That's why I recommend Magnesium Breakthrough by BiOptimizers. In this week's interview, Derek Champagne talks with Shark Tank veteran Steven Sashen. Steven talks with Derek about building an international business, stepping in the Shark Tank, and even his days of stand up comedy.Steven is the developer and CEO of Xero Shoes • Your Original Barefootware – www.XeroShoes.com. Steven and his wife, Lena Phoenix, started the “Barefoot… PLUS!” sandal business in late 2009; he had returned to sprinting 2 years earlier, at age 45, and experienced almost continuous injuries. An experiment with running barefoot cured the injuries and improved his times. Knowing about the Tarahumara indians in Mexico, who run hundreds of miles in sandals made of tire scraps lashed to their feet, Steven created a high-tech upgrade of that product and launched it online. With nothing but Search Engine Marketing and Social Media Marketing, Xero Shoes has become the best-selling running sandal in the world.Steven's commitment is to making footwear that lets customers connect with the ground and “Feel The World,” fits perfectly, express wearer's personalities, outlasts any other footwear, and uses fewer resources than any other footwear. He's also committed to discovering and teaching the best techniques for teaching natural movement — for walking, hiking, and running.Prior to jumping into the sandal business, Steven was an internationally-known Internet marketing expert, Search Engine and Social Media marketing consultant, and software designer. He also co-hosted the Emmy award winning, internationally syndicated TV show, Disk Doctors.Steven is also a Masters All-American sprinter, one of the fastest 50+ year olds in the United States.Learn more at www.xeroshoes.com

Now and then, you have the chance to meet extraordinary people and learn more from their story than you ever thought possible. This conversation with Steven Sashen of Xero Shoes is one of those opportunities! https://youtu.be/ZxaGb90SUtY In this episode, we're talking with Steven Sashen about shoes, speed, and success. He's one of the fastest men over 55 in the country, co-founder of Xero Shoes that's creating not only a brand, but a movement, he's also turned down a $400K funding offer on Shark Tank. So if you want to learn from a successful entrepreneur, so you can build a life and business you love … tune in below! Table of contentsIn the Business of Making Xero ShoesFrom DIY to Worldwide RecognitionTurning Down Shark TankXero Shoes: A Fast-Moving CompanyChance vs. ControlTaking Responsibility of Your FinanceCash Flow in BusinessXero ShoesAbout Steven Sashen We believe that his ability to create a community and a movement is something that you can benefit from as business owners and entrepreneurs. No matter where you're at in the journey, we think you'll find something valuable in this conversation with Steven Sashen. Enjoy the show notes below. In the Business of Making Xero Shoes When you think of how a business gets its start, you probably think of all the planning, designing, and prep work that goes into a brand. However, that's not quite how things happened for Sashen. [3:27] “The way it actually happened is my favorite thing, which was a complete accident. So what happened was...a little over 13 years ago, I was 45, I got back into sprinting after a 30-year break, which I don't really recommend. I was getting injured constantly for like two years. And finally, a friend of mine, who's like a world champion runner...said, ‘Try running barefoot and see if you learn anything about why you might be getting injured.'” This planted the seed, and Steven discovered that running barefoot allowed him to correct his movements with more ease and fluidity. From DIY to Worldwide Recognition When Steven Sashen finally hit his stride, everything changed. That's when he knew he must lock-in the benefits of this natural movement. He had heard of natives in Mexico who ran with sandals made from scraps of tire. So he created his own version. With some rubber from a shoe repair shop and cords from Home Depot, he created what we could consider his first prototype. Here and there, friends would request their own. Then one day, he was approached with the opportunity that started it all. A barefoot running coach was writing a book, and said that if Sashen treated this hobby like a business and made a website, he'd feature it in the book. In the following three and a half years, Xero Shoes became a DIY sandal-kit company. Now, Xero Shoes sells a complete line of casual and performance shoes, boots, and sandals. Turning Down Shark Tank Early on, Xero Shoes appeared on Shark Tank. And though they were offered $400,000 Sashen turned the money down. This sparked a lot of discussion on whether he made the right decision. [12:38] “People kept telling us all along that we should be on the show, we didn't even know what they were talking about. And then we found the show.” Steven Sashen realized that, were they to get on Shark Tank, regardless of the outcome, it would be free exposure to millions of people. [13:37] “The thing that was really valuable is that once they told us they wanted us on the show, it really made us focus on who were are, what we did, and what we wanted.” [15:40] "So the key moment though, was that thing with Kevin, where he offered us 400 grand for half the company, [and] we were offering 8% of the company. We had done a lot of research about valuations of footwear brands. And so we knew what the range for yes and no was, we were very negotiable. We just didn't get that far, and so it was a non-starter.” Xero Shoes: A Fast-Moving Company

