In this episode, Hawk discusses El Salvador, its current President Nayib Bukele, and the controversial CECOT prison. Hawk provides historical context about El Salvador from pre-colonial times through its civil war, explaining how gangs like MS-13 and Barrio 18 (which originated in Los Angeles) created severe violence in El Salvador until Bukele's crackdown beginning in 2022. The video details how El Salvador became the murder capital of the world before Bukele implemented a state of exception that suspended constitutional rights.Hawk extensively describes the CECOT terrorism confinement center, a massive prison built in just six months that now holds over 14,500 inmates in inhumane conditions. The prison features 30-foot walls, 24-hour artificial lighting, no windows, and cells where up to 160 prisoners share two toilets and two water buckets. Hawk explains that President Bukele claims no prisoner has ever been released from CECOT except one deportee, Kilmar Abrego Garcia, who was recently moved to another facility after a U.S. Senator's intervention. The episode also covers the recent arrangement between the Trump administration and El Salvador where the U.S. has deported alleged gang members to CECOT, including many with no criminal record. Hawk notes that Trump has expressed desire to send U.S. citizens to this prison despite legal experts saying this would be impossible under U.S. law. The video concludes with observations about El Salvador's improved safety under Bukele's authoritarian approach and the complex trade-offs between security and human rights. Since last Friday, nightly attacks against penintentiary gates, parking lots, even the homes of prison guards. A hitherto unknown group has claimed responsibility over the social medium Telegram but it's early days for investigators. We'll ask whodunnit… … and the context… with the right-wing interior and justice ministers both talking up strongarm tactics to crack down on increasingly violent and emboldened drug gangs…… gangs who last year shocked France with the deadly ambush on a prison convoy that enabled the getaway of the since recaptured kingpin known as The Fly.So what to make of plans for two French super prisons for narcos, calls for stiffer sentences for small-time pushers… even one politician's call for a US-style Guantanamo in France's North American dependencies of Saint-Pierre and Miquelon? Remember France has some of the most overcrowded prisons in Europe.Produced by François Picard, Rebecca Gnignati, Juliette Laffont, Ilayda Habip, Alessandro Xenos.

In this gripping episode of The Stimpack Podcast, Jeff Frazier sits down with Dr. Vanda Felbab-Brown, a top expert in insurgency and organized crime from the Brookings Institution, to break down the current crisis in Haiti. Together, they explore how armed gangs like Viva Ensemble have outmaneuvered the Haitian government and the internationally funded MSSM force—and why so many conventional strategies, like high-value targeting, are likely to fail. They also discuss how Haiti's elite once puppeteered the gangs, and how that dynamic has now reversed, leading to bold attacks in upscale neighborhoods and fears of a full-scale collapse. This is a must-listen if you want to understand the power struggle, the humanitarian cost, and what could happen next if the world continues to look away.

The ongoing border crisis is fueling a rise in gang violence, particularly from Venezuelan-based gangs like Trende Aragua, which has infiltrated communities in 17 U.S. states. This criminal activity increasingly targets law enforcement, exacerbating public safety concerns in sanctuary cities and beyond. With local and federal officials pointing to the failure of current border policies, critics highlight how weak enforcement emboldens gang members and undermines law and order. Proponents of strict immigration enforcement argue for mass deportations, stricter border security, and enhanced law enforcement funding to curb these threats. As violent crime and sex trafficking surge in affected areas, these issues are now at the forefront of conservative priorities for policy reform, setting the stage for heated political battles over deportation and border security in the coming elections.

Ep. 249 Pete Portal - What Does Success in the Kingdom of God Look Like?

