In this episode, you'll also hear:How John's background as a radio announcer, pastor, and writer prepared him for the platform he would eventually build onlineWhy a major publisher took note of John's online presenceWhy John says writing a good book is only the first half of an author's workWhat John discovered about his own internal dialogue that inspired both a book and supplemental materialsJohn's advice for the writer who feels like giving up for lack of visible results Experience as a Training GroundFrom pastor and church planter to author to podcaster, John Stange wears many creative, ministry-related hats. Many of those pursuits, however, didn't start out as branches of his ministry. Instead, they trace back to his childhood dream of becoming a radio announcer. His first full-time pastoring position was located near a Christian radio station, so when John learned that the station was hiring, he applied despite not being experienced in the field. He was hired, and even received on-the-job training to develop skills in speaking, broadcasting, and editing digital content – all things he could later use as a podcaster, speaker, and more. “I really didn't see the long thread of how the Lord was going to use that,” John says in retrospect. “But it definitely factored into some of the things that I'm doing now.”John's story is an important reminder of how God can use our present experiences as a training ground for things to come. We can only see what's right in front of us, so we must learn to trust that God is a good Father, and that His ultimate plans and purposes for us are good – even when we don't understand them. Like his dream of becoming a radio announcer, John's desire to write a book had been around for a while by the time he actually put one together and self-published it. Even then, it was several more years before he started self-publishing more content and building an audience. Between self-publishing and voiceover work – something else he learned at the radio station – John was able to support his family through financially difficult seasons of church planting. As John's online platform and audience continued to grow, he eventually started up a website to house his various creative endeavors. “That's what ultimately caught the attention of a major publisher, when they saw that this was multifaceted,” he explains. “But this developed over the course of many years, and I had no idea that this would result in a traditional publishing deal. As I felt led to work on one particular thing, I worked on it. And then I added the next piece as I felt led to do it. And then, before I knew it, I could step back and look, and there's a whole kind of system here in place, almost like its own media channel.”Marketing = RelationshipsAs John has learned, cultivating a relationship with your audience is crucial. In fact, marketing is more similar to everyday relationships than you might think! It doesn't happen overnight, but when you put in the work to build relationships and consistently put out valuable content, eventually all those pieces come together. “A lot of times people think that the work of an author is just to write a good book,” John says. “And that's the first half. And then the second half is actually letting people know that the book exists. Because you could write good content, but if no one knows about it, no one's going to read it.” Like many aspiring authors, John says he used to hate the idea of marketing. He didn't want to annoy people or push them away. But over time he learned that marketing – when done well – isn't annoying. It's an opportunity to share the message you're passionate about. When you truly care about your message and the difference it can make in people's lives, and when you've taken the time to cultivate relationships with the audience who needs to hear that message, marketing becomes less of a chore and more of simply being excited to tell people about the message God has given you. Preach to Your Own HeartOne message John is passionate about can be found in his book Dwell on These Things, which is all about managing one's mindset to line up with what God says instead of the negative things we tend to tell ourselves. John says the inspiration for this book came from his own experience in ministry. As a pastor, he noticed a gap between what he was preaching to his congregation and what he was preaching to his own heart. “From the pulpit, I would encourage my congregation to understand who they are in Christ and find their sense of identity in Christ. And then a lot of times, after I'd preach a message, I would be very critical of myself,” he says. “When I look at Scripture, it tells us that Satan is the accuser of the brethren. And I thought, ‘Wow, my internal dialogue sounds a lot like accusation.'”As John worked on aligning his self-talk with the truth of God's word, he realized that he wasn't the only person who could benefit from this message. So he started writing. He also shared his idea with an agent, and ultimately the book was picked up by a major publishing house. And, in addition to the book, this publisher helped John develop a companion product: a set of inspiration cards summarizing the book's key ideas. More than just a second product to sell alongside the book, these cards make it easy for people to grasp the message and apply it to their daily life. Stick With ItJohn's story is a powerful reminder that achieving our dreams is a journey. It does not happen overnight – often, we have to take baby steps all along the way. But eventually, if we keep at it, we'll end up exactly where God wants us to be. That's why, if you're frustrated with where you are on your journey right now, John advises you to persevere. After all, God uses all sorts of people to accomplish His purposes – so why shouldn't you be one of them?Instead of comparing your progress to someone else's, remember that success takes time and consistency. When John started his podcast, he only received about 10 downloads – but today that number has multiplied to several million! So don't give up if you don't see