If you are in any gardening group, whether an in-person club or online, you likely see countless home remedies for everything that ails our plants. Gardeners tout everything as a miracle cure for something in the garden, from putting tums in the soil to burying fish, making weed killer out of vinegar and salt (please don't) to using dawn dish soap as an insecticide (again, please don't). One that pops up over and over again is using Epsom salts, either sprinkled or added to the soil or used as a foliar spray when diluted in water. I've seen it recommended for blossom end rot, boosting plant growth, germinating seeds and other random maladies. But, is it really good for your plants? Does it help with any of that stuff or is it just another case of correlation over causation? Today on Just Grow Something we're digging into Epsom salts. What they are, if they can help in the garden, and, if so, with what exactly. That way next time someone recommends Epsom salts for curing the yellowing leaves on your plant you'll be able to decide for yourself whether that's an effective plan. Let's dig in!

China is becoming ever more important to global affairs. But political and geopolitical challenges, as well as the covid-19 pandemic, have diminished Europeans' ability to engage with Chinese thinkers and understand their views and ideas about the world. In this mini-series, Mark Leonard and Janka Oertel try to change that by engaging in conversations with some of the best Chinese academics, researchers, writers, and journalists on diverse topics in Chinese internal debates that matter most to Europeans.  --  In this episode, we are joined by research assistant professor of political science at Tsinghua University, Duan Jiuzhou, who is an expert on the Middle East and North Africa with a special interest in civil-military relations and the political economy of development. Duan talks us through how Chinese scholars view the dynamics in the Middle East and North Africa, as well as China's role in the region. Which countries do Chinese experts view as the major players? What does the Saudi-Iranian detente mean for China's ambitions as a global peace-broker? And what does the development of Chinese-Middle Eastern relations mean for the world order in the coming decade? As the Asia-Pacific becomes the central stage of the US-China rivalry, Vietnam has emerged as one of the key countries to watch. While Vietnam has positioned itself as a critical player in the United States' Indo-Pacific strategy, and Hanoi's distrust of China has grown in response to Beijing's increasingly aggressive stance in the South China Sea, the Vietnam-China relationship transcends mere geopolitical binaries. Joining Dr Natali Pearson on SSEAC Stories, Nguyen Khac Giang discusses Vietnam and China's complex relationship, reflecting on the intimate ideological links, economic dependency, and security concerns that link the two countries. He discusses some of the key strategic challenges faced by Vietnam, how they can be negotiated, and whether it is possible for Hanoi to leverage relations with both China and the United States to minimise the potential geo-political risks associated with great power competition. This is Episode 22 of "Centering Centers", a POD Network podcast that explores the work of Centers of Teaching and Learning and the vision and insights of educational developers in higher education. We are speaking with Tracy Zou (@ZouTracy) who has worked as an educational developer at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and who has now transitioned back to a faculty role as an assistant professor at the University of Hong Kong. In addition to teaching, she is an associate editor of IJAD – the International Journal for Academic Development and an editorial member of Asian Journal of the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning as well as a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. Our conversation centers on the lessons learned in the shift from faculty to developer and back, as well as the importance of fostering collaboration and critical friendships with people who not only support but challenge us to think and do things differently. And why those connections are so important to grow and sustain one's teaching. Deconstructing Disney

Episode SummaryIn pursuit of another Oscar-worthy animated feature, Disney chose a culturally significant protagonist and pumped up the romance for Pocahontas (1995).  