The Trombone Corner Podcast is brought to you by Bob Reeves Brass and The Brass Ark. Come watch the Los Angeles Brass Alliance (LAB-A) at 7PM on May 4th at Glendale First baptist Church for their second installation of Next Up! This free concert (generously sponsored by Bob Reeves Brass) spotlights LAB-A's annual collaboration between emerging LA-based composers and brass musicians.  Learn more at: www.labrassalliance.org. Join hosts Noah and John as they interview Michael Dease, commercial trombonist from Los Angeles. About Michael: Michael Dease is one of the world's eminent trombonists, lending his versatile sound and signature improvisations to over 200 recordings and groups as diverse as Grammy winning artists David Sanborn, Christian McBride, Michel Camilo, and Alicia Keys. Born in Augusta, GA, he played the saxophone and trumpet before choosing the trombone at age 17. In 2001, Dease moved to New York City to become part of the historic first class of jazz students at The Juilliard School, earning both Bachelors and Masters degrees, and quickly established a reputation as a brilliant soloist, sideperson, and bandleader.   Best Next Thing (Posi-Tone, 2022), Dease's newest release, his ninth on Posi-Tone, gathers together an assemblage of exceptional musicians to help him interactively explore the essence of the blues and reframe the abstract truths of jazz as the "Best Next Thing "for today's audience of listeners. Dease, the winner of the 69th Annual DownBeat Magazine Poll for Trombonist of the Year and multi-Grammy award winner, is also a sought-after lead, section and bass trombonist with today's leading jazz orchestras. His experiences include bands led by Christian McBride, Roy Hargrove, Nicholas Payton, Charles Tolliver, Rufus Reid, Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra and the Dizzy Gillespie All-Star Big Band. However, it is on the frontline of quintets and sextets led by master musicians like The Heath Brothers, Winard Harper, Renee Rosnes, Bill Charlap, Claudio Roditi, and Lewis Nash, where Dease has revitalized the trombone's image. Not content to simply improvise, Dease arranges and composes for many different bands, constantly adjusting his tone and timbre to add just the right flavor to the music. Dease's unique blend of curiosity, hard work and optimism has helped him earn worldwide recognition, including awards from ASCAP, The International Trombone Association, Yamaha, Eastern Trombone Workshop, New York Youth Symphony, Hot House Magazine, Michigan State University, among others. Dease was profiled in Cicily Janus' book, The New Face of Jazz: An Intimate Look at Today's Living Legends (Random House). His experience in the studio has led him to produce several recording sessions for emerging artists, often composing and writing liner notes for the releases. Dease's singular talent has made him an effective and prolific teacher, resulting in invitations, master classes and residencies at University of North Texas, Scranton University, University of Iowa, Florida State College, Broward College, and many institutions abroad. He serves as Professor of Jazz Trombone at the renowned Michigan State University jazz program and has also been on faculty at Queens College - CUNY, The New School and North-eastern University. Many of Dease's current and former students are enjoying successful careers in the music world. Always an informed, but forward-thinking musician, Dease learned the craft from trombone legends Wycliffe Gordon and Joseph Alessi. His associations have run the entire spectrum of musical experience: Alicia Keys, Paul Simon, Paul Schaffer and the CBS Orchestra, Elton John, Neal Diamond, Illinois Jacquet, Slide Hampton & The World of Trombones, Fred Wesley, Maceo Parker, WDR Big Band, George Gruntz, Billy Harper, and numerous others. Dease enjoys spending every possible minute with his extraordinary wife and Professor of Percussion at MSU, Gwendolyn Dease, and their daughters Brooklyn & Charley. Michael Dease is a Yamaha Performing Artist and uses Pickett Brass and Vandoren mouthpieces exclusively. Elliott explains that teaching as an adjunct allows him to interact positively with students and connect back to the mission of higher education. “So in a classroom I get to interact with students in a positive way, and it connects me back to what we're doing,” he continues. Teaching accounting reminds Elliott that the focus should be on changing students' lives.   Join us for a conversation with Elliott as he talks about transitioning from auditor to higher education administrator, solving hiring challenges, and why community colleges are often overlooked in the national media.   