In this episode, we're diving into one of our favorite daily rituals—coffee. But don't worry, this isn't an anti-coffee episode. I'm not taking your cup away! Instead, I'll walk you through the pros and cons of coffee from a Project Weight Loss lens, and we'll look at whether this beloved brew is helping or hindering your goals. Here's what we'll cover:· The science-backed benefits of coffee (spoiler: antioxidants, brain health, and more)· The not-so-great side effects (think: sleep, stress, and gut issues)· How coffee ties into your Project Weight Loss goals· My personal approach to enjoying coffee mindfully· Tips to cut back (if that's what you decide to do)· A little fun with 10 coffee one-liners Quote of the Week:“People always think that happiness is a faraway thing," thought Francie, "something complicated and hard to get. Yet, what little things can make it up; a place of shelter when it rains - a cup of strong hot coffee when you're blue; … a book to read when you're alone - just to be with someone you love. Those things make happiness.”― Betty Smith, from her book -A Tree Grows in Brooklyn Links Mentioned in This Episode: Episode on the 36 Questions to Build Intimacy SourcesJournal of Nutrition: Vinson JA, et al. You can never outperform your self-image. Your self-image is your view of yourself. Be careful what you say to yourself about yourself. Episode Guide: Beers of the Week: EggNog Shake by Westbrook Brewing (Mt. Pleasant, SC) - Rating: 3.50 Cranberry Crumble by Twenty-Six Acres Brewing Co (Concord, NC) - Rating: 4.00 Facts of the Week: People have been sending Christmas cards since 1843. In 1843, the custom of sending Christmas cards began. At the time, Sir Henry Cole worked as a senior civil servant and had helped set up what would become the Post Office, and he wanted to try and encourage it to be used by ordinary people. The biggest Christmas gift ever was sent in 1865. In 1865, Edouard de Laboulaye proposed a gift from France to the United States to commemorate their commitment to democracy and honor the late president Abraham Lincoln. The Statue of Liberty was officially dedicated in 1886 and has since become an iconic symbol of the United States! Jingle Bells was the first Christmas song in space. In 1965, it became the first song to be played in space. That's right, not just the first Christmas song...but the first song ever! During the Gemini 6A space flight, it was broadcast as a prank from the astronauts to those down below. Santa wasn't always dressed in red. The common myth is that Santa Claus was green before Coca-Cola used their colors, red, for their marketing campaigns in the early 1900s. Whilst this is true to an extent, Santa was shown in red as early as the 1870s by the American cartoonist Thomas Nast. The modern-day depiction of Santa, with his reddened cheeks and large stomach, his little glasses, and a beaming smile, is what we can genuinely thank Coca-Cola for. We can't imagine a Santa that isn't red! Spiders are a traditional Eastern European Christmas decoration. In many Eastern European countries, particularly in Ukraine, finding a spider or a spider's web in your Christmas tree is a symbol of good luck! That's because these countries have the legend of the Christmas spider, which tells that a poor widow lived in a small hut with her children. They found a pinecone in summer and cared for it diligently until it became a pretty tree! This is one of the most important skills to have. One of the top reasons that businesses fail is because they do not have the appropriate people and management skills, even when you have a great idea. At the end of each week, Mike Hosking takes you through the big ticket items and lets you know what he makes of it all. Supermarkets: 8/10 "Big win for them. No upheaval, a bit of tinkering, and a lot of frustrated operators who were hoping for more." The Commerce Commission: 3/10 "Either they need to harden up and produce reports that produce genuine reform. Or they need to admit too many of their projects are time fillers and there is in fact very little to see." National's Proposed Tax Reform: 9/10 "People like to keep their own money. Governments don't know how to spend it better than you. It's a time-honoured fact." National's Call of a Cost of Living Crisis: 7/10 "National have had an excellent week. The government look out of touch. You can't deny reality, and when you do, you look a bit haughty and arrogant." Cabbage Prices: 2/10 "It's $9. No, there is no cost of living crisis, who cant afford $9 for a cabbage?" Rhythm