Unsurprisingly, good intentions didn't prevent a group of white men from creating a hugely problematic film, rife with gross historical inaccuracies, racism, and misogyny! Pocahontas underperformed at the box office, and the only Oscar went to Alan Menken and Stephen Schwartz for best original song.Episode BibliographyAleiss, A. (1995, June 24). Is there a racial element? Why do people prefer to give goods, and why don't most NGOs want this? Are donations of weapons philanthropy? How are people using technology to disintermediate disaster philanthropy (e.g. "donating" via Airbnb,  giving cryptocurrency)? Access to integrative therapy associated with better breast cancer survival Bryn Mawr Hospital and IQVIA, Inc., December 29 2021. An article that appeared on December 18, 2021 in the Journal of Oncology reported improved breast cancer survival among patients who had access to integrative therapies, including nutrition consultations or programs, exercise consultations or programs, patient support groups or patient-survivor pairings, spiritual services, psycho-oncology support, massage therapy, meditation or mindfulness, yoga, acupuncture or acupressure, music or art therapy, Reiki or therapeutic healing touch, and tai chi or qi gong. (NEXT) Substantial weight loss can reduce risk of severe COVID-19 complications Successful weight-loss intervention before infection associated with 60% lower risk of severe disease in patients with obesity Cleveland Clinic, December 29, 2021 A Cleveland Clinic study shows that among patients with obesity, prior weight loss achieved with bariatric surgery was associated with a 60% lower risk of developing severe complications from COVID-19 infection. The research was published in the journal JAMA Surgery. Numerous studies have established obesity as a major risk factor for developing serious illness from an infection of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19. Obesity weakens the immune system, creates a chronic inflammatory state, and increases risk for cardiovascular disease, blood clots, and lung conditions. All of these conditions can complicate COVID-19. (NEXT) Trial finds Ginkgo biloba may help stroke survivors maintain cognitive function Nanjing University in China, January 2, 2022 Life Extension Update starts the New Year with fresh findings concerning a potential benefit for Ginkgo biloba in ischemic stroke survivors. The herb could help maintain the brain's command and control ability known as executive function, as well as aid in other areas at risk of decline among those who have experienced a stroke. On December 18, 2017, the journal Stroke & Vascular Neurology reported positive cognitive effects in association with supplementation with Ginkgo biloba among men and women who had recently experienced an ischemic stroke. Post-stroke cognitive decline has been found to affect approximately 30% of stroke survivors, and can be progressive. According to the authors  possible mechanisms for ginkgo's benefits in stroke patients include prevention of programmed cell death and increased cerebral blood flow. (NEXT) Doing less, achieving more: How the practice of wu-wei can boost athletes' performance  Nanyang Technological University (Singapore), January 4, 2022 When athletes experience the state of flow or are in the ‘zone', they sometimes describe the feeling as one of effortlessness. Although their exertions may feel effortless, what their bodies achieve in terms of performance can be extraordinary. In recent years, an increasing number of sport psychologists recommend that athletes practice mindfulness as part of their mental preparation for competing. Mindfulness aims to develop a non-judgemental awareness of the present moment, and can not only improve focus, but also promote that elusive state of flow. In a conceptual review published in KeAi's Asian Journal of Sport and Exercise Psychology, a group of researchers assert that the ancient Chinese wisdom of wu-wei, which can be understood as non-doing or non-striving, is a natural extension of mindfulness training for athletes. (NEXT) Researchers find one autoimmune disease could lead to another University of Colorado, January 4, 2022 Researchers at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus have discovered that having one kind of autoimmune disease can lead to another. The scientists serendipitously found that mice with antibody-induced rheumatoid arthritis in their joints went on to develop spinal lesions similar to those in axial spondyloarthritis (AxSpA) which causes fusion of the vertebrate and curvature, or bending, of the backbone. Our results suggest that one autoimmune disease, such as inflammatory arthritis, may also lead to a secondary autoimmune disease such as AxSpA," said the study's lead author Nirmal Banda, Ph.D., professor in the division of rheumatology at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. "This interesting disease association may be due to the binding of anti-collagen autoantibodies to the spine, or to some alteration of the immune system that requires further investigation." (NEXT) Canola oil in the diet accelerates brain damage and increases the risk of dementia Temple University January 3, 2022 Canola oil is one of the most popular vegetable oils in the world. However, many integrative healthcare providers are sounding the alarm about this seemingly harmless oil. And, as you already know, “popular” doesn't always mean it's healthy for us. For example, a new study out of the Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University and published in the journal Scientific Reportshas linked canola oil with a decrease in memory and learning indicative of Alzheimer's disease – the most common form of dementia. It's also associated with triggering unwanted weight gain. In short, canola oil seems to be doing more harm than good, especially inside the brain. Canola oil actually increased the risk factors linked to Alzheimer's disease (GUEST) Tony Lyons Subject:  The Censorship of Bobby Kennedy's books (and other books), The Real Anthony Fauci Tony Lyons is the president and publisher of Skyhorse Publishing, a company that has published over 10,000 volumes and has made a name for itself by publishing highly controversial books on vaccine risks, autism and more recently books countering the official Covid-19 narrative. This episode is a conversation with British-Nigerian Fashion Designer Tokyo James and American-Nigerian Photographer and Creative Director Mikey Oshai who is the man behind the brand's visual imagery.  