Steven Sashen is the CEO of Xero Shoes. Xero Shoes is a type and brand of lightweight minimalist footwear for walking, running, and athletics, the footwear has thin and flexible soles that are contoured to the shape of the human foot. Xero Shoes was featured on ABC's Shark Tank and gained success after the show's appearance. A high-school sprinter, Steven Sashen got back into the sport after a 30-year break. However, after two years of injury-prone competition, he joined a local barefoot running club in Boulder, CO at the suggestion of a friend who gave him a copy of Born To Run by Christopher McDougall. As a result of running barefoot, his gait changed and injuries abated. Sashen wanted to continue the barefoot experience in areas which required foot covering, so he developed his own modern huarache-style sandal similar to those worn by the Tarahumara Indians in Mexico’s Copper Canyon, consisting of a thin rubber sole sourced from Vibram in Italy and nylon-polypropylene laces (this original style is now sold as the Xero Shoes "Cherry" in the classic kit). The Xero Shoes have been my favorite minimalist shoes and shoes in general. I learned a lot speaking with Steven the first time so I was glad to be able share some of the information he shared with me.

If you don't know physics, you shouldn't be buying running shoes. I will tell you why, and I'm also going to teach you a little bit of physics, enough to be really obnoxious at parties. And just a few minutes here on this episode of The MOVEMENT Movement, the podcast for people who want to know the truth about what it takes to have a happy, healthy, strong body starting with the feet first, cause those things are your foundation. Here's where we break down the propaganda, the mythology, sometimes the outright lies that you've been told about what it takes to run, to walk, to hike, to dance, to do CrossFit, to do yoga, to power, lift, to do dance, dance, revolution, whatever it is that you like to do and do that enjoyably healthily and efficiently. If there was just science proving that running barefoot, or in truly minimalist footwear was good for you, then everybody was switch, right? Okay. We're going to take a look at that in today's episode of The MOVEMENT Movement, the podcast for people who want to know the truth about what it takes to have a happy, healthy, strong body starting with your feet first, because those things are your foundation. Nike sponsored a study, they call it an independent study that they sponsored, which in and of itself is kind of fascinating. I talked about it, the React Infinity Run and they said that that shoe reduces injury rates by over 50% and if you look at the research, I just saw the abstract. I didn't see the entire research paper, but according to the abstract that the researcher gave me, it's true that that shoe reduced injury rates by 50% but that's not the important part. The important part is what they did is, they compared people in that shoe to people in Nike's best selling motion controlled running shoe and yes, the React Infinity Run, the people running in it had a 50% lower injury rate than the people in the other shoe. This is during a 12 week half marathon training program and people in the other shoe, over 30% of them got injured in 12 weeks, actually in less than 12 weeks because the only way that they could have done the study or qualified as injured is having something like three or more missed sessions in a row. So basically it had to be no more than 10 maybe 11 weeks tops, roughly 10 weeks. So in less than 10 weeks, approximately over 30% of the people who got injured in the best selling motion control running shoe and in the React Infinity, okay, about 15% got injured. How is this good? Listen in, I'm your host Steven Sashen. Remember to join the tribe and subscribe at https://jointhemovementmovement.com.
You've just gotten out of big, thick, padded motion control shoes. Maybe you're running barefoot, maybe you're running in a truly minimal shoe, like Xero Shoes. You've had incredible experiences. Injuries might have gone away. You feel better, you're having more fun. So you want to tell everyone, right? Yeah. Shut up. Don't do that. We're going to talk about why on today's episode of The MOVEMENT Movement, the podcast for people who want to know the truth about what it takes to have a happy, healthy, strong body, starting with the feet first.

