The Reverend, David William Brown FRSE FBA (born 1 July 1948) is an Anglican priest and British scholar of philosophy, theology, religion, and the arts. He taught at the universities of Oxford, Durham, and St. Andrews before retiring in 2015. He is well-known for his "non-punitive theory of purgatory, his defence of specific versions of social Trinitarianism and kenotic Christology, his distinctive theory of divine revelation as mediated fallibly through both tradition and imagination, and his proposals regarding a pervasive sacramentality discerned in nature and human culture alike." Videos and Websites for more of David: David Brown (theologian - Wikipedia David Brown - Arts and Religious Belief (youtube.com) AT THE THRESHOLD: The Greater Part / David Brown (youtube.com) Research Areas An earlier interest in interactions between theology and philosophy has now broadened out into one between theology and the wider culture, especially the arts. In my earlier career at Oxford (1976-90), I focused on the relationship with philosophy and this is reflected in my two major books from that period: The Divine Trinity (1985) and Continental Philosophy and Modern Theology (1987). However, thereafter with my appointment first to Durham in 1990 and subsequently to St Andrews in 2007 my interests widened to consideration of theology's relationship with the arts and culture more generally. That interest is reflected in five books all published by Oxford University Press between 1999 and 2008. In the first two Tradition and Imagination (1999) and Discipleship and Imagination (2000) I explored the way in which the Christian understanding of biblical revelation has been affected by changes in the wider culture and in turn affected that wider culture. The history of art can provide some good examples, for instance in differing treatments across the centuries of the nativity or crucifixion of Christ. The later three then looked at religious experience and the way in which this might be mediated through the arts and culture. God and Enchantment of Place (2004) explored this primarily through landscape painting, geography and architecture, as well as, more briefly, in other neglected areas such as changing attitudes to garden design. God and Grace of Body (2007) examined attitudes to the body as well as music in all its forms (including pop music). Finally, God and Mystery in Words (2008) explored religious experience as mediated through drama and poetry and their expression in worship as liturgy and hymns. However. a book published initially in French in 2010 La tradition kénotique dans la théologie britannique represented a return to more doctrinal and philosophical issues. An English version becomes available from Baylor University Press in 2011 under the title, Divine Humanity: Kenosis and the Construction of a Christian Theology.

Please watch: "Home tour vlog | Beautiful house vastu | Delhi Vlog | Travel Vlogs | Dr Puneet Chawla" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r_vgkIOzpcE --~-- #vastu #drpuneetchawla # Shiva is the epitome of worship for Hindus. He is revered the most as he is very soft by heart which melts for every devotee who calls out to him with love and dedication. That is why Shiva is also called ‘Bholenath.' However, just the way Shiva gets impressed and happy very fast, he even gets angry in the flick of a second. So, it is very important to remember what makes him happy and what makes him annoyed so that we avoid any such act or offering which might offend him. Today's topic of discussion is what does Shiva dislike the most. 1. Ketaki flowers- Once upon a time, Lord Brahma and Lord Vishnu engaged themselves in a battle to prove their supremacy among the Divine Trinity. To put the argument to rest, Lord Shiva had to intervene and asked both Lord Brahma and Vishnu to find his origin and end. After trying to the best of his ability, Lord Vishnu failed and admitted his mistake while Lord Brahma lied by taking help from Ketaki flowers who supported him in his endeavour. When Shiva learnt about their lie, he got very annoyed and out of anger beheaded one of Brahma's head. He then turned to Ketaki flowers and cursed her of not being able to be used in any religious offerings to any of the Hindu Gods and Goddesses hence forth. 2. Tulsi leaves- Basil leaves are a taboo to be offered on the Shivaling, the reason being that Tulsi leaves is a representative of Goddesses Laxmi who in turn is lord Vishnu's wife. Hence it cannot e offered to any other God. Tulsi is also a variant of the Basil plant. Hence that too would be out of the question. 3. Haldi- The sacred Haldi or turmeric powder should never be offered on the Shivlinga because the former is considered to enhance the beauty of females while Shivlinga is symbolic of Lord Shiva. 4. Coconut water- Anything that is offered to Lord Shiva on the Shivalinga is forbidden from being consumed, hence coconut water is never offered to the devotee, the reason being that coconut water offered to the deities should be consumed mandatorily in the form of Prasadam. 5. Kumkum- Lord Shiva being the Supreme destroyer, offering kumkum or sindoor to him on his auspicious symbol, the Shivalinga, is not considered auspicious as sindoor is applied by married Hindu women to safeguard the long life of their husbands and is believed to be very sacred for them. Remember, Lord Shiva is considered to be the destroyer but this also stands true that it is very easy to appease him. Keeping the above things in mind can shower you with endless blessings from the Lord in no time at all. After several listener questions, we jumped back into our topic on the Holy Spirit and specifically talked about: What Biblical proof is there that the Holy Spirit is a person and not a force? And what Biblical proof is there that the Holy Spirit is Deity along with the Father and Son, as the third person in the Divine Trinity? Listen as Pastor/Dr. David Murphy discusses these questions and more.
