On April Fool's Day, members of Elon Musk's government dismantling team known as DOGE showed up at the downtown Washington offices of the Wilson Center for International Scholars with grave news. It was not an April Fool's Day prank; they were there to shut it down and fire everyone. The Wilson Center was the home of the Kennan Institute along with a library of some 30,000 books. In this episode, the institute's former director, the historian Michael Kimmage, tells us what's at stake when the government destroys a center of knowledge making, and why our society "must save the books." This exclusive interview was recorded on June 20. Recommended reading: We Must Save the Books by Michael Kimmage in Liberties

"I would say my books are about three quarters research and sort of mining my research, and then one quarter writing," says Hampton Sides, author of several New York Times bestselling works of narrative history, including his latest, now in paperback, The Wide Wide Sea. It's published by Doubleday. So Hampton was great. There was a moment halfway through where my dogs got to barking, then howling, which made me give them a stern talkin' to. I think I edited that out. I should have. Hope I did. I can tolerate a little barking in the background, but the howling is obnoxious. Hampton got a laugh out of all of it … He's the author of eight books including In the Kingdom of Ice, Hellhound on his Trail, and Ghost Soldiers. Here we talk about: How he found his lane of book writing Of transitioning from a journalist to a popular historian Finding the frame Writing in coffee shops Running to the computer in the middle of the night And an April Fool's Day joke gone horribly wrongLearn more about Hampton at hamptonsides.com and follow him on the gram @hamptonsidesauthor.Order The Front RunnerNewsletter: Rage Against the AlgorithmWelcome to Pitch ClubShow notes: brendanomeara.com

Senator Booker's 25-hour "April Fool's Day" speech wasn't just a waste of OUR money; reports suggest his campaign was soliciting funds DURING it! That's a direct violation of Senate ethics rules separating official duty from campaign cash. This isn't just politics; it's about integrity and respecting American taxpayers. In this episode of the Kankakee Podcast, host Jake LaMore is joined by local historian Jack Klasey to take a deep dive into the fascinating history of Kankakee River State Park. Together, they explore the park's origins dating back to 1910, the grand—but ultimately failed—plans for a massive hydroelectric dam that could have transformed the region, and the ongoing efforts to preserve one of Kankakee County's treasured natural spaces.Jake and Jack discuss the gradual expansion of the state park, beginning with an initial land donation in 1938 and culminating in the park's growth to over 4,000 acres along both banks of the river. Along the way, they uncover stories of would-be resorts, lost political battles, and the key figures—like State Senator Victor McBroom—who fought to ensure the land would remain public and undeveloped for generations to enjoy. The episode also brings to light the unique ecological and cultural features of the park, from rare wildflowers to the rich heritage of the Potawatomi people. The conversation meanders through tales of lost towns, old highways, and even a family cemetery within the park's boundaries. Jack highlights the importance of preserving wild spaces, while Jake reflects on the park's role as a destination for families and visitors from across the region. They also touch on quirky bits of local lore, like the remains of old railroad piers and an April Fool's Day prank involving a TV shoot at the state park. How did Kankakee River State Park nearly become a huge lake? What's the story behind Rock Creek Canyon and its iconic stepping stones? And why is there a rusted truck hidden deep in the woods? It started as an April Fool's joke and then morphed into a BEAST of a book complete with 967 illustrations called "Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, the Ultimate Illustrated Guidebook". In episode 424 I chat with renowned BJJ black belt, illustrator and designer Seymour Yang (better known as Meerkatsu) and his partner in crime Graham Barlow (the creator of the Tai Chi Notebook) about the core techniques of BJJ, modern vs traditional jiu-jitsu, and the process of bringing a new book into the world. World Backup Day falls on March 31st - the day before April Fool's Day because not backing up your data is no joke. In this episode, hosts W. Curtis Preston and Prasanna Malaiyandi discuss alarming statistics about data loss and why proper backup strategies are essential for business survival. The hosts break down the famous 3-2-1 backup rule and how it applies to both consumers and enterprises. They examine the growing threat of ransomware, including double extortion attacks where criminals not only encrypt your data but threaten to publish it. With 94% of companies that suffer major data loss failing to recover, and 70% of small businesses closing within a year of significant data loss, World Backup Day serves as a crucial reminder to implement robust backup strategies that include immutable storage and protection for often-overlooked SaaS applications.Stories from this episode:https://www.forbes.com/sites/tomcoughlin/2025/03/31/march-31-is-world-backup-day/https://objectfirst.com/blog/world-backup-day-2025/https://www.backupwrapup.com/peter-krogh-who-coined-the-3-2-1-rule-on-our-podcast/

The thrill of tricking someone, the joy of getting away with a joke until the laughter fades and something sinister takes its place. What starts as fun can quickly turn into a nightmare, where the boundaries between prank and harsh reality blurs, and the consequences are far worse than imagined. First, don't look behind you. Followed by game over… for good. Finally in our last story, Five knocks, you're dead. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Election Results: Recent elections in Florida and Wisconsin were significant for control in the House and for President Trump's agenda. Republicans won two congressional seats in Florida, providing a slight majority in the House. In Wisconsin, a constitutional amendment for voter ID passed, but a liberal judge won a Supreme Court seat. Longest Filibuster: Senator Cory Booker set a new record for the longest filibuster in Senate history, surpassing Ted Cruz's previous record. Cruz shared anecdotes about his own filibuster experience, including advice from Rand Paul and the challenges of standing for long periods. April Fool's Day Prank: Cruz played an April Fool's joke by tweeting a photoshopped image of himself without a beard, which garnered a lot of reactions.
