Did Big Love get it right? In this video, we dive into episodes 2-5 of Big Love and break down how the show portrays Utah culture, mainstream Mormonism, and FLDS polygamy. We compare the Henrickson family's version of plural marriage—living "the principle" without religious ties—to real-world polygamous groups. From secrecy and jealousy to the complexities of multiple wives, we'll separate fact from fiction and share insights from our own experiences. Let's talk about what Big Love nailed, what it missed, and how polygamy actually works in these communities!Chapters:00:00:00 Analyzing "Big Love": Representation of Utah and Mormon Culture00:05:13 Understanding Utah's Mormon Culture 00:09:49 The Significance of Garment Lines in Mormon Culture00:14:56 Seminary and Utah Culture 00:20:11 Experiences of Fasting in FLDS vs Mainstream LDS Church 00:25:32 Origins of the Garment in LDS and FLDS 00:30:54 The Complexity of Belief and the Role of Women 00:36:23 The Complexity of Freedom and Obedience00:41:33 Exploring Jealousy and Relationships in Polygamous MarriagesJoin our NEW Patreon HERE: https://patreon.com/growingupinpolygamyIf you or someone you love has left polygamy and needs assistance, please reach out to "Holding Out HELP" at 801-548-3492 or visit their website at www.holdingouthelp.orgAt Growing Up In Polygamy our mission is to "Create compassion for communities that have been misunderstood, marginalized and/or abused by their leaders, and to empower those who have left by giving them a platform to share their stories with the world."If you would like to DONATE to this cause you can do so here: https://donorbox.org/growing-up-in-polygamyInsta: @growingupinpolygamyNew website is now up! www.growingupinpolygamy.comTheme Song created by @artcowles Please feel free to reach out to us!growingupinpolygamy@gmail.com✅SUBSCRIBE NOW : https://shorturl.at/inqrE#like #comment #post #share and #encourage other to #subscribe to the channel #BigLove #MormonCulture #FLDS #Polygamy #UtahLife #ExMormon #RealityCheck #mormon

Chatting With Sherri welcomes author and Writers of the Future Grand Prize Winner, David K. Henrickson! David Henrickson has been in love with science fiction since he was nine years old. He still remembers turning a corner in his local library and seeing rack upon rack (okay, three racks) of juvenile science fiction, which fired his imagination and transported him to strange new worlds. Unlike other boys his age, he never developed an obsession with cars or other such pedestrian forms of travel. If it couldn't take him to other worlds, out of the solar system, back in time, or to another dimension, he just wasn't interested. During college, he won several writing awards and later received a scholarship to the Clarion Science Fiction and Fantasy Writer's Workshop. Dave has a background in oceanography, engineering, and computer science, but always wanted to be an artist. Or maybe a dancer. These days he lives in Virginia and spends his free time reading, writing, and killing monsters with his wife, Abbie. Dave has also written a number of novels he hopes might even get published one of these days. This was recorded in May but due to some tech difficulties which we overcame we are broadcasting tonight!

In this interview with Jeremy Henrickson, VP Product and Engineering @ Rippling, we discuss hiring at startups, the importance of making decisions quickly while still considering that I might be wrong, and what it takes to be a great engineering leader. Jeremy Henrickson VP Engineering & Product @ Rippling shares how to align, lead and scale a combined engineering and product organization! You’ll learn about the common tension points while scaling, different ways to structure your org, when to combine your orgs vs. split, and how to realign your teams when expectations get out of sync. Plus how to build credibility with new teams and acquire product skills as an engineering leader! “When I have like a number of teams and each of them has like a product leader AND an engineering leader... the expectation that I set with them is like, "Look, you guys are gonna have different points of view. And that's okay. But when you come to me, you either need to one, have a really clear, shared point of view on something, because you've gone into this together and have thought it out. Or a clear point of disagreement, so that you know, we can tie break on, okay, which one of these is actually more important right now?" And either one of those is totally fine. But a shared understanding of the facts, a shared understanding of the trade-offs is sort of the floor that I draw on those conversations.” JEREMY HENRICKSON, VP PRODUCT & ENGINEERING @ RIPPLING Jeremy Henrickson is responsible for scaling a world-class engineering team across two continents. Previously as Chief Product Officer at Coinbase, he oversaw 5x growth of the product and engineering organization and transformed a scrappy startup into a global cryptocurrency platform with millions of users. Are you like me and you’ve been wondering why massed trials seem to be the most popular format for discrete trial training? Ever think that there could be a better way? Lucky for you, this week we’re using research to pit massed trials head-to-head against other DTT formats in a knock-down, drag-out cage match for the ages. Will interspersed trials cause a big upset? Can distributed trials make it to the final round? Or will massed trials dominate all comers? Big Love was a show with an unlikely premise which became an even more unlikely network hit and one of HBO's juggernauts. Hunter Kaiser + Randy Fiser Today in The Lounge, Nick interviews, Hunter Kaiser, owner of the interdisciplinary design firm, H K+C, followed by a chat with Randy Fisher, CEO of ASID. Learn about Hunter's nonlinear journey to creating his own firm and his tips for growing and maintaining his business. Then stay tuned for updates on Randy and Nick's collaboration at KBIS in January. The Early Years Hunter Kaiser enjoys a Saturday brunch, the local farmers market, and visits to the lake. As a child, he found himself often moving around. Then in high school, his parents built a home in New Hampshire and hired an interior designer. This was his first face to face exposure to interior design. Although he was interested in in the process, he wasn't interested in pursuing design. Instead, he spent his first year in college taking science and math courses as a pre-med major. This all changed by his sophomore year when he transferred to Indiana University where he ultimately received his degree in Interior Design. After college Hunter worked at Grisworld, Heckle and Kelly, an architecture firm which has now been purchased by Nelson, and focused on corporate interiors in the financial sector. After working for GHK for 5 years, Hunter transitioned to a job in sales at Henrickson, an Allsteel dealer in Chicago, his hometown for the past 17 years. Upon leaving Henricken, Hunter spent an additional 5 years in furniture sales as an Architecture and Sales rep for Herman Miller. Then in 2011, with one client in the book, Hunter left Herman Miller to start his own company. Although his path was somewhat nonlinear, Hunter credits his experience in furniture sales as the key to get him to where he is today. His career journey ultimately taught him how to run a business. At Henricksen, Hunter had the opportunity to be an entrepreneur but with the support of the company to back him up. Alternatively, at Herman Miller he learned how to cultivate relationships and how to quickly read an audience. He still utilizes these skills in the day to day operations of running his business. Starting The Firm When Hunter left Herman Miller in 2011, he walked straight into a design meeting for his new business. With a lean staff of 2, his company works both nationally and globally with clients in Australia, Paris and across the United States. Their main focus is restaurants, retail and residential, using a holistic design approach, graphics, branding, and client experience. In the beginning, the firm started out doing wedding events and designing store windows for clients. Working on weddings enabled his company to focus on lifestyle and experience. Hunter had control of everything from the look and feel to the floral arrangements. As the company expanded into retail and restaurants, they continue to maintain this holistic approach, curating the customer experience and focusing on the details. (Click me!) Maintaining Growth Hunter attributes their continued growth to the layers of deep relationships they have built over the years. Reputation has been vital, as their design community is small. Not only is personal reputation important, but also the reputation of others within the design network. When a project is located in a city where the staff has never been, Hunter relies on his national network of designers to inquire about local contractors or installers, vendors and receiving warehouses for large deliveries. The strength of their reputation and consul provides him with trusted local contacts to successfully execute the project demands. He also credits speaking in front of people, networking, and social media to maintain a continual client base. Due to their continued growth and focus on a holistic design approach Hunter has rebranded his company from Hunter Kiser, LLC to HK+C. In looking back at the last 5 yrs of business, he realized the team wasn't just about him and wanted to celebrate all talents.