Modern athletic shoes seem to be constantly changing and improving, with the newest versions usually coming out with extra padding in certain locations and backed by claims of being good for your body by absorbing the shock of running. But does anyone ever ask to see the evidence that supports the claims these major shoe companies are making? Is there anything to be said for less padding…for a shoe that allows the foot to function more in the way that it would without a shoe at all? According to Steven Sashen and a growing body of research, the answer is a resounding yes. Steven Sashen is now the head of Xero Shoes, a company that focuses on letting your foot do what it was meant to do: flex, bend and actually feel the surface it's contacting. The modern shoe restricts this movement and prevents this sensation, essentially immobilizing your foot, and as a result, weakening it over time. In today's episode, Sashen discusses the ins and outs of his products, the science behind their design and how an understanding of human anatomy guided it, and his personal experience with and without Xero Shoes. We all know how to walk, right? I mean, you know, one foot in front of the other. We've been doing this since we were babies. What's the big deal? Maybe we don't know how to walk as well as we could, or as well as you think you are. We all know how to walk, right? I mean, you know, one foot in front of the other. We've been doing this since we were babies. What's the big deal? Maybe we don't know how to walk as well as we could, or as well as you think you are. Here's a couple of weird questions; Can you walk for hours without a problem? Like many hours? Many, many miles without a problem? When you do walk, what muscles feel like they are being used? Is it your butt, your hamstrings, or is it maybe your hip flexors and your calves? Maybe it's in your feet at the end of the long walk. Do your feet hurt? Can you walk for a long time barefoot? Can you walk for a long time in shoes? These are all important questions that we're going to dive into in today's episode of The MOVEMENT Movement podcast. You think you have five senses. I'm not even going to list them, because I can't remember what the hell they are. But maybe you have a sixth sense, and I don't mean ESP, that if you don't master and develop and practice could really impact your life in a very, very negative way. And we're going to find out more about that on today's episode of The MOVEMENT Movement podcast. Today I am talking to Jim Klopman, who has developed methods and systems and patents and equipment to improve athletic balance and athletic balances. Something far beyond what you get at physical therapy. Most balance training stops at physical therapy, Jim takes you all the way up to the Cirque du Soleil level, and finds that there's a direct correlation to balance, athletic performance, coordination and agility. And he's pretty convinced now that as you improve your balance, you also improve your vision. Should you be running longer, slower, or shorter, faster, which is better for your health. Let's take a look today at high intensity interval training in The MOVEMENT Movement podcast. People have been talking about it for a while but lately I've just been seeing more and more people coming out with courses on High Intensity Interval Training, and saying why doing high intensity intervals is better for you than running long, as doing long slow distance, whether you're running or on an elliptical or on a cycle, whatever it is. On today's episode, I have my friend, Dr. Bryan C. Heiderscheit, PT, PhD. We will be exploring something interesting. One of the many things we'll be exploring is; Could you improve your running and get rid of your injuries by moving faster without running faster? I know that sounds crazy, but we'll jump in and find out how that works. I'm Steven Sashen from the movement movement podcast. You can find move@jointhemovementmovement.com or all the various places where you can think of where you'd find join The Movement Movement if you actually, if you go to jointhemovementmovement.com, you'll see Twitter and Facebook and youtube and iTunes and everywhere else, and this is a podcast for people who want to learn the truth about how to move healthily, happily strong, have healthy, happy, strong bodies, and to cut through the mythology that people have been propagating that might keep you from doing that.
Hi, Steven Sashen here, and in this video, you're going to learn how to pick a good running shoe. The information comes from, in large part, this paper from the American College of Sports Medicine. It's also coming from experience that I have, so I'll be adding my editorial, but most of this is coming from the ACSM and their recommendations. So, let's just jump right in. The ACSM says “Running shoes should be selected after careful consideration. With so many brands and styles of shoes on the marketing today, it is important to find the best fit for your feet and needs. There is no ‘right shoe' that fits all runners. However, research and injury patterns have shown there are some general characteristics of a good, safe running shoe.” Now, before we get started, I want to warn you that what you're about to learn flies completely in the face of what you will hear from most people trying to sell you running shoes. You go to your average running shoe store; they will tell you the exact opposite of what you're about to hear. Remember, this is research coming from the American College of Sports Medicine, not someone who has been paid to say certain things from a running shoe company. Some may argue, “But you own a shoe company…” Trust me, you'll hear the difference between what I'm saying and what someone who's being paid to say things that are the opposite of what the American College of Sports Medicine is saying. Here we go. Find us online, go to jointhemovementmovement.com. You can participate in the conversation there, or that will point you to the various social media channels where you can engage with us on Twitter, on Facebook, on Youtube, et cetera, et cetera, et cetera. And if you have any questions or comments, or you want to tell me about someone who should be on the podcast, drop me an email, send it to move@jointhemovementmovement.com.
