In an increasingly online, social media saturated landscape, Cal Newport has worked to disconnect almost completely. Cal is the Provost's Distinguished Professor of Computer Science at Georgetown University. In addition to his academic research, Cal writes about the intersection of culture and digital technology. He is the author of multiple books, including the NYT Bestseller Digital Minimalism, the WSJ Bestseller Deep Work, and So Good They Can't Ignore You, which tackles how people can truly do something they love in their career. He also delivered a TEDx Talk, “Quit Social Media” which was been viewed nearly six million times on YouTube. On this classic episode, Cal joined host Robert Glazer on the Elevate Podcast in his first appearance to talk about stepping back from an increasingly digital world, why “follow your passion,” is bad career advice, and more. It's easy for Summer to get busy, and then for good things to crowd out the best things. Today we discuss setting summer priorities, and Cal Newport's encouragement that:   1. We must limit ourselves to a max of three priorities  2. We delegate, or relegate, non-priorities (even awesome ones)  3. Plan a max of 1 priority event each day In doing this we allow ourselves the space to faithfully act on what God has called us to do, and leave space and bandwidth to be present for all God has for us this summer.Show Notes: https://bit.ly/4nwpG6m

What happens when you've optimized everything… and growth still stalls? In this episode, Dan and Ian break down a powerful distinction most founders miss: the difference between optimization (making your business run smoother) and growth (finding and testing new paths to scale). They unpack insights from Growth Levers by Matt Lerner, a framework that helped PayPal and other startups unlock massive growth and why it still applies to bootstrappers today. You'll also get a behind-the-scenes look at how Dan and Ian run operations in under 5 hours per week using the “Four Bricks”: financials, a measured plan, individual scorecards, and pulse meetings (aka the Daily Huddle). Plus: why growth experiments often fail, how to avoid optimization creep, and how interviewing your customers using the “Jobs to Be Done” framework can reveal the 10% that leads to 90% of your growth.

In this Shortcast edition, Cal Newport, author of Digital Minimalism: Choosing a Focused Life in a Noisy World, shares how we can reclaim our time and attention by taking control of our relationship with digital technology. Rather than rejecting tech entirely, Cal proposes a minimalist approach—using technology with intention and only when it supports what truly matters. In this Shortcast, we explore: Digital Minimalism Defined: Cal explains how minimalism isn't about abandoning tech, but using it selectively and purposefully to maximize benefit and minimize distraction. The 30-Day Digital Declutter: A key process in Cal's philosophy—taking a 30-day break from optional digital tools to reflect, reset habits, and rediscover values. Clearing the Slate and Starting Fresh: Cal encourages removing all non-essential apps and tools, then rebuilding your digital life from the ground up based on what serves your goals. Embracing Analog Life: Real-world activities like solitude, deep conversation, and hands-on tasks are vital for human well-being—and often lost in a screen-saturated culture. Mental Health and Focus: Cal highlights how overuse of screens increases anxiety and fragments focus, while digital minimalism promotes clarity, calm, and purpose. Cal's insights are a powerful reminder that the goal isn't to use less tech, but to use it better—with clarity, intention, and aligned values. Despite the fact that so many of them make it look easy, the daily lives of senior U.S. military leaders can be incredibly demanding. Laura Weimer examined how senior leaders manage their well-being (or, at times, struggle to do so) amidst these demanding careers, and she's in the studio with host JP Clark to share her discoveries. Drawing from her research, Weimer highlighted the unique pressures of senior roles, including frequent relocations, intense scrutiny, and the weight of consequential decisions. She also discussed the inevitable challenges of mid-life, such as caring for aging parents and navigating evolving family dynamics, which compound work-related stress. Weimer's key takeaway? Developing a strong sense of identity, meaning, and purpose is essential for fostering resilience and sustaining leadership effectiveness. I don't know if necessarily it's the Army's job to help us figure out our identity. I do think it would be valuable for the Army to acknowledge the value of those conversations and maybe even prompt those conversations.
