Acknowledgement of Country// Headlines// We listened back to sounds and speeches from the "Unite to Support the Refugee encampment" rally, a solidarity event held by the Refugee Action Coalition last Friday 16th August in support of refugees camping out in front of the Home Affairs office on Bourke Street in Docklands. The collective of refugees who initiated the encampment are demanding permanent protection from the government and have vowed to stay put until their permanent visas are granted, despite hostilities from police and local council and harassment and intimidation from neo-nazis. You'll hear organisers responding to confrontation by a small group of neo-nazis and speeches that resumed after the disruption by two refugee women from the encampment, Nagez and Rati. The Tamil Refugee Council, Unionists for Palestine and Campaign Against Racism and Fascism are organising another rally in solidarity with the encampment and against nazi attacks this Friday 23rd August from 5:30PM at 808 Bourke Street, Docklands.// Ishtar Hope, a North Branch delegate with the Renters and Housing Union (RAHU), joined us to recap the Housing Crisis Survival Expo protest which ran during National Homeless Week earlier this month and to discuss the importance of collective action as well as mutual aid in the struggle for housing justice, particularly for queer and trans people. Get your tickets for RAHU's Evict the Evictors fundraiser event this Saturday 24th August from 7PM at the Thornbury Bowls Club here, and check out Ishtar's political artworks by heading to @artfuldolebludger.// Shoshana and GG are members of Sicko Liberation Organism or S.L.O, a recently formed disabled/sick/mad led social and political group based in Naarm and working towards a future vision of liberation from all oppression and domination. On today's show, they speak about the Labor Hates Crips community picket organised by S.L.O. for 11AM today outside Bill Shorten's office at Suite 1A, 12 Hall Street Moonee Ponds to protest the federal government's rejection of the Disability Royal Commission recommendations and the ongoing exploitation and abuse of disabled people in so-called Australia.// Dr Alistair Sisson, Macquarie University Research Fellow in the Discipline of Geography and Planning, speaks with us about his current research into the calculation of housing stress in Australia. His current project, ‘The politics of housing data,' is a critical analysis of the ways that contemporary housing problems are quantified and how data is used to frame the housing crisis. Acknowledgement of Country// Headlines// Fighting for Banaba Part 3//Last week, Priya caught up with Professor Katerina Teaiwa and Itinterunga Rae Banteiti to discuss the colonial history of phosphate mining on Banaba and the fight by Banabans for reparations and an end to extraction. This conversation occurs in the context of a recent push by Australian mining company Centrex, which has sought to conduct phosphate prospecting activities on the island under the greenwashing premise of “rehabilitation.” This week, you will hear third segment a three-part interview with Katerina and Rae - listen back to parts 1 and 2 here.// Katerina is an interdisciplinary scholar, artist and award winning teacher of Banaban, I-Kiribati and African American heritage born and raised in Fiji. She is Professor of Pacific Studies in the School of Culture, History and Language, College of Asia and the Pacific at the Australian National University, and a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. Rae is of Banaban and Kiribati origins and was raised and educated in Fiji. Rae's environment and social justice work are linked to Kiribati people's histories and the extent of environmental degradation caused by extensive mining.// You can find the petition started by the Banaban community on Rabi Island, Fiji, which demands a defence of Banaban rights and the prevention of any further mining of the island, below. A few weeks ago, we had fellow CARF member Jasmine on to discuss this upcoming rally, but since then we've seen some successful anti-fascist resistance to attempted neo-nazi intimidation of a fundraiser event last Friday at Cafe Gummo in Thornbury. Today, Ellie will continue the discussion about the importance of broad-based anti-fascist resistance, let us know about the speak-out held this past Tuesday at Gummo, and remind listeners about details of the protest coming up this Saturday the 23rd of September, meeting at 2PM at the IGA in Sunshine West.// Dementia Action Week 2023//Maree McCabe AM, CEO and Board Member of Dementia Australia, joined us today for Dementia Action Week 2023, which runs from 18-24 September and includes World Alzheimer's Day on Thursday 21 September, to talk about stigma, discrimination, and lack of awareness of dementia. Recently, however, the Greens backflipped on withholding support for the Housing Australia Future Fund after getting a commitment for extra spending on social housing from the Labor government, reducing the pressure to introduce a rent cap. To discuss how this contributes to the housing stress faced by students, impacts federal housing policy and influences their campaigning in the future we were joined by National Union of Students' Education Officer Xavier Dupe. During the interview, Xavier mentioned the NUS Education Office's ‘Get A Room' campaign to fix the rental crisis - find out more here.// Building Community with Resident Frequency Recording Studio//Earlier this week, Spike caught up with Izzy Brown to congratulate her on the launch of the latest grassroots community project she has been involved in called the Resident Frequency Recording studio. Located at the old men's shed at 253 Hoddle St Collingwood, the Resident Frequency Recording Studio is an important local community controlled resource that should be celebrated, and Izzy spoke to us about its launch on Sunday September 17th, the importance of building free, safe and inclusive community spaces, and shared the local community's hopes to develop autonomous skillshare and mentoring programs from the Collingwood public housing estate site.//
