Show Notes  Our guest today is Rich Lewis—an author, speaker, and personal coach who focuses on centering prayer as a means for inner transformation. Rich's newest book is titled, Sitting with God: A Journey to Your True Self through Centering Prayer. In preparing for this show, it occurred to me that many of us know very little about Centering Prayer, although it is a widely used vehicle for fostering a deeper Contemplative Life.  Let's see what Rich has to teach us today regarding Centering Prayer and the Contemplative Life. Quiet Time Coaching Episode 513 | New Creation Series — Part 5 | “New Creation - New Picture” | Malcolm Cox Introduction A new creation! I'm Malcolm Cox. Welcome to this series on the topic of ‘A new creation'. New Creation - New Picture Exploring Our Picture of God: A Journey of Understanding and Healing What is your picture of God? We're diving into deep stuff today: Our impressions of God and how they affect us. Let's take a stroll down memory lane and see how our views of God have evolved over the years. Childhood Impressions Remember when you were a kid? For me, God seemed distant and holy, except when I thought about Jesus. He made God feel closer, more like a friend than a distant deity. As I got older, the hymns and anthems I sang at church started making God seem more majestic, like a huge, powerful, creative force. Why Does Our Picture of God Matter? A.W. Tozer said, "What comes into our mind when we think about God is the most important thing about us" It's so true, isn't it? Our image of God shapes who we are and how we relate to others. If we see God as loving, we're more likely to be loving ourselves. But if we see Him as angry or distant, it can mess with our heads. Dallas Willard put it this way: "The single most important thing about us is our idea of God and its associated images." Challenging Our Assumptions Think about where your ideas of God came from. Were they from your parents, teachers, or that old guy at church who always preached fire and brimstone? How do we find a better picture of God? Consider the following points. God is always greater (and better) than we imagine "Great is the LORD, and highly to be praised, And His greatness is unsearchable." - Psalm 145:3 NASB Give this verse a few moments of your time. Have you ever thought about how amazing God really is? His greatness, power, love, and light—it's mind-blowing. We'll need to meditate on God's greatness if we're to get anywhere near an accurate picture of Him. Revealing the True Nature of God It's easy to get the wrong idea, like thinking God can't be trusted or that He's just waiting to punish us. But Jesus came to set the record straight. He's like God's selfie, showing us exactly what God is like in human form. "Jesus said to him, 'Have I been so long with you, and yet you have not come to know Me, Philip? He who has seen Me has seen the Father; how can you say, ‘Show us the Father'?'" - John 14:9 NASB God is closer than we imagine We're not alone; He's always with us, guiding us, and loving us no matter what. "and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age." - Matthew 28:20 NASB We walk through life with Jesus, accompanied by the Father and Spirit. We've got a tribe, we're safe, we belong, and we know where we're going. God is Three-In-One "'Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptising them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.'" - Matthew 28:19 NASB His wonderful, complex, relational love is indestructible. He offers us this love to be experienced here, now, and in eternity. God's loving creative power overflowed in creating us. Now, we get to participate in divine love. Conclusion: Embracing Healing and Transformation So, let's invite God to heal and shape our view of Him. When we see God as the loving, compassionate, powerful friend that He is, it changes everything. We're not alone and we're not vulnerable; He's always with us, guiding us, strengthening us and loving us no matter what. Let's journey together as a church in discovery and healing. Let's explore the depths of our faith and deepen our relationship with the divine. For Reflection Contemplate this sculpture of the prodigal's reunion with his father (Luke 15). What do you notice? What does this picture show us about Father God's heart and how he feels about us? God bless, Malcolm Please add your comments on this week's topic. We learn best when we learn in community. We reflect on the importance of recognizing our need for God's love and allowing ourselves to be transformed by His grace. We also share personal experiences and insights on repentance, amendment, and trusting in God's plan especially when the desires of our heart are not being fulfilled. We end by discussing the joys that can come from Lent when approached with a tender, sensitive, and alert heart.    Heather's One Thing - Lenten Playlist Heather's Other One Thing - The talk Joy, Hope, and the Way Around by Monsignor Shea Sister Miriam's One Thing - The Pints with Aquinas episode on Transhumanism and Emerging Technologies w/ Fr. Burke Masters   Journal Questions: Have I ever approached Lent with a sense of wonder? How have I approached Lent with self hatred in the past? What parts of myself are the stranger I need to welcome home and allow the Father to love? How can I be more open to God as the Divine Interruptor?   Discussion Questions: Where are you hungry? Where are others in your life hungry? Who in your life is the stranger you need to welcome? Do you believe something wonderful can happen this Lent? Where have you become resigned and hard of heart instead of tender and sensitive?   Quotes to Ponder: The Church is a very vibrant Mother, and she shows us how happy she is about Lent. All through her liturgy there is this mood: something wonderful can happen. All of her prayers and directives are saying, “Please let it happen. Please allow it to happen.” (Mother Mary Francis P.C.C. A Time of Renewal. Kindle Edition. Austin opened up about his first encounter with ayahuasca and the profound impact it had on his life, reshaping his memories and guiding him on a path of enlightenment.Guiding Others Through Personal Transformation: Austin and I discussed a crucial question: Should one do their own inner work before leading others? The answer is a resounding yes! Austin emphasized the importance of self-accountability and practicing what we preach to truly guide others toward their spiritual truth.Challenges, Intuition, and Spiritual Ego: Life's challenges are often our greatest teachers. Austin shared his personal struggles, including overcoming pride and spiritual ego, and how these experiences cemented his commitment to his spiritual journey. We also delved into the art of accessing intuition, quieting the mind, and tuning into our body's signals. The Role of Suffering in Growth: Do we need to suffer to change? This thought-provoking question led us to discuss David Hawkins' map of consciousness and the pursuit of truth. Austin recounted a pivotal moment of rejection at an ayahuasca retreat that forced him to confront his humility and the lessons learned from suffering. This episode is a treasure trove of wisdom for anyone interested in spiritual growth, the role of psychedelics in religious practice, and the journey towards self-discovery. It was a reminder of the importance of doing our own inner work before guiding others, the power of intuition, and the profound lessons that can emerge from our darkest moments. A simple structure for prayer is "ready, set, go. 'Ready' is you just create a sacred time and a sacred space. I'm going to meet with God. I'm going to have my time alone with the Lord every morning, in this particular place. I'm going to light a candle...You begin that time, you turn off your phone, you recollect yourself...So that's getting 'ready,'" said Fr. John Bartunek, LC, author of books, including "40 Days to Peace and Union with God: A Journey in Prayer Through the Daily Gospels" (Sophia Institute Press).  "Then 'set' is the first things that you say to God. We recommend just thank God for something specific. Ask him for something that you need or someone you love needs. And then open yourself to receive whatever grace He wants to give you. So that's 'ready, set' and then you're ready for the 'go.' And the 'go' is the real substance of this time of prayer. And we've got five different steps that you can use during that."