Episode 131 – But What About … the Holy Spirit 3 Welcome to Anchored by Truth brought to you by Crystal Sea Books. In John 14:6, Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life.” The goal of Anchored by Truth is to encourage everyone to grow in the Christian faith by anchoring themselves to the secure truth found in the inspired, inerrant, and infallible word of God. Script: When we tell you these things, we do not use words that come from human wisdom. Instead, we speak words given to us by the Spirit, using the Spirit's words to explain spiritual truths. But people who aren't spiritual can't receive these truths from God's Spirit. It all sounds foolish to them and they can't understand it, for only those who are spiritual can understand what the Spirit means. 1 Corinthians, chapter 2, verses 13 and 14, New Living Translation ******** VK: Hello. I'm Victoria K. Welcome to Anchored by Truth brought to you by Crystal Sea Books. Today, we are continuing our study series we've called “But what about” because a lot of time you hear questions like “but what about angels and demons” or “what about heaven and hell?” Anyone who has been a Christian for very long knows that the plan of salvation is so simple that children can understand it. But they also know that the Christian faith also contains deep truths. Some of these truths are so deep that we can only understand them with the aid of the Holy Spirit. So, today we want to talk about this in our last episode of “But what about the Holy Spirit.” I'm in the studio today with RD Fierro, author and Founder of Crystal Sea Books. RD, in our last couple of episodes of Anchored by Truth we began our look at the 3rd Person of the Divine Trinity, the Holy Spirit. RD, can you give us a brief overview of some of the things we've discussed so far and what you want to talk about as we conclude our look at this Divine Companion to the Father and Son? RD: I'd be glad to, but before we get started I want to say a word of greeting and thanks to all the Anchored by Truth listeners. Thank you for joining us here today. In our first two episodes on the Holy Spirit we covered some very important points. For instance, we noted in saying that the Holy Spirit is the 3rd Person of the Trinity we are not in any way saying that the Holy Spirit is inferior to either the Father or the Son. Saying the Holy Spirit is the 3rd Person is just a form of description or nomenclature. It's not a hierarchical designation. Next, the Holy Spirit is a Person, not an impersonal force. The Holy Spirit makes personal choices and takes personal actions. He intercedes for us, teaches us, transforms us, and helps us personally and individually. The Holy Spirit does not correspond to the ideas present in many contemporary science fiction movies. Third, the Holy Spirit inhabits every believer the moment they accept Christ as their Savior. There are no 2nd class citizens when it comes to believers and the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit does not play favorites. The Holy Spirit is as fully present in believers the world sees as humble as He is in the most famous Christians who have ever lived. These are points we noted in our first episode of “but what about the Holy Spirit.” VK: And in our second episode we took a look at two of the most prominent appearances of the Holy Spirit in scripture: the Holy Spirit's appearance as a dove at the time Jesus began His public ministry – and the Holy Spirit's appearance as tongues of fire at Pentecost. The Holy Spirit settled on Jesus in the form of a dove at the time of His baptism. Doves are peace symbols. Noah used a dove to verify that the flood had ended and that the earth was being restored. So, appearing as a dove and settling on Jesus the Holy Spirit showed us that Jesus would make it possible for men to have peace with God. But the Holy Spirit's appearance as “tongues of fire” at Pentecost showed that this peace and restoration is not universal. Peace with God is available only through Jesus. Jesus told Nicodemus that eternal life is available for anyone who believes in the Son. But Jesus also said judgment has come to those who don't believe in the one and only Son of God because those people “loved the darkness more than the light.” RD: Right. Fire is a symbol of both illumination and judgment. The Holy Spirit provides illumination to anyone who accepts Christ. But the Holy Spirit pronounces judgement on those who love darkness rather than light. VK: So, today we want to build on that foundation we laid in our first two episodes on the Holy Spirit. Where do you want to go today? RD: Today I really want to focus on one idea. This idea is both simple and profound at the same time. But once people understand it, their understanding of the role scripture plays in God's revelation will soar. VK: An idea that is both simple and profound at the same time. This is either intriguing or scary – or maybe a bit of both. RD: It's a bit of both – just as the appearance of the Holy Spirit as tongues of fire that touched each believer was both comforting and terrifying. The Holy Spirit touched each believer in the room. Acts, chapter 2, verses 3 and 4 say, “Then, what looked like flames or tongues of fire appeared and settled on each of them. And everyone present was filled with the Holy Spirit and began speaking in other languages, as the Holy Spirit gave them this ability.” [emphasis added] Notice, there wasn't just sort of a giant glowing ball of light or fire that enveloped everyone. The Holy Spirit went to each believer individually. VK: The Holy Spirit went to each believer individually but He did go to them all. The scripture says “everyone present was filled with the Holy Spirit.” RD: Yes. So, this is a foundational principle of the Christian faith. The Holy Spirit is present in everyone who authentically accepts Christ as their Savior. And the Holy Spirit empowers each person with unique abilities. 1 Corinthians, chapter 12, verses 4 and 5 say, “There are different kinds of spiritual gifts, but the same Spirit is the source of them all. There are different kinds of service, but we serve the same Lord.” So, every believer receives one or more gifts from the Holy Spirit. But what we do with those gifts is up to us. VK: That's why the Apostle Paul told the Philippian believers in Philippians, chapter 2, verses 12 and 13 to “Work hard to show the results of your salvation, obeying God with deep reverence and fear. For God is working in you, giving you the desire and the power to do what pleases Him.” That's the New Living Translation. RD: Right. The Holy Spirit empowers every believer but it is up to every believer to decide whether they want to let those gifts languish or use them for the maximum benefit of God's kingdom. So, that is a great lead in to the main idea that I want to discuss today. VK: Which is? RD: The fact that the only reason we know about the Holy Spirit is because of the Bible. But the fact that we do know about the Holy Spirit helps demonstrate that the Bible is the inspired, inerrant, and infallible word of God. VK: That sounds like a circular argument. The Bible tells us about the Holy Spirit. But then the fact that we know about the Holy Spirit tells us that the Bible is the word of God. RD: And phrased that way it would be a circular argument. That's why we're going to take some time today to unpack this thought process and show that far from being circular it's actually quite amazing. First, let's start with remembering that on Anchored by Truth we offer 4 lines of evidence that the Bible is the inspired, inerrant, and infallible word of God: reliable history, remarkable unity, fulfilled prophecy, and redeemed destinies. VK: By reliable history we mean that the historical records the Bible contains have been validated time and time again. For instance, the book of Jonah mentioned the Assyrian city of Nineveh but secular history lost sight of Nineveh for over 2 millennia. Then in the middle of the 19th century it was rediscovered by a British archeologist, Sir Austen Henry Layard. This