Send us a textCold bites, a promise binds, and a furnace roars—this is the Yukon at human scale. We start with a candid look at why facing reality beats denial, then follow the trail into Robert Service's world, where men who moil for gold wrestle with fear, loyalty, and the math of survival. Our reading of The Cremation of Sam McGee sets the pace: a vow made on a brutal Christmas run, a body lashed to a sleigh, and a punchline so warm it melts the dread. We unpack the craft that makes this ballad unforgettable. The rolling meter pulls like a dog team, the imagery flips from ice-burn to furnace blaze, and the narrative beats keep tension taut until humor snaps it. Along the way, we trace Service's journey from British Columbia to Whitehorse, and the Gold Rush context that fed his voice—rough camps, frozen rivers, and the stern code that says a promise made is a debt unpaid. The poem's twist—Sam smiling in the heat—lands as both macabre and merciful, reminding us that stories help carry loads the trail alone cannot.Grounded in history, we connect the ballad to a likely source: Dr. Leonard Sedgeon's account of cremating a miner aboard a frozen steamer, transformed into the Alice May for poetic rhythm. That detail anchors the legend in real Yukon logistics—when the ground is iron, fire becomes grace. If you care about frontier ethics, narrative poetry, or how humor redeems hardship, this journey offers rich terrain. Battery recalls. Karma money. A lost wallet that may or may not have entered another dimension. In this episode, we're hopping timelines at full speed — from a Porta-Lisa extravaganza that starts iconic and goes very wrong, to a Girl on the Train moment that… yep… also goes wrong. We chat crystal grids, spaghetti confetti (don't ask… actually, do), childhood potholder makers making a cosmic comeback, and why solar flares might be personally attacking our nervous systems lately. There's sudden waking up and relocating energy, animals casually posting up outside our houses (including five deer just vibing), and a surprise shout-out to a red fox's birthday

The Truth About Cremation: What the Funeral Industry Won’t Tell You Subtitle: How Christians Should Face Death: Biblical Wisdom from a Pastor and Funeral Worker In this episode of The Patriarchy Podcast, Pastor Joseph Spurgeon is joined by Pastor Randy Redkey—funeral home worker, church planter, and faithful brother in Christ. They break down the shocking truth behind the funeral industry, the rise of cremation, and why Christians must return to biblical burial. You’ll hear firsthand what really happens behind closed doors, how pagan practices are creeping into Christian funerals, and why burial is more than tradition—it’s a declaration of faith in the resurrection of the body.
David Sconce was not just a mortician. He was the self-proclaimed "Cremation King of California," running what looked like a booming funeral business. In reality, he operated a cremation cartel built on greed, intimidation, and shocking abuse of the dead.Investigators uncovered mass cremations, stolen prosthetics, and allegations that Sconce's crew pulled gold teeth, sold body parts, and trafficked organs on the black market. The truth unraveled inside his desert crematory, where authorities found evidence of dozens of illegal cremations and widespread mutilation of corpses.Sconce eventually pled guilty to multiple crimes, including illegal cremations, theft, and desecration of bodies. But HBO's new documentary "The Mortician" raises disturbing new questions. At the end of the film, Sconce drops cryptic hints about three unsolved murders, including the poisoning death of rival mortician Tim Waters. Was he bragging? Confessing? Or revealing the true depth of his criminal empire?Follow True Crime Recaps for more disturbing cases that challenge everything we think we know.