Melbourne Antifa's tall stories of them chasing Nazis and the convenient narrative of the Russell Brand sexual assault allegations. Plus the latest voice referendum developments on Tim's News Explosion. Melbourne's Antifa claims they chased Nazis from a fundraiser they were holding at a cafe in Thornbury last Friday night. While 9News reported Antifa's version of events verbatim 7News was much more critical. The Campaign Against Racism and Fascism is planning another protest outside the National Socialist Network's (NSN) gym at Sunshine this Saturday. Victoria Police dropped charges of assaulting an officer against Jimone Roberts when they physically removed him and the NSN from Victoria's Parliament steps at their last rally. The mainstream media outlet that turned up to his recent court appearance instead reported on a speeding offence and driving while unlicensed. Dvir Abramovich of the Anti-Defamation Commission wants the West Australian Electoral Commission to ban Stephen Wells from running for Busselton local council as he describes himself as a “racist, sexist, democracy-scorning whites-lover”. Such a ban would be unconstitutional. Dvir has championed a Federal Court ruling that awarded $430,000 in compensation to five Jewish Brighton Secondary College students for being subjected to anti-Semitic bullying at the school. A joint Channel 4 and Times Newspaper investigation found four women to accuse Russell Brand of sexually assaulting them. Brand is a former sex addict who has slept with thousands of women. He was the darling of the mainstream media employed by Channel 4 and the BBC to host several shows and specials. But because he came out against the covid narrative and vaccines he longer has the protection of the mainstream media. A refund dispute between a Pakistani Hair and Cosmetic store owner and a black woman where she attempted to compensate herself off the shelf in Peckham, London has led to a Black Lives Matter protest outside the store. The BBC is teaching children fake history claiming that black people have been in Britain from the start of time. Yes to the Aboriginal Voice rallies took place across Australia on the weekend featuring musical performances. At the Melbourne Yes rally the Communist Party of Australia was seen marching. No to the Voice rallies will take place this Saturday Australia-wide. No campaigner Jacinta Price told the National Press Club that there is no ongoing negative impact of white colonization only positive. Voice architect Marcia Langton was filmed stating that the no campaign's arguments are either racist or stupid . Indigenous Australians Minister Linda Burney claimed she has been subjected to racism and bullying during the referendum campaign. Infowars reporter Owen Shroyer received a 60-day jail sentence for covering the events on January 6 outside the Capitol. HIV activists committed an insurrection inside Speaker Kevin McCarthy's office Will they be imprisoned for 20 years like the Proud Boys have? Kevin McCarthy has begun impeachment proceedings against Joe Biden over his role in his son Hunter's corrupt business dealings. The US Justice Department has charged Hunter Biden over lying on a gun application form. RINO Senator for Utah Mitt Romney announced he would not seek re-election in 2024 but83-year-old former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi will run again. The USFDA has approved new covid vaccine boosters as the fear campaign over the BA 2.86 Piora variant continues Canada's Chief Public Health Officer Theresa Tam and her team wore masks at a recent press conference. An outbreak of the Nipah virus in Southern India which is transmitted via bats has led to media fear reports about it being the next deadly global outbreak. Republican Louisiana Senator John Kennedy read out in a Committee explicit excerpts from the books Gender Queer and All Boys Aren't Blue. Democrats and Progressives it's a form of book banning if these books are not allowed to be in school libraries. Kellie Jay Keen has cancelled her return to New Zealand to attend the court hearing of Eli Rubashkyn the intersex person who poured tomato juice on her citing security concerns. Binary Australia Director Kirralie Smith successfully fought off an AVO put against her by trans soccer Riley Dennis who is playing in the Women's NSW league. Our guest this week is long-term socialist and ant-fascist activist Daniel Dadich. Daniel is a second generation migrant, a union delegate, a social worker and a proud socialist. He's lived in Melbourne his whole life and have experienced racist policing and harassment first-hand. He's been involved in political campaigns in Melbourne for more than 15 years and has been a candidate for the Victorian Socialists in three elections. In 2022 he ran in the federal