In 2013, Rich began to dabble in silent prayer, a term that's often used as synonymous with centering prayer. He had heard and read that silence can transform you. He wanted to experience this transformation too.He would force myself to sit in silence. He began to test how long He could sit there. He started with one minute and increased it to three and even four minutes. It was difficult!Silence and silent prayer are counter-cultural. They are very challenging to cultivate because everything in our culture seems to point in another direction. Yet, surprisingly, it is in silence that he has has found profound transformation. And that is the motivation for writing this book. He wants to share what he has discovered. The point of this book is to share his centering-prayer sojourn with you. His hope is that his journey will help you with your journey. Centering prayer is not a race. It is a long-term marathon. Centering prayer practiced daily, monthly, yearly will transform you. It does not replace other forms of prayer; it complements them.Centering prayer has changed his life and the way He thinks. It has been so life-giving that he cannot keep it to myself. He has to share it.https://silenceteaches.com/about-the-books/

Yoga of Ascension

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 12, 2021 56:44

In this Rich Lewis interview we discuss centering prayer and returning to the well of faith. Centering prayer is a Christian contemplative practice and form of meditation, where you sit in silence and make yourself available to receive god's presence. If the mind wanders you can use a holy word or focus on the breath. But the goal of centering prayer is to simply sit in the silence and allow yourself to be transformed by god's presence acting through you. Rich Lewis is an author, long time student of centering prayer, and a centering prayer coach. During our interview we discuss how silence transforms us from the inside out, and how no matter what your religion the silence is the same for all of us. The silence is the "divine therapy," as centering prayer founder Thomas Keating once said. When we sit in the silence, we are sitting in god's presence. It is in that presence that our subconscious mind is detoxed and our mental chatter begins to calm, and we are reunited with our true self. Centering prayer is an ancient form of Christian meditation revitalized in the 1970s by Trappist monk Thomas Keating and others. Though it has Christian roots, centering prayer is something anyone can do no matter your religious background. During my conversation with Rich we also discuss how the mystical Christian lineage differs from the mainstream. Many of us have a "god wound" from early Christian indoctrination that didn't make sense to our hearts, minds, or souls. Those of us who come to a spiritual path later in life often do so because of a mystical experience of the reality of god as love and oneness. During my interview with Rich we talked about how mystical Christians have been drinking at that same well of faith all along. Check out Rich's new book on centering prayer entitled "Sitting with God: A Journey to Your True Self Through Centering Prayer" below: https://silenceteaches.com/about-the-books/ #centeringprayer #contemplation #silence

