Lead Exposure and Its Effects on Child Development Although lead exposure in childhood is less common now than in the past, 3% of children in the US have elevated lead levels. And many parents may remember the numerous children exposed to lead relatively recently in Flint Michigan. Exposure to lead during childhood increases the risk for diminished intellectual and academic abilities, higher rates of neurobehavioral disorders and attention deficits, and lower birth weight in children. In this episode we discuss possible sources for lead exposure in childhood, routine screening for elevated lead levels, preventing lead exposure, and treatment of elevated lead levels. Chief of Police is a title typically given to the head of a police department, but that simple definition gets very confusing very quickly. Sheriffs are the name we give to elected officials who preside over county law enforcement in the US, while Chief's of Police typically preside over municipal police agencies.Sometimes Chief's are elected. Sometimes they are appointed by a mayor or city council. Sometimes they are selected through the civil service act. Sometimes they are not called Chief's of Police at all.Police Commissioners are another term, frequently found in the larger metropolitan areas Chief,When we talk about the police chief's we are talking about the head of a municipal police department not affiliated with the local sheriff's office. What do chief's do?Sorry to make you laugh, it wasn't a trick question.Chiefs of police are typically responsible for operational oversight, budgeting, planning, discipline, direction, regulations, communications, and in smaller agencies general police work. All at the behest of a governing body, either mayor or city council. It's not an easy job.I rose to the highest levels of administration in my police department. I was third in charge, so while I didn't ever actually do the job, I did learn one thing. You can't pay me enough to do it.[Insert Intro]George Sippert spent 32 years serving the people of Flint Township Michigan. Flint township is located on the west side of the city of Flint Michigan. He took over as chief of police in 2004 an served until 2018. Throughout his career, Sippert also served in various roles including: Field Training Officer, Firearms instructor, School Resource Officer, Community Policing Division Commander and Motorcycle Unit Commander. He is also a graduate of the Federal Bureau of Investigation's National Academy, a member of the Michigan Association of Chiefs of Police, Genesee County Chiefs Association, Central Michigan Chiefs Association, Genesee County 911 Advisory Board and the Flint Area Narcotics Group Advisory Board.I have had the pleasure of knowing and speaking with George on a number occasions and I couldn't think of anyone better to discuss the role of the police chief.

He got a scholarship to the Stella Adler acting school and left everything behind in Spain to start over in the United States and has now performed comedy in Spanish, Italian and English He gives great advice on acting, music, comedy and life in general. On April 24, 2021 when had our first guest on the show, Guy Merritt, a Flint Michigan native who joined our Facebook group and related his triangular UFO encounter with us. Quickly Guy became a friend of ours and we had him on multiple times as both a returning guest and co-host on the show. This was the interview that started it all. Guy has given us permission to re-use the zoom video (we were just a audio podcast starting out at that time) and since we're both dealing with illnesses, I thought tonight would be a good time re-release the interview that started this journey down the rabbit hole for us. This is just the video interview portion and not the audio podcast which also has a news section in the show. There was a moment where things got hard during the interview and I cut the majority of that out but we all needed a break. It was a very emotional part of the interview. Every week here on the show we talk about vulnerabilities and exploits. Typically we recommend that organizations remediate these vulnerabilities in some way. But how? And more importantly, which ones? Some tools we have to help us are actually not all that helpful at time, such as: Mitre Att&ck - Don't get me wrong, this is a great project and Adam and team is doing a great job. However, its not a complete picture as we can't possibly know about every attack vector (or can we?). People seem to think if they cover everything in the framework they will be secure. You can't cover everything in the framework because each technique can be utilized by an attack in a hundred different ways. CVSS - Anyone can apply a score, but who is correct? Good that we have a way to score things, but then people will just use this as a basis for what they patch and what they do not. Also, chaining vulnerabilities is a thing, but we seem to lack any way to assign a score to multiple vulnerabilities at once (different from a technique). Also, some things don't get a CVE, how are you tracking, assessing risk, and patching these? CISA KEV - Again, love the project and Tod is doing amazing work. However, what about things that do not get a CVE? Also, how do you track every incident of an attacker doing something in the wild? Also, there is frequency, just because something got exploited once, does that mean you need to patch it right away? How are we tracking how often something is exploited as it is not just a binary "yes, its exploited" or "no, it is not". EPSS - I do like the concept and Wade and Jay are doing amazing work. However, there seems to be a "gut reaction" thing going on where we do see things being exploited, but the EPSS score is low. How can we get better at predicting? We certainly have enough data, but are we collecting the right data to support a model that can tell us what the attackers will do next? Our featured interview tonight is with Noah Slasinski. Noah is a 28-year old pipe smoker from Michigan. His interview is part of our ongoing series of pipe smokers that are under the age of 30. He started with a Missouri Meerschaum hard wood pipe in his late teens and then tried just about every type of tobacco smoking and vaping, but eventually came back exclusively to pipe smoking about a year and a half ago. YouTube videos and Paul's Pipe Shop in Flint MI helped him along the way. Similar to some of our other younger pipe enthusiasts, Noah was influenced by writers and intellectuals that he appreciates, such as Carl Jung, C.S. Lewis, Tolkien, Mark Twain and more, as they were all pipe smokers. At the top of the show we will have a trip report on the NASPC show from this past weekend in Colombus from Dave Peterson.