Tokyo's studio is based in Lagos and since the brand's launch in 2015, has taken the fashion world by storm with impeccably tailored designs, strong cultural meaning and intensity of storytelling which is re-defining the modern man with an unapologetic intersectional aesthetic of individual thought and identity. Tokyo has received global acclaim by Vogue, I-D, W, CNN African Voices, and Harper's Bazaar U.K.  Recently, Mikey Oshai was featured in CNN Africa. In partnership with Jaqueline Pham and The Asian Journal we are launching a new segment highlighting fashion through the lens of Asian culture. Please tune in after the conversation for intriguing fashion insights by Jaqueline reporting from Vietnam.   Special thanks to Will Fitzpatrick at Soho Radio in London for sound production.    --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/zara-korutz/message

Retailers such as Walmart entered the financial services space when it launched a payment app that allows Mexican customers to receive remittances from the US. With global professionals wanting to send home payments back home to their families, I wanted to explore how the remittance market is heating up. With Remity filing to go public and BayaniPay's partnership with BDO Bank and Seafood City there seems to be a growing number of trends that I wanted to talk about. Los Angeles-based BayaniPay recently launched a new borderless digital banking service in partnership with BDO Unibank, the largest bank in the Philippines, and Seafood City, a large US-based Filipino supermarket chain. Through the service and partnership, the companies offer millions of Asian Americans a low-cost, frictionless way to send money to their families back in their homelands, pay bills and conduct online transactions. BayaniPay takes its name from ""Bayani,"" the Filipino word for "hero"—a term often used to describe global professionals in their home countries. Born out of a partnership between inclusion tech venture studio Talino Ventures and leading Asian American multimedia publisher The Asian Journal, BayaniPay received funding from Wavemaker Partners, a cross-border venture capital firm investing in early-stage startups in the United States and Southeast Asia. Winston Damarillo is the co-founder and CEO of BayaniPay. He joins me on the Tech Talks Daily Podcast to share BayaniPay's mission to use technology to break down the borders in banking and level the playing field for all global citizens.

What if the future of sports gambling was already here? What if it had all of the sports data and research you need, all in one place and you didn't have to scour the internet for the info??? Well, it has arrived and it's called - FANALYZE.My guest today is the CEO of Fanalyze, Juan Juan. Yes , and as he says in this episode, so nice, they named him twice haha! Juan tells us about his early days living in the Philippines and then eventually moving to the Bay Area in Northern California as a young kid. He worked for a few start-ups and then Apple as a product design man for the company. He also wrote as a journalist for the "Asian Journal" and covered the extremely popular Manny Pacquiao during his young boxing career.Juan and his Co-Founder Chris, came up with the concept while being stud fantasy football players and realizing how many websites were needed for research and analysis.  They came to the conclusion that all the data you need, should be in one place, one app, and they were going to be the ones to execute that vision.Once they figured that out, they were off to the races and created this company that has some serious investors and heavy hitters on the staff from the sports world.  This is the "Google of Sports data and betting information".  Fanalyze is also going to provide in-game, real-time data which other companies can't do. This is the GAME CHANGER for live betting purposes to have that data simultaneously follow the games when you need it quickly to get bets in. Juan is a great guy and Fanalyze has a very bright future! If you'd like to invest  on their crowd funding site and also download the app, see the links below!Follow Fanalyze:https://republic.co/fanalyzefanalyze.com@fanalyze - Fanalyze AppFollow Me and SUBSCRIBE, LIKE and COMMENT on  the Too Tall Sports Podcast:YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCOT1dawh_079qckq7OmFHAQInstagram: @tootallsportspodcastTwitter: @TooTallSportsFacebook Group: TooTallSportsPodcastApple Podcasts: Too Tall Sports PodcastSpotify: Too Tall Sports Podcasthttps://www.diamantenetwork.com/network/brettlorinPandora: https://www.pandora.com/podcast/too-tall-sports-podcast/PC:52128Email: tootallsportspodcast@gmail.com

