The Tragically Hip Top Forty Countdown: Song 20 — Neil from Arroyo GrandeHey, it's jD, and this week I'm joined by a die-hard hockey fan and Hip convert who hails from California. Meet Neil from Arroyo Grande, the west coast wizard of late-night YouTube rabbit holes and deep-cut reverence.Neil didn't grow up with The Hip in his backyard. He had to find them — through hockey, through Trailer Park Boys, through a fascination with Canadian culture that led him down a road paved with Gretzky, Jericho, and yes… Gord.We talk about getting into the band via Yer Favourites, chasing context across albums and eras, and how discovering The Hip opened the door to new perspectives on art, identity, and memory. He shares what it's like being an American Hip fan (“Wait, they're not on the radio here?”), and how Phantom Power, Man Machine Poem, and some Gordon Edgar Downie solo magic helped him through hard times — and made the music his own. From WWE finishers to vapor trails to songs that hit like Shakespearean tragedy, this one's for the late bloomers, the lyric heads, and anyone who ever found themselves singing along to a song they didn't fully understand… until they really did.
"You don't know Detroit 'til you know Vinewood!" In this deeply-rooted, powerful conversation, Victoria Camille takes us on a journey through generational migration, community transformation, and grassroots organizing. From her granddad “Kid Heney” the boxer at Joe Louis Arena, to growing up in River Rouge and Santa Rosa, to facing the harsh realities of returning to a declining Vinewood, Victoria brings layered Detroit truths: “I thought I saw a ghost—it was Auntie Lulu on my porch.” This Detroit is Different episode spans from field trips in a hippie teacher's van to fighting off street racers with flower beds and block clubs. Victoria shares the real reasons she's running for Police Commissioner in District 7: “We need to move from policing to true community safety.” If you've ever wondered how to turn inherited homes into healing spaces or how to push yourself to the edge like a 400-meter sprint, this one's for you. Earnest ‘EJ' Christian, DJ Minter and Rob The Genius provide commentary on the The Main Event #3 from February 23rd 1990 from Joe Louis Arena in Detroit, Michigan.
John 5’s KISS collection is next level—so much so that he’s opening it up to the public in May for a special museum-style walkthrough in Los Angeles. But don’t expect a little shrine in a basement somewhere. We’re talking full-blown KISS history from 1973 to 1983 when the band was under Bill Aucoin’s management and before they ditched the makeup for Creatures of the Night. “It’s priceless,” John 5 says. “There’s stuff in here that even Gene didn’t know existed because it was made in places like South America, Australia, and Japan.” Oh, and speaking of Gene Simmons—I had to ask: how much would he charge Gene to see his own memorabilia? John laughed. “Oh my God. Gene really enjoys this stuff. There’s so much he’s never seen before.” John 5’s first meeting with Gene Simmons? Not exactly what you’d expect from a die-hard fan. Picture this: a 14-year-old John 5, waiting outside the Pontchartrain Hotel in Detroit, hoping to meet his rock god before a KISS show at Joe Louis Arena. Gene walks past. No autograph. Nothing. “So I jump in the elevator with him,” John says. “I hold out my booklet and marker, hoping for a signature.” The elevator doors open to Gene’s floor. Gene finally looks at him. “You want me to sign that?” And what does young John 5 say? “No, it’s okay.” WHAT?! “I was just so mad that he walked past me,” John laughs. “But yeah, that really happened.” March 19 marks 43 years since we lost Randy Rhoads, and John 5 had nothing but praise for the legendary Ozzy Osbourne guitarist. “Randy was an anomaly. He changed the game. It was like seeing the invention of the microwave or an electric car—something totally different that blew people’s minds.” Randy didn’t just step into Ozzy’s band and carry on the Black Sabbath sound. He redefined it. “That riff in Crazy Train? It’s gonna live forever.” It's always great to get "5" on the show.
