Leonardo Da Vinci started his artistic journey at the age of 14, beginning as a studio boy to Andrea del Verrocchio. Verrocchio taught Leo the ropes in sculpting, painting, casting, leather work, amongst other things, until Da Vinci stepped in to paint a couple angels in a mostly complete "The Last Baptism". Verrocchio looked at his work, looked at Da Vinci's and legend has it he set down his brush for good at that point, seeing himself surpassed already by Da Vinci's talent. Achieving the status of Master at age 20, Da Vinci would embark upon a lifetime of creating Art, developing machines and mechanical theories, studying and documenting human anatomy, building weapons and more. The very definition of a Renaissance Man in every way, join us as we go deep into Da Vinci. Support the show

Feast of the Baptism of the Lord - “You are My Beloved Son”

Read OnlineIt happened in those days that Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized in the Jordan by John. On coming up out of the water he saw the heavens being torn open and the Spirit, like a dove, descending upon him. And a voice came from the heavens, “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.”  Mark 1:9–11The Feast of the Baptism of the Lord concludes for us the Christmas Season and transitions us into the beginning of Ordinary Time. From a Scriptural point of view, this event in Jesus' life is also a transitional moment from His hidden life in Nazareth to the beginning of His public ministry. As we commemorate this glorious event, it's important to ponder a simple question: Why was Jesus baptized? Recall that John's baptism was one of repentance, an act by which he invited his followers to turn from sin and to turn to God. But Jesus was sinless, so what was the reason for His Baptism?First of all, we see in the quoted passage above that Jesus' true identity was made manifest through His humble act of baptism. “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased,” spoke the voice of the Father in Heaven. Furthermore, we are told that the Spirit descended upon Him in the form of a dove. Thus, Jesus' baptism is in part a public declaration of Who He is. He is the Son of God, a divine Person Who is one with the Father and the Holy Spirit. This public testimony is an “epiphany,” a manifestation of His true identity for all to see as He prepares to begin His public ministry.Second, by His baptism, Jesus' incredible humility is made manifest. He is the Second Person of the Most Holy Trinity, but He allows Himself to become identified with sinners. By sharing in an act that was focused upon repentance, Jesus speaks volumes through His action of baptism. He came to unite Himself with us sinners, to enter our sin and to enter into our death. By entering the water, He symbolically enters into death itself, which is the result of our sin, and rises triumphantly, allowing us to also rise with Him to new life. For this reason, Jesus' baptism was a way of Him “baptizing” the waters, so to speak, so that water itself, from that moment onward, would be endowed with His divine presence and could be communicated to all who are baptized after Him. Therefore, sinful humanity is now able to meet divinity through baptism.Lastly, when we share in this new baptism, through water that has now been sanctified by our divine Lord, we see in Jesus' baptism a revelation of who we become in Him. Just as the Father spoke and declared Him as His Son, and just as the Holy Spirit descended upon Him, so also in our baptism we become the adopted children of the Father and are filled with the Holy Spirit. Thus, Jesus' baptism gives clarity as to whom we become in Christian baptism. Lord, I thank You for Your humble act of baptism by which You opened the Heavens to all who are sinners. May I open my heart to the unfathomable grace of my own baptism each and every day and more fully live with You as a child of the Father, filled with the Holy Spirit.  Jesus, I trust in You.  Source of content: catholic-daily-reflections.comCopyright © 2024 My Catholic Life! Read OnlineJohn testified further, saying, “I saw the Spirit come down like a dove from the sky and remain upon him. I did not know him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water told me, ‘On whomever you see the Spirit come down and remain, he is the one who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.' Now I have seen and testified that he is the Son of God.” John 1:32–34It's interesting to note that in the Gospel of John, Saint John the Baptist never baptized Jesus, as is depicted in the Gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke. Instead, in the Gospel of John, John the Baptist simply witnessed the descent of the Holy Spirit from a distance, and then spoke the quoted line above. The next day, the Baptist pointed to Jesus as the “Lamb of God,” and two of his own disciples left the Baptist to follow Jesus. Why is there this apparent discrepancy between the Gospel of John and the three Synoptic Gospels? Though it's hard to answer that for certain, one thing that is made uniquely clear in the Gospel of John is that the Baptist was given a unique spiritual knowledge by the Father that Jesus was the “Lamb of God.” In this Gospel, the revelation of Who Jesus was did not take place in a way that everyone present heard and saw. Rather, John's Gospel focuses upon the interior realization that John the Baptist received from the One Who sent him. And the One Who sent him was the Father in Heaven. One spiritual truth worth pondering from the account of the Gospel of John read today is that the conviction and certainty given to the Baptist about Jesus' identity was so certain that he knew Who Jesus was beyond any shadow of a doubt. This personal revelation given to the Baptist changed his life. From that moment on, all he did was point people to Jesus. As you ponder this spiritual revelation about Jesus that the Baptist received from the Father in Heaven, consider for yourself what would be more convincing. Would it be more convincing to hear an audible voice from Heaven declare Who Jesus was? Or to receive this same knowledge through an interior and spiritual communication from the Father? If you believe that the former, the external and audible voice, would be more convincing, then you might want to pause and think again. The truth is that God's clearest and most certain form of communication to us is one that is internal. And even if there were an audible voice spoken from Heaven, as depicted in the Synoptic Gospels, that Voice would have to also be interiorly confirmed by faith in the hearts of the hearers so as to convince them on the deepest level. Reflect, today, upon the spiritual truth that God the Father wants to speak to you in the depths of your own soul so as to draw you into a certainty about Himself and all that He has spoken as true. Do you hear God speak? Have you allowed yourself to be convinced by His Voice? Listen to Him today and allow all that He speaks to you to become the source and goal of all that you say and do in life. Father in Heaven, You have revealed to me Who You are and Your plan for my life in many ways. And though You are always speaking to me, I acknowledge that I do not always listen. Please open my soul to You more fully so that I may come to faith and be certain of Your love and Your perfect will in my life. Jesus, I trust in You.Source of content: catholic-daily-reflections.comCopyright © 2024 My Catholic Life! Inc. All rights reserved. Exploring the Genius: A Review of ‘Leonardo Da Vinci' by Walter IsaacsonChapter 1:Summary