Fleeting Agencies: A Social History of Indian Coolie Women in British Malaya (Cambridge UP, 2021) disrupts the male-dominated narratives by focusing on gendered patterns of migration and showing how South Asian women labour migrants engaged with the process of migration, interacted with other migrants and negotiated colonial laws. This is the first study of Indian coolie women in British Malaya to date. In exploring the politicization of labour migration trends and gender relations in the colonial plantation society in British Malaya, the author foregrounds how the migrant Indian 'coolie' women manipulated colonial legal and administrative perceptions of Indian women; their gender-prescriptive roles, relations within patriarchal marriage institutions, and even the emerging Indian national independence movement in India and Malaya. All this, to ensure their survival, escape from unfavourable relations and situations, and improve their lives. The book also introduces the concept of situational or fleeting agency, which contributes to further a nuanced understanding of agency in the lives of Indian coolie women. Arunima Datta is a historian of South and Southeast Asia and the British Empire. Her main area of research interest focuses on the transnational mobility of South Asians in the colonial period (nineteenth and twentieth century) across different parts of the British Empire. Much of Dr. Datta's research has simultaneously also focused on themes of labor history, transnational Indian nationalism, women's and gender history. In addition to Fleeting Agencies, she has also published a number of articles and chapters, concerning South Asian labor, migration and women's histories. Her current research project is centered around the migration and mobility of Indian Travelling Ayahs (travelling nannies) across the British Empire in the nineteenth and twentieth century. Sino-Algerian Relations: From Anti-Colonial Allies to Strategic Partners? (Webinar)

This webinar was co-organised with the Society for Algerian Studies. Sino-Algerian relations date back to the Afro-Asian Bandung conference in 1955. China’s status as first non-Arab country to recognise Algeria’s pre-independence provisional government in 1958, coupled with Algiers’ support in helping China restore its security council seat at the UN in 1971, represent key moments that consolidated the historic bilateral relationship. Despite this early political and diplomatic alliance, economic relations did not take off until the early 2000s, propelled by Algeria’s accumulation of hydrocarbon revenues. Chinese companies obtained major billion dollar contracts in construction and infrastructure works. Despite many challenges, Algeria found in China a reliable partner supporting its development. The two countries continue to cooperate not only bilaterally, their preferred framework for economic and commercial exchange, but also through multilateral fora such as FOCAC and CASCF. In 2014, China elevated the relationship to a “comprehensive strategic partnership”, the highest level of diplomatic-cum-economic relations which Beijing extends to key partners. Algeria is also a signatory to Beijing’s flagship Belt and Road initiative. For Beijing, the North African state has a geostrategic location with proximity to Europe and to the Sahel and sub-Saharan Africa. The scope and strength of relations in the post-pandemic era will likely continue to strengthen. This webinar explored the historical background and the evolution of the political and economic relations between the two countries, highlighting opportunities and challenges going forward. Francesco Saverio Leopardi is Research Fellow at the Marco Polo Centre for Global Europe-Asia Connections, Ca’ Foscari University of Venice and teaches Global Asian Studies at Ca’ Foscari International College. His research interests currently focus on the Sino-Algerian economic relations and the history of economic transformation in Algeria. He also has a long-time interest in the history of the Palestinian national movement and in 2020 he published with Palgrave Macmillan his first monograph The Palestinian Left and its Decline. Hi everyone. I hope you're keeping safe, healthy, and hanging in there. Sending love your way and my thoughts are with you.-----I thought this "trend" was going to die down soon but we are still seeing recent posts about people doing The Fox Eye Trend on their social media. What is the Fox Eye Trend? Why is it racist? Marianne Mychaskiw discusses why The Fox Eye Trend is trash. Even after receiving negative attention from Asians, this trend is still circulating in social media. As Asians, specifically Pacific Islanders, it just triggered plenty of memories of bullies pulling their eyelids at us. Marianne is a beauty editor, freelance journalist, and brand copywriter for both digital and print where she covers topics about beauty, wellness, entertainment, lifestyle, and sex.In this episode, we define the difference between appropriation vs. appreciation, why Asian features are not a trend, and what solutions we can arrive at to help raise awareness about these racial issues. Our goal is to always come from a place of love and we strive to do our best to stay informed, do our research, keep learning, and continue the discussion.  FOLLOW MARIANNE MYCHASKIWMarianne's InstagramFOLLOW HELLO BEAUTYHello Beauty's InstagramHello Beauty's FacebookHello Beauty's YouTubeFOLLOW JOYCE PLATONJoyce Platon's Instagram

