We're joined by the artistic director of Dallas International Film Festival, James Faust!! He gives us the rundown on all of the exciting events happening tonight and this weekend, and what movies really stand out to him (out of the 400 he's seen!!). We also do a quick hit on Bon Jovi claiming his son isn't getting movie roles because of technology.
'Bastards of Soul' is making it's Texas premiere this weekend at the Dallas International Film Festival!! Also, a look at 3 local bars that are among the best in the country!
James is the artistic director of the Dallas International Film Festival, which runs from April 25 through May 2. We talked about how many movies he had to watch to pick the 145 (so far) that will screen this year. We talked about how much he cries and why his back is giving him so much trouble and whether Jennifer Aniston and Vince Vaughn get back together at the end of The Break-Up. But James also made us talk about this year's DIFF lineup, which features a bunch of world premieres, including a "30 for 30" documentary about—ugh—Dude Perfect. (Not to be confused with Dude, Sweet.) Get in here and get your ears all over it. Right now: rate and review the podcast. Then subscribe to D Magazine. Seriously.

The film also premiered at the Dallas International Film Festival and continued its run at New York Cinefest. David's films often explore themes of identity, paradox, and disillusionment, as seen in the “The Cocoon.” In the short film, he tells the story of a man who inadvertently creates more of a mess as he tries to clean his room. David wrote, directed, and produced this animated short film, which is his first animation directorial, in association with Confidential Creative. Featuring over 11,000 frames of hybrid hand-drawn and computer-generated animation, the film marks David's directorial debut in the animation genre. Among various awards and accolades, the film is also currently nominated for a Remi Award from WorldFest Houston International Film Festival. David's work is both imaginative and thought-provoking, which he is excited to prove further in his upcoming live action short film, “Paint It Black,” an existential dark-comedy about two brothers who can't stand each other on a fishing trip gone wrong. Our movie expert JJ Jackson went to the Dallas International Film Festival and gives us a recap!
Today's episode features an in-depth conversation on a wide range of topics with Award-winning Actress, Writer, Director & Author, KATIE BOLAND. Chosen by Elle Canada as one of the three Canadians to watch, as an actress she has more than 80 credits to her name. A multiple award winner, she's won a Canadian Screen Award, was a TIFF Rising Star, a Birks Diamond Woman In Film, named Best Emerging Actress by the Toronto Film Screen and one of Playbacks Ten To Watch. Long Story, Short a ten-episode web-series Boland created and wrote based on her collection of personal essays premiered on Hulu and was recently re-released on Youtube and garnered hundreds of thousands of hits and called “the best new thing on the internet." For her performance, Boland won a Canadian Screen Award. Long Story, Short was nominated for Best Webseries at the Raindance Film Festival. Also an author, Boland's collection of short stories, Eat Your Heart Out was chosen by the Globe and Mail as one of three hot summer reads, “Actress-turned-writer Katie Boland is a notable new voice in Canadian fiction...a vibrant collection, populated by well-drawn characters who are broken but bursting with life. Reminiscent of Hemingway's sharp minimalism, paired with Kerouac's verve, Eat Your Heart Out tackles being alive in the here and now, with sterling writing and stellar voices. Boland is a bold new old-soul.” Boland's directorial debut, short film Lolz-Ita, that she wrote and starred in, had it's North American premiere at the Austin Film Festival and was nominated for Best Narrative Short. It was also a part of TIFF's Short Cuts: Share Her Journey, which highlights the “most exciting emerging female film makers in the world” as well as the Whistler Film Festival where it was nominated for the EDA Short Film Award which recognizes female film makers. It was nominated for jury prizes at the Dallas International Film Festival and Cucalorus. It was also chosen as Short Of the Week, who said, “Boland portrays the title character with commendable subtlety, fleshing out the confusion of the young woman compellingly. It's a complicated duality to inhabit... Her performance has the power to make or break the film, and Boland wows.” Most recently, it was chosen as a Vimeo Staff Pick. Boland is currently in post production on a new short Twins and she directed, wrote and starred in the pilot ReFrame for Refinery 29 x Kate Spade. Boland was the youngest person chosen by Canadian Heritage Minister Melanie Joly to be on a panel of cultural experts who helped steer a sweeping review of cultural policies. Recently, Boland was also on the cover of IndieScreen magazine as one of Canada's “most impressive young producers.” Katie splits her time between Toronto and Los Angeles. She has two feature films to be released in the coming year and three television series she wrote and created in development at CTV, Chorus and UCP. She is currently editing her feature debut We're All In This Together that she wrote, directed, produced and starred as twins in. James is the artistic director for the Dallas International Film Festival. That means he watches about 600 movies every year. It also means that he has a great story about a wild night with Harry Dean Stanton (R.I.P.). We also talked about what happened to him when, as a kid, he saw E.T. fives times in row and the odd interaction he had one time in a hotel room with Joan Jett when they were both working on a episode of Walker, Texas Ranger. Oh, and we talked about some of his favorite films that will screen at DIFF 2022.