seat of Maribyrnong and confronted the former Labor Party leader, and sitting member for Maribyrnong Bill Shorten about Labor's appalling stance on refugee rights while they were both campaigning at a pre-poll booth on Saturday 14 May. Part of their discussion was captured on camera by a VS volunteer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j3k-pYAGZxY Topics discussed include: Why he became involved in socialist politics. What the links between socialist politics and veganism are. What Victorian Socialists stand for and his experience of being a candidate. The Warrandyte by-election. The rise of the far right. The Campaign Against Racism and Facism and the neo-Nazi gym in Sunshine. And how people can get involved if they are interested. //Acknowledgement of Country////Headlines////We'll hear a segment of the For the Wild podcast, where host Ayana Young is joined by artist and writer James Bridle in a conversation that considers AI and multiple forms of intelligence. Looking at research into forms of intelligence, from artificial to mycelial, James posits that it is a critical failure to use human intelligence as the benchmark for all forms of knowing. James Bridle is an artist, writer and publisher whose work deals with the ways in which the digital, networked world reaches into the physical, offline one. For The Wild podcast is an anthology of the Anthropocene; focused on a paradigm shift away from human supremacy, endless growth and consumerism. Listen back to the full episode with James Bridle here.////We will hear part two of a pre-recorded interview with Meghan Fitzgerald from Fitzroy Legal Service about the coronial inquest into the passing in custody of Veronica Nelson. This weeks episode reflects on the "war on drugs", intersectionality, lived experience and findings from the Muirhead Royal Commission into aboriginal deaths in custody. A few weeks ago, we had fellow CARF member Amelia on to discuss CARF's planned protest against the National Socialist Network's "white power lifting meet" at the Legacy Boxing Gym in Sunshine West. Today, Jasmine will recap what went down on the day and talk about the importance of building a more sustained and widespread movement against anti-fascism in Melbourne, as well as tell us a bit about the protest coming up on Saturday the 23rd of September and how listeners can start getting prepared to attend.////Professor Nicholas Davis, Industry Professor of Emerging Technology at the University of Technology Sydney and co-Director of UTS' Human Technology Institute along with Professor Edward Santow, speaks with us about what it means to regulate the use of artificial intelligence in Australia, including the regulatory mechanisms we already have in place that pertain to AI. Earlier this week, Nicholas co-authored a Conversation piece with Edward Santow and Sophie Farthing, head of the Policy Lab at the Human Technology Institute, which provided further insights into the tech sector's backflip on regulation and the issue of enforcing both existing and future regulatory mechanisms in the face of increasingly widespread AI use across various sectors of Australian industry and society. The Human Technology Institute is a new initiative situated at UTS which aims to build Australia's capabilities around the ethical and responsible use of artificial intelligence.////JR from the Renters and Housing Union joins us to extend the conversations we had on the show during last week's Homelessness Week special, discussing RAHU's campaigns and advocacy work. We'll also get the chance to speak about what yesterday's housing announcements by national cabinet really mean, and touch on some of the negative impacts of property tech used by landlords and the real estate industry.//

Our conversation today comes in the wake of the tragic road death of another food delivery worker in Sydney over the past weekend, the 12th food delivery driver known to have been killed in Australia since 2017, though numbers are likely underreported. An April 2023 report by the McKell Institute documenting the experiences of over 1,000 transport gig workers in Australia has outlined pressing concerns faced by these workers regarding low pay, unstable working conditions, and workplace hazards - you can read it here. Since it's been raining news this week as we approach a La Niña summer a special midweek edition of Tim's News Explosion will take the temperature of our nation. After the record-breaking Melbourne Freedom Rally crowd on Saturday, another rally is taking place in the Melbourne CBD as part of the nationwide Millions March Against Mandatory Vaccinations and Passport. The anti-freedom protests organized by the Socialist Alternative front group the Campaign Against Racism and Fascism are not returning to the streets until Saturday 4th December. Their campaign to smear freedom protesters as a far-right racist fascist movement has been quite pathetic, to gain some traction they shared a photo of Neil Erikson videobombing one of Real Rukshan's livestreams. They have also despaired at the fact that their previous hero EggBoy Will Connolly is a regular attendee at freedom rallies. Three of Victoria's healthcare unions released a statement supporting Dan Andrews' Pandemic Management Bill as they still believe restrictions on freedom are good for the healthcare system. Victoria Police have confirmed they've found no evidence that Andy Meddick's daughter had a spray can thrown at her for