You may have heard about the importance of your 'why'--that thing that motivates you and provides a sense of purpose in life and work. But what if that concept was broken down even further, into three parts that took you deeper into that 'why'? Nicole Lewis-Keeber (therapist, coach & author) has done just that, and she talks with Jodi in this episode of the podcast about The Three Whys. Jodi also shares an early experience that took her away from her Why, and a little about the process of getting back to it.         Stories, by definition, evoke emotions. Strong stories encourage your audience to see themselves in your story.  But what does your audience experience when you share a story about your own struggles?  Maybe you want them to get the message, “I've been there.” Maybe you offer a service to clients who seek help for difficult, sensitive problems. Maybe you've struggled in your own business and you want to demonstrate, “I'm human.”   How will your story land with your audience? Will you inspire them or inadvertently create an uncomfortable response? To answer this question, we can turn to Nicole Lewis-Keeber, The Business Therapist.  Nicole is passionate about the impact of small “t” trauma on businesses and she's trained and certified with Brené Brown's Dare To Lead™ methodology. She's one of the few professionals who combine therapeutic processes with business coaching, helping entrepreneurs gain emotional and well as financial sustainability. In this podcast episode, Nicole explains how a story can inadvertently trigger strong negative emotions. She provides a framework and guidelines for sharing a difficult story when it's appropriate to your offer and your audience.  Tune in to discover… …key points to consider as you incorporate storytelling in your business   …essential questions to ask when sharing a difficult story seems appropriate - even essential - to your marketing …what can trigger an audience's negative emotions as they listen to your story …why the wrong story can come across as manipulative (and change your relationship with your audience forever) …when and how you might consider “trigger warnings” before sharing a hard story …why you can replace a struggle story with a joyful story It's a subject we rarely discuss but it's important in today's dynamic marketing environment. Nicole is one of the few professionals who combine an understanding of psychological trauma with the realities of entrepreneurship.  Listen to Episode 112 here and you'll come away with the understanding to choose the right story for your business and manage your shares when the topic becomes sensitive.   RESOURCES: Business Therapist Nicole Lewis-Keeber Consultations for storytelling - the Strategic Intensive FREE guide to understanding your prospective client's backstory - Click here

082 How To Respond When Someone Projects Their Story Into Your Narrative

When you tell stories, you influence your audience. In business and in life, you're encouraged to share stories that reflect your audience's reality.  But all too often, you're faced with someone who projects their reality onto your story. In this episode, I'm joined by Nicole Lewis-Keeber, a life coach who's also a licensed therapist, with special expertise in trauma. She will explain how foisting a story on your listener can create a great deal of harm. It can even be considered a micro-trauma. I was inspired to create this podcast when I read comments in a Facebook group, Community of Single People: people who are happily single with no interest in changing their status. They reported therapists and doctors who seriously advised them, "If you just start dating and get married, your problems will go away." Nicole dismisses this story as nonsense. Bringing a new person into your life, she says, can add even more problems!  Even worse, these authority figures are projecting their story into someone else's narrative.  If you're single without children, they assume your story will be, "I'm lonely and depressed." That's their belief about single people - a belief, Nicole says, will be created and reinforced by the surrounding society. It's not just about being single. If you're older than sixty, your story must be, "I'm weak and frail and helpless...and maybe broke, too." If you're a new business owner, your story must be, "I don't know how to do anything and I'll probably fail." These stories are especially harmful when we hear them from authority figures (such as doctors and therapists), who are supposed to be the experts. They're also harmful when we hear them from friends and coworkers. We don't want to make them feel bad or disrupt a relationship. But when a coworker expresses dismay at a single coworker's life, she's imposing her story: "Being alone on a holiday will make you feel depressed." The single person's real story is, "I clove being alone on holidays and wouldn't want it any other way." At 17:00 Nicole talks about the ways these forced stories can create trauma. Some even create negative trauma adaptations, with the need to cope through substance abuse and self-destructive actions.    At 21:54 - Nicole suggests appropriate ways to respond when someone forces their story into your narrative. She encourages us to be direct and not accept the forced story.  Nicole can be found at https://nicole.lewis-keeber.com/

