This week, a Regular Car Reviews special report. Last year, I did an RCR Stories on the history of Cash For Clunkers, and how it ended up being a terrible idea, not just for the auto industry but for the used car market. And now, the word is that it could be coming back? What could this mean for the cars we love? The cars we have? And the cars we might want to buy someday? In a special RCR report, I take a look into who's in favor of another Cash For Clunkers program, what types of incentives could be offered for used cars, and why it's still probably not the best idea for saving the economy, much less the auto industry.

Cash for Clunkers (we were right), how big business kills good ideas (right again), how government involvement makes everything worse (right , right, right), and why the Lexus People from Orange County are a threat to San Diego. Moving right along, there's also reports from the 24 Hours of LeMans (it's Audi's fault), NASCAR racing at Sears Point (it's Kyle Busch's fault), why F1 is turning into the Twit Olympics (it's the Nazi's fault - what's his name? Untested host Justin Fort tried one of his rare solo appearances for this Garage Hour, completing an hourlong rant aimed at one of Barry O's first failures, the Cash for Clunkers program (which succeeded in very little beyond taking away good used cars from people who needed them). Between heady tirades about bad government, bad unions, bad deals for taxpayers and bad Clunkers math, this early Garage Hour also contains early Boris Said and road-racer worship, early emasculation of bankrupting fool Steve Saleen, early promos for Barona dragstrip, and early on-air fail and car crash humor for the Lambo flag in your life. Hangover How many summer hangovers can you handle? You may personally know your own limit, but now the country is about to find out just how many it can take. Over the past few months we've collectively already survived one in entertainment -- the popular hit comedy by the same name which grossed nearly $300 million domestically. Meanwhile, on the durable goods front we had the "Cash for Clunkers" program which sold nearly 700,000 cars and trucks. And now as it fades in the rearview mirror, experts are wondering just what will happen with automotive sales over the last four months of 2009. Will the public be suffering from "Clunker hangover" -- with no cash incentive to sweeten the deal will customers continue to visit dealerships and more importantly buy cars? That's one of the many sales questions that this week's Autoline experts grapple with. Joining host John McElroy on the panel are Rebecca Lindland from industry research giant IHS Global Insight, Keith Naughton from Bloomberg News and Drew Winter from Wards.com.

Today is a prime example of how quickly things change in our current economic environment! We recorded this show on Thursday afternoon, 07/30, and planned on releasing it Friday morning, 07/31. To our amazement, when we came into the office on Friday, one of the very topics we did the show on no more than 24 hours before was no longer in existence.
The 181st edition of America's Debate Radio with Mike and Jaime. During the first hour, we discussed healthcare legislation, voters' views on the Big 3 American automakers, the Cash for Clunkers program, and executive compensation legislation being considered in the House. We discussed the House healthcare legislation, State's debts, the Senate considering ending the military Don't Ask Don't Tell policy, global warming, online debate, the 2010 census, and the Senate's VOICE Act legislation providing funding to fight censorship in Iran. Is the government's new plan to pay people to trade in old, inefficient cars and trucks an environmental bane or boon? David Biello reports
March auto sales were released earlier this week and even though they were higher than February, sales were still off by over 30% from a year ago. On this edition of Autoline EXTRA John McElroy and his panel discuss what number the annualized sales rate needs to be for the industry to be profitable and when it’s expected to reach that number. Also discussed is the "Cash for Clunkers" proposal and whether or not that would help give auto sales a shot in the arm. Joining John in the discussion are John Stoll from the Wall Street Journal, Tom Walsh of the Detroit Free Press and Michael Robinet of CSM Worldwide.