political reasons. Northern Territory Chief Minister Michael Gunner's covid response and vaccine mandate has gone viral all around the world and further damaged Australia's international reputation. At the beginning of the week Gunner during an unhinged rant claimed anyone who doesn't support mandating vaccines is an anti-vaxxer. In response to covid outbreaks in remote Aboriginal communities, Gunner stated the ADF would be moving positive cases and close contacts to the Howard Springs quarantine camp, After this made international news Gunner went on another rant against 'tin foil hat wearing tossers'. WA Premier Mark McGowan has faced increasing protests against his vaccine mandates for the state's workforce. He has also smeared protestors against him as extremists who are causing increased threats against him, his family, and staff. Two young men were charged with leaving beheading threats on McGowan's phone. McGowan's continued cruel hard border policy saw a teenager receive a $5000 fine and lifetime driving ban as he drove through a WA border checkpoint in a desperate effect to see his dying mother after being knocked back for a travel exemption five times. It was a weekend of white pilling with justice prevailing in the United States with Kyle Rittenhouse found by a jury to have acted self-defence in killing two Antifa criminals in Kenosha last year. Back in Australia on Saturday hundreds of thousands of citizens around Australia marched as part of the Worldwide Rally for Freedom against lockdowns and mandates. Myself, Margo Huss and Andy Nolch reflect on this new hope for humanity on Tim's News Explosion. Melbourne's Worldwide Rally for Freedom on Saturday was the city's largest political demonstration ever, bigger than even any communist demonstration. 250,000-500,000 Victorians marched from Parliament House to Flagstaff Gardens. The crowd was so large that none of us could get close enough to hear the scheduled speakers. Andy Nolch conducted several livestreams throughout the day on the Unshackled's social media. Margo briefly filmed the small anti-freedom pro-mandates and pro-lockdown protest organised by the Socialist Alternative's Campaign Against Racism and Fascism (CARF). There already is a positive covid case linked to this rally, despite all attendees being double vaxxed and masked. Despite being billed as an anti-racist rally they viciously pushed out Avi Yemini and the Real Rukshan who were attempting to cover the rally. The Justice system in the United States is not dead yet after Kyle Rittenhouse was found not guilty of murder when he shot three Antifa criminals killing two and injuring one when he was defending his local town of Kenosha, Wisconsin during a BLM/Antifa riot in August last year. Kyle gave an exclusive interview to Fox News host Tucker Carlson stating that his case had nothing to do with race (he shot three white Antifa members but was slandered as a white supremacist by President Biden and the US media). A black career criminal Darrell E. Brooks has driven a car through a Christmas parade in Waukehsa, Wisconsin killing 4 and injuring 40 in a suspected Rittenhouse verdict revenge attack. The EFF has vowed to intensify its campaign against alleged racism at Brackenfell High School in the Western Cape. EFF members and parents of the school clashed over a private matric celebration organised by some parents which allegedly excluded black students. Western Cape Education Minister Debbie Schafer has warned that if the EFF continues its protest action she will approach the courts to interdict them from disrupting the Grade 12 examinations. Meanwhile President Cyril Ramaphosa has also condemned the incident and has called for an urgent investigation into allegations of racism at the school. He says all parties involved should exercise restraint and resolved the matter peacefully and through dialogue. We spoke to our reporter, Berenice Moss and Kerry Mauchline, spokesperson for the Western Cape Education MEC, Debbie Schäfer.
Tanvi Avasthi (@tanvicious) speaks with us today about narrative therapy, loss and trauma, and the power of asking "what do you want?" to recenter our patients as protagonists of their own lives. She explains how we can avoid pathologizing our patients and ourselves, and how we can resist the forces of white supremacy and capitalism which are attempting to destroy us and make us hate ourselves. She shows us a way of beautifully holding the humanity, justice, and poetry of healing together. SMOA producer Raghav Goyal joins this conversation as cohost. Tanvi holds masters degrees in Medical Anthropogy and in Nursing and currently works as an ER nurse in Batimore, and is a future Midwife and Women's Health Nurse Practitioner. In addition to her clinical work, she also has experience working as a doula and yoga instructor, and we know her through her work as one of the co-founders of the Campaign Against Racism, an activist group with chapters all around the world, that is using tools of restorative justice, narrative therapy, and community organizing to effect local and systems wide change. Joe Mulhall dives back into the HOPE not hate archive for the second in our new series, this time reading new work from Simon Murdoch looking at the Campaign Against Racism and Fascism, an important part of our movement. Simon investigates if the arguments between anti-racists and antifascists could better be resolved through a mutual understanding against the common enemy.