Links Check out NACUBO's other podcasts! The Spirit of Place Tim Gilmore is a prolific local history author who has written extensively about Jacksonville. As the writer and creator of www.jaxpsychogeo.com, a project that explores place and catalogs the Southern Gothic, he has told more than 700 stories of strange and historic locations in and around Jacksonville, Florida. He has also published 22 books. "Ever since UNF English Professor Alex Menocal introduced me to the concept of psychogeography years ago, I've been enthralled with it," Gilmore says. "It's a portmanteau word, the psychology of geography, [meaning] something like the spirit of place. It's where the name for my website, jaxpsychogeo, comes from." Gilmore seems equally fascinated with Jacksonville and its people. He is also the founder of JaxbyJax. A literary arts festival, now in its 10th year, JaxbyJax was built on the theme of “Jacksonville Writers Writing Jacksonville.” Few writers have written about Jacksonville more than Gilmore. He joined us last November to talk about his latest book, The Culture Wars of Warren Folks.  Tim Gilmore has written 22 books including Box Broken Open: The Architecture of Ted Pappas; Murder Capital: Eight Stories, 1890s-1980s; Channeling Anna Fletcher; Repossessions: Mass Shooting in Baymeadows; The Book of Isaiah: A Vision of the Founder of a City, illustrated by Shep Shepard; Devil in the Baptist Church: Bob Gray's Unholy Trinity; and The Mad Atlas of Virginia King. Four of the works he's written for the stage have been produced by Florida State College at Jacksonville DramaWorks and his writing has appeared in numerous publications both locally and nationally. JaxPsychoGeo has received mention in publications including The Miami Herald, The Washington Post and The New Yorker and was featured in the A24 book Florida! A Hyper-Local Guide to the Flora, Fauna and Fantasy of the Most Far-Out State in America. Gilmore teaches Literature and Writing at Florida State College at Jacksonville. He's received awards from FSCJ, the Cultural Council of Greater Jacksonville and Jacksonville City Council. He holds a Ph.D. in English from the University of Florida. You can also read his twice-weekly newsletter, Tim Gilmore's deadpaper, at timgilmore.substack.com. Interviewer Shep Shepard is a professor of English at FSCJ's Nassau Center. He received his Ph.D. in English from the University of Florida and has worked as a full-time instructor at FSCJ for twenty years. In his spare time, he produces music under various monikers, edits fiction and nonfiction prose, creates digital art, and enjoys time with his wife Ana and their dogs Meka and Moxie. READ Check out Tim's work from the Library Catalog: https://jkpl.ent.sirsi.net/client/en_US/default/search/results?qu=AUTHOR%3D%22tim+gilmore%22&te=  Tim Recommends: Pyschogeographical Works I've long been a huge Cormac McCarthy fan. I've assigned The Road to numerous classes over the years. Of all the McCarthy I've read, I most highly recommend The Road and two of his earlier novels: First, there's the 1973 novel Child of God, which somehow manages to be one of the most horrifying things I've ever read and one of the most beautiful. Few writers could achieve that strange incongruous feat, perhaps none better than McCarthy. Meanwhile, his 1979 novel Suttree paints as detailed a picture of down-and-out Knoxville, Tennessee, as Joyce ever painted of Dublin. It's perhaps the greatest American psychogeographical work. When I recently read John Oliver Killens' 1954 novel Youngblood, I couldn't believe I'd not read him already. This novel, alongside Harry Crews' newly reissued 1978 memoir A Childhood, has to be among the best writings ever to come out of Georgia. The two of them work like split-screen, a Black childhood and a white childhood, both so different and so similar. Both writers had ties to Jacksonville. Crews said mid-20th century Jax was the place poor Georgia farmers went when the crops failed. Various artists and writers have used psychogeography in different ways. I've returned time and again to my favorite such writings, which I can't recommend enough – novels like Peter Ackroyd's Chatterton and Hawksmoor and Toni Morrison's Beloved. On the face of it, Ackroyd and Morrison couldn't be more different, but they both explore how culture is haunted by history and how patterns of history present themselves as ghostly. Then there's Joseph Mitchell's Joe Gould's Secret, a nonfiction account of a homeless Greenwich Village icon who claimed to have written the longest book in the world. Tim