I am pretty sure I am not the only one who has noticed the dramatic increase in the number of coaches who refer to themselves as ‘trauma-focused”, ‘trauma-aware” or “trauma-conscious.” There is no question that there is a tremendous need. Half of all women have experienced trauma at some time in their lives and there is a significant percentage of traumatized people who become entrepreneurs. Because I work with female entrepreneurs, I wanted to address this issue on the podcast, and talk with someone who is a legitimate expert on the intersection of trauma and entrepreneurship, so I invited Nicole Lewis-Keeber back as my first return guest. If you have been a regular listener, you know that I am obsessed with helping female solopreneurs gain confidence and courage so they can pursue and achieve their goals and dreams. One of the most common scenarios I encounter with my business strategy and coaching clients the fear of hearing the word “no. I have been interviewed on the topic of entrepreneurship and rejection sensitivity on several other podcasts, so I know this is a pretty widespread struggle. There are a number of ways we unconsciously resist hearing no that actually limit our income, profit, and success in business. Behaviors such as never raising our prices, asking a team member to learn something new, and avoiding creating new offers are a few. Many of us go so far out of our way to avoid being rejected that we basically reject the chance of being found, hired, and paid. Or, we just don't ask for the sale, avoid using a Call to Action in our marketing, and “forget” to follow up with prospects. With everything I am learning about confidence, failure, and resiliency, I have come to the conclusion that getting better at dealing with “no” is a skill that all of us need to get better at. Think of it this way: we either need to learn how to deal more effectively with “no” or get used to settling for less than we truly want. The main issue is what we make it mean when we hear no, especially for those who are shy, introverted, highly creative, socially anxious, and who experience rejection sensitivity, but the good news is that getting better at hearing no is a skill that anyone can learn. I share several strategies that have been helpful to my clients and also to myself, including one I adapted from my experiences as a psychotherapist, including:Upping the ante on your “no” Role-playing with your biz bestieQuestioning the “no” Asking for things you don't really want/need Also mentioned in this episode: “Go for No” by Richard Fenton and Andrea Waltz https://amzn.to/3vjEtaZDid you recognize yourself in any of the ways I talked about in this episode? So many of my clients knew they were struggling and suspected they were holding themselves back in their business when they hired me, and one of the first things we did was to assess their mindset and habits. If you don't know what isn't working, you won't know what to change, right? I created a quiz with 6 different behaviors I often see in female solopreneurs that limit their income, profit, and success. Once you take the quiz, you will receive specific feedback, guidance, and practical advice about your particular challenge and more importantly, steps you can take to fix it. Click on this link to take the quiz: What's Holding You Back? https://bit.ly/obstaclesquizWith 20+ years of experience as a psychotherapist and 7+ years as a coach, I rarely meet a solopreneur who wouldn't benefit from some expert guidance. The idea of seeking and getting help has become more acceptable in society, in general. More people today are open to talking about their experiences. And the stigma for getting professional help has greatly been diminished, if not entirely eliminated. There has been an explosion in the field of coaching over the last few years. And the result of all these newly-minted coaches is that getting coached, in all aspects of life is now relatively accessible for more people. So, the upshot is professional help is more accessible, and more people are getting help. If there's an area in your life that you are having difficulty with, chances are, you'll be able to find someone who can help you address or overcome the issues. The challenge with more options is that we now must decide what kind of help we need. Who do we see for what kind of problem? How do we select, and what can we expect from the experience? All that is the subject of today's episode and to help me understand the landscape, I've invited Nicole Lewis-Keeber who is just the perfect person to chat with about these things!Nicole is in a unique position to shed some light here because she is a licensed clinical social worker - who worked for many years as a therapist. Then, she went on to get different kinds of coach training and became a mindset coach. So today, she is both! Although she's directed her professional work toward the business landscape and her clients call her the “business therapist”.IN THIS EPISODE: How therapy differs from coaching What kind of help you can expect from a therapist vs a life coach The intersection of life coaching and business coaching, and where the lines get blurred The limits within these fields Nicole's tips for selecting the right professional help For all the links and show notes, head on over to http://secondbreaks.com