kind of instance has been repeated time and time again. By remarkable unity, we mean that the Bible displays a remarkable unity for a book that was composed by over 3 dozen human authors who wrote over a span of 1,500 years. We did an entire series called “Genesis to Revelation: 15 Critical Scriptures” to illustrate this. Links to the series are available on our website: crystalseabooks.com. RD: And fulfilled prophecy gives indisputable evidence of the Bible's supernatural origin. For example, writing in the latter half of the 8th century the prophet Isaiah gave the exact name of the king who would release the Hebrews from the Babylonian exile 200 years later. We don't know who will win the next election yet God told the Hebrews the name of their deliverer more than 2 centuries ahead of time. VK: And the 4th line of evidence is redeemed destinies. That is the Bible has resulted in an untold number of lives that have been positively changed by its transcendent message. All of this demonstrates that the Christian faith is a faith that is grounded in evidence, logic, and reason. Contrary to the refrain that you hear from some people that – “you have faith, but I have reason” – we believe that a proper use of logic, reason, and evidence actually demonstrates that the Christian faith is true. But how does this all fit in with the idea that the Bible's description of the Holy Spirit helps us know that the Bible is the word of God? RD: Our 4 lines of evidence help us see that the Bible is a remarkable book. But in certain respects the Bible is like other books. It was written down by human beings using the writing instruments available at the time and on the writing surfaces that were in common use. But from first to last the Bible is distinguished from all books because the human authors were all inspired by God. The Bible is God's special revelation to mankind. VK: The Bible makes this claim for itself. 2 Peter, chapter 1, verses 20 and 21 say, “Above all, you must realize that no prophecy in Scripture ever came from the prophet's own understanding, or from human initiative. No, those prophets were moved by the Holy Spirit, and they spoke from God.” RD: Right. So, let's remember that theologians differentiate between “general revelation” and “special revelation.” General revelation is exactly that. It is general in content and it is available to a general audience. We know from empirical observations of the universe that the universe cannot explain its own existence no matter how many claims are made by various scientists. The 2nd law of thermodynamics tells us that the universe is not eternally old and cannot exist eternally into the future. The universe will run out of energy and even secular scientists recognize this. If the universe were infinitely old it would have already run out of energy. So, we know that the universe has all the attributes of a being an effect not a cause. VK: And we know from the size of the universe that whatever or whoever caused it must be a being of enormous power and intelligence. There are galaxy sized structures in the universe all the way down to particles so small that they cannot be seen with an electron microscope. But this vast construction of energy-matter-space-time is so ordered that it can be studied and intelligent analyses made of how it will behave. This was actually the impetus for modern science and many of the founders of modern scientific disciplines such as Sir Isaac Newton who invented calculus and Carl Linnaeus the father of modern taxonomy. RD: Yes. So, we can determine that there was a God-sized Being that caused the universe. And we can know, as you said, that is a Being of immense power, knowledge, and presence. Everyone can know that. It is general knowledge. But we cannot know that that Being is a Trinitarian God comprised of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit just by studying nature. Said slightly differently, we can know that there is a God by looking at nature but we cannot know the nature of that God. In order to know much about the nature of God we needed for God to reveal Himself to us. VK: And that is exactly what God has done in the Bible. The Bible is God's special revelation. It is special in the content that it reveals and it is special in the sense that only people who have been empowered by the Holy Spirit can understand the revelations that it contains. We heard that in our opening scripture from 1 Corinthians, chapter 2. That scripture says, “people who aren't spiritual can't receive these truths from God's Spirit. It all sounds foolish to them and they can't understand it, for only those who are spiritual can understand what the Spirit means.” Again, today our scripture verses are coming from the New Living Translation. RD: Right. So, the Bible is God's special revelation – special in content and special in audience. And for the Bible to be an authentically special revelation we would expect for it to contain some information that is not available simply by studying the world around us. Think about this for a second. If human beings could obtain a comprehensive knowledge of God by simply studying nature there would be no real need for a special revelation. General revelation would be sufficient. VK: I see what you're saying. Logic tells us that every effect must have a full and sufficient cause. And while science can explain the operation of much of what we see in the universe there is a difference between explaining the operation of a thing and the origin of a thing. The physical universe shows us that the amount of usable energy is constantly being depleted. So, no matter how slow the rate of depletion and how much there is now this process must have begun at some point in the past. The visible universe had a beginning. But what was that beginning? What caused the origin of the universe? We know by studying the universe that it had a cause but that's all we could know. It's like seeing a painting. We know that for there to be a painting there must be a painter. But we can only learn so much about the painter if all we have is the painting itself. RD: Right. Fortunately, in this case the painter chose to give us information about himself. God gave us the Bible to give us information about Himself – and about how he created and what His plans are for His creation. We learn from the Bible about the triune nature of God, the dual nature of Christ, the plan of salvation, the fact there is another race of intelligent, personal beings besides humans, and that God is shepherding the history of the physical creation to an appointed end. All of these things, and more, are part of the special revelation that God has made to His people. We could not learn these things apart from special revelation. VK: But we can validate that that special revelation is true because God gave us evidence to validate its authenticity. God ensured that where the Bible spoke of history it would be an accurate record. And God gave us a substantial body of prophecy so we could see that the human writers had a supernatural source of inspiration. Some commentators count hundreds of prophecies that were fulfilled in the life of Jesus. Humanly speaking, it would be impossible for a group of conspirators to have ensured that all these prophecies would have been fulfilled in the life of one person even if they had wanted to. RD: Yes. We can know that Jesus lived because there are secular historians who have recorded some information about Him. But we only learn that Christ's death on the cross was to atone for sin and reconcile man to God from the Bible. It's also only from the Bible that we learn that God the Father sent the Holy Spirit to be our Advocate and Comforter after Jesus ascended into heaven. Yet, in that way that only God could have configured it is also the Holy Spirit that illuminates our minds to the truth that is contained in the Bible. VK: Yet again, this is information that is a part of special revelation. Special revelation tells not only about the existence of the Holy Spirit but also about His