Jill Smith in conversation with David Eastauggh https://www.jill-smith.co.uk/ Born in London, Jill trained as an actress at RADA, and was later known as Jill Bruce. In the 1970s and early 1980s, she was a Performance Artist in partnership with the late Bruce Lacey. For five years they received funding from the then Arts Council of Great Britain. Evolving through science fantasy and alchemy, the performances were spectacular, largely outdoor, ceremonial, ritual celebrations of the turning cycles of earth and cosmos. Jill evolved her wonderful costumes as a form of living sculpture, wearing them to evoke the spirits and energies of the elements and forces she was honouring. The performances were at venues all over Britain: at fairs, festivals, art centres, colleges, art galleries; and alone at ancient sites – the documentation of these being later exhibited with installation and Performance at major exhibitions, including two at the Acme Gallery and one at the Serpentine.

Your instagram bio is like a free billboard for your business. So if you just randomly put some stuff on there, you are missing out on an amazing opportunity to invite your ideal community into your circle. This episode is all about creating an instagram bio that converts. Your instagram bio should serve 3 purposes:Tell people who you areWhat you offerWhy someone should follow youIf you don’t master your IG header, people will click away from your profile. If you try to jam in too much, viewers will get confused and then click away from your profile. We want to find that sweet spot where people can instantly get your vibe and have a desire to get to know you even more.Profile PictureThe great debate that so many people are dealing with is what they should put as their profile picture. Do you do a logo or a photo of you? It’s an excellent question, and here’s my thoughts on this. If you are selling a product or have a storefront, I would suggest using your logo. If you are a personal brand, which most of you probably are, then you should use a photo of yourself. And not just any old photo. There’s a whole science to choosing a profile picture, and GUESS WHAT?! I’m doing a whole episode on this in a few weeks. But to give you the quick and dirty on this, use a photo of your face that makes you easily recognizable. Also, remember the devices that people use to view your profile picture. It’s tiny, and your profile picture isn’t clickable to enlarge, so you want to use an image that shows a good portion of your face.NameThis seems like it would be a simple field to complete, but there is definitely some strategy that goes into what to put for your name. To start, make sure to include YOUR NAME, or if you’re a product brand, the name of that. But you also want to include a few niche keywords that describe who you are or what you do. Location is an important part to include if you are location dependent, so this is where you should include that. But remember, you only have 30 character spaces in order to do this, so make sure that you are using those characters wisely. It really helps you to think creatively and get super specific on who it is that you are serving. So why is the name space so important? Because this field is part of a powerful search engine that is housed inside of instagram. And the more specific you can get, the better people can find you. Don’t gloss over crafting a name that helps you get found by your ideal clients. For example, if you are a photographer in Boston, you’ll want to have your name say something like: Anna|Boston Newborn PhotographerOr if you are a coach, you can put, Jill Smith, OH Financial CoachMain BioThe key to crafting your main bio is to keep it short and snappy. Meaning 3 lines only. Why? Because that’s all you get for space. There used to be a time when instagram would let you have a huge bio, but your bio would get hidden behind that dreaded “more” button. But because no one really ever clicks that button in order to read more, IG decided to get rid of that option. So now you are limited to 150 characters or 3 lines. The main bio is meant to help people easily connect with you, see what you have to offer, and easily decide if they want to be in your inner circle. Keeping it to three lines doesn’t mean that you need to jam a ton of information in there. It also doesn’t mean that you should waste space with a bunch of emojis. If you want to include an emoji, make sure to use it to your advantage, where it will easily convey a word or a message using only one of your precious character count and show your personality at the same time. READ MORE AT: www.britbennion.com/episode69