Recommends: Other Jax Authors I'd be negligent if I didn't give a shout-out to our local literary community, which runs so much deeper and wider than most locals realize and includes works like Julie Delegal's Seen and Andres Rojas's Third Winter in Our Second Country and Johnny Masiulewicz's Happy Tapir zine series. I could name dozens of other writers I admire and their works, but as soon as I attempt a long list, I'll foolishly omit someone and lose a few nights' sleep. (I already see 15 or 20 people in my mind's eye whose names I didn't mention, but could have, just now.) Anyone who wants an extensive list of writers participating in the Jax community, just look at the archives for the last nine festivals at jaxbyjax.com. I'll just say this is the 10th year of JaxbyJax Literary Arts Festival, which my wife Jo Carlisle and I founded and then relinquished to the more capable hands of Darlyn and Brad Kuhn. --- Never miss an event! Anyone can be a writer – even an accomplished chef! The first step is deciding what you'll write about. It could be something you're passionate about or particularly skilled in... Or could it simply be the book (or cookbook) you think is missing from the world! Dennis Chan grew up in Jacksonville, where his family has owned twelve restaurants in the past eight decades. His earliest memories of food include standing on a little stool next to his grandfather's restaurant stove while watching him cook. Somehow, Dennis always knew that he would end up in the restaurant business. He opened Blue Bamboo in his hometown in 2005, after graduating from the prestigious Culinary Institute of America and working with the Disney Company, and celebrity chef Ming Tsai. Chef Dennis is an adjunct professor at Florida State College at Jacksonville and teaches personal enrichment cooking classes at Blue Bamboo. Chan's first cookbook, Hip Asian Comfort Food, was published in 2009.  He also served as president of the Florida Restaurant and Lodging Association North East chapter. Dennis won the 2018 Neighborhood to Nation recipe contest by General Mills and was chosen as one of 16 chefs to participate in Hormel Foods' Culinary Enrichment and Innovation Program. Chef Chan lives in Jacksonville, Florida with his wife Elizabeth, and seven-year-old sons Bennett and Michael. He says, “After working around the country, I am so happy to have found my way back home.” A supporter of many local organizations, Dennis believes that there is a place in everyone's heart and schedule for worthwhile organizations.    Officially known as the Boss of Food in her family, interviewer Lauren Titus is a long-time Northeast Florida resident who brings over 30 years experience in our area's local food movement to the magazine, along with a passion and expertise in baking and front-yard farming. After a career in digital production and enterprise content management, Lauren is excited to be focused on her first loves: writing and talking about food and the vital role it plays in our community. Lauren lives with her husband in St. Augustine, and while her children have flown from the nest, they continue to support the local food scenes in Austin and Los Angeles. READ Check out Dennis's cookbook, Let's Eat, from the library! DENNIS RECOMMENDS Places in Jacksonville to hold events in: The Main Library's Ansbacher Map Room is a cool place to hang out. It is also just a few floors away from the Main Library's Conference Center, which has an auditorium and a very functional event room. We have gotten the chance to cater in some pretty cool venues over the last 18 years. Some were on top of tall buildings, like the clubhouse at the Peninsula, and some were on the ground surrounded by trees, like Chandler Oaks Barn. We've catered at shooting ranges, and at homes right on the beach. We also I also love the venues making a difference for organizations in our community such as the soundstage at WJCT and the Glass Factory. Book inspirations: Hello Cupcake for playful decorating techniques on cupcakes.  The author is the photographer from my mentor's book, Blue Ginger Cookbook. Looking through that book always brings a smile. I have authored two cookbooks currently, Hip Asian Comfort Food and Let's Eat. Local bookstores carry them, and there is a copy at the Main Library. Southern Goodness from Celestia Mobley is my favorite local cookbook.      Music inspirations: My favorite songs are cooking show theme songs.   