role, mission, and function. RD: Yes. So, now you can start to see that our awareness of the existence of the Holy Spirit is not the starting point from which we acquire our further confidence that the Bible is the inspired word of God. VK: Our starting point is the four lines of evidence that tell us that the Bible is a book that is unique among all the books of the world. There are many other books that claim, or have claimed to be God's word, but only the Bible provides evidence that demonstrates that it is. Our starting point for knowing that Bible is God's special revelation is examining it to see if it is consistent with what we know about the physical creation and human history. When we do that, we find out the Bible is consistent with the knowledge we obtain elsewhere. RD: Yes. Despite claims to the contrary the scientific evidence points to a universe that is thousands of years old not billions. And the scientific evidence shows that the extreme complexity of life, including the genetic code, tells us that life could not have arisen by chance. Science validates the records contained in Genesis. VK: And anyone who would like to study this subject more can go to our website and check out our “Truth in Genesis” series or visit the website for Creation Ministries International which is creation.com. RD: Right. So, we start with the fact that the Bible is a reliable record of the science it contains and a reliable record of the history it contains. As a generally reliable record we can then examine it to see if the prophecies it contains have proven true. And we find out that it does. The prophet Daniel, for example, recorded a list of four empires that would rule Palestine and the Middle East. When Daniel recorded his prophecy the Babylonians were in charge. Daniel predicted the Persians would displace the Babylonians and the Greeks would displace the Persians and that happened exactly as Daniel prophesied. And while Daniel didn't name Rome he did describe the Roman Empire so precisely that when Rome conquered the Greeks it was easy to see he had been given his information by a supernatural God who knows all of history before it happens. VK: So, we start with the fact that the Bible is a generally reliable record but we move on to the fact that the Bible demonstrates that it has a supernatural origin. We can then look to see what revelations the Bible contains that we cannot know simply by looking at the created order or history. This includes revelations about the nature of God and the existence of the Holy Spirit. And what you're saying is that if the Bible did not contain such supplemental revelations we might wonder why not. As you said, if general revelation were sufficient there would be no need for a special revelation. But if God did choose to make a special revelation we would expect to see special information in that revelation – information that we could not derive from any other source. RD: Which is exactly what we do see. And part of that information is that there are certain truths that we can only know because the Holy Spirit has communicated them to us. So, the observation that our awareness of the Holy Spirit helps confirm the inspiration of scripture is not circular because we don't start our line of reasoning with that awareness. We start our line of reasoning with our observations of the created order and then see what place the Bible occupies within that order. But what we come to is the wonderful truth in addition to the four lines of evidence that anyone may check, Christians – believers – have an additional form of evidence. This additional form is sometimes referred to as the internal testimony of the Spirit. VK: That's pretty neat. It's almost as if the Holy Spirit wants His children to have a way to resolve all doubts as to whether or not they are truly saved. Just about every Christian will admit that at some point during the Christian journey they are going to have doubts – about God, about their own salvation, possibly even about the Bible. But the Holy Spirit has already given us a way to resolve those doubts. RD: Yes. Christians can, and should, study the first 4 lines of evidence because 1 Peter 3:15 tells us that we must be prepared to give a reason for the hope that lies within us. That's our testimony to the world which includes believers and unbelievers. But the Holy Spirit isn't asking us to simply ground our trust in Him on what is available to everyone else, believing or unbelieving. The Holy Spirit brings an additional level of awareness by imparting truths to us that only He can impart. Our opening scripture says, “people who aren't spiritual can't receive these truths from God's Spirit.” That's the negative statement of that fact. The positive statement is that people who are spiritual – those who believe in Jesus and the Holy Spirit – CAN receive these truths. The Holy Spirit is equally present in all believers but the point is He is present. He hasn't left us to fend for ourselves in this world. He really is our ever-present Advocate, Counselor, and Comforter. We always say on Anchored by Truth that any book that claims to be the word of God must, at a minimum, be consistent with what we know by observing the world, universe, and human history and must also display evidence of supernatural origin. One of the ways the Bible displays evidence of supernatural origin is by giving us information about the supernatural realm which we would otherwise not possess. The existence and activity of the Holy Spirit is a part of the knowledge the Bible communicates which tells us that it really does come to us from an omniscient God who has given us a coherent body of faith. VK: Well, next time we'll turn our attention to some additional areas that are often the subject of “what about” questions. We're going to take a look at what the Bible has to say about heaven and hell. This sounds like a good time for a prayer. Since one of the things we're commanded to pray for in scripture is for our neighbors and communities today let's listen to a prayer for friends. ---- PRAYER FOR FRIENDS (JUNE). Episode 130 – But What About … the Holy Spirit 2 Welcome to Anchored by Truth brought to you by Crystal Sea Books. In John 14:6, Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life.” The goal of Anchored by Truth is to encourage everyone to grow in the Christian faith by anchoring themselves to the secure truth found in the inspired, inerrant, and infallible word of God. Script: Suddenly, there was a sound from heaven like the roaring of a mighty windstorm, and it filled the house where they were sitting. Then, what looked like flames or tongues of fire appeared and settled on each of them. And everyone present was filled with the Holy Spirit and began speaking in other languages, as the Holy Spirit gave them this ability. Acts, chapter 2, verses 2 through 4, New Living Translation ******** VK: Hello. I’m Victoria K. Welcome to Anchored by Truth brought to you by Crystal Sea Books. Today, we are continuing our study series we’ve called “But what about” because a lot of time you hear questions like “but what about angels and demons” or “what about heaven and hell?” Unfortunately, we live in an age that where a lot of people who identify as being Christian are unfamiliar with the specifics of the faith they claim. This means many people either do not understand or cannot explain the basic tenants that make Christianity unique. This is particularly true with elements of the Christian faith that pertain to the nature of God and the supernatural realm. Obviously, the remedy to this problem is to see what the Bible actually has to say about them. I’m in the studio today with RD Fierro, author and Founder of Crystal Sea Books. RD, last time we began our look at the 3rd Person of the Divine Trinity, the Holy Spirit. RD, can you give us a brief overview of some of the things we discussed? RD: I’d be glad to, but before we get started I want to say a word of greeting and thanks to all the Anchored by Truth listeners. Thank you for joining us here today. As