Your instagram bio is like a free billboard for your business. So if you just randomly put some stuff on there, you are missing out on an amazing opportunity to invite your ideal community into your circle. This episode is all about creating an instagram bio that converts. Your instagram bio should serve 3 purposes:Tell people who you areWhat you offerWhy someone should follow youIf you don’t master your IG header, people will click away from your profile. If you try to jam in too much, viewers will get confused and then click away from your profile. We want to find that sweet spot where people can instantly get your vibe and have a desire to get to know you even more.Profile PictureThe great debate that so many people are dealing with is what they should put as their profile picture. Do you do a logo or a photo of you? It’s an excellent question, and here’s my thoughts on this. If you are selling a product or have a storefront, I would suggest using your logo. If you are a personal brand, which most of you probably are, then you should use a photo of yourself. And not just any old photo. There’s a whole science to choosing a profile picture, and GUESS WHAT?! I’m doing a whole episode on this in a few weeks. But to give you the quick and dirty on this, use a photo of your face that makes you easily recognizable. Also, remember the devices that people use to view your profile picture. It’s tiny, and your profile picture isn’t clickable to enlarge, so you want to use an image that shows a good portion of your face.NameThis seems like it would be a simple field to complete, but there is definitely some strategy that goes into what to put for your name. To start, make sure to include YOUR NAME, or if you’re a product brand, the name of that. But you also want to include a few niche keywords that describe who you are or what you do. Location is an important part to include if you are location dependent, so this is where you should include that. But remember, you only have 30 character spaces in order to do this, so make sure that you are using those characters wisely. It really helps you to think creatively and get super specific on who it is that you are serving. So why is the name space so important? Because this field is part of a powerful search engine that is housed inside of instagram. And the more specific you can get, the better people can find you. Don’t gloss over crafting a name that helps you get found by your ideal clients. For example, if you are a photographer in Boston, you’ll want to have your name say something like: Anna|Boston Newborn PhotographerOr if you are a coach, you can put, Jill Smith, OH Financial CoachMain BioThe key to crafting your main bio is to keep it short and snappy. Meaning 3 lines only. Why? Because that’s all you get for space. There used to be a time when instagram would let you have a huge bio, but your bio would get hidden behind that dreaded “more” button. But because no one really ever clicks that button in order to read more, IG decided to get rid of that option. So now you are limited to 150 characters or 3 lines. The main bio is meant to help people easily connect with you, see what you have to offer, and easily decide if they want to be in your inner circle. Keeping it to three lines doesn’t mean that you need to jam a ton of information in there. It also doesn’t mean that you should waste space with a bunch of emojis. If you want to include an emoji, make sure to use it to your advantage, where it will easily convey a word or a message using only one of your precious character count and show your personality at the same time. Family dynamics are always tricky to navigate, especially around the holiday season. Dr. Jessica Lougheed focuses her research on family dynamics, and specifically on conflict resolution. In this episode she shares two important scales family can use to measure a healthy family dynamic: 1) family cohesion: the balance between separateness and connectedness2) family flexibility: the balance between stability and change. Family conflict is a natural part of human life and can be healthy if it’s resolved in an appropriate way. Dr. Lougheed also gives practical techniques for resolving conflicts. Some examples include meta communication where families talk about how they communicate, defensive statements, mindful listening, and “I” statements. Most importantly, she shares how emotional repair after conflict can lead to better connections within relationships. One of the trickiest parts of holding yourself to a high standard in life is that it’s only natural to start to expect others to do the same. You’re not taking the easy road, why should they be able to? You’re putting in the work, why aren’t they? You don’t lie, cheat, or steal, is it so crazy to assume others shouldn’t either? Look at your results—where are theirs?Marcus Aurelius must have struggled with this too. He hadn’t wanted to be emperor, but he was pressed into duty. Still, with all this power, he was trying to be good and do good. What was everyone else’s excuse? It’s something that lots of brilliant leaders and talented people have wrestled with through the centuries, whether it’s Kobe Bryant trying to figure out why his teammates aren’t as dedicated as he is, or an A student wondering why the other people in their group aren’t striving for the grade they areWhat we know is that Marcus Aurelius found a way through. We’re told of it by the historian Cassius Dio, and it’s a worthy example for us to think about today:“So long as a person did anything good, he would praise him and use him for the service in which he excelled, but to his other conduct he paid no attention; for he declared that it is impossible for one to create such men as one desires to have, and so it is fitting to employ those who are already in existence for whatever service each of them may be able to render to the State.”We only control our behavior. We can only fully uphold our standards for ourselves. As leaders, we have to work to meet everyone else where they are—get as much as we can from them and of them—but we can’t make ourselves miserable expecting them to be like us. Because they aren’t. What they do is in their control. What we do is in ours. Remember what Seneca learned with Nero: You can lead a horse to water but you can’t make them drink. Never forget that. Get the best you can from yourself and hope—but don’t expect—for the best from everyone else. That’s all you can do.

Join me and my guest, Josh Cary, for another wonderfully inspiring episode! As two former thespians, we explore what it means to hide behind fear—and take a look at what happens when we wear different masks. We have a lively conversation about:How and why we seek approval and hide behind fear to please othersHow we resist and ignore the hero within and create inner conflictSeeking external approval or validation versus giving what we need to ourselvesWhy we are so afraid of being who we truly areWhat to do when we are sick and tired of being sick and tiredWhat we create in our external world when we live in conflict of hiding our true selvesJosh’s 5-step slow, deliberate, consistent process that gets you to where you truly belongWhat happens when we start showing up in the role we have always known we are capable of and stop hiding behind our fear And so much more!Josh Cary spent 40 years in hiding! That’s right. He was hiding every aspect of himself and showing up with a ‘mask’ on in all areas of life trying to gain the approval of everyone else. At 19, he changed his name and entered into, what would become, a 15-year career as a professional actor and filmmaker. The applause and external accolades didn’t completely heal his feelings of anxiety and insecurities and he found himself more isolated than ever. Today, Josh Cary is a digital media and creative consultant, with the uncanny ability to bring the human side out of each person. Whether it’s as a guest on his show or working directly together, you quickly feel consumed by his unique natural energy, bright outlook and creative mind. He is also a proud father and credits his adoring two young children with helping him to turn things around and embrace the mortality of life. If you are inspired to reach out, you can find Josh at www.joshcary.com or on social media @hiddenentrepreneurAnd if you liked this episode, be sure to share it, rate it, review it, and/or subscribe to it!