We all know the story of the boy who cried wolf, and at the end of the story, the villagers stopped running to find the nonexistent wolf, which didn't end up very well for the boy. Well, what if there was an industry that's been effectively and essentially crying wolf? The difference here is that every time they say, “if we keep running and we pull out our wallets and give them money to get the wolf, that isn't there.” Well, that's what we're going to be talking about on today's episode of The MOVEMENT Movement, the podcast for people who want to know the truth about how to have a healthy, happy, strong body by doing what bodies are made to do, and that is move. I'm Steven Sashen. I'm the CEO of Xero Shoes. That's XeroShoes.com, and I'm here to help you do whatever it is you'd like to do…walk, hike, do yoga, do CrossFit, paddleboard. No Shoes, No Problem Have you tried running barefoot yet? Over the past several years there has been a craze with minimal footwear. Whether it’s shoes that claim “zero drop,” shoes that look like toe socks, or shoes that are little more than a piece of rubber, shoe makers are claiming that shoes have been the cause of injury for years and that their shoe is the solution. But who is right? Can we really blame our shoes for all our injuries, our bad form or our blisters? On this podcast we’ve interviewed footwear owners, doctors, coaches and athletes who all have answers of their own. Is it possible that they could all be right? That by following all the suggestions we’ve heard, we can have the optimal running life? In fact, most running tips we’ve heard aren’t contradictory. Getting enough rest, wearing shoes that don’t constrict, eating a balanced diet and eating enough, running with a smile, finding joy in the journey, incorporating strength training, taking care of our mind—all of these can be done without taking away from one another. Today we are adding one more for you to consider. We break down the reasons why running without shoes could be a solution for your reasons and we discuss a few myths behind running barefoot. Join us as Steven Sashen, one of the fastest men in America over 50, tells us why he ditched his shoes and then started his own shoe company. Shoe-Related Injuries Steven began his shoeless running career as he was getting back into running after decades of inactivity. After dealing with several running-related injuries his friend recommended running without shoes as a type of diagnosis tool. Steven started running short distances barefoot and would change his posture, stride, or foot positioning just based on how he felt. If he got a blister running, he would change how he stepped and soon stopped getting blisters entirely. Better yet, his recurring injuries seemed to melt away. As lifelong sprinter Steven hated running long distances, but when he ran barefoot, he found himself running three or four miles at a time and loving it. He began running in thin homemade sandals when he ran on really tough terrain and soon after had an opportunity to make shoes for others. Why Run Barefoot? Shortly after he went barefoot, Sashen began doing research on why he was feeling so much better and why his injuries went away. He came to the conclusion that not being able to feel the ground with our feet is big contributor to bad posture and injuries. The information passed from our feet to our brain is crucial in how our body reacts to different terrains. “[When] you put a bunch of padding between you and the ground you are essentially making your feet deaf,” says Steven. He goes on to explain that for thousands of years, the only footwear humans created was basic foot protection. These basic sandals still allowed for that feel which the brain actively uses to help decide how to place our feet and when to step lightly. How Can I Start Running Barefoot? If you are interested in giving barefoot running a go, Steven recommends running for 20-30 seconds at a time to begin. Find a flat surface and let your feet and body get used to the feeling. He says that it’s more about becoming aware of how we place our feet than it is about building up calluses. There isn’t a real need to slowly reduce the thickness of your shoes either, simply start running and walking without shoes more frequently. As your body adjusts to moving around without footwear, you may find yourself adjusted your cadence, and feeling your legs comes underneath your body more naturally. “Let your body be your coach,” says Steven, “A good coach will tell you, the only way he or she can do their job well is by getting good data.” So, what do you think? Going to give barefoot running a go? If you do, let us know how it goes. But don’t blame us when you get kicked out of your local grocery store.

Lena Phoenix and Steven Sashen are sprinting with their fast-scaling business Xero Shoes, and today on Valentine’s Day we get a peek inside the lives of a “Couplepreneur”, how they manage their love of business and the business of love, and why they rejected Kevin O’Leary’s offer of $400,000 on Shark Tank. This episode is the first in a series of weekly Wings Of Inspired Business interviews with married entrepreneurs. What is it like to juggle it all? What makes it work?