you mentioned a lot of people today who would identify themselves as being Christian find themselves at a loss if they are asked to explain some of the basic doctrines of the Christian faith – such as the triune nature of God or the dual nature of Christ. Now, admittedly, these are doctrines that contain elements of mystery. And no human being will ever understand them exhaustively. But the fact that we cannot comprehensively comprehend these doctrines is not an excuse for not applying ourselves to learning what we can. Most people cannot explain electricity but they know enough not to put their hands around a live bare wire or throw an electrical appliance into the bath tub. VK: Well, we certainly hope that they know that. RD: So, on our last episode of Anchored by Truth we covered some really important points about the Holy Spirit. First, the Holy Spirit is the 3rd Person of the Trinity. But in saying that the Holy Spirit is the 3rd Person we are not in any way saying that the Holy Spirit is inferior to either the Father or the Son. Saying the Holy Spirit is the 3rd Person is just a form of description or nomenclature. It’s not a hierarchical designation. Next, the Holy Spirit is a Person, not an impersonal force of the variety that is postulated in some science fiction movies. The Holy Spirit makes personal choices and takes personal actions. He intercedes for us, teaches us, transforms us, and helps us personally and individually. Third, the Holy Spirit inhabits every believer the moment they accept Christ as their Savior. There are no 2nd class citizens when it comes to believers and the Holy Spirit. And it’s important to note that the Holy Spirit does not play favorites. The Holy Spirit is as fully present in believers the world might see as humble as He is in the most famous Christians who have ever lived. VK: And today we want to build on that foundation. I believe you said that you want to think about a couple of the most prominent appearances of the Holy Spirit in scripture. We heard about one of those appearances in our opening scripture for today. This was the appearance of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost. So, let’s take just a brief look at the background about Pentecost itself. Pentecost comes from a Greek word meaning fiftieth. In the Jewish calendar Pentecost was the fiftieth day after Passover – well, actually the 2nd day of the Feast of Passover because Passover lasted for a week. Pentecost could be regarded as a supplement to the Passover. The center piece of the celebration was the presentation of the two loaves made from the first-fruits of the wheat harvest. Other sacrifices were also offered but until the Pentecostal loaves were offered, rest of the harvest couldn’t be eaten. Pentecost signified the dedication of the harvest to God as its giver. RD: Exactly. Pentecost signified that the harvest time had come. In a sense Pentecost was both a beginning and an end. It was the end of the planting and growing season and the beginning of bringing in the fruits of those labors. So, I want to keep those principles in mind as we move on to another prominent appearance of the Holy Spirit in scripture. This is appearance of the Holy Spirit at the time Jesus began His public ministry that is recorded in Matthew, chapter 3. VK: Ok. Let’s listen to the verses you’re referring to. This is the Gospel of Matthew, chapter 3, verses 16 and 17. In the New Living Translation those verses say, “After his baptism, as Jesus came up out of the water, the heavens were opened and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and settling on him. And a voice from heaven said, “This is my dearly loved Son, who brings me great joy.” RD: A few things to notice immediately. First, like the verses we heard from the Gospel of John, chapter 14, verses 16 and 17, this passage of scripture clearly demonstrates the triune nature of God. The Son, in his human nature, is on earth being baptized. The Spirit descends on the Son in the form of a dove. And, immediately, we hear the Father affirming His approval of His Son. So, as with the verses in John – where Jesus told his disciples He was going to ask the Father to send another advocate (comforter) – we hear a clear distinction being made between the 3 Persons of the Trinity. VK: In the New Living Translation the verses from John say, “And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, who will never leave you. He is the Holy Spirit, who leads into all truth.” So, in both these passages from scripture we see that the 3 Persons of the Trinity clearly interact with each other on the basis of relationship and identity. They all share a single nature, but they all have separate identities and they perform roles based on their relationship with one another. RD: Yes. The Trinitarian nature of God is a fundamental doctrine of the Christian faith. We should all do our best to grapple with it. It’s not easy and there will always be mystery associated with it. But it is a basic principle of the Christian faith and as we will see it is foundational to the coherence of the faith. But let’s move on to another important point we see from the Matthew passage. The Holy Spirit manifests Himself in a wide variety of guises in His various appearances in scripture. VK: For instance, in Revelation, chapter 1, verse 4 the Holy Spirit is said to appear as “seven spirits” that are before the throne of God. And in Zechariah, chapter 3, verse 9 the Holy Spirit is described as a “stone” on which there are 7 eyes. RD: Right. The Holy Spirit obviously takes on whatever form He deems suitable for the occasion of His appearing. So, why did the Holy Spirit take on the form of a dove on this occasion – at Jesus’ baptism which was effectively the start of His public ministry? VK: I think that’s a very good question – so I expect you probably have some thoughts about the answer. RD: Actually, I do. Let’s remember back to Biblical flood account that we hear about in Genesis, chapters 6 through 9. What did Noah did as the flood waters were receding from the earth. VK: Oh, I see what you’re getting at. Noah released two birds from the window of the ark so they could check and see what was happening on the outside of the ark. The first bird Noah released was a raven. The Bible says the raven “kept flying back and forth until the water had dried up from the earth.” Then Noah sent out a dove. The dove actually went out three times. Each time was a week apart. The first time it came back because scripture says “the dove could find nowhere to perch.” The second time the dove came back it had a “freshly plucked olive leaf” in its beak. The third time it didn’t return. Evidently, by then the dove had found plenty of food and places it could land and rest. RD: Right. The raven didn’t need to come back because ravens are carrion eaters. It could land and feed on dead animals that were either floating or starting to be exposed on the few parts of the land that were starting to appear. But doves feed on seeds, grains, fruits, and insects. On its first couple of flights it wasn’t able to find what it needed to sustain itself. But the olive leaf told Noah that the plant life was starting to come back. But the point is that the dove became a symbol of peace because the dove’s flights marked the end of the end of the flood and the resumption of a period of growth and harvesting. So, the Holy Spirit descending in the form of a dove is a graphic reminder that Jesus came to bring peace between mankind and God. VK: I see what you’re saying. This calls to mind the Gospel of Luke, chapter 2, verses 13 and 14 which described the scene of the shepherds in the field seeing the vision of angels. The New Living Translation puts it this way: “Suddenly, the angel was joined by a vast host of others—the armies of heaven—praising God and saying, ‘Glory to God in highest heaven, and peace on earth to those with whom God is pleased.’” RD: Exactly right. Notice the angel said “peace on earth to those with whom God is pleased.” Then, in the passage from Matthew the Father