Sources for great ingredients: Jax Oriental, La Salsa, and Caribbean-Latino Asian are all well-stocked Asian markets. Atlantic Beach Urban Farms, Be Well Greens, and Bacon Farms are all great places to get fresh produce. The North Florida School has a good program teaching special needs children how to grow and maintain produce, and how to work in kitchens. Nothing beats Azar Sausage Company for locally made sausage. Cline's Custom Meats is the best place locally to get a steak to cook at home. We also have a cool "u-pick" persimmon farm here called Willie's Sweet Persimmons. Local Personal Enrichment Cooking Schools: A Chefs Cooking Studio and Italian Cooking Lessons Jax are two places that I teach on occasion, in addition to cooking classes at Blue Bamboo. --- Never miss an event! READ Check out The Confidante in print, digital, and audio in our catalog! CHRISTOPHER RECOMMENDS Here are the three books I found especially enlightening as I wrote The Confidante. Kristin Downey's The Woman Behind the New Deal: The Life and Legacy of Frances Perkins is the story of the progressive whose wish list essentially became the New Deal (minimum wages, Social Security, etc.). Perkins was the first woman cabinet member in American history, serving as Secretary of Labor for the entirety of Roosevelt's presidency (1933-1945). Personally, Perkins was not particularly warm and could be seen as rather mirthless. But her legacy as a New Deal heroine is deserved and her prominence in FDR's cabinet underscores how much Roosevelt respected competence regardless of sex or ethnicity. FDR and Perkins went back to his days as Governor of New York, and even before that, women played a large role in his professional life. In The Gatekeeper: Missy LeHand, FDR, and the Untold Story of the Partnership That Defined a Presidency, by Kathryn Smith, we learn that after Roosevelt contracted polio in 1921, Roosevelt brought on Marguerite “Missy” LeHand, a working-class woman from Somerville, Massachusetts as his secretary. In time, she became much more. When FDR became President in 1933, Missy came to Washington. She was not only the gatekeeper of his social and professional calendar but was essentially his Chief-of-Staff until a series of strokes incapacitated her in 1940-41. It was at this time, as I discuss in my book, that Anna Rosenberg became part of FDR's innermost circle. The dual struggles for equality in defense work and desegregation of the armed forces were undertaken within the Roosevelt White House by Mary McLeod Bethune, Robert Weaver, Bill Hastie, Al Smith, and Robert Vann. Bethune was the leader of the “Black Cabinet,” but the men alongside her performed admirable work in the service of advancing the Black cause. In her excellent book, The Black Cabinet: The Untold Story of African Americans and Politics During the Age of Roosevelt, Jill Watts describes the successes of the Black Cabinet—and the challenges: all five risked losing their jobs, being cashiered to faraway agencies, or being labeled Communist by reactionary congressmen. --- Sign Up for Library U to hear about the latest Lit Chats and catch them live! — https://jaxpubliclibrary.org/library-u-enrollment Jacksonville Public LibraryWebsite: https://jaxpubliclibrary.org/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/jaxlibrary Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/JaxLibrary/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/jaxlibrary/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/user/jaxpubliclibraryfl Contact Us: jplpromotions@coj.net

Millions of Orthodox Christians are celebrating Easter this weekend. They'll hear the traditional chants and hymns, centuries old, always solemn, and reverent. But some would they are also distant and unconnected to the daily reality of the culture we live in. No one knows that better than Rev. Dr. Nicholas Louh, a Greek Orthodox priest who's lighting a fire, you could say, to the Orthodox world with his motivational speaking around the country. In style, substance and easy to understand theological message, he sounds more like Billy Graham than Basil the Great, a fourth century Orthodox theologian. For the first millennia of Christianity there was only Orthodoxy. One Church. Then came the great Schism of 1054 separating East and West. Five hundred years later, the Protestant Reformation and more splintering. But Louh is true to the Orthodox roots of the faith. However, of the Orthodox world he admits, "We've had this beautiful what I call the deep end of the pool of faith... where what we're challenged with is how do we share it in a way that's practical, applicable and relevant to people's lives?" On this episode of Lighthouse Faith podcast, I am on the road again, this time to Southampton, New York, at the Lenten Retreat at the Dormition of the Virgin