Here's my background. Love Bryan Adams. He did "Cuts Like a Knife", one of the great rock tracks of eighties radio. "Straight from the Heart", one of the great ballads of rock radio, and the windows down, summertime, turn it up loud, catch a little buzz, rock and roll of Reckless. His eighties work is the foundation. And then he went into the nineties and worked with Mutt Lange and had a huge album. And then worked on some soundtracks, went ballad-heavy, and then lost his way. Now I saw him live, would have been 1987. The Hooters opened. It was Joe Louis Arena. So it was the, you know, 17,000. Great show. Saw him in Indianapolis - 2007-ish. And it was really good Bryan Adams has always been good live. He has a 2025 tour of Europe planned. Now he has new music. And I've been so disappointed with Bryan Adams music over the past 30 years. Never a great lyricist - he's not Springsteen. He's not Petty. But the the banging eighties guitar, drums, whiskey-soaked voice played loud - that's Bryan Adams. That is his sweet spot, and and he had lost that. Shyper-generic and not great fun - to me anyway. But he's come back with some new music. It's a first listen for me. Hadn't heard it yet. We're gonna hear it together. We're gonna I'm gonna react to it, and we'll see what we see what I think. What does it do for me? For you? A single called Roll With the Punches was released in February. That's gonna be the name of the album due to come out sometime in 2025. And then he has released a second single in March He's working again with Mutt Lange. Let's see what this sounds like. may stop it as we're getting through part of it. What do we think? So this is the brand new single. It's called "Make Up Your Mind". Let's turn it up and listen together. And then I found a couple of added surprises. :) email: rockpoprollpodcast@gmail.com website: www.rockpopandroll.com

By now, you may have seen a photo taken high above the Detroit River of two iron workers, one from Canada and one from the United States, shaking hands to mark the completion of the deck on the Gordie Howe International Bridge. On this week's edition of the Talking Michigan Transportation podcast, a conversation with those iron workers, Jason Huggett of Canada and Casey Whitson of Michigan. Both are second-generation iron workers. Jason's father helped build the twin span of the Blue Water Bridge linking Port Huron, Michigan, with Sarnia, Ontario. Casey's father worked on the Renaissance Center in Detroit as well as Joe Louis Arena. They talk about what working on this once-in-a-lifetime project means to both of them and how honored each of them was to participate in the handshake. They each spoke about it to the Windsor Detroit Bridge Authority after the handshake: Said Huggett: “I said it was about time we got to shake hands after seeing each other from a distance for almost two years, it was really something special. That handshake means a lot to my family, my two sons and my father, who helped build the twin span for the Blue Water Bridge in Sarnia.” And Whitson: “We would see each other, but we were far, across the river, apart for all these months working. To actually get to be able to meet each other and shake hands and say hello is really cool. It's the biggest moment in my career and I now share something with my father, who helped build the Renaissance Center in Detroit.”

When you come across an “it's been a while since the Knicks did a thing in the playoffs” stat, it generally means you have come across any historic Knicks playoff stat. But, hey, do you know the last time the Knicks closed out a series with a Game 5 road win?Of course you do, it's the Allan Houston game. That was one of nine all-time road Game 5 victories that the Knicks have ever had. The eighth, to be exact, because in the Eastern Conference finals, Latrell Sprewell put 29 points on the Pacers to break a 2-2 series tie, followed by Reggie Miller shooting 3-for-18 and scoring eight points in Game 6, which the Knicks won, 90-82, to go to their most recent NBA Finals. An aside: We as a nation should be talking more about the time Reggie Miller came to Madison Square Garden with the season on the line and put up the John Starks game from the 1994 Finals. Three-for-eighteen instead of two-for-eighteen, and a made three-pointer on eight tries compared to Starks' 0-for-11, but still, eight lousy points and have a nice summer. Only, John Starks wasn't a Hall of Famer carrying the 1994 Knicks. He was a dude who had a bad night. Reggie Miller, on the other hand, is a Hall of Famer and also a choke artist whose signature moment only happened because he shoved Greg Anthony and somehow got away with it.It was Knicks in six in that Eastern Conference finals, which of course was best-of-seven, but the first round at that time was best-of-five, which is why Houston's shot kind of feels like it was in a Game 7.Not to take away from the achievements of the Knicks teams who won do-or-die Game 5s on the road — at Detroit in 1984, at Boston in 1990, at Miami in 1998 in addition to 1999 — but that's a different kettle of fish. A nearly equal sized kettle, as it accounts for four out of the Knicks' nine Game 5 road wins ever. We are not going to simply overlook