What if death wasn't something to fear — but a doorway to freedom? In Bali, I witnessed something that completely shifted how I see loss, grief, and letting go.There was no sorrow, no heaviness — only color, laughter, and music. It was unlike anything I'd ever seen, and it made me question everything I thought I knew about death.Maybe letting go isn't an ending after all… maybe it's something more.If this message speaks to you, please share it with a friend or someone navigating grief — it might bring them peace. In this Friday Thinking Talmudist episode on Talmud Bava Metzia 84b, Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe explores the extraordinary life and legacy of Rebbe Elazar ben Rebbe Shimon, a sage whose body remained undecayed in his attic for 18–22 years after death due to his unparalleled righteousness—his vessel solely for Torah and mitzvot, not worldly indulgence. The Talmud recounts how his absence as community marshal prevented women from receiving halachic rulings on purity, halting procreation, echoing stories like Rav Moshe Feinstein's eight-year childless period without a mikvah. Rebbe Elazar's wife observed blood when hairs fell and a worm from his ear, which he explained in a dream as minor punishment for once failing to protest slander against Torah scholars, teaching the grave obligation to defend the righteous and halt lashon hara—worse for the listener who enables its spread than the speaker. The narrative highlights Rebbe Elazar's posthumous miracles: a heavenly voice from the attic resolved disputes, interpreted as divine inspiration guiding just settlements; his unburied body protected the city from wild animals; and a serpent guarded his father's cave until burial. Parallels include the Gaon of Vilna's perfectly preserved body and the Chafetz Chaim's gravesite preventing miscarriages, underscoring burial's sanctity over cremation, which denies body-soul reunion at resurrection. Rabbi Wolbe passionately advocates for tahara (purification rites) by the Chevra Kadisha as a profound mitzvah, preparing the deceased for heavenly judgment, and recommends Rabbi Doron Kornbluth's book Cremation or Burial? for spiritual and environmental insights.Ultimately, the Gemara contrasts Rebbe Elazar's humility and self-imposed suffering to spare Jewish pain with Rebbe Shimon ben Gamaliel's self-description as a "lion son of a fox," proving true anavah (humility) among greats like the Bnei Beteira and Yonatan ben Shaul. Rabbi Wolbe ties this to defending Torah scholars amid Israel's yeshiva draft debates—spiritual pillars merit protection like Pharaoh exempted learners—urging pride in Judaism as Rosh Hashanah approaches, crowning Hashem as eternal King with majesty far surpassing earthly royalty._____________The Thinking Talmudist Podcast shares select teachings of Talmud in a fresh, insightful and meaningful way. Send us a textWhen a loved one or close friend dies, there are many practical matters to deal with – giving notice of death, funeral arrangements, and all manner of things that are very emotional and sometimes quite jarringly 'clinical'. More often than not, you're shell-shocked, not quite yourself. It's a very difficult time.At the Catholic parish of Our Lady Star of the Sea in Whitley Bay near Newcastle, they have developed something special: a Consolation Team that walks alongside grieving families during one of life's most challenging moments. For this 'Art of Dying Well' podcast, we talk to parish priest Monsignor Andrew Faley whose primary concern is to best meet the needs of his parishioners at this difficult time. He is very collaborative with the lay people in his community and sidesteps the common approach of "Leave it to Father" when it comes to funeral planning and accompaniment. The Consolation Team grew naturally from the parish's pastoral care work, and we're delighted to be able to talk to two skilled parishioners from the team who work closely with Fr Andrew - Joe and Pauline.Parishioners tend to have been in parishes rather longer than priests, and relationships have often built up which can be very helpful in supporting grieving families.

Click here to join The Parajunkie Fam TODAY! Zero ads, exclusive content and so much more! Happy Halloween! In this week's Ghostmail, Madison, Chris, and JT read two spine-tingling stories sent in by our Parajunkie family — and trust us, both of these will haunt you long after the outro.Story One: “Ghost Whisper” & “The Nope Ghost” — from Ultra Parajunkie ColeyColey's been able to hear and see spirits since childhood, guided by her late brother Timmy. Her first story, Ghost Whisper, takes place inside Olinger Funeral, Cremation & Cemetery in Westminster, Colorado — where a man's restless spirit realizes she can hear him mid-service and begs her to speak to his family. What follows is one of the most intense psychic shut-downs we've ever heard. Her second, The Nope Ghost, dives into a haunting that turns dark fast. A beautiful Colorado home that radiates anger… a whisper so vile she's never repeated it… and a horrifying revelation that a serial killer once lived there. This one is part haunting, part true crime — and a full-blown reminder to listen to your intuition.Story Two: “He Keeps Finding Me” — from Leeah in Manitoba, CanadaLeeah was born between worlds. Since age 12, she's heard spirits, seen orbs, and been visited by something darker — a shadowy male presence that's followed her from home to home for decades. She's smudged, she's prayed, she's moved across provinces… but the entity always finds her again. It even showed itself to her son, triggering panic so intense he was taken from school by ambulance. Now, years later, Leeah still wakes at 3:13 AM, haunted by the same energy that's been stalking her since childhood — and she just wants to know: why her?Send in your Ghostmail today! ghostmail@hauntedcitypodcast.com
Many people today are turning to cremation as an easy, low-cost alternative to Christian burial. But is this really allowed by the Church? And if so, what do you need to know before you do this? Join Fr. Chris Alar as he gives an interesting summary of this important topic.

AP correspondent Julie Walker reports New jersey becomes 14th state to allow human composting.
On this episode, Marc talks to Ellen Koskoff, author of "Bittersweet Sounds of Passage: Balinese Gamelan Angklung Cremation Music," published in July of 2025. It's a fascinating look into a specific kind of gamelan music in Bali that is an essential part of cremation ceremonies, performed by village members who don't even consider themselves musicians. Koskoff learned to play this music herself by living in Bali and joining in with ensembles there, revealing a tradition that is unlike anything in Western culture. In the process, she captures the perspective of the people playing in these groups, who regard the music as essential to the dharma that sustains all things. As Ellen writes, "The history and meaning of gamelan angklung and its importance to contemporary Balinese cremations is hazy; written sources, recordings, and other forms of scholarship are almost nonexistent...yet, this music, most often performed by everyday villagers, is considered by all Balinese to be a necessary component of village life and death."You can buy Ellen's book here.We hope you enjoy Marc's conversation with Ellen Koskoff!