Happy New Year Festival Family! We finally made it to 2021, and we are kicking off the year right. We're big movie buffs here at Festival Pass, so it's always a delight to have someone on the inside who knows the biz. On this week's episode, we have the artistic director of one of the most exclusive film festivals in the country. It was our honor to start the year with professional film binge watcher, James Faust. James has been a part of the Dallas film scene for some time now. His love of movies has been the catalyst to not only his success, but all of the film festivals that he has been involved in in his career. A Red Raider through and through (despite his bio claiming he's a Las Vegas Raiders fan), James acquired degrees in Theatre and Telecommunications at Texas Tech University. Later, he furthered his education in the arts by receiving a degree at Southern Methodist University (SMU) in Cinema Studies. His determination and affection for storytelling has led to his ascent as a film professional, and earned him recognition at the very best film festivals across the world. “James Faust likes to rock and watch movies,” a fitting quote from his biography. James has been a speaker and served on many film festival juries. On average, James says that he watches about five films a day during the process of choosing movies for these events; his record is seven in one day! Analyzing films isn't the only thing that James can do. He has also worked as a grip on classic television shows and movies like “Walker Texas Ranger” and “Armageddon”. James has been in attendance at Cannes, Toronto Film Festival, Sundance, and South by Southwest. James is most known for his work and accomplishments at the Dallas International Film Festival (DIFF). James started as DIFF's (then called AFI Dallas) Senior Programmer, back when the festival first began in 2006. What makes the Dallas International Film Festival so unique, is the diversity of the films, and the support that it continues to get from volunteers and sponsors. DIFF has screened over 2000 films, with representation from over 50 countries. The festival hands out over $1,000,000 in prizes, so if your work is accepted, you can win money, camera packages, and the heat that comes with screening your art on a colossal stage. Even during COVID, film festivals are events that can benefit from live streaming, and that's exactly the direction that DIFF is taken. Unfortunately, film submissions are closed this year, but you can still enjoy the great movies by purchasing a ticket for June, and watch films on their virtual cinema. “The first couple years, it was incredible how we were building a new film community like they've done in Austin.” - James Faust Catch the interview on Festival Pass Stories! https://festivalpass.com/stories You can find James on: Twitter- https://twitter.com/jamesfaustDIFF Dallas International Film Festival's Website- https://dallasfilm.org/diff Dallas International Film Festival's Twitter- https://twitter.com/WeAreDallasFilm/ Dallas International Film Festival's Instagram- https://www.instagram.com/WeAreDallasFilm/ Connect with Festival Pass! ABOUT THE WE ARE ALL HOMELESS PROJECT The WE ARE ALL HOMELESS project began in 1993 due to the awkwardness I felt when I’d pull up to an intersection and encounter a person holding a sign, asking for help. Like many, I wrestled with whether or not I was doing good by giving them money. Mostly I struggled with my moral obligations, and how my own choices contributed in conscious or unconscious ways to the poverty I was witnessing. I struggled with the unfairness of the lives people are born into, the physical, mental and psychological handicaps. In my struggle, I avoided eye contact with those on the street, unwilling to really see them, and in doing so avoided seeing parts of myself. That began to change once I began asking them if they would sell their signs. My relationship to the homeless has been powerfully and permanently altered. The conversations and connections have left an indelible mark on my heart. I still wrestle with personal questions regarding generosity, goodness, compassion, and guilt. And what it means to be homeless: practically, spiritually, emotionally? Is home a physical place, a building, a structure, a house? Or is it a state of being, a sense of safety, of being provided for, of identity? I see these signs as signposts of my own journey, inward and outward, of reconciling my own life with my judgments about those experiencing homelessness. weareallhomeless.org

Director Justin Chon and actors Tiffany Chu, Octavio Pizano, and Teddy Lee discuss their new film MS. PURPLE with moderator SuChin Pak. Recorded at Landmark's NuArt Theatre on 9/6/19. SYNOPSIS: Ms. Purple, from award-winning filmmaker Justin Chon (Gook), is the poignant story of the family loyalties of an Asian American brother and sister, set in a dreamy vision of Los Angeles' Koreatown, reminiscent of Wong Kar-wai's In the Mood for Love. Kasie (Tiffany Chu) struggles to take care of her comatose father at home, refusing to put him in hospice, because he raised her and her brother when their mother abandoned them. Kasie works as a Koreatown karaoke hostess, making good money keeping obnoxious drunken businessmen happy, and is well able to handle herself, but when her father's in-home nurse quits, she is desperate. She calls her estranged brother Carey (Teddy Lee) to come home and help care for their father, and he agrees. As they reconnect over their dying father, Kasie and Carey confront the deep emotional wounds of their difficult shared past, attempting to mend their relationship. Winner, Grand Jury Prize for Narrative Feature, Dallas International Film Festival.