Bernard King scoring 44 at Joe Louis Arena, or Patrick Ewing dropping a 31-8-10 at the Other Garden, nor Starks connecting for 5-for-9 from downtown in a win-or-go-home game in which the running-on-fumes Knicks started Terry Cummings and gave legit minutes to Anthony Bowie, and won by 17 points.Of the four times the Knicks have won a Game 5 on the road in a best-of-seven series, two have been series clinchers and two have not. The first was decidedly not, as the 1951 Knicks needed every bit of Connie Simmons' 26 points and Max Zalsofsky's 24 to stay alive in the Finals against the Rochester Royals. The Knicks forced a return trip to western New York for Game 7, but fell, 79-75 — two of those Rochester points scored by Red Holzman. Two decades later, Holzman guided the Knicks to all the rest of their road Game 5 wins. First was Game 5 of the 1972 Eastern Conference semifinals in Baltimore, where Jerry Lucas led the way with 20 points and 16 rebounds. The Knicks went home and won Game 6 and the series, 107-101, with incredible balance that saw Lucas and Walt Frazier score 22 apiece, with 20 each for Dave DeBusschere and Bill Bradley. That Game 6, by the way, is the last time the Knicks had four 20-point scorers in a playoff game. The Lakers did that in Game 1 against Memphis this year with Rui Hachimura (29), Austin Reaves (23), Anthony Davis (22), and some guy named LeBron James (21). Actually, if D'Angelo Russell (19) could have gotten one more bucket, the Lakers would've been the first team with five guys scoring 20-plus in a playoff game since Game 5 of the 1987 Finals (Danny Ainge, Larry Bird, Dennis Johnson, Kevin McHale, Robert Parish). Problem for that Celtics team was, the Lakers did the same dang thing in Game 2 with Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Michael Cooper, Magic Johnson, Byron Scott, and James Worthy, and Los Angeles won the series in six.You know who else beat the Celtics? The 1972 Knicks, in five games, including 111-103 to padlock the arena by North Station for the summer. Or, for exactly one week before Game 1 of Bruins-Rangers in that year's Stanley Cup Final. That was the first time that the Knicks closed out a playoff series with a Game 5 road win. The second time, and the only other time that they did it in a best-of-seven?It was the last time the Knicks won the NBA title, with Earl Monroe scoring 23 and Willis Reed adding 18 and 12 to give New York its second title in four seasons. That's the last time the Knicks closed out a best-of-seven with a Game 5 road win, and the last time they won a title — 20 years before this retrospective piece that's now 30 years old. Joseph Donofrio : "As a young Golden Glove fighter, the Sweet Science was in my bloodstream at an early age. After working on various small boxing shows in the 1980's, I decided to move forward reintroducing myself to the next level of promoting. I joined forces with Emanuel Steward in the mid 1990's promoting shows in various venues in Southeastern Michigan. The Palace was always an outstanding venue, a fighters dream to perform in front of thousands of spectators in the “Big House” After a few years of collaboration with Emanuel Steward, he returned to his roots of being one of the best trainers in the world and I took the helm as a sole promoter. After a 20 year run at The Palace, the sudden closure brought me to The Joe Louis Arena, The Fillmore, The Dow Event Center, The Quicken Loans Arena, The Tropicana in Atlantic City and more recently in cooperation with Harley Davidson. Unfortunately, the Coronavirus have placed all events on hold. In the not too distant future, “THE FIGHT BOSS” Donofrio Entertainment and The Impact Fight League will be back in full swing while negotiations coupled with Little Caesars Arena will continue."

Hello everyone, welcome back.Today we'll have a throwback Thursday on The True Story of N.W.A. Playing “Fuck Tha Police” It wasn't gunshots that caused widespread panic. According to the group's inner circle, police set off fireworks to sow chaos. In the summer of 1989 in Detroit, N.W.A. made it through some 30 seconds of "Fuck Tha Police" before apparent gunshots went off in the crowd at Joe Louis Arena. Prior to that, Ice Cube, Dr. Dre, Eazy-E and the rest had played their signature anthem exactly one time on stage—at the Celebrity Theater in Anaheim the previous spring. The group heard the shots and took off, only to run backstage into a line of cops, who threw them to the ground, handcuffed them and hauled them away. It's a dramatic rebellion story that prefigures this era of anti-police-brutality protests, but the way it's told in the group's 2015 biopic Straight Outta Compton isn't exactly true."'We're all running together and getting caught and getting thrown'—I guess that's done for Hollywood," says N.W.A.'s DJ Yella, who was on stage at the time. "We didn't get arrested. All that commotion and we ended up getting a ticket, like $100 or something like that."In the film, Ice Cube gives a stirring speech to introduce the song: "This is N.W.A., we do what the fuck we want to do, we say what the fuck we want to say" and leads the 20,000-some fans in a middle-finger salute before gunshots ring out. In real life, according