Lena is Co-Founder and CEO of Feel the World Inc, makers of Xero Shoes. She talks about the pros and cons of co-founding a business with her husband. On today’s show we are talking with Sashen Guneratna from PWC’s Capital Projects and Infrastructure Group in Canada. Sashen provided a great overview of the market, how it has grown from the crash of 2008 and the significant pipeline of opportunities now available. He then dived into the specifics of the healthcare and transport sectors and finished up by providing an insight into just how competitive the funding market is in that part of the world.
Sure, it had been well over fifteen years since Steven Sashen had practiced sprinting, but he wanted to give the sport another try. Within weeks his legs were so sore he was going to give up. A friend told him to give it another go, this time without his shoes. Steven’s pain disappeared as soon as he started running barefoot. He felt sure there must be other people suffering as he had. A day of research and building a simple website was all the proof he needed that minimalist shoes were much more than a viable business. Xero Shoes, the company Steven co-founded with his wife, Lena Phoenix, has gone on to create a revolution in athletic footwear that has left every major shoe company scrambling to catch up. And Steven knew from the start what his idea was worth, so much so that when he appeared on Shark Tank, he confidently turned down a $400,000 offer from Kevin O'Leary. Listen up as Steven Sashen lets Matt and Joe in on what it’s really like on the set of Shark Tank, how to know if you’re wearing the wrong shoes, and why you have to have the courage to analyze the data in order to know the real value of your business. When you’re done listening, you can learn more about how to analyze data from our talks with Chris Mercer and Scott Desgrosseilliers. “The extent to which they don’t think I’m a threat... is directly correlated to the size of the gaping hole in the market we can fill before anyone pays attention.” - Steven Sashen Some Topics We Discussed Include: What professional actors know about lead gen The best room in the house to put your Oscar Award One way to become a top sprinter, even if you’re pushing fifty Surreal stories from behind the scenes of Shark Tank What you learn about yourself when you’re a T.V. contestant Why fifty-year-old shoes are better than most new ones How to move your brand into the mainstream Which shoe brands are actually doing minimalism right What your body is trying to tell you about your footwear The ways influencer marketing can ruin your marketing strategy A quick, easy technique with video to make high ranking pages How discounts could be the thing killing your revenue Contact STEVEN SASHEN: Xero Shoes Connect on Facebook Or Twitter References and Links Mentioned: Shark Tank Vivo Barefoot inov-8 Shoes Stumbling On Happiness by Daniel Gilbert Fooled By Randomness by Nassim Nicholas Taleb Unique Facebook Ad Strategies That Are Making People Rich – Curt Maly How To Earn $1,000 Every Time You’re Featured Somewhere – Steve Olsher You’re Using Google Analytics Wrong And Here’s A Better Way – Chris Mercer How To Figure Out Your Most Effective Marketing Channels – Scott Desgrosseilliers

Our guest today is Steven Sashen ( https://www.linkedin.com/in/sashen/ ) , one of the founders and CEO of Xero Shoes ( https://xeroshoes.com/ ). Xero Shoes produces lightweight minimalist footwear designed for walking, running, and athletics. Here are some of the questions I ask Steven: * How did you discover minimalism shoes and what led you to founding Zero Shoes? * Bring us up to speed. What's wrong with cushioned shoes? * What has been consumer reaction? Do you find there was already a market of consumers who knew about the detriments of cushioning in shoes or did it take lots of consumer education on your end? * What does going all green mean to you and true environmental impact mean to you? * Why did you decide to start with sandals? * One of the things I love about your shoes is that I think they are pretty affordable. I got my Prios I think for $80 and they come with a 5,000 sole * Was there a moment where you thought to yourself "hey this is actually working"? If so when did that moment occur? * What was your approach to your supply chain? * How did you think about expanding the number of products and SKUs? * Can you unpack that in terms of quality control and traditional * It seems like there are a number of shoe companies capitalizing on zero drop, but aren't truly minimalist. Can you unpack the differences? * Why did you decide to raise venture capital and what was your fundraising strategy? * Now you've raised private equity, what's the dynamic like having a board of directors and your decision making process? * When it comes to your own decision making process, what were a few moments that you really learned from that influenced you as a leader? * What's one thing you would change about consumer perception towards our feet? * What's the best piece of advice that you've received? * What's one piece of advice you have for entrepreneurs?
