Arise and Abide

In this episode of Arise + Abide, Sally and Curtis reflect on Psalm 119:137–143, a passage that highlights the enduring righteousness and trustworthiness of God's Word. As they explore themes of pressure, indignation, and feeling insignificant, they point to the joy and peace that come from anchoring our lives in God's thoroughly tested promises. With connections to Isaiah 55 and 2 Corinthians 1, this conversation reminds us that God's Word brings life, even in a world that plays by different rules.

In the gap, we often find ourselves confused about God's plans for us. Why did He call us to this if it's gonna be so difficult? Maybe it doesn't even look like it's gonna work.  How do we bridge the gap between our calling and the practical steps needed to fulfill that calling? Join Heather as she emphasizes the importance of the equipping and sanctification process, using the biblical story of David as a key example and highlighting the process and path to fulfilling a calling that often involves tribulation and suffering. Still, it is through these challenges that individuals are prepared for their purpose. She encourages listeners to embrace their calling and invest in their growth. And even when it feels overwhelming, we can press through the gap to reach the promises the Lord has given us.     00:00 Bridging the Gap Between Calling and Action 13:13 The Sanctification Process: Equipping for Purpose   PS. The Second Phase Podcast - Personal Branding & Brand Marketing and Life Strategies for Success for Female Entrepreneurs

Trusting God's Timing in a Hurry-Up World In a culture built on instant gratification and fast results, trusting God's timing can feel unnatural—even impossible. We're constantly told to hustle, push harder, and take control of our destinies. But the truth is, when we surrender our timeline and desires to God, it leads to a richer, more fulfilling life. Understanding God's Timing It's easy to assume we know what's best for our lives. We make plans, set goals, and chase what we believe will fulfill us—only to find that our best-laid strategies often fall short. But God's timing isn't just different—it's perfect. When we root ourselves in biblical truth, we can step back from striving and lean into the promises of a God who is never late. His timing may not align with ours, but it always aligns with His purpose. Trusting God's timing means believing that He's orchestrating something far greater than what we can see today. Navigating Seasons of Waiting Waiting can be one of the hardest things we do. Whether it's waiting on a relationship, a job opportunity, healing, or a sense of purpose, it's natural to feel doubt, fear, or even frustration. It's crucial to recognize that it's not about denying these feelings but understanding that they are part of a larger, orchestrated plan. When fear and doubt whisper that we're falling behind, we must remember: trust God's timing. Intentional Living in a Fast-Paced World We live in a world that equates speed with success. But the kingdom of God often moves at a different pace. Jesus was never in a hurry, and yet He fulfilled every part of His mission. We are invited to do the same: to live intentionally, not reactively. To trust God's timing, we must actively resist the pressure to keep up with the world's pace. That means setting boundaries, evaluating what truly matters, and making space for rest, prayer, and spiritual discipline. When we do this, we trade anxiety for peace—and burnout for purpose. Heather is a successful attorney, wife, and mom—but behind the scenes, she was quietly struggling for years. Heather shares how a high-pressure lifestyle and long-standing habits slowly eroded her peace, her joy, and her ability to show up fully in her own life. From early drinking in college to a deeply public rock bottom that led her to seek help, Heather speaks honestly about the unraveling—and the rebuilding—that followed. With the support of her family and community, and a deepening relationship with God, Heather began to heal. She opens up about her time in traditional rehab treatment, how she learned to regulate her emotions in healthy ways, and how community and faith became her anchors in the storm. Her story reminds us that there is zero shame in seeking help.  This episode is for the woman who's silently struggling, the one who's managing everything on the outside but feeling broken inside. Heather's message is clear: freedom is possible, and Jesus is not afraid of your darkest moments. What You'll Learn in This Episode: How alcohol quietly became a barrier between Heather and the life she truly wanted The mental, emotional, and spiritual toll of trying to keep it all together Why hitting a low point became the very thing that opened the door to healing The role of faith, community, and professional support in her transformation Daily practices that help Heather experience peace and presence Encouragement for anyone who feels alone in their struggle Join our private, small-group coaching space, The Missing Peace, and get BJDW all-community access for free! https://butjesusdrankwine.com/coaching Order Christy's book now available! Arise and Abide

In this episode, Sally and Curtis reflect on Psalm 119:129-136, a passage filled with awe for God's word and sorrow over the world's disobedience. They explore the psalmist's deep longing for God's commands, the peace that comes from waiting on the Lord, and the tension between divine truth and the brokenness of the world. With references to John 14, James 1, and 1 John 4, the conversation draws out how love for God leads to obedience and how the Spirit empowers us to live faithfully, even when surrounded by injustice. Ultimately, they offer encouragement rooted in Christ's victory and abiding presence.

