CUPRA LEON EHYBRID 2020 REVIEW "ike the old Golf GTE (and indeed the new one) the Cupra eHybrid uses a 1.4-litre TSI petrol engine paired with an electric motor. The former makes 148bhp and 184lb ft of torque, the latter 113bhp. The other relevant numbers are six (the number of ratios in the dual-clutch transmission), 12.8 (the capacity, in kilowatt hours, of the lithium-ion battery) and 32 (approximate grams per kilometer of CO2, with UK figures yet to be confirmed). Here are two more: 6.7sec to 62mph, and 140mph flat out." writes evo.co.uk: "Cupra quotes 32 miles of all-electric range – a real-world 20-25 miles is more likely. The pseudo five-cylinder growl in Sport and Cupra modes isn’t too bad and ramps up the drama, and outright pace is brisk enough, but the electric and petrol elements always seem to be fighting each other. The electric motor doesn’t quite have the power on its own for that satisfying EV-only thrust of a full-electric car, but rousing the engine takes several beats longer than you’d hope too." https://www.evo.co.uk/cupra/203183/cupra-leon-ehybrid-2020-review-are-hybrids-and-hot-hatchbacks-still-mutually-exclusive MITSUBISHI ECLIPSE CROSS PHEV AVAILABLE IN 2021 "Mitsubishi has announced the redesigned Eclipse Cross, which will be offered in select markets in Asia, Europe and Australia for the first time as a plug-in hybrid with a modified version of the drive system from the Outlander PHEV." according to electrive: "Sales of the new model are scheduled to start in early 2021 in select markets, including Japan, Australia, New Zealand and Germany. At this point, there are no plans to bring the hybrid version of the vehicle to market in the USA. Mitsubishi does not provide any performance data, but since the Eclipse Cross PHEV basically takes over the drive system from the Outlander PHEV – albeit with modifications to match its own chassis – we at least indicate the performance of the new part-time electric motor." https://www.electrive.com/2020/10/15/mitsubishi-eclipse-cross-phev-available-in-2021/ FIAT CHRYSLER WILL INVEST UP TO $1.5 BILLION TO BUILD EVS IN WINDSOR "Fiat Chrysler Automobiles will invest between $1.35 billion and $1.5 billion in its Windsor assembly plant in Canada to build electric vehicles as part of a tentative deal with Canadian autoworkers, Unifor National President Jerry Dias said on Thursday." reports Autoblog: "The auto union said FCA would invest in a state-of-the-art vehicle platform that will enable the assembly of plug-in hybrid and battery electric vehicles, with at least one new model in 2025. The announcement comes less than a month after Unifor said Ford would invest $1.46 billion in its Oakville and Windsor plants." https://www.autoblog.com/2020/10/15/fiat-chrysler-canada-electric-vehicle-deal-unifor/ NIO NARROWS GAP WITH TESLA " Nio, viewed as a bellwether of the Chinese electric-vehicle industry, narrowed the gap with US carmaker Tesla, mainland China’s highest selling electric-car marque, over the last three months." according to the South China MOrning Post: "The company, started by William Li Bin in 2014, delivered 3,226 of its ES6 sport-utility vehicles (SUVs) in September, a year-on-year increase of 87 per cent, according to the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA). In August, its sales rose 58 per cent, with the company selling 2,840 ES6s. Tesla, on the other hand, led the sector by quite a distance last month, by a margin of 8,103, having delivered 11,329 of the Model 3 cars built at its Shanghai-based Gigafactory 3. In June, however, the gap between Tesla and Nio was wider" https://www.scmp.com/business/companies/article/3105773/chinese-electric-car-bellwether-marque-nio-narrows-gap-tesla EVS TO RETURN POWER TO GRID WITH ABB INTELLIGENT CHARGING As part of a contract with France’s DREEV, a joint venture between Électricité de France (EDF) and Nuvve, which specializes in intelligent charging for EVs, ABB will supply its brand-new 11 kW bi-directional charging technology, specially designed for V2G. ABB’s solution integrated with DREEV software technology will enable EV drivers to export surplus power back to the grid. With potential to generate up to 20€/EV/month, V2G thereby reduces the total cost of ownership and further boosts the adoption of EVs. Bi-directional chargers also help smooth the flow of uneven generation of electricity from renewable sources such as solar and wind. Under the partnership, ABB will supply V2G bi-directional kiosks in France, followed by installations in the United Kingdom, Italy, Belgium and Germany. The light and compact 11 kW charger delivers a quick and flexible charge and is fully compatible with current and future EVs. It meets the most stringent grid compliance requirements and is designed to be the global benchmark for V2G charging.