Jill shared the story of how she adopted her two children. Then they gave updates on what life looks for them now.  Janelle Keller is the Executive Director of Foundation For His Ministry (FFHM). FFHM has children’s homes and outreach ministries in Tijuana, Sinaloa, Baja California, and Oaxaca, Mexico. She is a graduate of Moody Bible Institute in Chicago, IL, and had her first exposure to FFHM on a trip to the Baja Mission in 2000. On that trip, God got ahold of her heart, and a passion for Mexico was kindled in her. In 2007 Janelle went to serve at the Oaxaca Mission, where she lived for 4 years before coming to work in their US office in San Clemente, CA. These days she looks for any excuse she can find to travel to Mexico and loves being a part of what God is doing there.   Jill Smith is the Director of Mexico Operations for Foundation For His Ministry (FFHM). Originally from Michigan, after graduating from Calvin College in Grand Rapids, she moved to the Chicago area to serve at Willow Creek Community Church. It was then that Jill heard about FFHM for the first time and took her first trip to Mexico. Alongside Janelle, Jill went to serve full-time at the Oaxaca location in 2007. While there, she became a mother, through adoption, to Celina, who is now 12, and Nathan, who is now 9. After completing their adoptions, Jill and the kids relocated to the Baja Mission, where she became the Director. It was there that she met her husband, Tim. They now live in Tijuana, where she oversees all of the mission locations in Mexico.  Alyssa had the privilege of meeting Janelle & Jill in 2009 on her first of many trips to the children’s home in Oaxaca and it has been such a joy to see how they are working to change the lives of children and families in Mexico through Foundation For His Ministry.  Connect with Janelle on IG @janellekeller and on Facebook Connect with Jill on IG @jillvadams and on Facebook Learn more about (FFHM) Foundation For His Ministry on IG @ffjmorg on Facebook and online at www.ffhm.org Follow us on IG @fitformotherhoodpod Join our community at www.fitformotherhoodpodcast.com

Welcome to the Mind Your Own Business Podcast!     Today we chat with wedding photographers David Scruggs and Jill Smith about several things that define a photographer as a professional, so that you not only rarely miss those important moments in a subject's life, but NEVER compromise on the quality of an image: Listen, listen, listen - your role when capturing memories is to know and understand your client. That can only come with listening to them and building a relationship based on understanding their needs. You have to see the world through their eyes. Never compromise your skill set - Being a photographer is about meeting your client's needs and having the skills to photograph at any time, regardless of the degree of difficulty. Of course there will be times when something that comes up that's simply over your head, but that doesn't change the importance of a never-ending quest for your own education. Backup gear - When you least expect it, something is going to go wrong with your gear. Normal wear and tear, a dropped camera body or lens, a piece of equipment stolen - NEVER be without backup gear for those "just in case" moments. Always be on time - Your clients trust you to be where you're supposed to be and always on time. And, even if you arrive just a few minutes late, you've created stress that wasn't necessary. Keep your promises - NEVER make a promise you can't keep. Build a relationship - In any business, but especially photography, it's important to build an ongoing relationship both leading up to an event and especially afterwards. Your success is about your ability to build trust. Exceed expectations - Remember - "There are no traffic jams along the extra mile!" Roger Staubach Love your career choice and show your passion for capturing memories - You can't capture images that tug at people's heartstrings if your own heart isn't in it! Recognize the need for change - Whether it's your own style or simply tracking consumer trends, being a pro is about adapting and being able to stay relevant to consumer demands. Support your associates and the industry - While this is outside the client/photographer relationship, a strong network can also help you through some of the most difficult challenges. Be involved in your local guild or association. Be helpful to other photographers and you'll find they'll also be there for you. Things come up that just aren't planned, but working together there's nothing you can't accomplish. Have fun and be fun to work with - "Fun" is one of those words so often lost in business today. Building trust, capturing memories and being an outstanding artist has a core focus on loving what you do. Everybody has a bad day now and then, but being a professional photographer is about loving people and seeing the world through their eyes and often heart.   You can find David and Jill at: OneSoulPhotography.com   Have suggestions on future topics you want us to cover? In today's episode, we'll get the final details on how things went and what she'd do differently if she were to do this again. Martha sticks around for the second part of the show, where we bring in Jill Smith, the narrator for Martha's Wallis Jones series. The first of the audiobooks was just released, and the two of them discuss the way they've worked together on the series. For those of you who haven't tried audio yet, you may learn a thing or two about how the process works for both the narrator and the author.