distinctly says that He is pleased with His Son. Jesus pleased the Father not only at the start of His public ministry but throughout His entire life. And because Jesus pleased the Father Jesus was able to bring peace to anyone who would place their trust in Jesus for their salvation. So, the Holy Spirit taking on the form of a dove at the start of Jesus’ public ministry was a graphic way of telling the world that Jesus had arrived to bring that peace between the Father and anyone and everyone who would allow Jesus to become their comforter and advocate. VK: Wow. That’s amazing. The Holy Spirit’s appearance as a dove at the start of Jesus’ public ministry was a graphic punctuation point that a very long period of estrangement between mankind and God was coming to an end. From the time God created the heavens and earth to Jesus’ birth was a period of about 4,500 years. During that 4,500 years God was shaping both histories and cultures to prepare the world for the arrival of the Messiah. So, when the Messiah arrived after all that time it really did mark a major line of demarcation in the history of the world. RD: Just as the flood of Noah had. But now let’s fast forward to the Holy Spirit’s appearance at Pentecost. This is after Jesus’ death, resurrection, and ascension. Jesus had completed his sacrificial work and the Father has demonstrated His satisfaction with work by Jesus’ resurrection. And at the time of Pentecost Jesus has returned to the Father. This also inaugurates a new period in the grand saga of redemption. This is the time when the veil had separated the Holy of Holies in the temple from the rest of the temple had been torn and removed. And the Apostles Peter and Paul will shortly demonstrate that now Gentiles as well as Jews are welcome to participate in salvation. Prior to Jesus’ ministry and death the plan of salvation had been focused on Israel and the Mideast – but now it will be taken to the whole world. VK: So, let’s amplify that point a little. When the Holy Spirit descended at the time Jesus was baptized the Holy Spirit only rested on Jesus. But at Pentecost the Bible says, “Then, what looked like flames or tongues of fire appeared and settled on each of them.” At Pentecost there was a large group of believers who had gathered together in one place. When the Holy Spirit came, He didn’t just settle on one or two of the believers – not even the leaders. The Holy Spirit settled on “each of them.” What a marvelous illustration that the plan of salvation had entered an entirely new era. Now, the Holy Spirit was demonstrating that He would be available to anyone who chose to believe in Jesus as the Messiah. RD: And the beginning of this new era is demonstrated even further because the Bible tells us that there were believers from all over the known world that were there who immediately heard the message that the disciples began preaching. The Bible mentions “Parthians, Medes and Elamites; residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and parts of Libya near Cyrene; visitors from Rome (both Jews and converts to Judaism); Cretans and Arabs.” We don’t have time to go into the specific geography that is covered in that series, but it essentially covers all of the Roman Empire at that time. VK: And the fact that God was beginning a phase of redemption when the gospel would be taken throughout the world is emphasized because all the visitors were hearing the messages being proclaimed in their own language. Acts, chapter 2, verse 8 says the people hearing the message were amazed and said, “…how is it that each of us hears … them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues!” RD: Right. So, at Pentecost the Holy Spirit descended on each of the believers that were present. That would have been amazing enough. But the Holy Spirit didn’t just settle for inspiring those individual believers. The Holy Spirit immediately inspired the believers to carry the message that salvation was available to everyone to people from around the world. The territory covered in that list includes what today we would call Europe, Asia, and Africa. Furthermore, it’s important to note that Holy Spirit’s appearance at Pentecost wasn’t as a dove but as flames or tongues of fire. VK: Well, just as the dove is a symbol of peace fire is often a symbol of the glory of God and of judgment. For instance, after the Israelites have left Egypt, in Exodus, chapter 24, verses 17 and 18 the Bible says, “To the Israelites at the foot of the mountain, the glory of the LORD appeared at the summit like a consuming fire. Then Moses disappeared into the cloud as he climbed higher up the mountain. He remained on the mountain forty days and forty nights.” RD: Right. This was the point in the exodus when God gave Moses the law. And while Moses was on the mountain the Israelites got restless and made the golden calf. Then when Moses came down from the mountain God pronounced judgement on the idolatry and it resulted in the death of 3,000 people. So, at Jesus’ baptism the Holy Spirit arrived to demonstrate that Jesus was about to make peace possible between God and man. At Pentecost the Holy Spirit arrived to say that everything necessary for that peace had been accomplished. That’s the good news. The bad news is that there would be judgment for those who did not accept the offer. VK: And even Jesus gave that message to Nicodemus. In John, chapter 3, verses 16 through 19 Jesus said, “…God … gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life. God sent his Son into the world not to judge the world, but to save the world through him. There is no judgment against anyone who believes in him. But anyone who does not believe in him has already been judged for not believing in God’s one and only Son. And the judgment is based on this fact: God’s light came into the world, but people loved the darkness more than the light, for their actions were evil.” RD: Yes. During His ministry Jesus had promised that the Holy Spirit would come and He told the disciples to remain in Jerusalem until it happened. The Holy Spirit arrived at Pentecost just as Jesus had promised and immediately began His work of applying the gospel of salvation to the lives of individual believers. That made the Spirit’s appearance as tongues of fire appropriate – because, just as Jesus said, anyone who does not believe has been “judged for not believing in God’s one and only son.” But fire is not just a symbol of judgement. It is also a symbol of illumination, passion, and purification. VK: An example of the Holy Spirit’s role in purification and sanctification is Galatians, chapter 5, verses 22 and 23. Those verses say, “But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.” Said another way as we progress through the Christian life we should see more and more of these attributes in our lives. RD: Yes. Fire as an agent of purification is very common throughout scripture as is the recognition that such purification is necessary for God’s children. For instance, Psalm 66:10 says, “You have tested us, O God; you have purified us like silver.” And fire is an obviously an appropriate symbol of illumination because fire was the only way people in the ancient world had to see at night or in the dark. The Holy Spirit’s role in illuminating our minds is illustrated by 1 Corinthians, chapter 2, verses 13 and 14 which say, “When we tell you these things, we do not use words that come from human wisdom. Instead, we speak words given to us by the Spirit, using the Spirit’s words to explain spiritual truths. But people who aren’t spiritual can’t receive these truths from God’s Spirit. It all sounds foolish to them and they can’t understand it, for only those who are spiritual can understand what the Spirit means.” VK: The fact that the Holy Spirit is present in all believers is reinforced by Galatians, chapter 4, verse 6. This verse says, “And because we are his children, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, prompting us to call out, ‘Abba, Father.’” As is frequently noted the term “Abba Father” is essentially the way