Show #771 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Thursday 7th May 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. SKODA ENYAQ IV TEASED AS THE COMPANY'S MOST POWERFUL CAR EVER “While the pint-sized Citigo iV will go down in history as Skoda’s first EV, the Enyaq iV will actually be the first model to be developed right from the start as an electric vehicle. It will ride on the Volkswagen Group’s MEB platform and take the shape as Skoda’s variant of the VW ID.4. The Czech automaker is now kicking off the teaser campaign by sharing images of camouflaged prototypes depicting the zero-emissions SUV.” Reports Motor1: “The Enyaq will be available with a choice between three battery sizes, kicking off with the 55-kWh pack offering 340 kilometers (211 miles) of range per the WLTP cycle. This base version is rear-wheel drive and comes with a rear-mounted electric motor developing 146 horsepower (109 kW). Step up to the midrange model and you’ll get a larger 62-kWh battery with enough juice for 390 kilometers (242 miles), feeding a rear electric motor producing 177 hp (132 kW). If you want the longest range possible, the rear-wheel-drive variant with the 82-kWh battery is the one to get as it offers 311 miles (500 kilometers) between charges while producing 201 hp (150 kW) from its rear-mounted electric motor. Skoda has also engineered the Enyaq to accommodate an all-wheel-drive layout with dual electric motors, one in the front and one at the back, with either 261 hp (195 kW) or a punchy 302 hp (225 kW). The latter is effectively the company’s most powerful production car ever and is suitably going to be badged as an “RS” model. It will do the 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) sprint in a respectable 6.2 seconds before topping out at 112 mph (180 km/h).” https://www.motor1.com/news/420380/2021-skoda-enyaq-iv-teaser/ VOLKSWAGEN DESIGN BOSS: 'WRONG' NOT TO DEVELOP DEDICATED EVS Volkswagen design chief Klaus Bischoff believes the freedom offered by electric technology means it would have been “the wrong decision” to develop vehicles with multiple powertrains rather than bespoke EVs such as the firm’s forthcoming ID 3.” According to Autocar: “The Volkswagen Group has developed the MEB platform as a dedicated electric architecture, which will be used for a range of ID-branded electric Volkswagens that will sit alongside its existing combustion-engined models. Sibling firms Audi, Seat and Skoda will also offer dedicated EVs built on the MEB platform.” Klaus Bischoff : “The new architecture that electric vehicles offer gives designers the chance to come up with an entirely new design approach. We’re aiming for develop something that gives customers big advantages: a small footprint, big interior and fully digital architecture. To keep [an electric car] in the traditional space would have been the wrong decision. There is more freedom [with a bespoke EV] because the car’s architecture volume and proportions are different. With the internal combustion engine out of the game, you can really move the proportions and bodystyles and you have a lot more flexibility, particularly in terms of interior design." https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/new-cars/volkswagen-design-boss-wrong-not-develop-dedicated-evs FIAT BOSS REVEALS THE THINKING BEHIND THE NEW ELECTRIC FIAT 500 "Olivier François, Fiat’s brand president, is bullish about the new arrival, not least because it has only been possible through significant development. Early on, Fiat realised that just adapting an existing car to be pure-electric wouldn’t work; the 500’s trademark focus on style and usability can accommodate electrification, as in the recently launched Hybrid edition, but not the extra battery capacity needed for an EV. And as a result, the new 500 really is new, from the ground up." writes Auto Express. Olivier François: "This is not a Plan B. It is not a current platform that we’ve tweaked to accommodate some batteries. It’s all-new. And this little car, once again, is totally relevant. This is our urban Tesla. The thing we know is that we have a successful nameplate, It is a leader in Europe; people love it. What we don’t really know, what we have no visibility on, is future demand for electric vehicles. But we need to be ready. We know that demand for sure will explode, because of the regulations in city centres." https://www.autoexpress.co.uk/fiat/500/352208/boss-reveals-thinking-behind-new-electric-fiat-500 NISSAN EUROPE ADDS VOLTIA ELECTRIC VAN TO ITS RANGE "The Nissan e-NV200 XL Voltia is a conversion from Voltia. The specialists from Slovakia have converted an e-NV200 into a high roof transporter for