Join us as she shares what exactly art therapy is and how it can help your child with ADHD or other mental disabilities.   We discuss what art therapy consists of and how it can be more beneficial than traditional talk therapy, how art therapy differs from play therapy, ways it can calm the nervous system, and much more. We also dive into what ages are appropriate to start art therapy as well as how you can find an art therapist near you.   Art therapy allows kids the medium to express pent up emotion without having to say anything. Like the old saying goes, “A picture is worth a thousand words”, and Kayla reassures us that this definitely applies to our children who sometimes have trouble truly expressing what they feel. For those parents who have been curious to find another approach, this is one episode you won't want to miss!      Key Takeaways: [3:50] What art therapy is and how it's more beneficial than traditional talk therapy [5:43] Differences between play therapy and art therapy [10:13] What is the appropriate age to start art therapy and how it benefits kids with ADHD or other mental disabilities [15:56] Ways art therapy can calm the nervous system [23:56] How to find an art therapist near you [26:32] Why Kayla decided to pursue art therapy     How To Connect With Kayla: IG: @Kaylahelenske Facebook: Kayla Helenske website: https://kaylahelenske.com/     Memorable Quotes: “What I love about art therapy is that it actually breaks down any verbal barriers and becomes its own sort of language. So we use lines, shapes, and colors to really describe how we're feeling. And I find it to be one of the most effective ways to help kids express their emotions.” “Art therapy is actually an integrative mental health profession; it combines the knowledge and understanding of human development, psychological theories and techniques, and we combine that all in metaphors and the creative process.” “One thing about art, you can actually move it out of you and visually look at it. I can draw or paint a picture of all the things I'm holding inside.” “Instead of just talking about it and asking a kid, ‘Why did you do that?', we have the ability to break it down into pieces visually and actually start to see patterns that are coming up for them.” “In the way that I work I do intertwine meditation, mindfulness, breathing techniques, all those calming skill sets that intertwine so beautifully together to give it a whole holistic approach.” “An art therapist is specifically trained to use art materials as part of the therapeutic process. And so they know the risks, the benefits of using each material, and have spent thousands of hours working under supervision to learn this process.” “You can go to the American Art Therapy Association, it's a website, and you can look up different registered therapists near you.”     Dana Kay Resources:    Website - https://adhdthriveinstitute.com/ Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/adhdthriveinstitute  Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/adhdthriveinstitute/  YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/c/ADHDThriveInstitute  LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/company/74302454/  Pinterest - https://www.pinterest.com/adhdthriveinstitute/ Tiktok - https://www.tiktok.com/@adhd_thriveinstitute     International Best Selling Book, Thriving with ADHD - https://adhdthriveinstitute.com/book/    Free Reduce ADHD Symptoms Naturally Masterclass - https://adhdthrivemethod.com/masterclass-rego-page     ADHD Parenting Course - https://adhdthrivemethod.com/adhd-thrive-jump-start-parenting-4-adhd    ADHD Thrive Method 4 Kids Program - https://adhdthriveinstitute.com/packages/

She spent her professional career as Director of Art Therapy at a Children’s Psychiatric and Pediatric Medical Center. She went on to teach at the Graduate Institute of Expressive Therapy in Cambridge, MA. She met her husband while serving on the Board of the American Art Therapy Association. (He was their outside counsel.) Karen spent most of her life suffering from severe and frequent Migraine headaches and spent almost 50 years searching for cures and learning how to not only advocate for herself but to try to make lemonade out of a horrible disease. She found a creative way to make the suffering have meaning: Her dissertation was written about the Alchemy of turning Migraines into gold, and becoming a “wounded healer.”  This experience prepared her for the cancer diagnosis she got at age 70. She has found several art forms to express this journey, and has much to share about self advocacy. She continues to live on the houseboat with her husband and occasional visits from their two grown boys. This week in Episode 42 of Sage Aging we explored the use of Expressive Arts Therapy with older adults.  My GuestCaitlin Pilette is the Expressive Arts Coordinator at an assisted living and memory care facility in Cambridge, Massachusetts, as well as a per diem clinician for a family bereavement nonprofit organization in Arlington. She holds a BS in psychology, a BA in dance, a certification in dance medicine, and an MA in clinical mental health counseling with a specialization in dance movement therapy. She first started working in elder care running dance groups with individuals with Parkinson's disease. And through that and other programs discovered her love for working with older adults. Caitlin has the arts in her blood and is happy to have a career that allows her to benefit others using her passion. Voices From the Expressive Therapies Summit Episode 1 I have been asking Barry to be a guest on the show to talk about the Expressive Therapies Summit before I even had any podcasting equipment in 2019. The idea for TCP had been brewing for several years before I began taking the necessary action steps to bring it to life. I learned that Barry, similarly had the idea for the Summit percolating within him for decades before the opportunity to breathe life into it was ripe. Barry M. Cohen, MA, ATR-BC began his career in the helping professions as a Child Life Specialist at Yale/New Haven Hospital in 1979. In 1982, while Director of Expressive Therapies at Mount Vernon Hospital, Alexandria, VA, he developed the Diagnostic