and Vines Cancellation: 3/10 "Delayed, then gone, like so many other events that can't operate in the red light. So when is the red light ending? Who would know, and in that is the crime." Self Isolation: 6/10 "Because 7 days is better than 10. But it still doesn't make sense. If you are not actually sick and you test negative, why are you not working?" Kiwifruit: 8/10 "Orchard land at $2 million a hectare. It's gold, also green and red, but mainly gold." The Warriors: 8/10 "A new season full of prospect and a pre-season win over Melbourne. I know you feel it too, this is our year." - Here's a fact that should remind us to stay humble: There are probably 2 billion Earth-like planets in our galaxy. Researchers say they focused their maths on Earth-size planets within the habitable zones of their stars — that is, orbits where liquid water can exist on the surfaces of those worlds. We live in a solar system that is in one of the arms of the large spiral galaxy called the Milky Way. The sun and its planets (including Earth) lie in this quiet part of the galaxy, about half way out from the center. - A study found that people tend to overestimate their romantic partner's intelligence score. Research consistently shows that people tend to hold inflated opinions of themselves, rating themselves as smarter than they actually are. Some evidence suggested that people are similarly biased towards their romantic partners, but little research has explored whether people overestimate their partner's intelligence. In the recent study, participants overestimated their own intelligence to a significant degree. This positive bias was also shown in how people rated their partner's IQ, and the effect was even larger. Women overestimated their partner's IQ by about 38 points and men overestimated their partner's score by around 36 points. - Stupid Study of the Week: People who don't exercise on a regular basis, and then have episodes of intense exercise or even sex, are more likely to experience a heart attack or die suddenly than those who are more active. - Scientists (University of Granada) have shown that caffeine (the equivalent of a strong coffee) ingested half an hour before aerobic exercise significantly increases the rate of fat-burning. They also found that if the exercise is performed in the afternoon, the effects of the caffeine are more marked than in the morning. WACKY-BUT-TRUE: SMUGGLERS BUSTED WITH GOLD, CASH UNDER TOUPEES _ Two guys were busted at an airport trying to smuggle gold and money under their wigs. The suspects were leaving an airport in India (Chennai International Airport) when they were apprehended by police, who had become suspicious of their bizarre hairstyles. Cops' suspicions were confirmed when they discovered that the duo's wonky weaves concealed black packets of gold paste weighing .15 pounds. The men had glued pouches of both cash and gold to the tops of their heads. … Just two days earlier, three men were arrested at the same airport for attempting to hide gold beneath their hairpieces. WACKY-BUT-TRUE: WOODEN LIONS ARE EASY TO CAPTURE _ Wardens at a safari park in China were sent out with guns to capture what appeared to be an escaped lion, only to find out the lion was a wooden cutout and the whole thing was just a training exercise. WACKY-BUT-TRUE: POSTAL STAFF BUGGED BY CREEPY COCKROACH FIND _ Staff at post office in South Korea called police after discovering that a package was behaving in a mysterious way — as if something inside were alive. After some detective work they managed to confirm the mysterious contents: 300 live cockroaches. The package was meant to be delivered to a man who feeds cockroaches to his pet snakes. WACKY-BUT-TRUE: SENIOR CITIZEN SPEEDER _ Swedish police said a 70-year-old man was spotted driving 105 mph past several police cars. Police said the man, who was pulled over in a 55 mph zone, did not have a valid driver's license as it had been revoked due to poor health. The man told authorities he was speeding because he was trying to get to a recreational vehicle dealership before closing time. WACKY-BUT-TRUE: DOG BARK DOORBELL _ A family in the Netherlands says a city inspector was barking up the wrong tree when he handed them an $97 bill for the local dog tax. The family insists it does not have a dog — only a barking doorbell. It was the second year in a row the family had a run-in with authorities over their doorbell, which plays 15 different barking noises. Fun Facts ✓ There are over 89 million dogs in the U.S. ✓ Every second Americans...

