On this day, 13 August 1937, striking workers were massacred at the Union Flacq Sugar Estate in Mauritius. Primarily Indian labourers on sugar plantations on the island, then a British colony, had been organising for better pay, and police were being used to intimidate workers and break strikes.Workers on the Union Flacq estate were unhappy about low pay, poor quality food rations and inadequate hospital treatment. They went on strike, and on August 13, strikers were violently attacked by police, killing four and wounding six.In response to the killings, protesters set fire to sugarcane fields, and protests continued around the island for two weeks. Following a Commission of Enquiry into the incident, the British colonial government legalised labour unions, and set up an official framework for collective bargaining between workers and employers.More information, sources and map: https://stories.workingclasshistory.com/article/7741/mauritius-strike-massacreOur work is only possible because of support from you, our listeners on patreon. It's not just incomings making the headlines either. We also tackle the latest speculation surrounding several first-team stars, including Inter Milan's offer lodged for captain Cristian Romero. Following De Zerbi confirming he is yet to speak with Lucas Bergvall we discuss why the future looks like for the Swede, and questions surround Guglielmo Vicario as clubs continue to monitor the Italian goalkeeper's situation. Part 2 with Zak Palmas in the guest chair, and he's finally spilling the Japan yarns Knuckles has been making him save for the mic. The boys start with how they actually met, working side by side in the mines, ripping on people and talking about starting a podcast years before it happened. Zak reckons watching Knuckles network his way through life is what finally taught him it's not what you know, it's who you know. Then Japan. Seven trips, one stint living in Hakuba at 21 and thinking he was invincible. Working as a cleaner, skipping breakfast and lunch, snowboarding straight off shift, then sitting in the onsen dehydrated with nothing in the tank. It caught up with him at the Highland Hotel where he blacked out getting out of the hot tub and came to on the floor, butt naked, surrounded by naked blokes trying to help, and completely lost the plot before realising what had happened. Plus the kei truck era. Seven blokes in the tray drifting through Echoland, blokes nearly falling out, ending up buried in the snow. Then the night he got so blind he couldn't work out how to lock the hubs in, fell out of the ute, spent twenty minutes searching the snow for a key that was sitting in the ignition, and walked five k's home in a blizzard. Then rang his boss and told him it got stolen. ⚠️ Explicit content.#propertrueyarn

Knuckles and Zak get Cam Hay from Mustr Racing on the phone for a quick one ahead of Buckeye's first race start at the Gold Coast this weekend. Cam reckons the horse is flying. Two trials, two wins, and he still hasn't been out of second gear. First trial he jumped, went to the front and stuck it in first the whole way. Second trial they went quicker, he had to absorb pressure, they clicked him up a gear and he flew away from them. There's four more gears in there. The bit that gives Cam the most confidence is Corey Munce ringing him to say he won't let anyone else near the horse. He's my horse now. Walks around the stable like he owns the place and has shown them plenty in track work. The boys also talk about what the Cold Brew win was actually like on the day, blokes who met a couple of hours earlier hugging and crying by the finish, and Cam reckons it's one of the greatest moments of his life. The plan is to double it second or third up with a proper owners day on track.

The tables turn. After years behind the camera and in the producer's chair, Zak Palmas finally sits down as the guest, and Knuckles gets the yarn out of him. Zak breaks down his Podcast Royale fight against Matty Brown from the inside. His wife was pregnant and stuck at home with morning sickness. His trainer bailed to chase a world title. One of Australia's best boxers was meant to be in his corner and never showed. So Zak sat out the back of the Gold Coast Convention Centre completely alone, sweating bullets, watching Matty and his crew laugh around the corner, seriously considering walking out the door. The lead-up was a disaster too. Got married, did his buck's party, wrecked his ankle at said buck's party, went on his honeymoon, and rocked up to fight night on five weeks of training. Then he walked out in front of 5,500 people, a bloke who's spent his whole career as the back of someone's head on a camera, and realised it's nothing like sparring. Matty was southpaw. Zak had never sparred a southpaw in his life. His mate Yungu just kept screaming go left, go left. He got the W. He still reckons Matty won it. And now Knuckles is trying to convince him to do it all again! ⚠️ Explicit content.