Shifting Culture

Today we have a conversation with Pete Portal, author of the book "How to Be (Un)successful" (or "Stop Trying to Be Successful" for our American listeners). Pete has spent the last 15 years living and working in the township of Mannenberg, South Africa, a community plagued by gang violence, drug addiction, and systemic injustice. What Pete has learned through this experience flies in the face of much of our conventional thinking about success, achievement, and the role of the church. He argues that true success in the kingdom of God is not about what you accomplish, but who you become - a life of faithfulness, vulnerability, and reciprocal relationship, even in the face of deep betrayal and suffering. Pete shares powerful stories of how God is at work, often in the most unexpected places, to raise up the valleys and humble the mountains. He challenges the notion of "culture wars" and the church's tendency to try and "invade and occupy" systems of power, instead calling us to a "seven valleys mandate" - to pervade the forgotten, marginalized spaces of society with the humble, self-giving love of Christ. This is a conversation that will make you rethink everything you thought you knew about success, the role of the church, and how the kingdom of God breaks into our world. It is deeply inspiring and profoundly hopeful. So join us. Pete Portal serves on the Core Leadership Team of Tree of Life, a 24-7 Prayer Community based in Manenberg, Cape Town. He does life with young men coming out of gangsterism and drug addiction and helps these young men find faith, freedom and wholeness. He's on the board of 24-7 Prayer South Africa, and spends much of his time growing relationships and networks across racial and socio-economic divides, as well as speaking at churches and organisations both locally and internationally on matters of faith and social transformation.Pete holds Masters degrees in Theology (Edinburgh) and Theology, Politics and Faith-based Organisations (Kings College London); He's written articles for The Guardian, The Telegraph and The Times.Pete has written two books - No Neutral Ground, and How to be (Un)successful.Pete's Book:Stop Trying to Be SuccessfulPete's Recommendations:Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible ThingThe Critical JourneyJoin Our Patreon for Early Access and More: PatreonConnect with Joshua: jjohnson@allnations.usGo to www.shiftingculturepodcast.com to interact and donate. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum took office on October 1. She inherits a country where organised crime still rules in many regions, a deadly situation that her predecessor, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, failed to curb. More than 30,000 murders are still committed each year, and on average, 29 people disappear every day without a trace. The city of Culiacán in the northwestern state of Sinaloa has recently become the symbol of this violent epidemic. Our correspondents Laurence Cuvillier, Quentin Duval and Ed Augustin report.

In this episode of "Sara Gonzales Unfiltered," Sara exposes the growing chaos under the Biden-Harris administration. The episode kicks off with a shocking report from Chicago, where 32 armed Venezuelan gang members trespassed in a South Side apartment, and highlights similar incidents in Colorado, underscoring the dangerous consequences of open-border policies. Sara then delves into the FBI's suppression of the Nashville Covenant School shooter's diary, questioning the agency's motives and the broader implications for mental health and trans ideology. The show takes a global turn as Sara discusses Brazil's Supreme Court shutting down X (formerly Twitter) and freezing Elon Musk's Starlink assets, a move supported by American figures like Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison, who praised Brazil's actions. Sara draws alarming parallels to censorship efforts in the U.S., warning that such measures could easily be implemented domestically under the wrong administration, especially with figures like Kamala Harris and her allies who have shown a willingness to support such overreach. The episode also critiques Harris' inauthentic campaign tactics, revealing her as an "empty vessel" who panders to different audiences without any real conviction. Sara dives into a revealing segment on Amazon's Alexa, highlighting a stark bias when discussing Kamala Harris versus Donald Trump, raising concerns about the influence of technology on politics. The episode also examines Biden's latest rambling speech, further emphasizing the need for strong, coherent leadership. This episode serves as a stark reminder of what's at stake in the upcoming election, urging viewers to stay informed and engaged. Sara is joined by BlazeTV contributor Matthew Marsden. Every Saturday, we revisit a story from the archives. This originally aired on October 4, 2023. None of the dates, titles, or other references from that time have been changed. Since last year, Haiti's government has been asking the international community for help to restore peace and security. This week, the United Nations Security Council approved sending an international police force led by Kenya to Haiti. Kenya signed on to send 1,000 police officers, with Washington pledging $100 million and logistical support. The Caribbean country has been gripped by spiraling gang violence as well as poverty and food insecurity. And if assistance does succeed in pushing back the gangs, there's still a need to address Haiti's lack of governance and political power vacuum. The last UN mission there lasted from 2004-2017 and faced accusations of rights abuses, sexual violence, and starting a cholera outbreak that killed more than 9,000 people; so, can this foreign intervention avoid repeating those mistakes?