of Book Leonardo Da VinciWalter Isaacson's biography "Leonardo Da Vinci" delves into the life of one of history's greatest creative geniuses. Published in 2017, the book meticulously explores Leonardo's life through his notebooks, paintings, and inventions, illuminating his insatiable curiosity and inventive imagination.Leonardo Da Vinci, born in 1452 in Vinci, Italy, had a wide range of interests that spanned various fields, including art, science, engineering, anatomy, and nature. Isaacson uses da Vinci's famous notebooks, which contain over 7,200 pages of drawings and notes, to provide readers with insights into the mind of the genius. Clearly, da Vinci pursued knowledge for its own sake, and his lack of formal education did not hinder his relentless quest for understanding. The biography also discusses many of Leonardo's masterpieces, like "The Last Supper" and the "Mona Lisa," analyzing the innovative techniques used and the human emotions captured that continue to fascinate people to this day. Isaacson highlights Leonardo's obsessive attention to detail, his transformative thoughts on human anatomy, which he discovered through dissection, and his futuristic inventions, some of which were not realized during his lifetime.Isaacson also examines the personal aspects of da Vinci's life, including his vegetarianism, left-handedness, and probable homosexuality, suggesting how his nature influenced his art and scientific studies. Despite his numerous accomplishments, Leonardo is portrayed as human, experiencing failures, like his unfinished projects and his notorious procrastination. The biography doesn't just glorify da Vinci's successes but also illustrates how his tendency to question received knowledge, untangle complex phenomena, and navigate unknown intellectual territories made him a true "Renaissance man" who remains relevant in today's creative and scientific realms.Isaacson's narrative is engaging and educational, shedding light not only on Leonardo's genius but also on how he can serve as an exemplar of blended art and science for future generations.Chapter 2:The Theme of Book Leonardo Da VinciWalter Isaacson's biography "Leonardo Da Vinci" meticulously chronicles the life of the Italian polymath, providing insights into his extraordinary talents as an artist, inventor, scientist, and thinker. The book, which draws on thousands of pages from Leonardo's notebooks and extensive research by Isaacson, not only presents key events in da Vinci's life but also explores his character and thought processes, revealing how his mind worked and what we can learn from him. Here are some key points regarding the plot, character development, and themes in the book: Key Plot Points1. Early Life and Apprenticeship: The book begins with Leonardo's birth in 1452 in Vinci, an illegitimate child in a small town near Florence. His early talent in the arts leads to an apprenticeship under the renowned artist Verrocchio in Florence.2. Flourishing in Milan: Leonardo moves to Milan to work for Ludovico Sforza, where he delves into scientific studies, theatre, and painting, producing masterpieces like The Last Supper.3. Scientific Inquiry and Journals: Throughout his life, Leonardo filled numerous notebooks with sketches, scientific diagrams, and his thoughts on topics from anatomy to flight.4. Stints in Rome and France: The biography also covers his time in Rome under the patronage of Giuliano de' Medici and his final years in France, invited by King Francis I.5. Final Years and Death: Leonardo's life concludes in 1519 in Amboise, France, where he continued to work until his death. A reading from the holy Gospel according to John John the Baptist saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world. He is the one of whom I said, ‘A man is coming after me who ranks ahead of me because he existed before me.'” In today's Gospel reading, John the Baptist sees Jesus after he had baptized him. At the moment he baptized him, John recognized Jesus' divinity in what God had revealed to him: “On whomever you see the Spirit come down and remain, he is the one who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.” John gives testimony to Jesus' divinity by saying of him: “A man is coming after me who ranks ahead of me because he existed before me.” John's recognition that Jesus existed before him must have come at the moment the Holy Spirit descended on Jesus during his baptism. John continues to point to Jesus today as one of many voices of the communion of saints who direct our gaze to Jesus, the Son of God. For John to say that Jesus existed before him is to be aware of God's eternal existence that permeates every moment of this life until the next, where we give glory to God in unending praise. God, help me understand what John the Baptist recognized in your Son. The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world, the child born of the Virgin Mary, the suffering servant who died and rose to new life, the Lamb of God present in the Eucharist—He is the one who brings us to eternal life through baptism of the Holy Spirit. Lord, help me see today that you are eternally present in its succession of moments. Give me the grace to receive your presence and the knowledge to make within myself a temple of the Holy Spirit. As Servant of God, Archbishop Martínez said: “As divine love is eternal and its action constant, it is our part to have our heart always open to love, ready to receive the unspeakable gift.” Keep my heart open, Lord! Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. A reading from the holy Gospel according to Mark It happened in those days that Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized in the Jordan by John. On coming up out of the water he saw the heavens being torn open and the Spirit, like a dove, descending upon him. And a voice came from the heavens, “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.” In yesterday's reading from John, Jesus tells Nathanael: “you will see the sky opened and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.” Today, we see Jesus going to John the Baptist for baptism in the waters of the Jordan. As Jesus rises up out of the water, the heavens open and the Spirit descends upon him. The voice of God the Father speaks from the heavens: “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.” What am I a witness to day by day that is not as magnificent as the heavens opening but is still a sign of God's love? Lord, help me understand that in your Son there is no untruth. What he says, comes to be; just as he said to Nathanael, so it becomes reality. The baptism by John with water precedes the baptism for all by the Holy Spirit. Of Jesus, John says: “I am not worthy to stoop and loosen the thongs of his sandals.” With such humility as John's, what truths about your nature would I hear you reveal to me? Where are the opportunities throughout each day to recognize your divine authority, presence, and unconditional love? John describes this loving presence in the gift of your Son: “God gave us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. Whoever possesses the Son has life; whoever does not possess the Son of God does not have life.” Let me rest, here, Lord in your presence. In your Son, there is the baptism by the Holy Spirit; that is, dying and rising to new life through his resurrection. Grant me the grace, Lord, to recognize and hold in my heart today what Nathanael saw in Jesus: “You are the Son of God; you are the King of Israel.” Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/locus-mariologicus/message