Mary Greek Orthodox Church, where Fr. Louh was the keynote speaker for three seminars. His bio shows that he's breaking the boundaries of the church building to build bridges with other religions, but also breaking down the separations between the more than thirty-thousand Christian denominations, the divisions of which have been the source of many a Holy war throughout the centuries, and even today in the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Both countries are majority Orthodox Christians. Louh is the senior priest at St. John the Divine Greek Orthodox Church in Jacksonville, Florida. He's also the Adjunct Professor of World Religions at the Florida State College at Jacksonville and is the chaplain for the Jacksonville Sharks Arena Football Team. He's all about interfaith dialogue and social justice... and helping people understand what God's purpose is for their lives. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

In April 1861, following a steady barrage of artillery that left him unable to resupply his garrison, the commander of the Union outpost of Fort Sumter, in Charleston's harbor, surrendered his command to the new Confederates States of America. Some argue that the actions of U.S. Army Major Robert Anderson, an old Seminole War hand, may have sealed the fate unfavorably for the new CSA. While he ordered his men to return cannon fire to the onshore batteries, he specifically prohibited shelling of the heart of Charleston, with all the loss of civilian life and structural destruction. By acting in response to CSA provocations, Anderson positioned his command to be viewed as both a victim of Confederate aggression and as a heroic defender of sovereign federal rights and authority. Who was Robert Anderson and how did assignments in a longer military career shape his temperament as commander of Fort Sumter? Dr. Wesley Moody fills us in. He has embarked on a full-scale biography of Anderson, whom, incredibly, has never had a biography written about him. Our listeners will find it of note that Anderson enjoyed extensive service in Florida, fighting at the Battle of Loxahatchee River, near present-day Jupiter, Florida, and on the staff of General Winfield Scott. Florida-native, Dr. John Wesley Moody III, has been a professor of history since 2007, Dr Moody has worked as a professor of history at Florida State College at Jacksonville.  Born and raised in Pensacola, Dr. Moody received a Bachelor's from the University of Southern Mississippi; a Master's degree from University of West Georgia; and a Ph.D. from Georgia State University. He specializes in 19th century American history, specifically military. He is in preliminary stages of a textbook proposal to tell Florida history from first European contact to the present. He is also presently in preliminary stages for a biography of Major Robert Anderson, the commander at Fort Sumter when the first shots there began the military aspects of the American Civil War. Dr Moody is author of four books already, including Demon of the Lost Cause: Sherman and Civil War History; Seven Myths of the Lost Cause; the Battle of Fort Sumter; and a biography of a civil war Marine. Host Patrick Swan is a board member with the Seminole Wars Foundation. He is a combat veteran and of the U.S. Army, serving in Iraq, Afghanistan, Kuwait, and Kosovo, and at the Pentagon after 9/11. A military historian, he holds masters degrees in Public History, Communication, and Homeland Security, and is a graduate of the US Army War College with an advanced degree in strategic studies. Krishnamurti and Tolstoy, Ghandi and Confucius, Rumi and Rilke are called on to aid us in examining these questions. "Is there spiritual redemption" - how do we know and how do we find it? In religion and spirituality what is the difference between belief and experience? How is expectation a barrier to living a genuine life? What is intrinsic to all of us? Following three weeks of how-to research methods from Chris Kimball, Seminole War historian and author, we bring an academic into our fold to discuss the view from inside the proverbial ivory tower. Professors battle over arcane academic theories but to do history right, this week's guest says one still must do basic gumshoe detective work to find out what happened and, possibly, why. The great news for researchers is that the Seminole Wars were well documented in writing from the highest levels of government down to the foot soldier or pioneer. Materials are available, even if they are crumbling in one's hands when inspected today.  