Arturo: Going off of Barry Posner's 5 practices of Exemplary Leadership, “effective leaders are to have an understanding of their own values”. We would love to hear about your values?Bill: I'd have to talk a little bit first about their origins. My mom was a homemaker, formerly a teacher and my dad was a pastor in the Lutheran church. From early on, I remember a great sense of responsibility and fidelity to one's family, how to support one's family, how to encourage family bonds, and also challenge in an appropriate way. Another is a sense of responsibility to make things better than when you found them, it's a sense that you're entrusted with a certain amount of time, different people and different programs, and there's a responsibility that goes along with trying to improve all those things. Then maybe the third, fourth, and fifth that come from my own faith as a Christian, are faith, hope, and love.Armando: We know you're grounded in your wife and kids. What are the three most important lessons you want your kids to know before leaving the nest.Bill: I want my kids to have this understanding of themselves as having the power and ability to create environments that are not just conducive to their own flourishing but to others in their community. Another lesson is to understand that they are loved even when the world is a place that may not feel like it's loving them back but it's there if they create it. And back to my values, to try to make things better than how they found it. Arturo: In the previous interview, you mentioned a quote from your parents, “be like a duck, smooth on the surface but underneath, scurrying like crazy”. What tactics do you recommend to students who are “scurrying like crazy” maybe without direction.Bill: I'd like to use a new metaphor. “To see their life as a mountain with no top”. What I mean by that, is that life can be really exciting and fun if you focus more on the process and become less focused on specific outcomes. If there's that hope and faith that things will turn out the way they're supposed to be. It's a lot of fun to be able to focus on what you're doing at the moment and what you can do today to make yourself the best possible version and what you can do tomorrow to continue that growth. Along with that metaphor is the idea that we need to rest, stop, and look around at what you've accomplished so far. See who's accompanying you on that climb and take a look at the beautiful scenery from different vantage points in life. Maybe look up the mountain and see which routes make the most sense to move forward to the next ledge. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Next month marks the 10th year that I've been doing my podcast “Leadership Biz Cafe”, something that I started as an excuse to talk with some fascinating people about leadership and which has since become one of the most popular leadership podcasts out there. Although I didn't make any plans to celebrate this milestone, I'm delighted that I've been able to welcome such incredible guests as Tom Peters and now with this episode, another one of my leadership heroes, Jim Kouzes. Jim is the Dean's Executive Fellow of Leadership at the Leavey School of Business at Santa Clara University. But what I'm sure many of you probably know him for is the 30-plus books he's co-written on leadership, including the international bestseller “The Leadership Challenge”. For this episode, I've invited Jim to join me to talk about his latest book, “Everyday People, Extraordinary Leadership: How To Make A Difference Regardless of Your Title, Role, or Authority”. Over the course of this episode, some of the topics Jim and I discuss include: How leaders can avoid losing credibility by claiming they stand for one value, but then do something that goes against that stated value. What behaviours leaders need to tap into to get their employees to buy-in to their vision for their organization, and encourage them to take an active role in.How to take the lessons of the COVID-19 pandemic to encourage more experimentation and taking risks in order to evolve and grow. How leaders without any formal title can help empower their colleagues to bring their best efforts. Why it's vital for leaders to instill a sense of community and belonging if they are to attract and retain employees. It's truly an honour to be able to speak with such an esteemed thought leader in the leadership space about something we both care deeply about. I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did. Ep. 60 - Roxanne Kaufman Elliott: How to Inspire Leadership, Develop Leaders, & Transform Cultures

Our guest, Roxanne Kaufman Elliott, has spent much of her professional life exploring what makes the difference between failure and success – and she’s found that it comes down to exemplary leadership. The good news is that there’s an exemplary leader in all of us – we just need a way to unleash it. As President and i3 Leadership Master at ProLaureate Ltd., a transformational leadership development firm, Roxanne helps both individuals and organizations unleash their leadership potential and transform cultures. She’s also a certified executive coach, facilitator, award-winning business marketing strategist, and the author of Never Wear Read: A Leadership Love Story. Roxanne started her professional life in drama, and later as a theater administrator. She then made a natural segue to working at a small company manufacturing specialty resin products for the construction industry. As part of a small leadership