Flint was once one of the richest cities in the United States. But in the 1980s, it was badly affected by the downturn in car manufacturing and by 2014 it was nearly bankrupt. To save money, the city switched its water supply away from Lake Huron to its own Flint River, but state officials failed to treat the river water properly. As a result lead, a powerful neurotoxin, was released into the drinking water.Despite mounting evidence, officials denied anything was wrong and it took them a year and a half to switch water supply back to Lake Huron. But many residents of Flint –a majority African-American city with high rates of poverty– have been left fearful about the long term impacts on their children.Rob Walker speaks to lifelong Flint resident Jeneyah McDonald who had two young children at the time. He also hears from Dr Mona Hanna-Attisha – a paediatrician and professor of public health– who helped bring the scandal to national attention after showing that lead had found its way into the bloodstreams of the city's children.(Photo: Bottled water donations to help with the Flint Michigan water crisis in 2016. As the 19th and 21st U.S. Surgeon General, Dr. Vivek Murthy has faced some of the most difficult health crises in recent history. Murthy, appointed by Presidents Obama and Biden, shaped the federal response to the opioid epidemic, the rise of e-cigarettes, the Flint Michigan water crisis, and the COVID-19 pandemic. He also co-founded Doctors for America, which works to promote more affordable health care, and TrialNetworks, a biotechnology company that helps improve clinical drug trials. Murthy has pushed to reduce access to social media for young children, pointing out the harmful effects of bullying, a lack of in-person interactions, and harassment. Recently, Murthy has written about and spoken on the negative health effects of loneliness, calling it an “epidemic” that increases the risk of early death and other social problems. On April 16, 2024, Vivek Murthy came to the Sydney Goldstein Theater in San Francisco to talk about how to combat loneliness with public radio journalist David Greene.
If our planet turns to Dune, how will you survive? We're already experiencing water crises in thousands of global cities, places like Flint Michigan, or even native reserves in Canada. How can you ensure you'll get good, healthy, clean drinking water? In this episode of TechFirst, we explore the critical global challenge of securing clean water, a resource essential yet scarce for over 2 billion people worldwide. With a focus on innovative solutions, John Koetsier interviews Brian Sheng, CEO and co-founder of Aquaria, a company at the forefront of developing atmospheric water generators capable of extracting clean water from the air, ranging from 24 to 2,600 gallons daily. Sheng discusses the technology's workings, its potential to address water scarcity effectively, especially in areas with limited access to clean water, and the company's vision for scaling up to support communities and potentially entire cities with sustainable, clean water obtained directly from the atmosphere. 00:00 Atmospheric Water Generator 01:19 The Global Water Crisis: Challenges and Solutions 05:13 How Atmospheric Water Generators Work: Technology Explained 11:00 The Future of Water: Scaling Up and Making it Affordable 12:48 Comparing Water Solutions: Desalination and Atmospheric Water Generators 21:45 The Vision for a Sustainable Water Future