results right away. You might have to keep at it for a few years, but eventually you will start to see the results of your efforts. “Stick with it one day at a time,” John says in closing. “Be faithful to the tasks the Lord has given to you, and do it for a period of years. And then step back and look at where He brings you. I think He'll surprise you.” BIO:John is a follower of Jesus, husband to Andrea, and father to four great kids. John's Bio:“John is the only financial advisor you'll ever meet who's managed over $3 billion and a sushi kitchen.”That's what it says on my public relations bio at least, and I'd bet it's true. My path to financial planning was neither straightforward nor easy. That winding road gave me a unique and valuable perspective on investing and life. After working through the crucible of the 2008/9 financial crisis, I decided to take a page from Monty Python... “And Now for Something Completely Different.” In 2010 I opened Rold Rite Sushi, a wholesaler of fresh sushi and other Asian foods to the trade. I grew the business until I sold it in 2015 to take on the most important job of my life to date, as a stay-at-home dad. When my son entered school, I knew I wanted to return to finance. This time I have a selfless desire to help people that I learned by working in the food business. Food service workers want to make people feel better. I want to share knowledge and wisdom that can help folks better prepare for the future. I want my clients to feel better and worry less about their future because they have a plan for it.I spent decades on Wall Street. I traded and designed some of the most complex bonds ever seen. Then I managed massive portfolios for large institutions. I learned two important lessons from that time.First, the more complex the investment, the greater its costs.Second, the greater its costs, the worse it performs. For investors, simple is better than complex. Einstein said, “Everything should be made as simple as possible, but not simpler.” My mission is to give you more simplicity and less complexity – in both investing and in life.John's Social: Twitter: @StojBojhttps://www.linkedin.com/in/johnstoj/Music in this episode obtained from Bensound

Think & Grow Rich: $5 Million, 12 Minute a Day SECRET Take away: Defining what you want is a major step towards living the life you want. Action step: Google what percentage of your daily actions are conscious and see what comes up. Then think about how it impacts your life. Money Learnings: Growing up in a middle-class family, they did not have a lot of money. Bio: John's story is pretty amazing. After spending 20 years as an entrepreneur, John was 50 years old but wasn't as successful as he thought he should be. To rectify that, he decided to find the “top book in the world” on SUCCESS and apply that book literally Word for Word to his life. That Book is Think & Grow Rich. The book says there's a SECRET for success, but the author only gives you half the secret. John figured out the full secret and a 12 minute a day technique to apply it. When John applied his 12 minute a day technique to his life, he saw his yearly income go to over $5 million a year, after 20 years of $200k - 300k per year. The 25 times increase happened because John LEVERAGED himself by applying science to his life. His daily technique works because it focuses you ONLY on what moves the needle, triples your discipline, and consistently generates new business ideas every week. This happens because of 3 key aspects of the leveraging process. John's technique was profiled on the cover of Time Magazine. He teaches it at the University of Texas' McCombs School of Business, which is one of the TOP 5 business schools in the country. He is also the “mental coach” for the head athletic coaches at the University of Texas as well. In the episode, “A Discussion On Psychosis, Lived Experience, and Creativity with Artist John F. Gerrard, Author of "We Make Clocks, Not Time" (S3, E12), John opens the conversation about this largely misunderstood headspace by sharing his personal story and what he learned coming out on the other side of psychosis. We discuss John's book, We Make Clocks, Not Time: My Lived Experience with Psychosis, Creativity, and the Ideas That Have Helped Me, opening up the conversation on an array of philosophical questions regarding psychosis and mental illness, from self-determination and free will, to the romanticization of the tortured artist, to the essential self, to the language of labels, to rethinking God.With the message that there is no shame in psychosis, that lived experience matters, and that creativity can be an integral part of our mental health, John also discusses some strategies that have worked for him in his own recovery. Describing psychosis as connecting to something larger than life, John harnesses elusive topics like what is the nature of delusion, the mystery of dreams, and the subtle differences found in psychotic experiences compared to those that are spiritual in nature. John brings philosophy into the conversation about extreme mental states and stresses that just because something is not commonly experienced among the norm, doesn't make it pathological.Bio:John is a multidisciplinary artist, with a focus on visual art. In his teens and 20s he was active creatively as a musician, touring across North America and playing locally. He also did graphic design work for bands and small businesses. John was trained by the Canadian Mental Health Association as a peer support worker. Since then, he's been developing his art practice with mental health advocacy work. He has also worked with Branch Out Neurological Foundation, making images based on interactions with neuroscientists, and taking part in their charity events for three years now. In 2019 he had my first international show in Chicago as a part of the Some People Everybody exhibition. This multidisciplinary project examines the ethics, people, processes, and systems that constitute the maintenance of, and barriers to, health for human beings. BIO: John is on a mission to unlock growth in