Thomas is joined by Debbie Levin, CEO of the Environmental Media Association, to discuss the role of media in shaping sustainability consciousness and how to effectively communicate about environmental issues. Debbie shares the importance of being gracious and non-judgmental when sharing knowledge on how to live a healthy, clean, and sustainable life. She explains how her organization has successfully leveraged celebrities' platforms to spread awareness on crucial environmental issues and how the “Emma Green Seal” has influenced TV and movie productions to operate more sustainably. She and Thomas also explore the impact of the LA fires on both the entertainment industry and the larger climate change dialogue. This conversation covers a range of pressing environmental issues, but ultimately concludes on a note of hopefulness–that we all want our families and loved ones to be safe and healthy, and we can make a difference by starting from that common ground. While the climate change narrative has mostly focused on the concentration of CO2 and other greenhouse gasses in the atmosphere since the industrial revolution, we've ignored the essential role that the water cycle plays in regulating global temperatures. In this series I'll be speaking to an incredible list of scientists, farmers, and restorationists who are dedicated to reviving the precious waterways of the world. From the urban environment to the deep seas, our actions will determine whether or not we preserve our aquatic resources and all the life that depends on them for future generations.    In this first episode I got to speak with Enric Sala, a renowned ecologist making a clear case for why protecting nature is our best health insurance, and why it makes economic sense. Enric is the director of National Geographic's Pristine Seas project (which has succeeded in protecting more than 5 million sq km of ocean and created 22 marine reserves). Dr. Sala has received the Young Global Leader Award by the World Economic Forum, a Research Award from the Spanish Geographical Society, the Lowell Thomas Award from the Explorers Club, and a Hero Award from the Environmental Media Association. In his new book “The Nature of Nature: Why We Need the Wild,” he tells the story of his scientific awakening and his transition from academia to activism. More importantly, he shows the economic wisdom of making room for nature, even as the population becomes more urbanized, and how saving nature can save us all, by reversing conditions that led to the coronavirus pandemic and preventing other global catastrophes. In this interview we begin by unpacking the changes that have occurred in our oceans in the last few decades and how this is affecting people all over the world, even if you don't live anywhere near the sea.  Enric also offers a lot of hope that our oceans can recover if we act swiftly and give them the space and protection to regenerate.  I learned a lot from this talk and as I begin to learn more about how marine health is closely linked to terrestrial health, I would encourage those of you listening to examine how your own habits and lifestyle choices are connected to ocean health in ways that can be hard to see.

My conversation with Debbie Levin was one of my favorite conversations this year. Some notes from our conversation: Debbie went to USC film school and wanted to be a film critic. She did celebrity interviews that she got just by calling them. These included George Segal, Richard Dreyfuss and Henry “the Fonz” Winkler. The Environmental Media Association, which Debbie has spent her career with was started by Norman Lear and Alan Horn. Debbie's good friend is Wendie Malick who starred on Just Shoot Me! I mentioned Ed Begley Jr. who was on a documentary about the EV1, Who Killed the Electric Car. Debbie told a story about Ed riding his bicycle to the Oscars. Debbie convinced Wendie Malick to get David Spade to host the 10thanniversary of the EMA awards ceremony with her. Debbie helped build the brand around the EMA by recruiting Amy Smart to help out (She later set Amy up with her future husband.) Debbie mentioned not knowing what a Step and Repeat is…in case you don't either. So I told Debbie I don't love the paper straw but that I had used a straw made of pasta which we both agreed was genius. So now I know where you can get them. Debbie can be reached at the Environmental Media Association and at green4ema at the socials including Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and LinkedIn.

