important it is to understand "buying" vs. "shopping."But first we open up with the retail news that caught our attention this week, including lots of scary macro-economic news. We also discuss the dire surprise warnings from Walmart and Best Buy, as well as a dismal earnings report from Shopify. Then we try to unpack Amazon's earnings, which we found less than stellar, despite Wall Street's ebullience. ********************************************************We look forward to seeing everyone at Grocery ShopTwo of Steve's Forbes articles on this week's topicAmazon's Future May Soon Be Tied to Brick-and-MortarHere's Why Amazon Should Buy Kohl'sJohn Oliver "This Week Tonight" Episode on InflationAmazon Fresh's Latest StoreInside The First Amazon Style Store About UsSteve Dennis is an advisor, keynote speaker and author on strategic growth and business innovation. The 30,000-square-foot retail space features fitting rooms where the Amazon Style algorithm will deposit suggested pieces for shoppers to try on.
Amazon has opened its first brick-and-mortar CLOTHING store. It's called Amazon Style...and is located in Glendale. Matt...so tell us about the store? For more, KCBS Radio news anchor Megan Goldsby spoke with Bloomberg tech reporter Matt Day.
Continued from Part 1… Amazon unseated Walmart as the largest clothing seller last year during the pandemic as more people began shopping online. Wells Fargo estimated in March that Amazon's clothing and footwear sales in the U.S. increased by about 15% in 2020 to more than $41 billion (¥4.6 trillion). That's about 20% to 25% above Walmart's sales and an 11% to 12% share of all clothing sold in the U.S. Amazon has been making a big push into fashion in recent years through its own labels. In September 2020, it launched an online shop called Luxury Stores. Shoppers at the Amazon Style store can browse items on display and scan a QR code to see sizes, colors and customer ratings. Shoppers can send items to fitting rooms or directly to the store's counter. Once in a fitting room, customers can request other items using a touchscreen. “Amazon Style completely reimagines what's possible in the fitting room, turning it into a personalized space where customers can continue to shop a seemingly endless closet of great styles,” Vasen wrote in an Amazon blog post. Neil Saunders, managing director of GlobalData Retail, said the prototype store could deepen Amazon's influence in the sector, especially among clothing shoppers who prefer the experience of exploring and browsing physical stores. And it could empower Amazon with more shopping data. But he also cautioned that Amazon's success depends on execution. “Traditionally, it is not all that good at creating a great in-store experience,” said Saunders. “It tends to be very solid at technology and operations but can fall short on spirit and soul — both of which are particularly important in fashion, where consumers love inspiration, curation and personal services.” (AP) This article was provided by The Japan Times Alpha.
First, Amazon competed with malls. Now, it's moving inside one. The online retailing giant said that it plans to open a clothing store in a Southern California mall later this year. It's the latest foray into brick-and-mortar stores for Amazon, which already sells more than 10% of all clothes in the U.S. The store, which will sell women's and men's clothing as well as shoes and other accessories, will open at Americana at Brand, a mall in Glendale, California. The entry into malls could become another threat to traditional clothing sellers because of the data and shopper insights Amazon may gain, experts say. Amazon says its algorithms will spit out real-time recommendations as shoppers scan items that they see. Shoppers can also fill out an online survey of their preferences for style and fit. The store will be about 2,800 square meters, about one-third the size of a large department store like Macy's. However, it will offer more than double the number of styles as traditional stores do because only one of each piece of clothing will be on display, with the rest in a backroom. Items are chosen by Amazon curators who also use feedback provided by millions of customers shopping on Amazon.com. Simoina Vasen, managing director of Amazon Style, declined to comment on rollout plans of the new store or sales projections. Amazon didn't give a precise date for the opening of the Glendale store. (AP) To be continued… This article was provided by The Japan Times Alpha.

Amazon Style opening in Los Angles is a bold move from the world's largest clothing retailer. However, it appears they are taking a page out of Canada Goose's book. Dave Young: Welcome to the Empire Builders Podcast, teaching business owners the not-so-secret techniques that took famous businesses from mom and pop to major brands. Stephen Semple is a marketing consultant, story collector and storyteller. I'm Stephen's sidekick and business partner, Dave Young. Before we get into today's episode, a word from our sponsor, which is, well it's us, but we're highlighting ads we've written and produced for our clients. So here's one of those. [Rheo Thompson Ad] Dave Young: Welcome to another episode of the Empire Builders podcast. You wanted to talk about Amazon today. What is their left to say about Amazon? Stephen Semple: Amazon, once again, is doing something that you need to be aware of. But there are a couple of other little interesting sidebars in this Amazon story. So, about a year ago, before we actually started this podcast, I had created a YouTube video and we'll have a link to this YouTube video talking about some trends that we saw coming into the pandemic. So pre-pandemic, we saw online retailing cross the magic 15% of all retail transactions in December, pre-pandemic. Now, the reason why that's important is, there's this whole idea of the diffusion of innovation and how things grow. And basically, the amount of time it takes from something go from zero to 15% is the amount of time it takes to go from 15% to 80%. So that's kind of when things explode. And we have seen this continued explosion of online retailing. Stephen Semple: And that has been a cautionary thing we've been sharing with clients, "Look, you've just got to be aware of this." But here's the interesting thing. One of the areas that lagged, that was not at that mark, was clothing. 15% of all clothing retailing is now done online. 2002, Amazon started selling clothing online and Amazon is now the largest retailer of clothing in North America. They just recently past Walmart. That's big news and they are a forced to be reckoned with. So, if you're Amazon and you're looking at the online clothing business, and you're wanting to create a better experience, who do you think you'd look out at? We've talked about this before. Dave, who is the second fastest-growing luxury brand in the world? We've talked about them before. Check out the Canada Goose Episode here! Dave Young: I didn't know there was going to be a quiz. I would've studied. Are we talking about Canada Goose? Stephen Semple: We're talking about Canada Goose, back in episode 12. Dave Young: Okay. Stephen Semple: So if you are running the clothing area for Amazon, you'd look at them, right? Dave Young: Oh yeah, of course. Stephen Semple: And if they'd been listening to our podcast, what would they do? They would say, "Look, there's probably a way to marry online and brick and mortar, right?" Dave Young: And maybe find some people that have done it. Stephen Semple: And find some people that have done it. And boy, oh boy. The one with a really fast luxury brand, that's who you'd look at, right? Well, guess what Amazon announced. Amazon announced on Thursday and we're recording this on January 24th, they announced on Thursday the past week that they are going to be opening a brick and mortar store in California. They're going to be opening a 30,000 square foot store right next to Nordstrom and Urban Outfitters and J.Crew. Dave Young: That's sizable. Stephen Semple: That's sizeable. And what are they going to be doing? On display is only going to be one size, one outfit, one color, sounds kind of familiar, doesn't it? Dave Young: Stay tuned. We're going to wrap up this story and tell you how to apply this lesson to your business right after this. [Empire Builders Ad] Dave Young:
