From the iconic to the absolute depths of comedic hell, the Betty Thomas episode has it all. We've got an episode long runner, one of Eddie Murphy's most famous and iconic sketches, a whole lot of Jim Belushi trying to establish himself on the show and one of the most problematic sketches we've seen in quite some time. Oh, and one of us watched the live version and the other watched the rerun and thus, chaos ensues.
Erin and Paul review two films about low-class media provocateurs who become unlikely free-speech champions: Milos Forman's 1996 porn-king biopic THE PEOPLE VS. LARRY FLYNT, and Betty Thomas' 1997 retelling of the legend of Howard Stern, PRIVATE PARTS.
Dennis is joined via Zoom by television writer Stan Zimmerman to talk about his memoir The Girls: From Golden to Gilmore, which documents his career working on such iconic shows as Roseanne, The Golden Girls and Gilmore Girls as well as The Brady Bunch Movie and A Very Brady Sequel. In this first part of a two-part interview, Stan talks about his midwest upbringing and how his mother bought him the ballet shoes he wanted behind his father's back. He also talks about meeting his longtime writing partner Jim Berg, why they work wll together and how they landed a gig on the first season of The Golden Girls when they were still in their 20's Stan also recalls feeling like he had to stay in the closet on that job but feeling like he had an ally in Estelle Getty. He talks about the culture of fear that was so common in TV writers rooms in those days and expresses hope that things are better today. He also talks fondly about working with director Betty Thomas on the first Brady Bunch Movie as a punch-up writer and feeling like his contribution was finally being properly appreciated...only to end up without a screen credit thanks to an old WGA rule. He also recalls Bea Arthur being concerned that the Golden Girls writing staff was too young, Rue McLanahan being extra funny when she said words ending in E-R, and the eyebrow raising thing Betty White would do when Estelle Getty flubbed her lines. Other topics include: the warm fuzzies Stan gets when he talks with Golden Girls fans, suggesting RuPaul for that cameo in The Brady Bunch Movie, Pia Zadora's giant cell phone and how when it comes to a career in entertainment, it's all about perseverance.

A year later, when Sam went about having a swimming pool put in his backyard, an elderly man showed up at his door to report that he was about to dig up human remains. The reason he knew they were there was because he had buried them years before when the land was still a cemetery. Proceeding to dig, it was not long before Sam came upon two skeletons just where the elderly man said they were. There were two pine boxes, each with the indentation of a skeletal form. Sam immediately called the Sheriff and county coroner who conducted an official exhumation. Most of the bones had turned to powder, but twenty-five fragments were found, some so brittle that they disintegrated when touched. Two wedding rings were discovered on the exposed skeletons' frail fingers. Sam and Judith tried to determine the skeletons' identity. They contacted long-time resident Jasper Norton, who told them that he had dug several graves in the area when he was a teenager. Their home and several others had been built on top of an African American cemetery called "Black Hope". The deceased were mainly former slaves. The last burial occurred there in 1939. Construction crews destroyed all traces of it during the building of the subdivision. Local research revealed the skeletons were of Charlie and Betty Thomas. They had been born into slavery and freed during the Civil War. They died during the 1930s. Plagued by guilt for digging up Charlie and Betty's graves, Sam and Judith decided to rebury them. Despite this, the dead would not rest. One night, Judith discovered her clock glowing and sparking. When she checked, it was unplugged. On another night, Sam was working the night shift, so Judith was alone. After taking a shower, she heard her sliding glass door open and close. Then she heard someone ask, "What are you doing?" She assumed it was Sam, but he was not there. The next morning, Judith went to get her red shoes, but they were not in the closet. Sam helped her look throughout the house, but they could not find them. Inexplicably, they turned up outside over Charlie and Betty's grave. They later learned that the same day was Betty's birthday. Sam believes that this was Charlie giving her a birthday present. Sam and Judith were not the only ones that experienced supernatural phenomenon. A dozen of their neighbors also reported lights, televisions, and water faucets turning on and off. Many heard unearthly sounds and saw supernatural apparitions. Ben and Jean Williams moved into the same subdivision around the same time as Sam and Judith. Shortly after, Jean noticed that her plants kept dying. She reported that sinkholes appeared in the unmistakable shape of a coffin near their flowerbeds. They would fill them in, only to have them reappear a few days later. Ben and Jean also noticed strange markings on a tree near the sinkholes. An arrow pointed toward the ground. Beneath it were two horizontal slash marks. A longtime resident told Ben and Jean that he had marked the tree. He said that he had done so because his two sisters were buried beneath it. Ben and Jean felt guilty for practically desecrating their graves.

