Professor Michael Levin explores the revolutionary concept of diverse intelligence, demonstrating how cognitive capabilities extend far beyond traditional brain-based intelligence. Drawing from his groundbreaking research, he explains how even simple biological systems like gene regulatory networks exhibit learning, memory, and problem-solving abilities. Levin introduces key concepts like "cognitive light cones" - the scope of goals a system can pursue - and shows how these ideas are transforming our approach to cancer treatment and biological engineering. His insights challenge conventional views of intelligence and agency, with profound implications for both medicine and artificial intelligence development. This deep discussion reveals how understanding intelligence as a spectrum, from molecular networks to human minds, could be crucial for humanity's future technological development. Contains technical discussion of biological systems, cybernetics, and theoretical frameworks for understanding emergent cognition. If this has happened to you, you are definitely not alone. Too often, though, we think the problem we are trying to solve is external. We think we have a problem with a system or a strategy so we spend a lot of time and energy working to "fix it." But the problem isn't external. How do I know? Because if it were an external issue it would have been fixed by now! (Clearly because you've done the work, right?!) What's happening is there is something out of alignment and we need to make the shift from being problem-focused (external) to being POWER-focused (internal) and learn how to embody a more elevated version of YOU! John Remsen, Jr. is one of the country's leading authorities on law firm leadership, management, marketing, and business development. He's the Founder of TheRemsenGroup, a consulting firm that works exclusively with law firms to help them develop and implement strategic objectives to improve cohesiveness, performance, and profitability. John is a frequent speaker and author on law firm leadership and marketing. He's spoken at conferences of the American Bar Association, Association of Legal Administrators, and the Legal Marketing Association. Additionally, his articles have appeared in publications such as the ABA Journal, Law 360, and Lawyers Weekly, among many other prestigious journals. In 2001, John created the Managing Partner Forum, the nation's richest source of information and a highly acclaimed conference series for leaders of midsize law firms. With decades of experience in law firm leadership and management, John knows that being an effective leader requires credibility, a firm-first attitude, a positive mindset, and the ability to be a catalyst for change. In this episode… No one is taught how to become an effective leader in law school. However, leadership is a crucial part of running any business. So where can leaders (and aspiring leaders) turn to develop their skills, support their firms, and become the best leaders possible? According to John Remsen, the key characteristics that set outstanding leaders apart include a firm-first attitude, optimism, communication skills, and the ability to enact change. But leadership goes beyond these attributes. John adds that leaders should also seek development outside of the industry, avoid tolerating toxic behaviors in the workplace, and make decisions that better the firm — instead of trying to make everyone happy. In this episode of The Lawyer's Edge Podcast, Elise Holtzman is joined by John Remsen, Founder of TheRemsenGroup, to talk about the qualities of effective leaders and why they're valuable within a law firm. John also shares advice on seeking support from other leaders and associations, the successful strategies law firms use to select their leaders, and tips to develop future leaders at your firm.

Nowadays there is a lot of talk about how everybody can be an entrepreneur, but the truth is that there are some essential characteristics that separate the good ones from the not so good! So, we thought it would be a great idea to share what we believe to be the eight most essential characteristics that amazing entrepreneurs should have. Of course, even the great ones don’t possess each and every one of these, and so it’s OK if you don’t either. Not possessing one presents an opportunity to grow, or a great moment to find a partner! In our discussion, we speak to the characteristics of optimism, commitment to lifelong learning, having a high risk tolerance and being able to separate ego from success and failure. Our key characteristics also include passion, decisiveness, being future-focussed and able to analyze the trends, and finally, having the flexibility to change with one’s environment. Remember, it takes a special person to fully encapsulate all the above qualities, so don’t feel like you have to exactly match all of them. The reality though is every entrepreneur is going to be faced with the need to access at least a little bit of all these, so make sure you take a listen and find out how you measure up!