a child calls out to “Daddy.” It’s a very personal expression. And we can be sure that every believer has the Spirit because that verse says God sent the Spirit into our hearts. We can be very sure that if God sent the Spirit, the Spirit arrived. God is not going to fail when he does something. RD: And, of course, fire is a common symbol of passion even in our own day and language. People will talk about a passionate person as having “fire in the belly” or being “on fire for the Lord.” But it is important to note that the passion that Holy Spirit brings to the life of a believer is a passion for God and for the things of God. VK: That calls to mind the famous incident from the Gospels when Jesus overturned the tables of the money changers in the temple. The Gospel of John says in chapter 2, verse 17 that when the disciples saw Jesus doing that they “remembered this prophecy from the Scriptures: ‘Passion for God’s house will consume me.’” RD: Right. So, we can see from the Holy Spirit’s appearance as dove settling on Jesus at the time of Jesus’ baptism that God was signaling that Jesus’ arrival was introducing the possibility of peace between God and men. Just as Noah used a dove to verify that the flood had indeed ended and that the earth was being restored, the Holy Spirit as the dove helps us see that through Jesus’ life and ministry we can find peace and restoration. But the Holy Spirit’s appearance as “tongues of fire” at Pentecost, signal that this peace and restoration is not universal. Peace and restoration are universally available but as Jesus told Nicodemus they are only available for those who believe in the Son. Jesus said judgment has come to those who don’t believe in the one and only Son of God because those people “loved the darkness more than the light.” VK: Well, we’ve mentioned a couple of times that without a good understanding of the Holy Spirit it is difficult, if not impossible, to have a coherent Christian faith – or a coherent world view for that matter. That’s a subject we want to explore in greater depth on our next episode of Anchored by Truth. But in the little time we have remaining can you give us a glimpse of what you’re thinking about? RD: Sure. I know that sometimes the Holy Spirit can be a bit of a mysterious figure to many people. But if God was not an eternal Trinity it would be much harder to understand certain attributes of God such as love and harmony. Love is possible among the three persons of the Trinity because they are separate and distinct from one another when it comes to relationship. It’s hard to see how a God who is not triune could truly express love, especially the kind of love that is willing to sacrifice itself for another. This is the kind of love Jesus showed to men but it is also the kind of love the Persons of the Trinity have for one another. It is possible for them to have a loving relationship because they are separate and distinct from one another. So, the Father can truly love the Son and the Son can truly love the Father so much that He was willing to adopt a human nature to demonstrate the Father’s love for us. The Spirit loves the Father and the Son and so is willing to come to rebellious and sinful people to change their hearts so those people can also begin to participate in this eternal love. If the Spirit were not a person He could not love in such a way that makes His mission understandable. Impersonal forces do not love. But an perfect and holy Spirit who is concerned for the being God created in His image can express that love. This can be difficult to understand on our first hearing about it. We need to meditate about it and pray for the Spirit’s wisdom to see its applicability. But this is a necessary discipline but if we don’t undertake it we will miss out the deepest possible relationship with God. If we try to limit scripture to merely human ideas or concepts, it’s much harder for us to learn and it would be impossible for us to have a coherent faith. VK: Well, as we mentioned, next time we’ll turn our attention to some additional elements about the Holy Spirit. We especially want to study how understanding the role of 3rd Person of the Trinity is consistent with, and essential to, the remarkable unity of scripture. This sounds like a good time for a prayer. Since there is a desperate need in every nation for the wisdom of God to light a path to truth and freedom, today let’s pray a prayer for all Christian missionaries – whether they’re sent to foreign lands or their next door neighbor. ---- PRAYER FOR CHRISTIAN MISSIONARIES. Welcome to our new Radical Life Support series entitled the ABCs of the Attributes of Jesus. This series will be focusing on the attributes, character, names, and works of Jesus Christ. Jesus is the second member of the Divine Trinity and He is described as “the exact representation of God’s being” (Heb 1:3). Jesus is not merely an image or reflection of God. There is God the Father, the Son of God and the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is God and the Son Himself is God. It is very important to start with this view of Jesus. Jesus was conceived by the Holy Spirit, was born to a virgin, became flesh and dwelt among us. Jesus came for a very specific reason as clearly stated in John 3:16 which says that, “For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him, shall not perish but have eternal life.” Jesus came and died on a cross for the sins of all mankind. He was buried and then 3 days later, He rose again defeating death. He ascended into heaven and now sits at the right hand of God the Father. One day He will return to earth and those who put their trust in Him will live with Him forever in heaven. This is the basic tenant of the Christian faith. It begins and ends with Jesus as the central figure in and for all creation. In our study on the ABCs of the attributes of God, our main theme came from a quote by A.W. Tozer, “What you think about God is the most important thing about you.” Now, with Jesus, what you think about Him has eternal consequences. Our quote for this series will be from Jesus Himself spoken to His disciples in Matt 16, Mark 8, and Luke 9: Jesus and His disciples went on to the villages around Caesarea Philippi. Once when Jesus was praying in private and His disciples were with Him, He asked His disciples, “Who do people say that I am?" They replied, “Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets of long ago has come back to life.” “But what about you?” He asked. “Who do you say I am?” Peter answered, “You are the Christ, the Son of the Living God."The people of the day compared Jesus to good men, believing He was a good man. People even do that today. He was a good teacher they say; but that was not the right or complete description of Jesus. Peter accurately said He was the Christ, the long awaited anointed one. Stating Him as being divine, more than a mere man. When we talk about who Jesus was and is today, we must start at this point. It is a serious matter to get His identification correct. His true identity is of utmost and absolute importance for the world and each of us personally. It is a matter of eternal life or eternal death for those who would or would not believe in Him.We don’t need to guess who Jesus is or make Him up. In our study, we are going to see in scripture what God says about Jesus and what Jesus says about Himself. It is plainly stated to either be believed or not. The bible is the source of true knowledge regarding who Jesus is. People’s opinion or our own understanding of who Jesus is or who we want Him to be will always be inaccurate. Do not rely on it and make sure whatever you believe about Jesus matches with scripture. When you seek Him, the bible says you will find Him. That is a promise for anyone who is seeking with their whole heart. So, in these next weeks, let’s seek Him together. Let’s find out if we really know Him for who He is. We can’t afford to get it wrong. Ask yourself our theme question as if Jesus was asking you directly, “But what about you?” “Who do you say I am?”