Are you in a healthy relationship with your business? With your creative practice? Or is it unrequited love? On this episode of The Autonomous Creative, I talk to psychologist, author and business therapist, Nicole Lewis-Keeber. As a business therapist, Nicole uses her eighteen years of experience as a clinical social worker to help small businesses owners and entrepreneurs break the cycles of abuse they've established in their working lives. It's not only about running a business — or doing the creative work! — you love, but setting it up to love you back. We also discuss different types of trauma, how to identify them, and the importance of establishing boundaries in any healthy relationship. Plus, what causes money trauma and how can you get out from under it? Finally, Nicole shares her refreshing perspective on the inner critic, which I previously wrote about in a blog post called, “How to Silence Your Inner Critic: Embrace it.” For Nicole, the best way to handle the inner critic isn't to “overcome,” “conquer,” or “master” it, but to approach it with compassion and patience. Maybe even let it sit in the backseat? It might have something important to tell you. Learn more about embracing your inner critic here. More from the episode... How did Nicole recognize - and end - the ‘abusive relationship dynamic' she had accidentally created with her business? Why are boundaries around time and money so important for our mental health? Nicole identifies what ‘big-T' and ‘small-t' trauma look like, and how they can lead to behavior patterns that negatively impact our work. The number one reason ‘changing your mindset' doesn't work when dealing with a trauma response: “The inner critic is going to call bullshit on it.” “You're going to find a little bit of wisdom about something that needs to be healed.” — Why Nicole recommends recruiting your inner critic, rather than exiling it. The importance of recognizing unsupportive systems, in the past and present, and how they affect you: “You can stop gaslighting yourself.” What's the relationship between money and trauma? Nicole breaks down the steps for creating an ‘emotional stability plan' that can help make your work less triggering. I don't mean our current circumstances per se (although those do apply here as well). But as a child, did you ever feel like you grew up in a system that wasn't built for you? My guest today felt that way herself. Nicole Lewis Keeber has a passion for making this world a safer place to live in for those who don't feel safe. Growing up in a conservative community and Southern Baptist home, she struggled to see the world the way the systems and institutions around her taught. On top of that Nicole also struggled with school. All of this resulted in what is called little 't' trauma. Nicole has used her little 't' trauma experiences to drive her passion of helping people understand what trauma really is. When you understand what trauma actually is, you can then begin to understand why you might feel stuck, overwhelmed, having the same argument over and over or not moving forward in your career or business. Nicole uses her expertise as a therapist to help business owners and entrepreneurs understand the impact of small t trauma on businesses. Her biggest, more important work is in combining therapeutic processes with business coaching to help entrepreneurs build emotionally sustainable & financially successful businesses. Today we’re going to talk about the value of being aware of how your past traumas may be influencing the decisions you are making and the dynamics you are creating in your current business. Very often, when trauma is mentioned, our minds often go to what the therapeutic world calls Big T traumas… but, by the time we get to adulthood, many of us have experienced a series of Little t traumas, and these seemingly insignificant childhood experiences can have a very significant impact on our adult lives and livelihoods. For those of us with anxiety, it’s pretty common to go into research mode and ask ourselves: why am I feeling this way? And if you already enjoy thinking, analyzing, and solving problems like me, well, then thinking and researching why you’re anxious is your go-to pattern.  When I was writing my book, The Happier Approach, I learned that my default pattern—researching and asking why—didn’t actually serve me. The solution to my anxiety had nothing to do with the why.  So what’s the solution to anxiety if it isn’t figuring out the why?  Honestly, I was a little disappointed by the answer. It’s about getting into your body.  Moving from exploring our thoughts and opening up to our bodies is very hard for many of us. We live in our heads. We forget we have bodies. But what happens when our bodies have a lot to tell us about our experiences—and we don’t listen?  In Episode 149, I talked with Nicole Lewis-Keeber about the t-word: trauma.  In this episode, I’m talking with yoga psychotherapist and founder of Whole Health Collaborative, Sarah Dionne all about getting out of our heads and into our bodies and how we store trauma in our bodies. Listen to the full episode to hear: Sarah’s unique blend of yoga and therapy and what it means to be a yoga psychotherapist The false belief that stopping the thoughts will stop the experience How ignoring our bodies and criticizing ourselves is an act of violence against ourselves The importance of compassion and how it is key to everything Learn more about Sarah Dionne: wholehealthcollab.com Connect with Sarah on Pinterest Follow Sarah on Instagram Follow Sarah on Facebook Learn more about Nancy: Coach in Your Pocket The Happier Approach Book Live Happier Website --- Coach In Your Pocket  Helping people with High Functioning Anxiety is a personal mission for me. Trauma. This word is loaded for so many of us. When we think of trauma, we think of what we call Big T Traumas: images of war, combat, natural disasters, physical or sexual abuse, terrorism, or catastrophic accidents usually come to mind.  There are also Little T Traumas. These are often personally traumatic because of the timing, the place, or our emotional state: interpersonal conflict, divorce, infidelity, legal trouble, financial worries, moving, and many more.  Although something could be considered a “Little T” Trauma, that doesn’t mean it’s less traumatic or less damaging. Instead, it allows us to see the word trauma in a different way and realize that it can take on many shapes and forms. Today on the show, I’m kicking off the month by chatting with Nicole Lewis-Keeber. Key Take-aways: - How your past experiences might be showing up in your business and creating limitations to growth - How perfectionism and the need for control in your business are rooted in the need to feel safe - How if you're one of those people who just can't seem to find the right system for your business... it might not be the systems. - How all your weaknesses and issues become ingrained in your business -- because YOU are the one who created it

We have another great money discussion on the podcast today, and this one even blew my mind a bit! There are a lot of people in the online business world talking about and coaching on money mindset. But sometimes we need to go even deeper than our current mindset and dig into how the past shaped our relationship with money in the first place.  Nicole Lewis-Keeber is a business therapist and mindset coach who works with entrepreneurs to create and nurture healthy relationships with their businesses. She writes and speaks about the impact of small-t trauma on businesses, but she especially loves combining therapeutic processes with business coaching to help entrepreneurs build emotionally and financially stable businesses. Nicole and I talk about how she decided to combine business coaching with her background as a therapist and social worker to develop this novel approach. We also discuss the role of our childhood in forming our money mindset and why it’s so important to unpack some of our longest-held beliefs if we want to develop a great relationship with our business.