Drawing Series (DDS), a standardized art assessment and award-winning multicenter research project, still in use worldwide. Cohen is the author/co-author of numerous journal article sand chapters, and co-authored/co-edited three books, including Telling Without Talking: Art as a Window into the World of Multiple Personality, and the workbook, Managing Traumatic Stress through Art, both published in 1995. He has taught extensively in the United States, Canada, and the Netherlands. A professional conference planner and consumer fair promoter, he produced and chaired the Eastern Regional Conference on Trauma and Dissociation (1989-1996) and was Conference Manager of the American Art Therapy Association's 2006 and 2007 conferences. Barry joined Expressive Media as Executive Director in 2008, and introduced its Institute of the Arts in Healing Spring Institute in 2009, then founded the annual Expressive Therapies Summit in 2010. In 2013, with Eliana Gil, he co-founded the Mid-Atlantic Play Therapy Training Institute, an annual conference held just outside Washington, DC. Our Breaking Distance Team sat down with Art Therapist Dawn Ippoliti LCAT, ATR-BC for Mental Health Awareness Month. We had an opportunity to delve into her practice as an art therapist and speak about mental health issues people are dealing with, particularly in regards to quarantine and the lock-down. Dawn is a licensed, board certified, art therapist and registered with the American Art Therapy Association. For almost twenty years Dawn has worked in a variety of clinical settings and institutions both in California and New York, providing art therapy and mental health services to children and families in crisis. Currently, she works as the program supervisor for New York University Art Therapy in the Schools Program providing supervision and trainings to school art therapists and their graduate level interns. https://www.art-therapy.com/     More About Art Therapy and Dawn’s ApproachArt therapy is a unique form of therapy that integrates the creative process for emotional health and healing. Many of the people I see are looking for alternatives to traditional talk therapy. Using art can be extremely beneficial to the therapeutic process as it can help illuminate your internal world. When you engage in discussion and the creative process together, both the left and right hemispheres of the brain are stimulated promoting the whole brain to function simultaneously. Our focus is more about the process of creating and finding a place you feel safe to freely explore. However creating art is always your choice and if you prefer verbal means of expression, I will always welcome the direction you choose.I offer a supportive and nurturing environment with practical feedback to help my clients effectively address the challenges they face. While we can't change difficult situations of the past, we can work together to better understand and resolve behaviors or negative perceptions that may be holding you back from experiencing a more fulfilling and meaningful life.  I know it is a difficult decision to start therapy and often times people can even feel conflicted about whether or not they are ready, or the time is right. I acknowledge your courage for beginning the process and taking action to move in a new direction. I look forward to working with you to achieve your goals.ARTICLES AND RESOURCESCOVID Crisis and Mental Health:https://www.nimh.nih.gov/news/science-news/2020/supporting-mental-health-during-the-covid-19-pandemic.shtmlhttps://www.psychiatry.org/psychiatrists/covid-19-coronavirushttps://www.sciencemag.org/careers/2020/05/professors-must-support-mental-health-trainees-during-covid-19-crisishttps://www.washingtonpost.com/health/2020/05/04/mental-health-coronavirus/https://www.forbes.com/sites/sap/2020/05/19/the-other-covid-19-crisis-declining-mental-health/#39f354ab3d65https://www.mountsinai.org/care/behavioral-health https://jewishboard.org/ https://med.nyu.edu/departments-institutes/child-adolescent-psychiatry/clinical-services  https://www1.nyc.gov/site/doh/health/health-topics/crisis-emergency-services-mobile-crisis-teams.page    CRISIS SUPPORT: To request a mobile crisis team in NYC, call NYC Well at (888) NYC-WELL (888-692-9355  https://suicidepreventionlifeline.org/1-800-273-8255 Text HOME to 741741 for free, 24/7 crisis counselinghttps://www.crisistextline.org/topics/suicide/?msclkid=0a3213d1a8ca1fa199234d1c6f9dbe41#how-to-get-help-if-youre-thinking-about-ending-your-life-1   National Domestic Violence Hotline  1-800-799-SAFE (7233), or 1-800-787-3224 (TTY).  https://www.thehotline.org/help/  Other helpful resources for parents and young people:  You can find similar guidelines in English, Spanish, Chinese, Amharic, Korean, French, and Vietnamese at https://www.nasponline.org/resources-and-publications/resources-and-podcasts/school-climate-safety-and-crisis/health-crisis-resources/talking-to-children-about-covid-19-(coronavirus)-a-parent-resource    Talking with Children: Tips for Caregivers, Parents, and Teachers During Infectious Disease Outbreaks: https://store.samhsa.gov/system/files/pep20-01-01-006_508_0.pdf How to Talk to Teens About the New Coronavirus:    https://www.health.harvard.edu/blog/how-to-talk-to-teens-about-the-new-coronavirus-2020031419192   Talking to Kids and Teens About Coronavirus (by age-group):  https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/smart-parenting-smarter-kids/202003/how-talk-kids-and-teens-about-the-coronavirus  Stress and Coping: https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/prepare/managing-stress-anxiety.html   Caring for Children in a Disaster: https://www.cdc.gov/childrenindisasters/helping-children-cope.html  Supporting Kids and Teens through the Pandemic:   https://www.mghclaycenter.org/hot-topics/7-ways-to-support-kids-and-teens-through-the-coronavirus-pandemic/  How Teenagers Can Protect Their Mental Health During Coronavirus:  https://www.unicef.org/coronavirus/how-teenagers-can-protect-their-mental-health-during-coronavirus-covid-19              LEARN MORE ABOUT OUR ANTI-TRAFFICKING ORGANIZATION BEAUTY FOR FREEDOM AT:    https://beautyforfreedom.org/       BEAUTY FOR FREEDOM MISSION STATEMENT      Art Therapy.