Ben Luke talks to Allison Katz about her influences in the realms of literature, music and, of course, art, and the cultural experiences that have shaped her life and work. Born in Montreal in 1980, Katz is an artist who probes the complexities of painting, drawing on diverse imagery, a range of painterly techniques and distinctive forms of display to create environments that are by turns delightful and perplexing, but always enthralling. The longer you spend in the company of Katz's work, the more the associations, the playful connections, and the fundamental rigour of her thinking emerge. In this conversation, she discusses the influence of being a life model at a young age, and making numerous “portraits” of a painting of a woman by Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot. She reflects on paintings by Edgar Degas and Andrea del Verrocchio, among others, discusses how the poet and translator Richard Howard helped her read poetry and see that frivolity could be serious, and expresses wonder at British radio programmes, including sporting commentary. And she answers the questions we ask all our guests, including the ultimate one: what is art for?Allison Katz: Artery, Camden Art Centre, London, until 13 March. That exhibition originated in a slightly different form at Nottingham Contemporary, and a catalogue accompanying the two versions of the show will be published in early 2023. An exhibition of Katz's posters is at Canada House, London, until 26 March. Her paintings are in The Milk of Dreams, the central exhibition at the Venice Biennale, 23 April-27 November. She has a solo exhibition at Luhring Augustine, New York, in September. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