Today we celebrate the Feast of the Queenship of Mary. Because Mary is the Mother of Jesus Christ, the King of Kings, then she is the Queen of the Universe. In the early 700's in Jerusalem, St. John Damascene sums up the entire Christian tradition when he writes: "When she became Mother of the Creator, she truly became Queen of every creature." Christ is our King not only because He is the Son of God but also because He is the Savior of the World. Instituting this Celebration of the Queenship of Mary Pope Pius XII wrote: if Mary, in taking an active part in the work of salvation, was, by God's design, associated with Jesus Christ, the source of salvation itself, in a manner comparable to that in which Eve was associated with Adam, the source of death, so that it may be stated that the work of our salvation was accomplished by a kind of "recapitulation," in which a virgin was instrumental in the salvation of the human race, just as a virgin had been closely associated with its death; if, moreover, it can likewise be stated that this glorious Lady had been chosen Mother of Christ "in order that she might become a partner in the redemption of the human race"; and if, in truth, "it was she who, free of the stain of actual and original sin, and ever most closely bound to her Son, on Calvary offered that Son to the Eternal Father together with the complete sacrifice of her maternal rights and maternal love, like a new Eve, for all the sons of Adam, stained as they were by his lamentable fall," then it may be legitimately concluded that as Christ, the new Adam, must be called a King not merely because He is Son of God, but also because He is our Redeemer, so, analogously, the Most Blessed Virgin is queen not only because she is Mother of God, but also because, as the new Eve, she was associated with the new Adam. Let all Christians, therefore, glory in being subjects of the Virgin Mother of God, who, while wielding royal power, is on fire with a mother's love. On this Feast of the Queenship of Mary I want to share with you a few key messages from the apparitions of Jesus and Mary to to Sr. Mary Ephrem Neuzil, a Precious Blood sister in Ohio from 1954 and 1984 known as Our Lady of America. In 2007, Cardinal Burke wrote a letter to every bishop of the U.S. verifying the approved status of this apparition and encouraging all bishops to do as Jesus and Mary had requested in their messages…May 22 1954 Jesus said to Sr. Neuzil, if the world is dying, it is because it will not let Me give it life. I am the resurrection and the life, and unless souls seek their life in Me, they will find only death and destruction. They fear man-made destroyers of life, yet destruction is in themselves. Man destroys himself through the evil that is in himself. Implements of war kill only that which is without. Man kills that which is within – his soul. May 29, 1954, O Man, what have I done to you that you should refuse My aid?... do you know what I find most lacking in the world today? It is FAITH. There are so few souls that believe in Me and My love. They profess their belief and their love, but they do not live this belief. Their hearts are cold, for without faith there can be no love. Pray and sacrifice yourself, my child, that faith may once again find entrance into the hearts of men. July 11, 1954 My daughter I am not loved in the homes of men. And because I am not loved, the Divine Trinity refuses to dwell therein. Children are not taught to love Me, because those who are in charge of them have no time or patience to do so. My Heart grieves over My children in the world. Their hearts are being drawn farther and farther away from Me. They will not even listen to My Mother, because they have never been taught to listen. I am a Beggar for love, but how few give to Me the means by which to satisfy My divine hunger. I hunger for the love of My own, and I receive only the crumbs no other would accept. July 12, 13, 14 1954.
When professing Christians willfully and consistently reject the Biblical and divine Trinity, they not only cease to be effective Christians but end up going further into heresy and apostasy, and eventually become useless to God and the Church in general!
Tonight we continued our journey with St. Isaac through homily 51. Isaac continues his reflection upon living the life of mercy and challenging our view of justice as those who been redeemed by the blood of Christ. In the eyes of God our sin is like a handful of sand cast into an ocean of divine Mercy. Likewise we must view one another with the same generosity of spirit, always viewing sin and evil actions as a sickness driven and shaped by the evil one. We must never lose sight of the dignity of the human person made in the image and likeness of God even in the face of incontrovertible moral failure. We must realize that our sin distorts our view of the truth and inflames our anger to the point of retribution. Our anger no longer simply informs us of the presence of injustice it makes us want to take the judgment of God into our own hands - to embrace once again the original sin of seeking to make ourselves gods. Isaac sets out the virtues of humility and chastity as shaping the heart and making us a tabernacle for the Divine Trinity. Fear and joy both draw us toward God. Joy excels however and creates exuberance in the soul and fashions an open and irrepressible heart. Isaac does not fail to warn us of the pitfalls along the way. We must be circumspect and watchful even in those relationships of greatest love. We must desire to protect and foster the virtue of the other as much as our own. Our reflection shows us that Isaac will not allow us to domesticate the gospel and shape it with our almost infinite capacity for rationalization. Divine revelation turns our perception of reality and all that is human on its head. The revolutionary nature of the Gospel strikes the heart with full force.
Part I of a must listen series exploring and defining who the Holy Spirit is and what His role a part of the Divine Trinity. If you have ever had questions about the Holy Spirit, then you need to listen to this sermon.
Between the three Persons of the Divine Trinity, which we call Father, Son, and Spirit, there exists love so real that it took on the form of another Person. The Father so filled with love that the Son was generated by pure love. The Son looking back on the Father and so filled with love for the Father and the Father for the Son that their love became real and became the third Person of the Blessed Trinity.
The great majority of Christians worship Jesus as the incarnation of God the Son, the second of three persons of a Divine Trinity. #News18Podcast