I’m so happy to get to share Nicole Lewis-Keeber with you all today. Her work is deep and has that resonance of popcorning ahas. Nicole is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker turned business therapist and mindset coach who helps entrepreneurs identify the patterns that cause friction and dysfunction in their businesses. She helps them identify trauma of all kinds, rework habits, and redefine relationships—with themselves, their team members, and their businesses. Nicole and I have known each other for several years now, so we are intimately familiar with each other’s work. Nicole shares that the Imposter Complex shows up for her in People Pleasing and Leaky Boundaries and how it’s a delicate and tricky process to determine when those things are a symptom of the Imposter Complex and when they are a symptom of trauma—because they can look very similar. I was struck by the simplicity with which she named that the Imposter Complex is the wounding around how you see yourself. Super clear and super powerful. Nicole shares some of her own experience in a school system that did not support her learning, and then how trauma can show up in your business as an entrepreneur when we replicate patterns that are disruptive and harmful to ourselves. We also talk some about our inner kiddos, as she calls the sweetest part of our formative selves whose desire for safety cannot be betrayed. I think you’ll love this conversation as I did. Today, we're having an open and down to earth conversation about a pretty serious topic. We're talking about trauma and how it affects your relationship with your business. My guest, Nicole Lewis-Keeber, is a licensed therapist and social worker turned business coach.   She focuses on the way Small T trauma (we'll talk about Small T and Big T trauma) can deeply affect the businesses we choose to build and how we show up to them. This is a sensitive topic and can be a scary topic, but I think so few people are talking about the connection between our past experiences and what we're creating with our work.   Nicole helps us see that we are not our businesses but instead are in relationship with our businesses. That distinction allows us to create healthier relationships that are financially successful and emotionally stable instead of relationships that are strewn with toxic patterns of behavior.

Today on Financial Fluency, I am happy to have Nicole Lewis-Keeber from Nicole Lewis-Keeber Coaching.  Nicole has an 18 year history as a therapist.  After dealing with this high stress position that did not pay well, she decided she had to go on her own, both for her sanity and in order to take control of her financial destiny. She is now a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, Certified Tapping Into Wealth Coach and a Money Mindset Master specializing in helping women with their money and mindset, and having a loving relationship with their business. In her position as a social worker she shared the challenges that many women face in the workplace when they are slotted into a pre-determined salary for a particular job, often expected to work overtime and beyond their pay scale out of the goodness of their own heart, especially as a caregiver or therapist. Our discussion covered the lack of a supportive system for self-employed people, in particular women, in terms of health insurance, paid family leave, maternity leave and time off to care for loved ones.  And how the current political climate is re-animating trauma within many women across the country.   Nicole began her business working with women on their mindset with money. She would look at the paradigm of their family history, and how they valued themselves and what they thought was possible.  She quickly discovered that the fear of being seen and asking for their worth were often the root causes of their resistance and feelings of being unsafe, and not the money.    Her system begins with an examination of their money, followed by their emotions, the source of their emotions, how they are triggered and how to deal with those triggers.  She teaches her clients to see their business as a relationship and to treat it with intention. You can reach Nicole via Instagram at  https://www.instagram.com/nicole.lewiskeeber/ , on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/nicolelewiskeebercoaching/ , on Twitter at @LewisKeeber and on her website:  http://nicole.lewis-keeber.com/ Nicole Shares her Personal Message Here:   Statistics show that 80% of women-owned businesses close within the first 18 months. This statistic drives me crazy because I know how insanely capable women are in creating a sustainable business that gives them financial freedom if they are able to overcome their blocks to money and success. It is my desire to flip this statistic and help women Master their mindset, Health their heart, Empower their future and Make some damn money!   Quote: “When you have had traumatic events, or abusive relationships or toxic relationships, if you don’t set up your business as a relationship with intention, you are going to default into toxic ways of relating to your business.  You are going to beat yourself up with it, you're going to be your own mean boss, and at the end of the day you are going to feel abused and you will be the one who did it to yourself.” - Nicole Lewis-Keeber     Resources: Nicole offers a 1:1 coaching program, Wealth, Worth and Wisdom Coaching, as well as an online modular program called Transformational Wealth.    Nicole is a Money Mindset Master with a background in therapy and life coaching. Using a conversational, engaging, humor-infused approach to complex challenges, Nicole’s talks and coaching programs guide business owners, coaches, and healers to reveal and release their underlying blocks and barriers to financial abundance, so that they can master their mind, heal their heart, empower their future and make some damn money!