“No, hijo mío, haz tu mejor esfuerzo.

Leonardo di ser Piero da 14/15 April 1452 – 2 May 1519), known as Leonardo da Vinci was an Italian polymath of the Renaissance whose areas of interest included invention, drawing, painting, sculpture, architecture, science, music, mathematics, engineering, literature, anatomy, geology, astronomy, botany, paleontology, and cartography. He has been variously called the father of palaeontology, ichnology, and architecture, and is widely considered one of the greatest painters of all time (despite perhaps only 15 of his paintings having survived). Born out of wedlock to a notary, Piero da Vinci, and a peasant woman, Caterina, in Vinci, in the region of Florence, Italy, Leonardo was educated in the studio of the renowned Italian painter Andrea del Verrocchio. Much of his earlier working life was spent in the service of Ludovico il Moro in Milan, and he later worked in Rome, Bologna and Venice. He spent his last three years in France, where he died in 1519. Leonardo is renowned primarily as a painter. The Mona Lisa is the most famous of his works and the most popular portrait ever made. The Last Supper is the most reproduced religious painting of all time and his Vitruvian Man drawing is regarded as a cultural icon as well. Salvator Mundi was sold for a world record $450.3 million at a Christie's auction in New York, 15 November 2017, the highest price ever paid for a work of art. Leonardo's paintings and preparatory drawings—together with his notebooks, which contain sketches, scientific diagrams, and his thoughts on the nature of painting—compose a contribution to later generations of artists rivalled only by that of his contemporary Michelangelo. Although he had no formal academic training, many historians and scholars regard Leonardo as the prime exemplar of the "Universal Genius" or "Renaissance Man", an individual of "unquenchable curiosity" and "feverishly inventive imagination." He is widely considered one of the most diversely talented individuals ever to have lived. According to art historian Helen Gardner, the scope and depth of his interests were without precedent in recorded history, and "his mind and personality seem to us superhuman, while the man himself mysterious and remote." Scholars interpret his view of the world as being based in logic, though the empirical methods he used were unorthodox for his time. Leonardo is revered for his technological ingenuity. He conceptualized flying machines, a type of armoured fighting vehicle, concentrated solar power, an adding machine, and the double hull. Relatively few of his designs were constructed or even feasible during his lifetime, as the modern scientific approaches to metallurgy and engineering were only in their infancy during the Renaissance. Some of his smaller inventions, however, entered the world of manufacturing unheralded, such as an automated bobbin winder and a machine for testing the tensile strength of wire. He is also sometimes credited with the inventions of the parachute, helicopter, and tank. He made substantial discoveries in anatomy, civil engineering, geology, optics, and hydrodynamics, but he did not publish his findings and they had little to no direct influence on subsequent science.

Buon ascolto. Continue reading

When you look at some paintings they might look very faded or cracked. Perhaps the colours seem wrong. Take a look at Tobias and The Angel by Andrea del Verrocchio, because there definitely seems to be something amiss! The painting is based on a famous old tale. An old blind man sends his son Tobias and his dog on an errand. Tobias meets a stranger on the way who helps him out when he gets attacked by a fish – and even helps him find a wife. And if that wasn't enough, on his way home the stranger helps Tobias cure his father's blindness. But how is this all possible? Well, the stranger is really the angel Raphael!