Today, at age 57, he leads America’s 5th largest bank as Chairman and CEO of U.S. Bancorp – parent company of U.S. Bank. Headquartered in Minneapolis, U.S. Bancorp has over $410 billion in assets and businesses across the United States, Canada and Europe, including over 3,000 full-service banking offices and 5,000 ATMs in 25 states. This traditional bank model is now also the foundation for active innovation. U.S. Bank appointed its Chief Innovation Officer, Dominic Venturo, a decade ago (I highly recommend following Dominic on Twitter @innov8tr). They are active in payments technologies, and the holding company owns Elavon, which recently opened a mobile innovation center in Atlanta called “The Grove” focused on “new technologies that enable merchants to accept payments via mobile devices while also ensuring the ease of use and safety of the transaction from the customer’s perspective.” Richard’s leadership earned praise through the financial crisis and its aftermath, including being named “2010 Banker of the Year” by American Banker. The father of three adult children and with three grandkids, he is highly active in civic efforts and philanthropy, including serving on the boards of the Twin Cities YMCA, Minneapolis Art Institute, University of Minnesota Foundation, and National American Red Cross, among many others. He has been the recipient of the President’s Lifetime Volunteer Service Award, while U.S. Bancorp and its employees earned the 2011 Spirit of America Award, the highest honor bestowed on a company by United Way. The company also received the 2013 Freedom award, the U.S. Department of Defense’s highest award for employers for supporting employees who serve in the National Guard and Reserve. In 2011 Richard received the Henrickson’s Award for Ethical Leadership. In 2015, U.S. Bank was named as a World’s Most Ethical Company by the Ethisphere Institute, the global leader in defining and advancing the standards of ethical business practices. In my conversation with Richard, he wove together all these themes of business, innovation, and ethics. More than any of our guests thus far, he voices a full-throated faith in the future of retail bank banking -- including branches in lower-income communities. At the same time, he speaks thoughtfully about the need for innovation in the branch and beyond (while warning against falling in love with every new idea). He also offers concrete advice for regulators on how to assure that innovation can flourish. And he talks inspiringly about the need for banks to rebuild the public’s trust in them, one customer at a time. He says customers are “the banks’ to lose,” and that, “If it’s good for the industry, it is probably worth doing.” Richard’s perspective is an invaluable contribution to our search for better consumer financial solutions. Speaking from the vantage point of a lifelong banker at the helm of one of America’s largest and most successful banking companies, he shares his thinking about what to keep and what to change, as the industry and its customers face continuous change. Continuing our discussions with media arts "professional", this week's conversation is with Mark Henrickson. I first met Mark as a performer at the Spark Festival, and I have had the pleasure of performing with him on several occasions. But I also knew that he was active in the show production world - which these days involves multi-channel audio, amazing lighting rigs and projection-mapped video. So I wanted to talk to Mark about how he meshes this professional life with his personal artistic work, and how he uses influences in one area to open doors in the other. I think this discussion gives a unique view into the background of a pro, but also provides some insight into the development of a personal artistic practices that is unique, recognizable and interesting. Enjoy!