Tinashe Goronga (@tisaneg) discusses the impact of neoliberal policies on health outcomes. After describing what neoliberalism is and how it works, he connects how his patients' lives in Zimbabwe are influenced by these international and national systems. Michelle Morse (@michellemorse) discusses race and antiracism in medicine. Beginning with Camara Jones' metaphor of the Gardener's Tale, she helps to imagine how medicine can work for the good of all and how medicine can move past its entanglements with racist ways of thinking and acting. Michelle Morse MD MPH is a physician, organizer, and social medicine leader who has cofounded EqualHealth, the Social Medicine Consortium, and three residency programs at the Mirebalais University Hospital. She is an assistent professor at Harvard Medical School, a Robert Wood Johnson Health Policy Fellow, and is currently working on the global Campaign Against Racism. It is a huge week in housing this week after the detention of 3,000 public housing tenants has been announced and enforced by police in Victoria. Today Kevin and Meg kick off the show with an interview with Scott Stewart, a tenant from one of the 9 blocks in so-called "hard-lockdown", who is joined by Daniel Nair Dadich, Victorian Socialists Candidate for Deputy Lord Mayor of Melbourne. We discuss the online forum ("Public Housing Residents in Lockdown Speak Out"), co-hosted by Vic Socialists and Campaign Against Racism and Fascism, as well as Scott's lived experience in his Flemington high-rise flat. Next, we are joined by regular Shane McGrath from Housing for the Aged Action Group to chat about housing insecurity, anecdotes on a lack of real legal tenants protections, why there's no better time to join your union, and more. Lastly, we speak with Howard Marosi from Friends of Public Housing and Dr. Sam Lieblich, to take a look at housing insecurity as a direct cause for many psychiatric issues, classism, and how the immediate mobilisation and work of community-led organisations such as AMSSA have put DHHS to shame in supporting residents in the towers thus far.
In the early days of the Black Lives Matter movement, a group of internal medicine residents posed a question: What can we do about racial disparity within our institution? Brigham and Women’s Hospital’s Health Equity Committee decided to confront the status quo by asking: How is racism on a structural level present within our walls? Ankur Kalra’s guests Michelle Morse (Founding Co-Director of EqualHealth and Assistant Professor at Harvard Medical School) and Lauren Eberly (Cardiology Fellow at University of Pennsylvania) are co-authors of a retrospective study that demonstrated what had previously only been observed: That black or brown heart failure patients ended up in general medicine rather than specialised cardiology services. Following publication of the study in November 2019, the Health Equity Committee started to roll out anti-racism trainings and to work on objective admission guidelines to mitigate biased behaviours. Aarti Bhatt (Assistant Professor of Medicine at University of Minnesota), member of the Minnesota chapter of Campaign Against Racism, talks about their initiative to support projects that have positive impact on local communities on a global scale. Tune in to hear more about how you can be part of the Campaign Against Racism. Jordan Peterson, Canadian psychologist, Youtuber, public speaker and best selling author of the self help book ‘12 Rules to Life’, has cultivated a passionate - albeit mostly male - global fanbase. Peterson recently visited Australia for a tour of sold out shows and a high profile appearance on the ABC's Q&A program. However, his gender essentialism, views on morality and ethics and his individualistic wordview and advice have attracted substantial amounts of criticism. So how have his ideas circulated and been communicated in the media and in the public arena more broadly? Long time activist, writer and the media spokesperson for the Campaign Against Racism and Fascism (CARF) Chris Di Pasquale explains.

In this episode of Living the Dream Dave (@withsobersenses) chats with Kieran (@Kieran Bennett) about a recent Melbourne counter-rally to a Trump celebration rally ostensibly organised by #altright types and attended by local fascists and neo-Nazis. From here Kieran lets us know who is who in the fascist zoo in Australia, the social phenomena behind the far-right and we discuss what a relevant anti-capitalist practice might be that can defeat the fascists and offer a genuine emancipatory alternative to the issues that we all face. Kieran blogs at Kieran’s Review and is a member (of the perhaps soon to be rebranded) Anarchist Affinity Articles and things we refer to include: Angry Workers of the World Ghassan Hage – Recalling Anti-racism Ben Hillier – ‘All that is holy was profaned’: the year that was, and the politics we need (Ben recommends you also read ‘Post-truth politics’ isn’t peak populism, it’s peak liberal capitalism and suggests that my read of his argument is wrong.)