In December 2019, 83-year-old Betty Thomas was murdered in her home when the cable guy returned to her home under the guise of finishing his work. Fast forward to July 2022 and this story makes another shocking headline. The cable company Spectrum was found to be negligent in Thomas' murder and was subsequently instructed to pay $375 million in damages and an additionally $7 billion in punitive damages. And if the numbers aren't enough to make you wonder, Spectrum was found to be 90% responsible for Thomas' death while perpetrator Roy James Holden was found to be only 10% responsible for his act. Host Jack Russo discusses this Texas case that resulted in a rather unexpected ruling.
Roy Holden Jr performed some work for Spectrum Cable in Irving, Texas, at the home of 83-year-old Betty Thomas. While off duty, he returned the next day and stabbed her to death. Police apprehended him after he stole her credit card and went shopping. Currently, Holden is serving a life sentence for murder. A Dallas County jury found Spectrum Cable or Charter Communications responsible for 90 percent of the civil liability this week. After previously awarding them $357 million (£2.9m) in compensatory damages last month, the jury awarded them $7 billion in punitive damages. Thomas' family's lawyer, Chris Hamilton, said after the trial: "This was a shocking breach of faith by a company that sends workers into millions of homes every year." “This verdict justly reflects the extensive evidence regarding the nature of the harm caused by Charter Spectrum's gross negligence and reckless misconduct. “For the safety of the American public, we can only hope that Charter Spectrum and its shareholders are listening.” According to Charter, Holden is solely responsible for the killing, and the verdict will be appealed. "Our hearts go out to Mrs. Thomas' family in the wake of this senseless and tragic crime," the company said. “The responsibility for this horrible act rests solely with Mr. Holden, who was not on duty, and we are grateful he is in prison for life. “While we respect the jury and the justice system, we strongly disagree with the verdict.” According to the company, the murder was 'not foreseeable' and that relevant background checks were conducted. A news release from the company read: “The law in Texas and the facts presented at trial clearly show this crime was not foreseeable — and the plaintiffs' claims of wrongdoing by Charter are categorically false. “We are committed to the safety of all our customers and took the necessary steps, including a thorough pre-employment criminal background check — which showed no arrests, convictions or other criminal behavior. "Nor did anything in Mr. Holden's performance after he was hired suggest he was capable of the crime he committed, including more than 1,000 completed service calls with zero customer complaints about his behavior.” If you like TRUE CRIME TODAY - Be sure to search and subscribe wherever you download podcasts! Having made his feature film debut starring in the teen comedy CAVEGIRL Daniel Roebuck quickly realized that there was only one direction to travel in his career. Up!Soon after CAVEGIRL, Roebuck established himself as one of the industry's youngest character actors with his haunting portrayal as the teenage killer, Samson in THE RIVER'S EDGE.Since then Daniel Roebuck has continually challenged himself with each new role he undertakes. His fearlessness was readily apparent as Roebuck took on the guise of Jay Leno in THE LATE SHIFT, HBO's critically acclaimed telefilm, written by Bill Carter, directed by Betty Thomas, and executive produced by Ivan Reitman. THE LATE SHIFT detailed the "late night wars" as NBC jockeyed for the services of Jay Leno and David Letterman following Johnny Carson's retirement from "The Tonight Show." Roebuck described the task of playing such a high-visibility entertainer as "the hardest thing I've ever done." However, after driving past Leno while on his way to an initial make-up test for the role, Roebuck believes there is a "definite serendipity" to his involvement in the project.Never one to be satisfied, Daniel stepped into another set of famous shoes when he was asked to play Garry Marshall in BEHIND THE CAMERA; MORK AND MINDY, THE UNAUTHORIZED STORY. A long time fan of Marshall's oeuvre, Roebuck was thrilled to yet another leap into the world of Bio pics.Aside from his numerous on camera projects, Daniel has recently lent his voice to two animated films. In the first, CHRISTMAS IS HERE AGAIN, Daniel plays an elf named Paul Rocco. Roebuck is also producing the 2007 release. The second film is THE HAUNTED WORLD OF ELSUPERBEASTO. In it, Daniel reprises his role of Morris Green, from Rob Zombie's THE DEVIL'S REJECTS. Although many actors have played the same character in 2 different movies, this may be the first time that one project was live action and the second film was animated! In 2005 Roebuck settled back into series television when he joined the cast of LOST in the last three episodes of the acclaimed series' first season. Daniel played the misunderstood Dr. Leslie Arzt and made TV history when he exploded on camera in the season finale!Roebuck has been a familiar face on television over the last 20 years, he was a regular for three seasons on the evergreen hit drama, MATLOCK, portraying attorney 'Cliff Lewis," the junior partner of the law firm headed by Andy Griffith's beloved character, 'Ben Matlock.' Interestingly, his landing the role was the fulfillment of a promise made several years earlier with his first appearance on "Matlock" in its inaugural season. At that time, Roebuck was told that Griffith had been so impressed with his work that he would be back as a regular on the show. It took five seasons, two more guest shots as different characters, and a change of networks, but Griffith kept his promise and Roebuck indeed became a series regular. In the fall of 2003 Mr. Roebuck returned to series television as Pete Peterson in A MINUTE WITH STAN HOOPER, Fox TV's new comedy starring Norm MacDonald. In the series Roebuck portrayed a gay owner of the local diner where much of the action took place.Audiences will also remember Daniel for his many unforgettable guest star roles on television over the years. Grateful that he's never been typecast Roebuck has played cops to crooks and everything in between. Some of his memorable characters include a super villain attempting world domination on LOIS AND CLARK, THE NEW ADVENTURES OF SUPERMAN, a Romulan on STAR TREK, an Army lieutenant on THE WEST WING, a Catholic Priest on ANY DAY NOW, a sex addict on SIX FEET UNDER, a distraught husband on ER and a fleeing mob accountant on MONK. Other recent credits include NAVY NCIS, GHOST WHISPERER, CSI, BOSTON LEGAL, LAW AND ORDER and DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES and CLOSE TO HOME.However it was a turn as the gun wielding crazy,