Regenerative Skills

Welcome to the first episode in a brand new series focusing on waterway regeneration. In the last few years of hosting this show it's become vividly clear to me just how important and yet overlooked an issue that the health of our water cycles are. Resources: Get the book The Nature of Nature https://www.nationalgeographic.org/projects/pristine-seas/

Conserving and protecting our oceans and coasts requires grassroots advocacy and full engagement in the political process. While the lists of challenges facing our oceans is long, the potential solutions are relatively well-known. However, securing the strong policy changes needed to achieve these solutions requires leadership and support from elected officials. Building this political will requires a strategic effort among ocean lovers, ocean conservation groups, and elected officials. At a recent panel discussion in Los Angeles hosted by the Environmental Media Association, experts in ocean policy, advocacy, and grassroots organizing addressed how political hardball can save our oceans and coasts. Their collective conclusion was that only by fully participating in the political process can we achieve lasting victories to secure the health of our oceans. Listen to the full discussion featuring: Salud Carbajal Angela Howe, Esq., Dr. David Wilmot, Ph.D., and moderated by Ashlan Cousteau.

President's Speaker Series - Video

The Hollywood Actor and Environmentalist Proves How Living Green Is Good For You and Your Wallet What do George Clooney, Leonardo DiCaprio and Ed Begley Jr. have in common? These Hollywood actors can add the title Environmental Activist to their résumé. Although green is their shared motto, while Clooney purchases Versace dresses for his lady and DiCaprio snags Los Angeles Laker tickets for his on-again/off-again girlfriend, Begley buys his wife hemp thongs. Begley, 61, said, "It's tough trying to be organic and a hip person." But fear not, Begley is one of the hippest folks in the green world. So hip, he was invited to speak at the President's Speaker Series, hosted by Cal State Monterey Bay (CSUMB), about the green life he leads, in which people can "live simply, so others can simply live." The World Theater and President of CSUMB treat students and the public to view well known speakers throughout the year. The President's Speaker Series is free of charge to all who attend. To kick off this round, Begley was selected as the first speaker. "Arguably, he's one of the first people in popular culture that has embraced a green lifestyle and engaged it," said Chas Croslin, World Theater Box Office Analyst. The fact that Begley is a popular individual with plenty of movies under his belt is an "additional benefit of reaching out to people that may or may not be familiar with the aspects of a green lifestyle," said Croslin. Both the director of the World Theater, Joe Cardinalli, and the Operations Manager, Phil Esparza, worked in combination to invite Begley to the Series. Esparza has known Begley for over 30 years. He said Begley is a "genuine human being, even if he is in Hollywood." Esparza adds, Begley is "very knowledgeable and is a great spokesperson." In addition to Begley's work on several TV series such as "Arrested Development," "Veronica Mars," and "Six Feet Under," Emmy nominated actor Begley utilizes his energy elsewhere. Having served on environmental boards like The Environmental Media Association and The Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy, Begley continues to work with other organizations like Friends of The Earth and has been green since the 1970s. It all began during Begley's childhood, while he grew up in smoggy Los Angeles. "I just got fed up with it after the 50s and 60s, being in that horrible choking smog, it hurt my lungs so badly," recalls Begley. Among the smog as an impact, Begley's father, a man who lived through the Great Depression, was also a strong influence. As Begley was raised, he remembered his father "saving every bit of tin foil, every bit of string, turning off the lights and water." When Earth Day began in 1970, Begley's father passed. However, Begley said he "did all the activities in the 1970s much to honor him [his father]." In his 20s, Begley felt "poised and ready" to tackle environmental issues because "it seemed like the right thing to do." His work as an actor in the past and present poses difficulties. "It's a real challenge to work in an industry that was so very wasteful and indeed celebrated waste and excess." To address this issue, Begley takes action himself by not only talking the talk but walking the walk and driving the drive. He drives a beige Toyota Prius. Begley aims to implement environmental messages in movies and television programs. Begley believes, "You get people's attention if you're doing it yourself." The actor engages in composting, recycling, and riding a bike in the morning to power his toaster, not to mention these activities are indeed done by himself. He notes, "If you do this stuff, never tell people what you're going to do, tell them what you've done."