people, businesses, and communities to help them go from where they currently are to where they want to be. STORY: John believed in what people said about him. This caused him to lose his greatest strengths—energy, youthful exuberance, and creativity. LEARNING: Explore who you truly are and then build on that. Age should not stop you from dreaming big. “Whether we want to believe it or not, we are needed. No matter what you are, you're someone's idol, whether you know it or not.”John Osberg Guest profilehttps://www.linkedin.com/in/johnnyosberg/ (John Osberg)'s life mantra is “Serve to Soar.” John is on a mission to unlock growth in people, businesses, and communities to help them go from where they currently are to where they want to be. Worst investment everJohn's worst investment ever was investing in what others thought of him. He let these opinions take over his inner voice and form his identity. He believed people when they told him that he was too young to know enough. John let such things dim his energy, youthful exuberance, and creativity. Yet, these are some of his greatest strengths. It took him about nine years and a lot of soul searching to finally realize that other people's voices should not have a place in his mind. Lessons learnedIf you're good enough, you're old enough. Age should not stop you from dreaming big. The time is here and now. If you take your shot and miss, well, at least you took the shot, and you'll learn from making that mistake. Andrew's takeawaysLearn how to form your own ideas and formulate opinions without opposing everybody. Explore who you truly are and then build on that. Actionable adviceIf you're struggling to find your true identity, call your inner circle and ask them what they think of you as a person and a professional. Write those descriptive words down and then look at them later. Ask yourself which of these descriptive words align with you, and then start to ingrain that in your brain. With time, they become your norm. MLOps Coffee Sessions #67 with John Crousse, ML Stepping Stones: Challenges & Opportunities for Companies co-hosted by Adam Sroka. // Abstract In this coffee session, John shares his observations after working with multiple companies which were in the process of scaling up their ML capabilities. John's observations are mostly around changes in practices, successes, failures, and bottlenecks identified when building ML products and teams from scratch. John shares a few thoughts on building long-term products vs short-term projects, on the important non-ML components, and the most common missing pieces he sees in today's ecosystem. John also elaborates on how those challenges and solutions can differ for different company sizes. // Bio John always liked CS/ML/AI but wasn't such a hot topic back then. He found opportunities to work on models in the Financial industry as a consultant from 2007 to 2017 then he went freelance to move outside of the financial industry, and focus on AI/ML. John likes to do things efficiently, and MLOps is the bottleneck, so he ended up spending more time on MLOPs than models lately. John and Leia discuss important considerations for approaching work with psychedelics, such as managing expectations, setting intentions, being open and allowing of experience, trusting the value of what comes up and trusting the process, working with disappointment, sliding back into old patterns post-experience, coming back to ourselves in honoring and accepting where we are, recognizing the non-linearity of psychedelic healing and transformation. We touch on the larger structures that we live in, the times we are in today, and how those can make it difficult to integrate and be fully integrated in ourselves. That metamorphosis can be painful, but is also part of a larger process of becoming more beautiful and full. Becoming empowered and standing up for what we believe in. The topic of becoming more whole comes up, through integration in ourselves and in the collective. John speaks to the value of integrity, developing our character, being responsible and honest, especially as we hold space for others. Psychedelics can help us connect to the deepest sense of self, seeing hard truths, welcoming them and integrating them. John talks about his upcoming course, R/Evolution, a deep dive for psychedelic explorers who want to develop, expand and deepen their practice and make the most of their experiences. Bio: John is a psychedelic explorer, activist, and guide. His work focuses on access, empowerment, and community – and his current mission is to spread the wondrous gifts of psychedelics by helping people learn how to use them effectively. I am always learning many things, all the time - still learning. Some things I keep learning over and over - kind of implying I'm not bloody learning them at all. And then there are ones that I learn again and again but in a new way or on a new level, almost. One of those is this: man, as individuals and as a society we need the wisdom, experience, insight, and practises of elders; those people advanced in age (perhaps) but sage in themselves and experienced in those years. For the longest part of human history - up until the global expansion of the agricultural age on one new level and then the dawn of the industrial age on an all-new, and almost entirely eradicating new level, we were a species that lived in small tribal bands and communities where young, old, babies and elderly, couples and families lived in close quarters, everyone had a role, everyone had a purpose. One of the central roles to a healthy, functioning and mature - initiated - society was the role of the elder; the people who could guide not only the youth, but those entering into marriage and parenthood and slowly taking over the majority of the responsibility of the community. Elders would initiate the young, pass on wisdom and knowledge, tell stories and share the lesson to life in myth and song, and cultural stories. They would sit with the young and facilitate respect, patience, grace, and humility. They were a crucial part of individuals growing into responsible