Illegal, undocumented and unregulated fishing became one of the most prominent issues of the first term Jokowi government. Its prominence arose in part because of repeated confrontations at sea with the fishing fleets and coastguard of China and Vietnam, but more notably owing to the hardline enforcement approach of Jokowi’s first term fisheries minister, Susi Pudjiastuti. Susi’s use of explosives to sink siezed foreign vessels and her high media profile made her one of President Jokowi’s most popular ministers, but she was not re-appointed in Jokowi’s second term cabinet. But how did Susi transform Indonesia’s fisheries industry during her tenure? And what does her her replacement tell us about the sustainability of her approach to combating illegal fishing? In this week's Talking Indonesia podcast, Dr Dave McRae discusses these issues with Dr Fabio Scarpello, lecturer in politics and international relations in the Faculty of Arts at the University of Auckland. Dr Scarpello is the author of ‘Susi Versus the rest: the political economy of the fisheries industry in Indonesia during Jokowi’s first term’, recently published in the Asian Journal of Political Science. The Talking Indonesia podcast is co-hosted by Dr Dave McRae from the University of Melbourne’s Asia Institute, Dr Jemma Purdey from Monash University, Dr Dirk Tomsa from La Trobe University, and Dr Charlotte Setijadi from the Singapore Management University. SHOW NOTES   Guido Van Ryssegem is a badass. If you haven’t heard of him before, you may have heard of some of his contributions to the healthcare-fitness world. Just to name a few, Nick Winkelman studied under him and has become wildly popular. The sleeper stretch for throwers was a Guido invention. I was fortunate to attend Guido Attractor State and Dynamic Systems Theory Workshop and I can say with confidence that it changed the way I treat certain cases dramatically. The easiest way to think of Guido’s work in reducing Attractor States, is figuring out what the body is “asking for” and then giving it proper dosage of the proper “exercise medication.” Or maybe simplest way is to just hear the conversation :) Using the tactics Guido shares, I’ve been able to reduce many of my patient’s symptoms with a single corrective exercise within a matter of seconds. Neck pain, back pain, knee pain, hip impingement and so much more are treatable with the CORRECT corrective exercises. If you want to see a patient buy into your style quickly, consider attended Guido’s course. Simply amazing stuff.   Guido Van Ryssegem Bio: Mr. Guido Van Ryssegem is owner and co-founder of Safe Recovery, LLC. How does silence impact spirituality at the level of interfaith or interreligious engagement? Our guest today, Kenneth Leong, wrote a seminal book on Christian-Buddhist interspirituality, and so we were eager to have him join the Encountering Silence conversation to reflect on how silence takes us to a place beyond the limitations or separations of doctrine, dogma, or religious culture. Kenneth S. Dr Dag Erik Berg speaks at the South Asian seminar. There has been a tendency in caste studies to explain the origins and existence of caste, relying on structural approaches to explain how it is produced and by whom. This paper seeks to step aside from such a focus in order to analyse enduring caste-based oppression of Dalits in India. To do so, I introduce the concept of mechanism of oppression, which means that upward social mobility is a trend that co-exists with atrocity. I suggest that the concept "mechanism of oppression" follows up common sense explanations among Dalit activists and that it represents one realist approach to address "the Dalit question" and caste exclusion. As an adequate starting point for analysing atrocities, this concept opens possibilities of understanding legal developments pertaining to the Scheduled Castes in India. The paper will refer to cases in Andhra Pradesh and lessons concerning dominance, atrocity and caste. Dr Dag Erik Berg is a postdoctoral research fellow associated with the group on "Diversity and Inequality" at the Centre for Modern Indian Studies (CeMIS), University of Göttingen, Germany. Before joining CeMIS, he was Associate Professor in Intercultural Studies at NLA University College, Norway and has been previously affiliated with University of Bergen and SOAS, London. Berg has published articles on Dalit movements in Andhra Pradesh, law and governance in India as well as caste and race in intercultural perspective. His ongoing book project is concernDed with studying the Dalits in India and the relation between embedded social complexities of caste based oppression and the legal responses to redress social injustice. This presentation follows up his article in Asian Journal of Law and Society "Structural mechanism of oppression, law and the Dalit question in India" (2015). This seminar series is organised with the support of the History Faculty.
