Andrew Furey has been the premier of Newfoundland and Labrador for an extraordinarily eventful five years, from the pandemic and its fallout to going all in on oil and gas, and lately, of course, the chaos of Trump and a trade war. The popular leader shocked everyone recently when he announced he's leaving politics. Host Amanda Lang talks to Furey about why he's stepping down, his fears about the U.S. president's motives and the need for a Canada-first strategy.

It's the furthest south the Canadian navy has ever gone. And CBC's international climate correspondent Susan Ormiston is on board. Contenders for the federal Liberal leadership are still in Montreal… this time for the English language debate. Yesterday's French debate highlighted who was more comfortable in the language, and candidates spent more time targeting U.S. president Donald Trump than directly attacking each other. It's been considered eliminated in Canada since 1998, but cases of measles still surface every year – mostly connected to international travel. This year, there have already been about 80 cases detected in this country, causing some concern in public health circles about dipping vaccination rates. Plus: Newfoundland premier Andrew Furey steps down, access to primary care, Canadian officials in Washington promoting Canada, Alberta minister steps down over health procurement, measles spike, and more.

Canada is a resource rich powerhouse that has all the energy and critical minerals necessary for a prosperous future. Has Canada given up on the grand bargain between climate and energy?  With mounting division over carbon pricing and a potential reset on energy policy, join the Empire Club of Canada for a national perspective on the energy “trilemma” of sustainability, affordability and reliability. Is Canada ready to take advantage of the increasing importance of critical minerals to the global economy and what it means for powering the emissions reduction, sustainability and global supply chains?   This event will ask whether it is possible to increase interprovincial cooperation in order to balance regional interests and create a unified approach to position Canada as a responsible and reliable resource partner. The world is changing rapidly. Escalating conflicts in energy-producing regions of the world marked 2024, while America is preparing for a new Presidential administration. How does this impact Canada's role in providing energy security and independence? What role will Canadian energy and critical minerals play under the new Trump administration? Join us on December 17th as Empire Club of Canada presents the fourth event in our Fall Energy Series  — a national discussion on energy and critical minerals. This is an event you won't want to miss, featuring Premier Danielle Smith of Alberta and Premier Andrew Furey of Newfoundland and Labrador. With their distinct regional and political perspectives, they will offer valuable insights into Canada's energy future. Both Premiers will lay out their vision and sit down to a moderated discussion where they discuss their common ground. You, merry band of insight seekers. If you recall last week's pod, we took up political residence in British Columbia. This week, we're heading in the opposite direction. As far east as you can go in this country, with a very notable guest: The Honourable Andrew Furey, 14th Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador. First sworn in in August 2020, and then the winner of a majority government in March 2021, Dr. Furey is an orthopaedic, trauma surgeon and educator with Memorial University's School of Medicine. His education includes a Diploma in Organizational Leadership from Oxford. In 2010, he helped create the Newfoundland and Labrador-born charity, “Team Broken Earth” which has provided relief and participated in medical missions in Haiti, as well as Bangladesh, Ethiopia, Guatemala and Nicaragua. And, in 2017, he was named the Canadian Red Cross' Humanitarian of the Year for Newfoundland and Labrador. So … just another one of those run of the mill CVs that fly across your desk every day, Herle Burly-ites.Today on the pod, we'll dive a little deeper in Premier Furey's background, and also chat about:Energy, wind, hydro, our climate future, and Newfoundland's prospects for being a green hydrogen producer.Premier Furey is at the table in these Health care negotiations. He's talked about the need for reform. What does he mean by that, exactly? And what's his take on Premier Ford's approach?Given that Newfoundland has the highest percentage of vaccinations among the provinces, what are his cultural observations about COVID? Both what we've come through and where we go from here. And finally, as the only remaining Liberal Provincial Premier, along with Yukon Territory, we'll get his take on the future of large L Liberals across Canada, federally and provincially.Thank you for joining us on #TheHerleBurly podcast. A Canada-Germany Hydrogen Scandal?

Decouple

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 21, 2022 86:44

James Fleay, an Australian engineer and project manager in the energy sector, joins Dr. Keefer to discuss the "Hydrogen Alliance" proposed between Canada and Germany. This Hydrogen Alliance is coming under increasing scrutiny due to allegations of a conflict of interest arising out of the Premier of Newfoundland, Andrew Furey's luxury trip to a lodge owned by Canadian billionaire John Risley this summer. Risley happens to be one of the principal investors in a project called Nujio'qonik, one of three projects competing to be part of the Canada German Hydrogen Alliance alongside EverWind Fuels in Nova Scotia and the Port of Belledune project in New Brunswick. Beyond a potential political scandal lies a very real energy scandal. Fleay describes the chemistry, thermodynamics, and economics required to turn electrons generated by wind turbines in Canada into ammonia to be shipped across the Atlantic to be burned in German Power plants, a process which he describes as being "The least efficient way to get electrons on the German grid imaginable." Decouple takes a look at who will foot the bill and who will profit. The total output of the Canada German Hydrogen Alliance which requires a near doubling of Canada's total national wind fleet, expensive electrolysis equipment, ammonia production through the energy intensive Haber Bosch process, large scale shipping and potential energy hungry reconversion to hydrogen for burning as fuel in German thermal plants is almost equal to the output of a single German nuclear station, ISAR 2, one of the three remaining nuclear plants still under threat of closure in Germany. With the myth of cheap Canadian exportable hydrogen as a tool to replace Russian natural gas busted we examine Canada's only truly green and ultra low carbon energy export: its nuclear technology and uranium which is already used in near carbon free power plants domestically and around the world offsetting a full 1/3 of Canada's total all sector emissions. Hang onto your hats. This is an interesting one.

Sheina Lerman has moved around a lot in life, but never has she wanted to live in a big city. After moving to Newfoundland some years ago, during the pandemic, she decided to settle in Deer Lake, a town of 5,000 people—perhaps none of them Jews. She found a nice house across from a sandy beach. Life, for the most part, is quiet. Except when it isn't. Like in 2021, when she decided to stand for the provincial New Democratic Party in the Liberal stronghold that was home to former premier Dwight Ball, who handed it over to his successor, Andrew Furey. Furey won with 2,838 votes; Lerman came in third with 107. But when you're a come-from-away Jew in small-town Newfoundland, you're no stranger to being the odd person out in a crowd. Lerman sits down with Yehupetzville host Ralph Benmergui to chat about why she chose this quaint and coastal life, and why she believes more Jews need to leave urban centres and make their presence known across the country. Credits Yehupetzville is hosted by Ralph Benmergui. Michael Fraiman is the producer and editor. Our music was arranged by Louis Simão and performed by Louis Simão and Jacob Gorzhaltsan.