It’s difficult to spread the gospel if you haven’t read it. Dave “Too Hot to Handle, Too Cold to Hold” VanVickle and I talk about why it’s vital to regularly read Scripture and how to immerse yourself in the Word. We want to hear from you! Email us at eksb@ascensionpress.com with your story, question, or comment—or if you’ve got a new nickname for Dave. Snippet from the Show “The most effective evangelists are those who are steeped in the Word. Evangelization is the fruit of encounter, meditation, and study of Sacred Scripture. It’s an overflow of what’s in your heart because of your total commitment to the Word of God.” SHOWNOTES If using Scripture to prepare a talk: * Take the theme and look for the scriptural narrative around it. * Let the Scripture narrative guide the talk, don’t use the Scriptures just to prove your point. * It is important to be regularly reading, studying, and praying the Scriptures in order to feel comfortable with them. If worried about misrepresenting Scripture or using it the wrong way: * Look for outside resources to explain Scripture. * Look to Navarre Bible commentary, the Fathers of the Church and Barclay’s commentary on the Bible for help. * Read through the Scriptures every day, even if just a small amount. 5 Practical Tips 1. Find an image of Catholic artwork and meditate upon it. 2. Get the book A Father Who Keeps His Promises by Scott Hahn, or Walking with God: A Journey through the Bible by Tim Gray and Jeff Cavins to read through and get the big picture of the Bible. 3. Pray for the priests in Africa who are being murdered. 4. Discuss with someone the chapters in the books mentioned in the second tip. 5. Memorize John 1:1-5. But when actor director Nick Loeb told the truth about the events of 1973, he and his production crew faced opposition, rejection, and no shortage of hatred thrown their way. Interviewed by God: A Journey to Freedom with Beth Banning Interviewed by God is an account of Beth Banning's journey of spiritual awakening—her conscious connection with God and the lessons she's learned along the way. Written in a format in which the author is “interviewed by God,” the book is meant to be a mirror for the reader to reflect their own experiences back to them, and a gentle guide for those who are at the precipice of an extraordinary adventure and are either scared to jump or who hunger for answers and understanding.  From a very young age, Banning experienced phenomena that could only be called extraordinary: she's received messages from spirit animals, felt kundalini energy awaken in her, and experienced dimensional shifts in her awareness that have allowed her to witness what only a few have seen. She was visited by totem animals, took ritualistic baths, and visited shamans and healers; she experienced ecstatic states and received messages; her ego mind began to battle against her higher mind. As she experienced her spiritual journey, a small voice within guided her. With doubt as her constant companion she continued to follow her inner promptings, which led her to higher levels of truth about her connection to herself and the world and reality as we know it.   Beth Banning is a best-selling author, inspirational speaker and spiritual catalyst. She has just published her new book titled, Interviewed by God, A Journey to Freedom and is also the author of numerous other books including; the Meditation for Life Series and the Marriage Guide Series. Aviya Kushner grew up in a Hebrew-speaking family, reading the Bible in the original Hebrew and debating its meaning over the dinner table. From differences in the Ten Commandments to a less ambiguous reading of the creation story, the English translation often felt like another book entirely from the one she had grown up with. Kushner's interest in the differences between the ancient language and the modern one gradually became an obsession. She began what became a ten-year project of reading different versions of the Hebrew Bible in English and traveling the world in the footsteps of the great biblical translators, trying to understand what compelled them to take on a lifetime project that was often considered heretical and in some cases resulted in their deaths. In The Grammar of God: A Journey into the Words and Worlds of the Bible (Spiegel and Grau, 2015) Kushner illustrates how the differences in translation affect our understanding of our culture's most important written work. A fascinating look at language and the beliefs we hold most dear, The Grammar of God is also a moving tale about leaving home and returning to it, both literally and through reading. Aviya Kushner has worked as a travel columnist for The International Jerusalem Post, and her poems and essays have appeared in The Gettysburg Review, Harvard Review, Partisan Review, and The Wilson Quarterly. She teaches at Columbia College Chicago and is a contributing editor at A Public Space and a mentor for the National Yiddish Book Center. Learn more about your ad choices.
