Art School Confidential is a 2006 parody film of college life as a student. The film is filled with plenty of nonsense, pretentious behaviour, backstabbing and a side of murder mystery. Based on the partially true events of a graphic novelists journey through art school and also part fiction. Trashed by critics, will this film be revived or is it simply destined for the waste bin.  Directed by the same director of ghost world (Terry Zwigoff) and Screenplay by Daniel Clowes. Starring Max Minghella, Sophia Myles and John Malkovich. Special appearances from Anjelica Huston and Steve Buscemi.

Documenteers: The Documentary Podcast

It's THE MOST WONDERFUL TIME OF THE YEAR and we're putting some extra movies in your stocking this week leading up to Christmas and we're discussing a modern Christmas comedy hit that's a pretty good movie to watch if you're not really a big fan of Christmas. There's, maybe, only one truly good person in this movie and his name is Thurman Merman. Everybody else from the derelict Santa and the homicidal dwarf to the everyday people we briefly interact with, most everyone in this movie is pretty insufferable. Crude but relatable, we sit down and discuss Terry Zwigoff's (Crumb, Ghost World, Art School Confidential) most successful movie to date, “BAD SANTA” from 2003 starring Billy Bob Thornton, Tony Cox, John Ritter in his last performance, the late Bernie Mac and prime Lauren Graham. A couple of cons plot to play Santa and rob a store like they do every year, but the one playing Santa is a complete mess. He's a Bad Santa who cons himself into the heart of a young, awkward boy, who gives him a purpose that involves attacking teenagers. It's better than pissing yourself or running your car in the garage with a hose going from your exhaust to the driver's seat. A crude embellishment with a pinch of heartfelt sincerity. Kind of like me. In 1917, Marcel Duchamp trolled the New York art scene with Fountain, the famous urinal, whose significance has since swelled in the minds of art aficionados to become the prototype of all modern art. The conversation as to whether or not Fountain fulfills the conditions of a genuine work of art has been going on ever since. In this episode, JF and Phil weigh in with their own ideas, not just about what art is, but more importantly, about what art -- and only art -- can do. The result is a no-holds-barred assault on the very idea of conceptual art, a j'accuse aimed squarely at Duchamp and anyone else who would make the arts as scrutable, and as trivial, as the latest political attack ad or home insurance jingle. Hello friends, and welcome to the Spring Semester of Got Me A Movie! Andrew and Elbee are hittin’ the books as they discuss two school-related films: 2006’s Art School Confidential and 2000’s Crime + Punishment In Suburbia. First up is Art School Confidential, adapted from the work of underground comic artist Daniel Clowes. In this section of the show, the hosts talk about their experiences with Clowes’ art and comic books in general; Elbee brings up how she can’t really read comics very well, and Andrew speaks about his influences as an illustrator himself. Later, Elbee shares a brief history of cult beverage OK Soda (why? You’ll have to listen to find out!), and the two reminisce about “that ‘90s feeling.” The second half of the show features Crime + Punishment In Suburbia, a film loosely based on Fyodor Dostoevsky’s famous novel of nearly the same name. Elbee points out how the character and situational analogues don’t really work, but Andrew contends that they do indeed work well enough. Later, the pair get a tad philosophical with a discussion on criminal accountability. Well the answer to the question is a big giant yes, yes I do get inspired by biographies, documentaries, and films that feature artists and their journey through their life is an artist.  Whether the movie is fiction, factual, inspirational or biographical I always learn something from these individuals that have pave the way for other artists in history.  I am also inspired by production companies like Pixar, Disney, Lucas films etc. because those stories and journeys, trials triumphs and failures have all resulted in a unique art form that everyone of all ages can truly appreciate.  There are a handful of films that I have found that feature artists and the story of their life and their work that has inspired me in one way shape or form.  Alrighty… in not in any particular order I'm going to start off with films that just come right to my mind that I have really enjoyed, These are films about the artist themselves or representation of an artist: 1.) The Girl with the Pearl Earring  2.) Frida the story of Frida Kahlo 3.) The Thomas Crown Affair 4.) Pollick about Jackson Pollock 5.) Bigeyes about Margaret Keane 6.) Basquiat 7.) Midnight in Paris, 8.) Women in Gold (not Women in Red as I said in the podcast) …. and there are probably another 25 or so movies I could talk about....  Then there some movies that were off the beaten path that I'm not sure sure if they were big box office hits, but these are ones that come to mind and definitely worth a watch: 1.) Art School Confidential 2.) Chocolat 3.) June Bug  4.) The Best Offer Now I know perhaps some of you will be writing to me saying "what about this movie and what about that movie", I try to answer all these questions as fresh as they come in and as swiftly and spontaneous as I can. I want to be able to answer these questions so that they are as organic as possible unless it's something I truly have to research this is the format of this Fan Mail Friday is to address questions as they would as a spontaneous response based on if we were sitting around the table talking. If I have more time this week I will certainly delve into other movies, but I just wanted to address some that off the top of my head I have seen, I have been inspired by them most of them I would say I've watched more than 3 or 4 times …. and if I'm channel surfing and I see one of these movies or other artistic movies I will stop and watch it no matter what seeing the movie is in. Ha ha! Then there are the biographies, there are far too many biographies that I could mention right now that are awesome, I believe if you check on YouTube or even Google most famous artist you will find a biography or Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/rockstarmentor)

The girls sit down with actor Jeremy Guskin (’Til Death, Art School Confidential and JULIA’S OLD HS THEATER TEACHER!) and gush about the Simpsons’ infamous international episode. They discuss overly ambitious yet wildly obscure Halloween costumes, the real life story behind this episode, and that fresh faced young upstart Martin Scorsese. This episode is so great it'll have your brain saying "Just listen to the show and I'll release some more endorphins."