team, they grew that small business into a thriving company… before it was purchased by a large European company. That was a pivotal and heart-breaking moment for Roxanne. She saw the business philosophy and priorities shift away from communication, cooperation, and collaboration. She had to leave. She spent years learning about leadership from different organizations and research before founding ProLaureate, where she offers three distinct coaching services: The Leadership Challenge – Primarily cultural development based off of the book of the same name, written by Jim Kouzes and Barry Posner. This training often involves individual coaching with everyone in an organization. i3 Executive Coaching – One-on-one and small group coaching for executive teams that want to develop strategic leadership skills (with an emphasis on strategy). ROXTalks – Speaking engagements and keynotes for large groups or organizations covering topics like “The Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership” and “The Secret Sauce.” The Leadership Challenge Jim Kouzes and Barry Posner co-authored The Leadership Challenge and created the LPI 360 assessment around the Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership. These practices are in schools, churches, Fortune 50 corporations, and everything in between. It's really a movement to create a shared language for leadership, level the field of what leadership is, and build genuine leadership within organizations. Each one of the five practices are the tip of an iceberg that goes deep into developing our own personal leadership, which always comes first, and then our ability to lead others. One of the things that Roxanne loves about Kouzes and Posner is that they say the key to success, in anything that we do, is to be in love. Think about it: when we're in love, we're passionate about what it is we are in love with. And, in this case, it's our business; it's our people; it's the work that we do; it's the impact that we make; it's the change that we bring. The Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership that guide organizations and people to leadership success: Model the Way – Walk your talk. How many times have we had leaders say one thing and do another? Inspire a Shared Vision – This is critically important because most people struggle with vision statements, sharing visions, and getting other people to buy in. Challenge the Process – Experiment and take risks. You know the old saying if it ain't broke, don't fix it? Well, if it ain't broke, break it... and see if you can make it better. Enable Others to Act – Foster collaboration, build trust, and strengthen others by helping them develop their own competencies. Encourage the Heart – Recognize people for their contribution, celebrate values, and celebrate accomplishments (especially the little ones). A handshake, a twinkle in your eye, a genuine appreciation, and saying thank you go further than just about anything else. The last one is Roxanne’s favorite, and it is the basis for the title of her book, Never Wear Read: A Leadership LOVE Story (emphasis mine). A lot of executives balk at this idea, at first, but this is the heart of it all – this is the passion that brings success to everything we do. I appreciate Roxanne sharing so much about her experiences and coaching, and what she teaches parallels a core tenet of improvisation: providing support. Leadership can’t lead well in a silo, and teams can’t perform at their best without being given the tools they need to be successful. How can you start providing support in your life to train as a stronger leader?   Resources: Connect with Roxanne: ProLaureate.com | LinkedIn | Twitter “Life’s Work: An Interview with Kevin Spacey” Production & Development for Improv Is No Joke by Podcast Masters Learn more about your ad choices. In this podcast Prof John Botha from Frankston Hospital in Melbourne, Australia discusses several aspects of exemplary leadership in the ICU. He talks about why he was attracted to ICU; some of his early mentoring; how to learn from even difficult mentors; how an exceptional ICU environment requires trust, a sense of humour and respect for difference in opinion; the importance of encouraging silence in critical clinical moments; the value of listening; the things out of the ICU that keep him from being stressed; the sense of deep connection to humanity he feels from managing the critically ill; what is required for high quality end of life care; and a method for managing other clinicians who may be more proactive with interventions. This podcast was created to help and inspire intensive care clinicians to improve the care we give to our patients by providing interesting and thought-provoking conversations with highly respected and experienced clinicians. In each episode, Andrew Davies, an intensivist in Melbourne, Australia, speaks with a guest for the purpose of hearing their perspectives on the habits and behaviours that they believe are the most important for improving the outcomes of our patients. Things like bringing our best selves to work each day, optimal communication, coping with stress and preventing burn out, working well in a team, and interacting with patient’s families and the many other health professionals we deal with on a daily basis. The podcast is less about the drugs, devices and procedures that can be administered and more about the habits, behaviours and philosophies that can help intensive care clinicians to master the craft of intensive care.