He doesn't want anyone's autograph because he walks away from every shoot with a video of that person instead, which he reckons is worth more. No idols either, just running his own race, and the novelty of rubbing shoulders with Chris Hemsworth and Max Verstappen wears off quicker than you'd think. His biggest fuck-up is a good one. Eighteen hour shoot on the back of fourteen straight days, back at the accommodation copying two terabytes off twelve cards, so cooked he hit Control X instead of Control C and wiped half a card of factory footage they only had one day of access to. Call it thirty to a hundred grand, gone in a silent keystroke. Plus the Tag Heuer after-party at the Melbourne Grand Prix in a $30 million house that looks completely normal from the street until the entire front yard lifts up on hydraulics and you drive down a spiral ramp into a Tony Stark supercar lair with Peking Duk playing. And the reason the Prince of Johor has a collection of white albino alligators, which is that you can't legally export alligators from the States, but apparently an albino one doesn't count as an alligator. Sitting on top of Table Mountain in Cape Town, which he points out is a fair way from Dalby. Nights out in Piss Alley in Shinjuku, where three streets are packed with about 150 tiny family-run bars that fit three patrons each and some won't even let tourists in. Then Malaysia. Filming a vehicle announcement with the princes of Johor, wrapped in the afternoon, and found a 24 hour go-kart track. There's a bar at the track and they do not care how full you are. Started pissing down rain, the whole place was theirs, staff jumped in karts and started chucking buckets of water on the track so the boys could do drifties at midnight. And the big one. First trip out of Australia at 23, on a Contiki with 14 Aussie blokes in the Austrian ski town of Hopfgarten. Dead bar, a house drink called a fruit salad, a Stratocaster on the stage, and the moment Geordie started playing Highway to Hell a whole bus of Australians walked through the door. This guided meditation offers a different way in: two simple but profound self-inquiry questions that take you beneath the noise of the thinking mind and into direct experience of your own presence.Using breath as an anchor and body awareness as the doorway, this practice moves you out of your head and into embodied stillness. Along the way, you'll be guided through a powerful technique — silently asking "I wonder what my next thought will be?" — and discover what actually happens when you go looking for it. For many people, the mind simply stops. A gap opens. And in that gap is something quieter, steadier, and more truly you than any thought has ever been.Whether you're new to meditation or a long-time practitioner, this episode is a gentle but potent reminder: you are not your thoughts, your feelings, or your beliefs. Part 7 with Geordie Lillis from Creators of Awesome, and it takes a heavy turn. Geordie starts light, growing up on a bit of land outside Dalby with his old man teaching at the local state school, and reckons Progress Street in Kwinalei has seen the least progress of any street in the country. The pub's shut down too, so it's Kaimkillenbun for a feed these days. Then he tells the yarn about his high school principal, Stacey Train, who years later was one of the three people involved in the Wieambilla shootings. Geordie's memory of her is a good one. The day a supply teacher marched him and his mates off the school oval for climbing trees at lunch, dumped them in Stacey's office, and Stacey just looked at them and said “you probably shouldn't have been in the tree, so walk out of here and look sad.” Geordie talks about the subtle signs he can see looking back, the family relationships that were already breaking down, and what it's like watching someone you knew as a decent human end up somewhere unthinkable. His take is that you've got to watch who you surround yourself with, because you never know where you end up. Need a video done? Find Creators of Awesome. ⚠️ Explicit content. In this episode, Katie is tackling the question so many wedding suppliers ask themselves: why do couples enquire, ask for prices, seem interested, then disappear? The simple answer is that your enquiry reply might be giving information, but not creating enough certainty for the couple to take the next step. Katie shares her own experience from running a bridal shop, when sales stopped landing in the same way even though the dresses, appointments and service had not really changed, and how that taught her sales is a skill, not a personality type.Katie also explains why feature led replies can lead to price shopping, why templates can give a false sense of security, and why generic AI is only as strong as the strategy behind the prompt. She shares how WedPro Sales, inside WedPro Studio, helps wedding suppliers understand the nuance of an enquiry, reply with more strategy, and win conversations that may otherwise have gone cold.Episode Highlights:Why wedding enquiries go quiet after asking for pricesThe difference between giving information and creating certaintyWhy selling on features can lead to price shoppingWhy sales is a skill, not a personality typeHow templates can save time but still lose bookingsWhy generic AI can miss the real hesitation behind an enquiryHow WedPro Sales helps wedding suppliers reply with strategy, not guessworkHow wedding suppliers are already using WedPro Studio to win bookings and reopen ghosted conversationsWant help turning more wedding enquiries into bookings without relying on generic templates or awkward sales scripts?WedPro Studio is now open for wedding suppliers who want smarter support with content, enquiry replies, follow ups, sales conversations and client experience, all backed by real wedding industry strategy.Inside WedPro Studio, WedPro Sales helps you understand the nuance of an enquiry, identify what the couple may need to feel confident, and create a clear, human reply that moves the conversation forward. Part 3 with Geordie Lillis from Creators of Awesome, and this one goes off. Geordie kicks off with a proper true yarn. At 14, riding his motorbike on the family farm, he got struck by lightning. The bolt hit the power line above him and arced through the ground into his bike. Rubber wheels, rubber gloves, rubber boots. That's the only reason he's here to tell it. Mum watched him vanish in a white flash. He's got the GoPro footage too. The lightning gave him a heart arrhythmia that stuck around until he broke his neck at 21 and the shock reset his heart. Turns out breaking your neck's not all bad news. Geordie walks through the recovery. 