On episode 168 I am delighted to be joined by former international and professional footballer Julie-Ann Russell. A talented all around athlete she recently retired from football at club and international level, however has refused to sit still and has returned to play basketball and Gaelic football with Moycullen (plus running a marathon and probably a Hyrox down the line). Julie-Ann returned to the national team a year on from having her daughter Rosie reuniting with her former coach Eileen Gleeson, grabbing national attention with her goals vs England & France. On top of all of what she has achieved in sport she has built a successful corporate career with Microsoft including a stint in Australia while also playing football at a professional level. We discuss balancing a career in sport, identity as an athlete, becoming a mother and returning to play sport, perspective and awareness as a footballer, the ingredients for success on and off the pitch, and so much more. This is an honest and insightful account of what it takes to become an elite athlete for players, coaches and parents. A legend on and off the pitch, I loved this chat with Julie-Ann.  It's easy to see why she has found so much success. Greatness requires self-improvement and a whole lot of striving!'The Autobiography' by Benjamin Franklin are reflections on his life plus notable letters/publications he made. It roughly follows him from childhood to his business dealings in Philadelphia and work as a diplomat in England/France. It's not standard as he skips large events (like America gaining independence) but does give insights into his various professions, philosophy, science, war and money making ventures.I summarised the book as follows. "It's self aggrandising but shows who he was, which is a rascal/funny/kind/industrious/entrepreneurial man. What he achieved was amazing but how he did it is much more impressive. Easily is in my top 10 people to emulate and if you want to learn to be a better person it's hard to look elsewhere."I hope you have a fantastic day wherever you are in the world. The twelfth and thirteenth centuries were a time when the close friendship or petty feuding between monarchs could determine the course of history. The Capetians of France and the Angevins of England waged war, made peace, and intermarried. The lands under English control once reached to within a few miles of Paris, and those ruled by the French, at their peak, crossed the Channel and encompassed London itself. Influential women of the two royal families - including Eleanor of Aquitaine and Blanche of Castille - helped create the familial bonds that shaped the fate of the two countries. In this episode of Gone Medieval, Matt Lewis talks with Dr. Catherine Hanley to trace the great clashes and occasional friendships of two intertwined dynasties that shaped the present and the future of England and France. The Senior Producer on this episode was Elena Guthrie, the Producer is Rob Weinberg. Elma, Emily and James assess the rivalry between the Red Roses and France in the company of French podcaster Veronique Landew. Why have England been so superior over the last two years, how big is the battle between the two, and how is the head to head viewed on the other side of the channel? The foursome also reflect on England's thrashing of Italy, Emily's first try of the Six Nations, and more generally discuss pathways for young girls to get unto rugby and what needs to change to make the game more accessible.

Paddy From Providence - 0:35 Hey boys, Patty from Providence. Hey was scrolling through the old Instagram the other day and right between Hannah Palmer and Jenna Frumes. You know who I'm talking about. So I saw a little post about the Hartford Harpooners. Look, Providence and Harford have a have a long standing rivalry as "New England's Second City", but I'd love to see some some more local rugby. Have you seeing any other random teams popping up here and there? I hope you had a good Thanksgiving and happy holidays. Talk to you soon. Who are the Hartford Harpooners? It appears (as of now), that they're simply a single player signing, a confirmed home stadium, and that's about it. *Update* - Since recording, The Hartford Harpooners have signed their SECOND player, High Performance Management founder (and player journeyman) Matt Hughston. Matt has a distinguished player career, Captaining the USA South Panthers in addition to earning caps from the Ohio Aviators, Nola Gold, Rugby United New York and Old Glory DC. If the signings keep coming, there might be something here in Hahhhhtfaaaahd. Many more players (most hailing from the Fairfield Yankees) have been signed over the past two weeks. Very excited about what the Hartford have coming in the future. They best thing they can do right now is provide as much meaningful game time as possible. Helping young players build a high light reel, and allowing them to gain more exposure against MLR academies will catapult their growth as rugby players. Cheers to the Harpooners, excited for what's to come in 2021! Paddy from Providence (again) - 4:15 Hey boys, Paddy, calling from Providence again. Sorry, I forgot to mention this on my last call last weekend was trying to watch the Ireland - Scotland Autumn Nations league, and then the England - France game and and couldn't find it anywhere. I think it's on something called flow rugby or some nonsense like that, which I don't have access to. So anyway ended up watching the Maori all black by the Moana Pasifika great match, little messy rugby, but overall a lot of passion that game and I love the hackers. So, uh, just wondering if there's any way we could watch some quality International Rugby and not sure if we can, but would love some tips on that. Thanks, and again happy holiday. Hope you have a good New Year. If you want Autumn nations (which quite frankly was insanely underwhelming this year), you gotta sign up for FloRugby and pay a monthly fee. Or you can be a leech and snag a username and password. We suggest the latter. Johnny's tip for Paddy: search YouTube for the game you're looking for 10-14 hours after the game is aired, find a pirated replay and watch it before it's taken down. Moana Pasifika vs. The Maori game was passionate and will be something that NZRU focus more on in the years to come. Who doesn't like dueling tribal war dances? Not to mention the filthy offloads and exciting brand of rugby. The game ended a draw at this stage (50 mins 30 secs)                                                       Amby explains one problem he was having was all his verbal Discord communication was being done on his iPhone and it was almost out of batteries, using this as a further lever to draw the game (52 mins 20 secs) Zach reflects on the game and playing on Discord (as opposed to GMing) (54 mins 30 secs) Amby asks about the frequency of similar format games from the Minnesota Diplomacy Club, the players and any technical challenges (57 mins 20 secs) Amby reflects on the Diplomacy Broadcast Network and livestreaming of games and asks Zach about it (1 hr 1 mins 30 secs) Kaner flags the times in the stream where the game was discussed (1 hr 4 mins) Amby asks Kaner when he'll start playing these types of online games through Backstabbr and Discord.