to people at the show, all it took to start the song was a brief flash of eye contact between Cube and Dre on stage. And those gunshots from the crowd weren't really gunshots. "All of a sudden you hear bap, bap, bap, bap, bap. Guys are running, and guys are trying to storm the stage. And, of course, our security guys are fighting the guys who had stormed the stage," recalls Atron Gregory, the group's tour manager at the time. "Turns out it was the cops, and they had lit off some cherry bombs to create chaos.""I'm the person that was literally two feet away from the police when they lit the fireworks, or the firecrackers," says DJ Speed, who performed with the group on stage. "It was a crazy thing."Because the police responded to “Fuck Tha Police” so quickly and forcefully, the film strongly suggests that, somehow, officers had the authority to tell hip-hop groups what they could and couldn't say or play on stage. But that's not quite the case. In fact, the restriction came from N.W.A.'s inner circle. The late Eazy-E's manager, Jerry Heller, agreed in pre-tour negotiations with Darryll Brooks, the tour's promoter, that the band would be fined $25,000 if it played the song. Why? Brooks, Heller and the band's agent, Jerry Ade, feared the song “was not going to be palatable” to conservative localities. “When you go to the Bible Belt, to the Midwest, they don't allow sexual gyrating postures on stage," Brooks recalls. In his 2006 autobiography Ruthless, the late Heller explained how the police came to enforce the contract: “Insurance carriers required police security as a condition of issuing a policy. No police, no policy. No policy, no concert. So Detroit police threatened to boycott those fuck-the-police motherfuckers, N.W.A.”Although he wasn't present in Detroit, Sir Jinx, a producer who also performed with the group, says police had an agenda to intimidate N.W.A. 's mostly young, African-American fans. "They were just being bullies," he says. "It was a show to the audience that they were in control."And so on August 6, 1989, many of the 20,000 fans in Detroit started chanting “Fuck Tha Police,” so N.W.A. called an audible and played it anyway. Brooks was working in an office somewhere in the arena when he heard the chant, followed by DJ Yella's familiar opening beat drop. Cops were everywhere, Brooks says, because it was a "'rap show'—put that in quotes—so everybody was looking for marijuana." He ran towards the stage, and soon "every police officer in the building started rushing the stage out of nowhere. It looked like the Battle of the Bulge."According to Straight Outta Compton, plainclothes police gradually made their way to the side of the stage during the performance, where they looked on menacingly. In real life, Gregory recalls, N.W.A. had its own security guards posted on the sides of the stage, and once the police arrived, the two sides began to tussle. The movie got one key detail right, according to people who were there: When the group heard the bap, bap, bap, they panicked and fled. “For that 15 or 20 minutes, it was white-hot,” Brooks says. “You can imagine guys running offstage and plainclothes guys running from the venue, on the floor, trying to get over the barrier to catch these guys who were saying ‘Fuck Tha Police.'”In Gregory's account, N.W.A., after running from the stage, removed their hats and reversed their jackets to hide logos and be more anonymous. They boarded a limousine to the hotel a mile or two away, and everybody else in the group's entourage walked unassumingly past the police on horseback. MC Ren's recollection is different: "Me and Dre were together, we ran backstage. We ran out the door, and once we looked out, it was like, 'All right,' and we turned around and went back into the building. Everybody was like, 'Back into the dressing room.' The police were in there trying to give citations, some bullshit like that." DJ Yella wound up alone in the street. "We went all different ways. I ran into the parking lot," he says. "I walked back to the hotel." DJ Speed left with the late Eric "Eazy-E" Wright and Eazy's security guard Big Ron.The cops first wound up backstage, where they tussled with the first rappers they could find—in LL Cool J's dressing room. (Also on the bill that night: De La Soul, Too $hort and Slick Rick.) "So LL's bodyguards are fighting the police!" Gregory recalls. The scene was so stressful that Brooks, the promoter, felt a spike in blood pressure and asked a runner to take him to the emergency room. (He was okay, and returned to the show, which still had two acts left.)Afterward, Gregory returned to the hotel. He handed N.W.A.'s production manager a briefcase full of cash from the show as well as all the plane tickets back to LA. He called the bus driver to check on the two cases full of guns the group carried on the road. They tried to drive the buses into Canada, "just in case something happened," but police arrived shortly after that.Gregory called a cab for the airport, ending up at another hotel two blocks away. He contacted Eazy-E via walkie-talkie, who verified everything was okay. Police chatted amiably with the band about the Detroit Pistons and sports. Ice Cube once told an interviewer