21 years old, working on movies at Village Roadshow, one bad skim board fall on the beach, hairline fracture through C1, and months lying in bed counting flies. Then a university lecturer offered him a job teaching filmmaking around Queensland to little indigenous communities. The Pomperaw yarn about handing shoelaces to barefoot kids who turned them into fishing nets by lunch is a ripper. Plus a full breakdown of how a film set actually works. Cinematographer, focus puller, second AC, video utility. And Geordie's specific job on Thor: Ragnarok running hundreds of metres of cable so Chris Hemsworth could see the Hulk in his eyeline. This episode is part of a nine-part series on commissions. How to prepare for them, respond to them, deliver them, and, crucially, how to stop them burning you out. If you haven't followed the podcast yet, hit follow so you don't miss an episode. Today, episode four of nine. And this is where the series shifts gears. For the last three episodes, we have been doing the preparation work. The mindset. The five signatures of under-pricing. The commission ecosystem. Today, an enquiry has arrived. This is the moment most artists get wrong because this is the moment their nervous system takes over. When an enquiry lands in your inbox. And before you've finished reading it, your stomach has tightened, your brain is already drafting a reply, and somewhere in the next three sentences you're going to offer availability, ideas, enthusiasm, and a half-committed yes – all before you know you are a good fit. And the principle is this. Before you reply with anything, you filter. How, is what today´s episode is about. KEY TAKEAWAYS Ceri´s short enquiry form is a low-friction sieve: it quietly filters out tire-kickers, and a serious client will fill it in within 10 minutes. The right questions reveal what they actually want, how committed they are, whether they really get your work, and whether their budget and timeline are realistic. After the enquiry form, you move into a chemistry call – 30 minutes - to ask important questions and spot red flags. Then, produce an alignment document to further test understanding. If the client confirms the alignment document, you move forward; if they come back with big changes, it's a sign you weren't fully aligned on the call – it's far better to catch that now than 3 months into making. BEST MOMENTS “Stage one of responding to any inquiry is the initial filter, low friction, high signal, a sieve, not a conversation.” “If those signals are weak, you slow things down, you don't ghost them, but you don't rescue them, you reply politely with more questions,” “The alignment document - a short-written document that confirms in writing what you heard, not a proposal, not a quote, an alignment document.” For a text version of today's teaching, plus new practical guidance every week, you can subscribe to Beat the Block at http://cerihand.com/subscribe EPISODE RESOURCES First episode of this 9-part series - https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/designing-the-way-you-want-to-work-the-mindset/id1709105337?i=1000769915059 HOST BIO With over 35 years in the art world, Ceri has worked closely with leading artists and arts professionals, managed public and private galleries and charities, and curated more than 250 exhibitions and events. This episode is part of a nine-part series on commissions. How to prepare for them, respond to them, deliver them, and, crucially, how to stop them burning you out. If you haven't followed the podcast yet, hit follow so you don't miss an episode. Today, episode three of nine. The first practical stage of the commission process. Your commission ecosystem. In episode one, we did the mindset work. In episode two, we named the five mistakes that almost every underpriced commission has in common. Today we start building the structure. Here is the principle. Stage one of any serious commission practice is the invisible work. The four decisions you make, in advance, before any enquiry arrives. These decisions form what I call your commission ecosystem. Build it once. Revisit it annually. Let it do the work of saying no, so you do not have to do it in the moment. Why does this matter? Because the moment an enquiry arrives, your nervous system will want to say yes. The ecosystem, written down in advance, is the only thing standing between that yes and the resentment you will feel six months later. Four decisions. Let me walk you through each. KEY TAKEAWAYS Set a clear annual profit target for commissions - pricing will stop feeling vague or reactive any you will know how many of each type of commission you need to complete to keep your practice viable. A written rules list and clarity on materials, scale, and time protect you from burnout work and pull in the commissions that genuinely grow your practice.     BEST MOMENTS “The year is the unit, not the commission. Once you know what the year needs to earn, every individual commission conversation becomes easier, because you know what you're measuring against.” “This is the work. Nobody else can do it for you. But once it's done, every inquiry that arrives from that moment onward lands into a structure that already knows how to respond to it.” “Clarity makes an artist easier to collaborate with, not harder. It gives the people commissioning them something stable to work with.” For a text version of today's teaching, plus new practical guidance every week, you can subscribe to Beat the Block at https://cerihand.com/subscribe/ EPISODE RESOURCES Episode 1 of this 9-part series - https://podcasts.apple.com/es/podcast/designing-the-way-you-want-to-work-the-mindset/id1709105337?i=1000769915059 HOST BIO With over 35 years in the art world, Ceri has worked closely with leading artists and arts professionals, managed public and private galleries and charities, and curated more than 250 exhibitions and events.
