Yet as a crucial hearing approaches next month in Russia, the case against Griner remains shrouded in mystery. Little clarity has come from Russian prosecutors since she was detained in February. Only measured public statements have come from the U.S. government as it seeks more information about the circumstances of her detention. An otherwise mundane drug case features storylines of race and gender, professional athletics, geopolitics and international criminal justice. Tennis – Wimbledon bans players from Russia, Belarus over Ukraine war Russian and Belarusian tennis players have been banned from competing at this year’s Wimbledon tournament because of the war in Ukraine. The All England Club’s move makes the grass-court Grand Slam tournament in southwest London the first top-level tennis event to bar players from Russia and Belarus. Among those affected are second-ranked Daniil Medvedev. He won last year’s U.S. Open and was this year’s Australian Open runner-up. He was briefly ranked No. 1 in the world this year. Another player affected is Victoria Azarenka of Belarus. Azarenka is a two-time Australian Open champion and also a former No. 1. NFL – Haskins apparently ran out of gas before being fatally hit Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Dwayne Haskins apparently ran out of gas and was returning to his vehicle when he was fatally struck by a dump truck earlier this month in Florida. The Florida Highway Patrol released a recording Wednesday of a 911 call Haskins’ wife Kalabrya (Gondrezick) made to the agency shortly after the April 9 accident. Calling from Pittsburgh and unaware of the accident, she told the dispatcher that Haskins had called her to say he had run out of gas and would call her back. When the former Ohio State star didn’t and she couldn’t reach him, she called 911. NCAABKB – Big Ten basketball tournaments to make stop in Minneapolis The Big Ten basketball tournaments are coming to Minneapolis. The conference says the women’s tournament will be held at Target Center in 2023 and 2024. The men’s tournament will be played there in 2024. All 14 teams are automatic entrants in both events. Chicago will host the men’s tournament next year to make up for 2021 when the event was shifted to Indianapolis due to COVID-19 restrictions. Minneapolis will be the fifth different host on the men’s side. The women’s tournament will move out of Indianapolis for the first time since 2015. WNBA – 2 months after Griner’s arrest, mystery surrounds her case WNBA All-Star and two-time Olympic gold medalist Brittney Griner is easily the most prominent American citizen known to be jailed by a foreign government. The accident report released Wednesday says witnesses told investigators Haskins was trying to cross the highway when he went into the path of the dump truck. The truck knocked him into the path of a car, which also struck him. The accident report released Wednesday says witnesses told investigators Haskins was trying to cross the highway when he went into the path of the dump truck. The truck knocked him into the path of a car, which also struck him. It's the 100th episode of the Keeping Karlsson Fantasy Hockey Podcast, and we're celebrating like we've been there before, as Elan and Brian forego any major celly and proceed to once again motor on through all of the latest fantasy hockey news and provide the thorough analysis that you need to win your pool. On this 100th go-around, we kick things off with some of the most notable Outjuries of the year happening at a key time, as three elite blue-liners make a return to their respective lineups with fantasy hockey championships on the line.  We also keep an eye on the continued unlikely developments in creases around the league, bouncing from St Louis, to New Jersey, to Long Island, with stops in Calgary and San Jose on the way (granted, a terribly inefficient real-life itinerary). Some unfamiliar names are heating up, including a couple Blues who are the unexpected leaders in team scoring since the start of February. Meanwhile, some very familiar names are cooling off, begging the question of whether it's time to cut bait with star players in Boston, New York and Vancouver, rather than risk running out of room in your semi-finals and finals matchups. We also take a look at a call-up in Anaheim, a very notable outjuried forward in Winnipeg, the sparse bluelines in Ottawa and Tampa, a productive Coyote d-man with initials that aren't OEL, a couple role-playing Oilers who are catching our eye, and injuries and their implications from Tampa, Pittsburgh, Montreal, Ottawa, San Jose and more. And remember: SeatGeek is offering our listeners a $20 rebate off your first ticket purchase! Well, here we are-- the final 2016-17 regular season episode of the Keeping Karlsson Fantasy Hockey Podcast! (Elan wants you to know that, if you're a first time listener, this episode of the show is more lightly edited than usual, so expect a few uncharacteristic fumbles and pauses that normally don't make it to air outside of the live broadcast) Elan and Brian wrap up regular season business by combing the league leaders lists for a whole bunch of categories and coming up with a few interesting stories from the season to hone in on, including the unveiling of a recent 2nd overall pick's true star power down the stretch, the same for a slightly less recent 3rd overall pick, an historic season for a goal-hungry rookie, a debate between two Russian forwards who are good for at least 75 points, a Hurricane who broke the 60 point mark, a few goalies who've made a solid case for changing tiers, and the other underappreciated Bruin. Dobber Hockey's Managing Editor Steve Laidlaw came by to tell us about his 2016-17 fantasy all-stars at every position, and then some. He detailed his methodology for picking his all-stars, and also offered a look into his crystal ball for what this heralded group can offer next year, and how soon/late you should make a move for them in your 2017-18 drafts. Then, in a Keeping Karlsson first, the guys are joined by 6 KKUPFL champions to live-draft an 8 team, 6 player playoff pool. They also share some of their playoff pool drafting strategies later on in the show. And finally, they mourn the final week losses of a handful of teams, while celebrating the victories of a joyously long list of champion listeners. Congrats to everyone who won their pool this year! Oh, and also, join our playoff pool! All you need to do is become a $1 patron of the show, and you'll also get full patron perks along with that $1/month, including access to the famous patrons-only Facebook group!  And last thing-- promise!-- our shows through playoffs and offseason are bi-weekly, so expect your next episode to come in two weeks, right around April 24.  Thank you for listening all season long, and hope to see you in our playoff pool and patrons-only Facebook group! Welcome to another summer series episode of the Keeping Karlsson Fantasy Hockey Podcast! Before we get to the content, you might have heard that our friend Darryl Dobbs (aka Dobber) recently announced that he has been diagnosed with a rare bone marrow disorder. In support, we encourage our listeners to sign up for their national bone marrow registries, or otherwise support bone marrow and blood donor programs. It only takes a few minutes-- Canadian listeners can follow this link to Canadian Blood Services' OneMatch program, and American listeners can head over to Be The Match.  Elan and Brian begin this episode by parsing another offseason blockbuster in Montreal, considering whether the change of scenery will be a boon or bane for Jonathan Drouin, and what the short- and long-term prospects for Mikhail Sergachev look like in Tampa. They also argue over whether Mike Smith can deliver on the hopes thatthe Calgary Flames have for him. They then move on to share a couple quick thoughts on the expansion draft protection lists released today, scratching their heads over the choices of a couple teams in particular. For the rest of the show, the guys pick out some of the most pleasant production surprises of the 2016-17 campaign, and dig in to figure out whether they can do it all over again next year. The discussion includes a Bruin with a knack for scoring, a newly elite centreman in the Pacific, a pair of forwards outdoing Minnesota's scoring reputation, a defenseman who just needs an opportunity, and a goalie returned to stardom in the Metropolitan. Remember, we've got our summer patronage special on from now til September: become a $1 patron of the show, and you'll get the full slate of $5 patron perks, including access to the famous patrons-only Facebook group! On this episode of the Keeping Karlsson Hockey Podcast, we take advantage of a short holiday-mandated lull in action to shed all kinds of light on how Elan and Brian are faring in their Audio Almanac player projections at the near-halfway point of the 2018-19 NHL season. Elan's on vacation, but Brian is joined by Alma-maniac and KKUPFL tracker extraordinare Marcas to revel/wallow in the most/least accurate pre-season player point projections thus far.