adults, as well as the healthy functioning of the clan. Then BANG, we lose that, and widely present throughout most Western, and certainly European cultures, we don't have this. Instead, we have a generation of eldery, or ‘olders, perhaps. We have lost the respect and reverence for the wisdom in our older generation, instead, they have been taught to chase the solo life of retirement and end of life fulfilment, turning away from the role, while the rest of us happily shove them to the corner of our psyche and our society, into the care homes and minimum security prisons, as Jerry Seinfeld once called retirement homes. We have lost the role and importance of true elders unless individuals choose to follow that path. They exist, but it's not really a self-appointed tag. As one elder I admire and follow, Francis Weller, says: “Eldership comes about when the youth come for something” - because this is something have been pondering - ‘ how do we create more elders when they are limited, we just have old people and they never had elders bringing them through and showing them the way? And now I get it - we, the ‘youth' create this by going to those people and asking for something; guidance, support, wisdom, insight, initiation. In this Episode: This was evident to me in meeting and chatting in this episode with today's guest, John Moulang. I'm not entirely sure if john would agree with my summation here, but we do get into it in this episode. As we do his own story in parts. While he has quite the introduction in being captured, poisoned, raped, and even being in a coma, we don't spend too much time in those stories. After all, in one short podcast, episode, while it might be entertaining to hear those stories, we are here to learn some insight from him, and as John so wisely put it, not everyone gets access to your full story until they earn the right. That's what sitting with elders can do; impart little gems like this while also earning the right to the deeper stories and lessons. We also discuss elements of the shadow and men's work that john has been heavily influential in over the years. I suspect I personally will have many more conversations with John over the years, and perhaps record one or two so that we can learn from him and other elders like him (just don't expect him to call himself an elder, as I won't call myself a ‘legend' - just make a podcast with that title as something to strive a life towards ;-) ) As always, if you have questions about it - ask me. A challenge for people with promising ideas is to have someone believe in their work and offer the first grant. Philanthropy has the freedom to provide this risk capital, and small foundations excel in early-stage funding, backing ideas that later attract the attention of large foundations and government. Give them a visual that will help define their goal.Cultivate connections and alignments among team members to drive them towards a common goal.Establish a feedback loop of data to inform the team of what is - or isn’t - working with a debrief process.Key Quotes:“Any elite person, anyone in business in life, has this ability to focus, this mental toughness. So how do you block out distractions? How do you focus down on what's important? That's why data's so important. What do I need to know? Okay, got it. Focus down.”“Here's the beautiful part: it's not just about you, it's about the team. It's this beautiful combination of personal mastery of excellence, and then connection to your teammates, alignment, commitments, and these high trust contracts.”“You need to have the mindset first. I call that mindset “Glad to be here,” which is the ethos of being grateful and appreciative to have the opportunity. But also to bring in your operational excellence. You've got to earn the right to be there every single day. And that's how I felt on the Blue Angels.”Bio:John is a former lead solo pilot of the Blue Angels, Sloan Fellow at Stanford School of Business, a bestselling author and an expert in high-performance teams. John Kesler, proponent of individual and collective flourishing, Founder of the Integral Polarity Practice Institute, Founder of the nonprofit Salt Lake Global Civil Network, and “recovering” attorney. In a time of deeply divided politics, how can we find a way to include and transcend two opposite poles, two contending points of view? In this conversation, John Kesler presents his Integral Polarity Practice (IPP) as a practice that calls us to transcend the ego, access our compassion, and reach a higher self. IPP allows us to access a place where we see that opposite poles are actually different qualities of the same thing. When we become aware of polarities, both individually and collectively, and work with them, we can begin to see the relevance of each pole, see the dynamics between the poles, and learn to hold both poles simultaneously. This, in turn, enables us to stretch beyond our current patterns that no longer serve us. This powerful practice is relevant for our own self-development, for relationships, in organizations, in coaching, and in leadership. And, Kesler invites us to consider how it is also crucial in politics. Democracy is in danger when those in power are not aware of how to expand their perspective to include both poles. To be more collaborative and generous, to get things done, we need to access a level of maturity that can move beyond polarities. Bio: John has developed and shares widely an integrally informed awareness and life practice called Integral Polarity Practice (IPP). He was a founding teacher of the Integral Spiritual Center. Mr. Kesler founded and is president of the global Salt Lake Civil Network, a nonprofit which is dedicated to integrally informed approaches to local/global, and personal/collective transformation. He was a founding member of the Integral Institute and has had extensive experience in the in the areas of community flourishing and other areas of social and political activism and reform. John graduated from Columbia University Law School. He has practiced law for over 40 years in America, Europe and Asia.