Today Heather and ChatGPT tackle the same question, "What do I do if I feel jealous of someone skinnier than me?" This is the question most of us have experienced, but few want to say out loud. While ChatGPT does a good job of acknowledging that comparison issues are about idealization and more, Heather fills in the holes with what the Bible has to say to our comparison issues. She talks about the importance of gratitude and how we really do need to change the way we objectify and the narratives we have in our heads regarding other people who have a "better" body than we do. Can any woman change the world?  Discover the potential of women to be world changers with this week's inspiring guest, Brooke Kehl! Brooke Kehl, Marketing Director of Eastern European Mission, explores what it really means for women to step into their calling, take faith-driven risks, and create ripple effects of hope across the globe. Brooke shares her personal journey growing up in a missionary family, the powerful influence of other women's testimonies, and moving stories of transformation—like Zara's courageous faith despite its manifold risks to her life. This episode is filled with authentic conversations about overcoming the comfort zone, staying faithful through challenges, and practical encouragement for anyone wondering if they're truly cut out to make a difference. Listen in to learn how ordinary acts and steadfast faith can change lives around the world—and how you, too, are invited to become a world changer right where you are. Catch Up: Highlights from Our Episode with Brooke Kehl Brooke's journey began in East Africa, where she learned firsthand what “risky faith” looks like from her missionary parents. Over the past seven years with EEM, she's devoted her life to spreading hope across cultures, and in our conversation, she opens up about the power of testimony, stepping out of your comfort zone, and why courage starts with experiencing God's love. Stories That Inspire Action Brooke shares the story of Zahra, a refugee from Afghanistan, whose life—and that of her husband—was forever changed by encountering Jesus through a Bible in her own language. Despite facing grave danger, Zahra's courage ignited a ripple effect that started a church among other Afghans and led to an entirely new chapter of hope for many. Another unforgettable story is that of Faena from Kazakhstan, who memorized just one verse of scripture in a prison cell—and discovered transformative love and purpose, now passing on that hope to others in Central Asia. Real Talk: Choosing Calling Over Comfort Brooke doesn't pretend risk-taking is easy. She honestly shares her struggle with comfort and reveals how leaning on God for strength—and surrounding herself with inspiring women—has kept her moving forward, even when it feels easier to quit. How You Can Make A Difference Today You might wonder, “Am I really a world changer?” Brooke says YES! You don't need to travel the globe to live on mission. Opening your heart to people around you—at a coffee shop, in your neighborhood, in daily conversations—can change lives. Every small step, backed by God's love, matters. Connect, Learn, and Get Involved Want more inspiring stories? Visit EEM.org, and follow Eastern European Mission on Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, and YouTube. You'll find testimony-filled newsletters, more powerful podcasts, and opportunities to join their mission. Final Word of Encouragement Brooke reminds us that courage comes from knowing how deeply we are loved by God. When we root ourselves in that truth, we find the strength to say “yes” to impact—wherever we are.   We're thrilled to accompany you on this journey of faith, growth, and transformation. In this episode of Arise + Abide, Curtis and Sally reflect on 2 Kings 14:28–29 and 15:8–29, examining a turbulent period in Israel's history marked by assassinations, short reigns, and a refusal to turn from sin. As king after king follows the destructive example of Jeroboam, the nation spirals toward exile despite God's long-suffering patience and repeated warnings through prophets like Amos. The hosts draw powerful parallels between the kings' desperate grip on power and our own tendency to control outcomes instead of trusting God's promises. Through this sobering account, they highlight the freedom that comes from surrender—releasing control, remembering God's faithfulness, and walking daily in His plan.

After ten years of trying to moderate her drinking, Jill was inspired by Christy's sobriety story in the summer of 2023 and made the bold decision to stop drinking entirely. What followed was a journey of spiritual renewal, mental clarity, and deeper intimacy with God. Jill opens up about the subtle ways alcohol had taken hold of her life—emotionally, physically, and spiritually. She shares how it consumed her mental energy, fueled guilt and shame, and ultimately stood in the way of the peace and purpose she longed for. Through surrender, community, and daily obedience, Jill experienced true freedom—and now encourages others to do the same. This conversation is especially meaningful for women navigating caregiving, motherhood, and the pressure to “keep it together.” Jill's courage to speak up and step out is a reminder that the cost of honesty is far outweighed by the gift of freedom. The conversation explores the tension between crying out for justice and submitting to God's loving discipline. They discuss the importance of discernment, the transformative power of God's Word, and how loving His commands shapes our understanding of what is true and good.