this purpose. The body and loading area have been lengthened slightly towards the rear, while the roof behind the driver’s cab has been made considerably higher. This means that the XL version of the e-NV200 with eight cubic metres has a loading space twice as large as the basic model." reports electrive: "Voltia had already launched the conversion with the original 24 kWh version of the e-NV200, but the current models have the newer 40 kWh battery. According to Voltia, the vehicle has been optimised primarily for delivery on the last mile. So far the Slovakians have distributed the model on their own and sold it to the French parcel service Chronopost and the British logistics company Gnewt, for example." https://www.electrive.com/2020/05/07/nissan-adds-voltia-electric-delivery-van-to-its-range/ MUSK SAYS TESLA ROADSTER IS DELAYED UNTIL AFTER CYBERTRUCK "Tesla Chief Executive Elon Musk said in a podcast interview released on Thursday that the company's planned Roadster sports car would take a backseat to the development of other vehicle models." according to Autoblog: "When Rogan asked when he could buy a Roadster, Musk responded he could not provide a date, but said other initiatives, including a ramp-up in production of sport utility vehicle Model Y and the construction of a vehicle factory in Berlin, were priorities. "Roadster is kind of like dessert," Musk said. "We gotta get the meat and potatoes and greens and stuff." Musk also said Tesla should produce the Cybertruck, a futuristic-looking light commercial vehicle, before working on the Roadster. Tesla announced the Roadster, a battery-powered four-seater, at the end of 2017 and at the time said the car would be faster than any street-legal production car. While that doesn’t look good for the industry, it was much more resilient than the large neighboring markets of France and the UK. Market share of different powertrains was largely unchanged over recent months, with plug-in electric vehicles at 8.5% of passenger sales. Tesla was the only auto brand with increased sales year on year, up 10.4%." says Dr Max Holland for CleanTechnica. And whilst we don't have April data for models we do now have MArch model data, MOdel 3 way out front with 2034, then e-Golf 1524, ZOE 945 and e-tron 721. https://cleantechnica.com/2020/05/06/german-ev-market-share-at-8-5-in-april-overall-autos-down-61-yoy/ WORLD’S BIGGEST SOLAR PLANT TO DELIVER POWER AT RECORD-LOW 1.35¢ PER KILOWATT-HOUR "The two-gigawatt Al Dhafra project in Abu Dhabi, the world’s biggest single-site solar installation, is expected to deliver electricity at a record-low US1.35¢ per kilowatt-hour when it goes into service in 2022." reports energycentral.com: "The bid to the Abu Dhabi Power Corporation came from a consortium consisting of Électricité de France (EDF) and the projects division of Chinese manufacturer Jinko Solar, Greentech Media reports. It's fitting that in Paris, the home of the landmark 2015 Climate Agreement, sports contribution to addressing the evolving climate crisis was one of the standout discussions during the inaugural Global Sports Week.More than that, it was a chance to discover how major sporting institutions like the International Olympic Committee and a major events like the Paris 2024 Olympic Games could work with commercial or strategic partners to find solutions to the environmental challenges we are all facing. As the senior sustainability manager for the IOC, Julie Duffus is seeing first hand how climate change is severely impacting the sports associated with the Games, and how international sports federations and National Olympic Committees are adapting to meet the challenges.Nicoletta Piccolrovazzi, the global technology and sustainability director for Dow Olympic & Sport Solutions, has been working with the IOC on its carbon mitigation programme and on the implementation of sustainable technologies at the Games.During this podcast, Duffus and Piccolrovazzi discuss the growing partnership between the IOC and Dow, what they have achieved together thus far, and how they plan to face future challenges. As a Premium Partner of the Paris 2024 Olympics – and the largest energy company in France – EDF will have a big part to play if the Games is to fulfill its ambitious aim of halving the carbon emissions generated by previous modern Summer Olympics, and achieve climate neutrality. The company's chief sustainability officer, Carine de Boissezon, explains EDF's acceleration towards renewable energy, and demonstrates an extensive sports partnership portfolio, in which it is helping sports like kayaking, swimming and football transition away from fossil fuels.