So…I’d never heard of Barry Bremen. Apparently, he’s Michigan marketing executive who dressed as the San Diego Chicken, an umpire and a Dallas Cowboys cheerleader to sneak into big events. Bremen ended up in the third row at the 1985 Emmy Awards and jumped on stage to accept the supporting actress award for Betty Thomas. Bremen usually got caught and arrested, but he once said he didn’t mind paying bail [source: mercurynews.com].He seems to have gotten really famous from those stunts. We’ll be reading about a party crasher in our study of Luke this Sunday, reading Luke 7:36-50. She has been famous for much longer, and for far more noble reasons. This story in Luke is similar to ones in Mark, Matthew and John – though scholars mostly consider this to be a unique incident, not associated with the others.A good idea when reading this is to put yourself into the place of each the characters interacting with Jesus. Why do you suppose the Pharisee didn’t see himself as someone who had to be forgiven very much (the point of Jesus’ parable). The woman, on the other hand, seems overwhelmed by the forgiveness she received. Where do you fall on this line – as one who feels they’ve been forgiven little or much? How comfortable or uncomfortable are you in demonstrating your gratitude to Christ in worship? There’s a lot to ponder from this little vignette. In the parable, what did the debtors have to do in order to be forgiven what they owed? What does that tell us about the nature of our forgiven status? How might a knowledge of grace impact our sense of gratitude to God?Hopefully you can join us this Sunday at 10 AM as we dig into this wonderful gospel!Click here for a pdf version of the teaching slideshow.

She is known for her Emmy Award-winning role as Sergeant Lucy Bates on the television series Hill Street Blues. As of March 2018, Thomas is one of just two directors (and the only solo director) to have multiple films on the list of seventeen highest-US-grossing female-directed films. Additionally, all of her films are in the top twenty-five highest-US-grossing female-directed films. After having lied to a Variety reporter about planning on directing a Hooperman episode, she was given a real opportunity by the show's executive producer, and from there her directing career began.[13] After making several other acting appearances, Thomas began directing episodes of Hooperman in addition to the premiere episodes of Doogie Howser, M.D. in 1989. She went on to direct episodes of Arresting Behavior and several episodes of the HBO series Dream On, the latter of which earned her an Emmy for best director. Thomas is nicknamed "The Midnight Queen" because of her preference for nighttime shoots. In 1992 Thomas took the next step in her directing career with her feature debut Only You. A slight, playful romantic comedy; Only You was a departure from Thomas's experience on Hill Street Blues or her subsequent television directing. Wayne Rice, the film's producer and screenwriter, said that Thomas was chosen to direct due in part to the film's plot in which a man is on a hapless quest to find the perfect woman would be considered inherently sexist without a female director. Three years following the release of Only You Thomas directed The Brady Bunch Movie (1995), a satirical vision of the 1970s television series The Brady Bunch. The Brady Bunch Movie was a box office hit with domestic ticket sales of $46,576,136, nearly quadrupling its $12 million budget and making it at the time one of the highest-grossing films directed by a woman. She followed The Brady Bunch Movie with other successes, including Private Parts (1997), Dr. Dolittle (1998), 28 Days (2000), and John Tucker Must Die (2006). 2009's Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel became the first female-directed picture to gross more than $200 million and made her the most successful woman director to that time at the box office. In 2012, Thomas directed a low-budget online series called Audrey for the WIGS YouTube channel. In 2001, Thomas won the Dorothy Arzner Directors Award of the Women in Film Crystal + Lucy Awards, presented by the Los Angeles chapter of the Women in Film Organization --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/intuitivefilmmaker/message

Credits montage of shady dealings, all very well told without a word of dialogue. The back story, the Fuchs brothers seem to hate each other, they have car dealerships across from each other. Inspired by the less-than-inspiring new BAYWATCH movie, we consider the strange alchemy that is the cheesy-TV-show-to-feature-film adaptation, via one of the genre’s standout entries: Betty Thomas’ 1995 spoof THE BRADY BUNCH MOVIE. In this half of the discussion, we debate how essential knowing the source material is to the BRADY BUNCH MOVIE’s comedy, which of the many standout Brady performances reigns supreme, and whether the film’s moments of slapstick add anything to a movie that thrives on a very different strain of humor. Plus, some feedback from recent episodes.
