In case you've never heard of it, the march was a watershed moment in the Chicano Movement, in which the Los Angeles Police met a peaceful Chicana-Chicano-led protest against the Vietnam War with extreme violence. The ensuing police riot claimed three lives, most notably that of Journalist Ruben Salazar. It remains an important chapter in Chicana-Chicano history. Yet the video claims the Chicano Moratorium “sparked a movement in defense of Latinx lives.”Wait... what?In this episode we talk about the Eurocentric roots of "Latinidad," and how "Latinx" identity is a colonialist tool that centers whiteness while erasing those of Indigenous and African descent.Your hosts:Kurly Tlapoyawa is an archaeologist, ethnohistorian, and filmmaker. That delicious, confectionary delight you typically find at a Hungarian street festival.   My special guest today is , Nicole Shaw-Provillion, who is an expertly trained chimney cake maker and she is the founder and owner of Kurly Kurtosh in Nutley, NJ.  Nicole not only makes authentic Hungarian chimney cakes but she also has a very unique story about how she built her chimney cake business here in the US after living in Budapest for four years with her family.  You may notice in this episode that the sound may vary from previous episodes and that is because I fortunate to have recorded this interview on site at Kurly Kurtosh, where I was surrounded by the delicious  smell of chimney cakes during the entire interview. And I often say let's dive in, but I think it would be more fitting to say let's dig in, because by the end of this episode, you will definitely want to visit Nicole and dig into a delicious Chimney Cake that she makes at Kurly Kurtosh, in Nutley,  New Jersey.  Here's how you can find Nicole at Kurly Kurtosh:Kurly Kurtosh" address and phone number:74 E. A couple of years back, Kurly came across a video online about the Chicano Moratorium March of August 29, 1970. She is RCFSI (Feng Shui Institute, UK). She came to Feng Shui when she was in need of healing in her own body having experienced extreme debilitating symptoms throughout her childhood, and having tried orthodox medicine, alternative therapies and many ‘woohoo’ approaches.