Is the EU executing the decisive gear-shift that is needed to not only meet its own ambitious climate targets and agree on its vision for climate neutrality by 2050, but to successfully lead the way globally? Experts gathered at the Friends of Europe debate ‘Shifting gears: achieving climate neutrality by 2050’ – held in Brussels on 19 February – to assess where Europe is at, what it needs to do, where it’s going and whether it will arrive on time. Moderator and Director of Insights at Friends of Europe, Dharmendra Kanani said that with a new Commission in place and its ambitions stated via the European Green Deal, the imminent unveiling of the new European Climate Law, the assessment of member states’ National Energy and Climate Plans, and the COP26 coming up in Glasgow in November, it’s an interesting time for the climate agenda that has a “last chance saloon” feeling about it. “Everyone is really thinking of Glasgow as the tipping point that we should look forward to – but should it be, can it be, given all the different drivers that are at play, not least politics?” he said, adding that the constant re-negotiation of targets was delaying action. Participants heard perspectives from the International Energy Agency, the private sector’s Electricité de France (EDF), the European Commission Directorate-General for Energy, and Climate Action Network Europe. There was agreement that more needed to be done to create the conditions for consumers to more easily transition to renewable energy sources, and that Europe – which accounts for 9% of global CO2 emissions – must use its ambition to take an assertive leading role in getting other countries on board with tackling the climate emergency. TESLA MODEL S REFRESH WITH MINIMALIST INTERIOR "CNBC reports the Model S refresh will be modeled after the Model 3 in many ways, with a new minimalist interior like the one that received a lot of attention on the smaller car, premium seats from the Long Range and Performance Model 3, and the new drive units from the Model 3, including different motors, inverter and gearbox." writes Jalopnik today: "CNBC also reports the car will get a battery capable of 400 miles of range, which would be an increase over the current max EPA estimated range of 370 miles for the Long Range S, and the updated model is “aiming” for a production start in September of this year." https://jalopnik.com/tesla-model-s-refresh-with-minimalist-interior-and-mode-1835094478 FERRARI TO ADAPT SF90 STRADALE’S HYBRID TECH FOR FUTURE MODELS "There’s a new Ferrari and it’s a hybrid. That shouldn't come as a surprise these days after the success and warm reception of the LaFerrari, the brand’s first-ever electrified production vehicle. The new SF90 Stradale is now effectively the most-powerful road-going Ferrari in history with its 986 horsepower (735 kilowatts) coming from a plug-in hybrid powertrain. This mill will be adapted for use in more future models of Ferrari as the brand is exploring new possibilities on the market." according to Anthony Karr for Motor1.com: "The SF90 Stradale’s propulsion system consists of a 4.0-liter V8 producing 769 hp (573 kW) and 590 pound-feet (800 Newton-meters) of torque, which is supported by three lithium-ion powered electric motors. There’s one located on the rear axle, and two more up front for an additional 217 hp (162 kW). Power reaches all four wheels through an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission." https://www.motor1.com/news/352217/ferrari-adopt-hybrid-powertrain-models/ And Jeff Perez who also writes for Motor1 said: "But for drivers feeling especially efficient off the track, the SF90 offers a pure electric driving mode. With a range of 16 miles (25 kilometers), a maximum electric speed of 84 mph (135 kmh), and plug-in charging capability, the SF90 is perfectly content puttering around Maranello in complete silence as it is tearing up the circuit with its engine screeching toward redline." https://www.motor1.com/news/352073/ferrari-sf90-stradale-details-unveiled/ HYUNDAI INTRODUCES ELECTRIC DOUBLE-DECKER BUS Hyundai Motor unveiled an electric double-decker bus which is a first of its kind for Hyundai, and is part of the company’s effort to help reduce traffic congestion and air pollution. The all-new electric double-decker bus is shown at the ‘Land, Infrastructure and Transport To develop the company’s first electric double-decker bus, Hyundai worked for 18 months on a project supported by the Korean Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport, which began in 2017. As part of the company’s effort to increase efficiency and to reduce vehicle emissions, Hyundai equipped the all-new electric bus with a 384 kWh water-cooled high-efficiency polymer battery, with a maximum 300 km driving range on a single charge. A full charge can be completed in 72 minutes.