that, "They corralled us, arrested us all, and all they wanted was damn autographs for their daughters and sons."Four years ago, when members of the group reunited in Detroit (and played "Fuck Tha Police"), local cops provided a high-speed escort, "like we were the president or something," Yella says. In the Black Lives Matter era, "Fuck Tha Police" has evolved from a too-dangerous-to-be-performed anthem to a timely Spotify hit with 157 million plays. "I've been seeing people on social media playing it and people having their own signs and writing it on buildings," MC Ren says. "It's unfortunate why the song keeps popping up and is as relevant as it is. I don't know why we never played it. We had so many other songs. We could just do this other shit."Back in 1989, did promoters take the $25,000 “Fuck Tha Police” fine from N.W.A's cut? “To the best of my knowledge,” Brooks recalls, “yes, we did.”Stay tuned. That's all we got for now. Jack Sznewajs (@JackSznewajs) will enter his first full season with the Flint Firebirds, having been named the Director of Broadcasting and Communications on May 11, 2021. Sznewajs serves as the local radio (103.1 FM WQUS), online video pay-per-view (OHL Live) and international television (Comcast TV in Michigan, and Rogers TV & Cogeco TV in Ontario, Canada) play-by-play voice for the Flint Firebirds in their sixth season in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL). Additionally, in his current role, Sznewajs is also responsible for the team's game day media notes, in-game live statistics, media relations, NHL scouts' suite, off-ice officials, player appearances, press releases, public relations, live game video, social media and the club's website, www.FlintFirebirds.com. “It's an absolute honor to work for the Firebirds,” said Sznewajs. “I grew up attending games in Plymouth when the team was the Whalers so being apart of the franchise's continued success in Flint now is special. I want to thank Jeremy (Torrey) for this tremendous opportunity and look forward to getting started and preparing for the upcoming season.” Prior to Flint, Sznewajs worked for Big Ten Network and Michigan State athletics, exclusively with the hockey team. He called over 150 NCAA Division 1 games for BTN Student U across seven different sports, including an MSU regular season basketball team when the Spartans were the #2 ranked team in the country. Two of his calls from the game, both dunks from future NBA lottery pick Miles Bridges, were the #1 Play on Sportscenter's Top 10. With a focus on hockey, Sznewajs broadcasted games for current NHL players Mason Appleton, Taro Hirose, Quinn Hughes, Cole Caufield, Alex Turcotte and Josh Norris. Also at Michigan State, Sznewajs was a two-time Michigan Association of Broadcasters (MAB) award winner for his work in college television. Other notable work during his time as MSU was broadcasting the Spartan men's soccer teams run to the Final Four in 2018. Prior to MSU, Sznewajs graduated from the University of Detroit Jesuit high school in 2015. While at U of D, he worked closely with the broadcast club, including being club president his junior and senior year. During his time, he broadcasted over 200 games across six different sports for U of D, the MHSAA, Fox Sports Detroit Prep Zone and the NFHS Network. He covered two Final Fours for U of D in basketball, both led by former Spartan Cassius Winston, two Frozen Fours in hockey, led by former Spartan hockey captain Tommy Apap, and a state title for the schools bowling team. He also got to broadcast games in some of Michigan's most famous arenas, including Compuware Ice Arena (USNTDP), Munn Ice Arena (MSU), Joe Louis Arena (former home of the Detroit Red Wings), Yost Ice Arena (Michigan) and the Calumet Colosseum, which is the oldest active ice arena in North America located in the Upper Peninsula. Sznewajs is a native of Bloomfield Hills, Mich., and graduated from Michigan State University in 2019 with a bachelor's degree in journalism. He is a born-and-raised Spartan with both of his parents, David and Katie, graduating from MSU in 1988. He is the second of four boys, all who grew up in-and-around the game of hockey.

Jeff and Joey recap the first four games of the 2021-2022 season, where the Kraken stand within the Pacific Division, and provide an (entirely too early) outlook on the season based off of what they've seen from the team so far. Joey professes his love for Brandon Tanev before sharing a story about a weekend spent drinking vodka in New Orleans with 2x Stanley Cup Champion Dustin Penner which leads to them hypothesizing on why hockey players can put down more booze than the average human. Next, Jeff believes that opposing teams and fans will find ways to use Climate Pledge Arena as a way to knock the Seattle Kraken but is able to flip that around on them before Joey shares an idea for the home ice goal horn and song for the team that he came across on a Reddit message board. In Hockey History, Jeff shares the origins of The Legend of the Octopus and why throwing them on the ice in Detroit at Joe Louis Arena for Red Wings games when he was a kid was for good luck in the playoffs and how the Rat Trick in Florida for Panthers games came about.