Florida-native, Dr. John Wesley Moody III, has been a professor of history since 2007, Dr Moody has worked as a professor of history at Florida State College at Jacksonville. He compares and contrasts historical research methods, such as those Chris Kimball highlighted. And he discusses contentious contemporary approaches to historical research. Dr. Moody prefers the narrative aoproach, telling a coherent and possibly unified story to understand what happened at a given place and time. Other historical approaches include applying race, class, gender, and sexual identity as the lens through which a historian should view the past. Dr. Moody discusses pros and cons of historical approaches. Unity’s Huston Bryant signs to play basketball at Shorter. Lady Wolves’ Amberly Brown signs to play basketball at Florida State College of Jacksonville. Rant of the day: Stop the General Assembly's Voter Suppression bill. You knew it was coming. Given the overwhelming success of the primary absentee ballot push -- in terms of voter health protection and turnout -- some pencil head in the General Assembly would try to stop it from happening again. According to Thursday's Atlanta Journal-Constitution, a House committee wants to stop Republican Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger -- or anyone else for that matter -- from sending voters absentee ballot applications. The idea: To add a few roadblocks to those hoping to continue to voting from home. Raffensperger mass mailed more than 6.9 million applications earlier this year amid growing concerns about the coronavirus pandemic. The threat already had delayed one primary in Georgia and the health risk was growing, especially for one of the state's most active voter bases -- those of us 60 and older. It was an unqualified success across the state and in Northwest Georgia. More than 1.1 million people voted by absentee. Hundreds of thousands of people avoided potential infection by voting either by mail or else delivering ballots in conveniently placed "drop boxes" in Georgia counties. Floyd County had two such boxes; Bartow had five. But now voter suppressionists in the state House are whining about long voter lines on June 9, alleged voter fraud opportunities and a late vote count as their reasons to prevent another mass mailing. Heck, we're used to late vote counts in Floyd County so what's the issue? Never mind that Georgia is recording a surge in new coronavirus cases each day this week and we have runoff elections on Aug. 11 as well as a general election on Nov. 3. The real reason? Probably because of a surge in Democratic votes in the primary. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/john-druckenmiller/support

We've all received robocalls. They're annoying, irritating, and more than that, they're illegal. If you're receiving unwanted calls or solicitations from a business then you might be able to receive compensation. That's where a consumer protection attorney like Jared Lee comes in. This week Jordan and Jared sat down and discussed some of the ways consumers can be targeted by companies who would wish them harm. They also discuss how businesses can make sure they're doing what is right when it comes to protecting their clients' data and personal information. There are areas where a small business owner needs to make sure they're following the law, and you need to know what they are before you make a mistake that could lead to a lawsuit. Jared is an attorney who can help. Jared is the Managing Partner at Jackson Lee | PA, joining forces with his wife after a stellar career at one of the most prominent plaintiff’s firms in the nation. He’s done ridiculously impressive things like served as the chair of Florida’s Consumer Protection Committee and completed a 70.3 Ironman, but hasn't yet convinced a college football referee to change a horribly bad call. This has not prevented him from vocally expressing his opinions on such calls at games. No one can deny his commitment to pursuing what is right. This is what makes him an outstanding consumer protection attorney. Long before the beard, Jared attended Florida State College of Law (Go Noles!), where he made a commitment to use his legal education to help people. That quest led him to a brief stint as a public defender before he discovered his true passion in consumer protection law. Since that time, he’s had the privilege to represent consumers in obtaining sizable recoveries through trial, arbitration, and settlement, including multiple seven-figure outcomes. He’s also become the father to four (you read that right!) spunky daughters. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/letsgetuptobusiness/message