Hello everyone and welcome to episode 42, where Friday the 13th falls on a Wednesday this month. This 13th of November in the year of our Lord, 2019. I hope you’re not superstitious; instead, this is a month to be most thankful. Later this month, at Thanksgiving dinner, like a lot of families, we go around the table and everyone shares what they have been thankful for this year. The expressions of gratitude are usually the same: for family, good health, prayers that have been answered, and maybe one or two events from the past year. It’s always good to re-affirm blessings like these. They’re the good things of life that deserve to be acknowledged. But what about the not-so-good things? Is it possible to be grateful for them? I think there is. I think we can find a measure of gratitude in our relationship with the annoyances and irritations of life that can actually bring us joy. Let me explain. My current ;ist of irritations: Dental bill for Janet’s root canal Our grandfather clock doesn’t strike 2 anymore Crack in our driveway The “A” on my computer keyboard. Where the joy is to be found in these irritations: There is joy in realizing that no one is out to get me at the dental office or the insurance company. That I’m not a victim. Most people are trying. They may be in a dead-end job they don’t like for no other reason than to support their family. I’ve had a job or two like that in my life. So I can relate. If I want to. There is joy in appreciating that I’m not in control nearly as much as I think I am. These annoyances remind me I need Jesus. They remind me to focus on the important stuff. There is joy in being reminded that all these irritations of life are a result of the Fall. That we live in a fallen world, that was never the way God intended our life to be. But it’s not going to be like this forever. There is joy found in knowing God understands what we’re going through, and as it says of Him in Ephesians 1:10, “At the right time God will bring everything together under the authority of Christ - everything in heaven and and on earth.” There is joy in knowing that all the irritations of life will one day cease. When my life ends here on earth, and my new one starts in heaven , there will be no more annoyances, no more mail from the the dental clinic about an overdue bill. Revelation 21 talks about the new heaven and the new earth that awaits us as follower of Jesus. It’s where there will be no more death, or sorrow, or pain. All these things will be gone forever. Here’s what I learned today. More importantly, I’d appreciate reading YOUR takeaways from today’s program in the “Leave a Reply” box at the bottom of the show notes. Or you can send them in an email to me. But for now, here’s what I learned: Don’t let annoyances rob us of the joy of being fully present in the here and now Adjust our expectations. There is something wrong with EVERYTHING. Anticipate and appreciate what heaven will be like, where there will never be any any problems. Where nothing is broken. In the light of eternity, all problems and irritations are temporary. It’s part of having a theology of suffering. We will rarely be thankful for the irritation when it first happens. But give it some time to marinate in our heart, and in time, the gratitude, and even joy, will emerge. Before I close, here’s the he main take-away from today’s episode, our show in a sentence The irritations of life, if we let them, can drive us to gratitude to Jesus for calming our hearts when we put these annoyances of life in proper perspective, knowing that in light of eternity, they are only temporary. Here’s what we can do in response to today’s show A few things come to mind: Stare our pet peeves in the face, with a big smile on our face, and repeat, “this too will pass." Make a list of all the things that bother us, and in prayer, ask the Lord to give us an eternal perspective about them Anticipate things will go wrong. Don’t be surprised. Find the humor. Closing Thank you for listening in today. If you found the program helpful I’d appreciate you writing a brief review in iTunes. This will help search engines get our podcast out to more people. As always, you can find the show notes for the episode by going to johncertalic.com/podcast. Now for Our Relationship Quote of the Week "People who say that small things don't bother them have never slept in a room with a mosquito." --Dennis Rainey That’s all for today. See you next week. Bye for now. Other Resources Episode 41: Thankful for the cheerleaders in my life.

What makes one person persevere through challenges, while another succumbs to them? The character trait of grit is only partially inherent; people can develop the grit they need to flourish in difficulties with the right mindset. In this episode, hosts Kelly Palace and Maria Parker speak with best-selling author about her latest book GETTING GRIT and how we can get grittier. You’ll love to hear great advice from Caroline Adams Miller, who is one of the world’s leading experts on the science behind successful goal setting and the use of "good grit" to achieve hard things. For more than 30 years, she’s been sharing her research-backed, actionable strategies to help people cultivate more grit and dig deeper to clarify and achieve their toughest goals. Caroline breaks down the idea of grit into several types: Good grit: This is the type of grit that is authentic, and that awes or inspires others. Bad grit: Also referred to as "stupid" or "stubborn" grit, this type happens when the individual pursues personal goals at all costs. Selfie grit: The need to tell everyone about the difficult things the individual is accomplishing. Faux grit: People who want the recognition of doing accomplishment without actually doing the hard work. Hear Caroline speak in person at the upcoming event: Creating Your Best Life -- How to Pursue Meaningful Goals and Live with No Regrets on April 26 to 29 at the Kripalu Center for Yoga and Health in Stockton, Massachusetts. Learn more here. Quote of the Week: "People with grit are renowned for setting hard—some would say unrealistic—goals. Because people with grit don’t go for easy, low-hanging fruit and have to work persistently for a long time to see success, their pursuit of tough goals, and often their success in achieving them, is what inspires other people to step out of their comfort zone, too." - Caroline Adams Miller Subscribe to the Champion's Mojo podcast on iTunes, Spotify and Google Play. In this week’s podcast, Garrett and Danielle are back at it again as they have a conversation about the seduction game and the importance of knowing what your partner needs; otherwise, the sexual victim card gets played. Every week married couple Danielle and Garrett J White share insights and perspectives from within their own lives regarding the following topics discussed each month: Week 1: Sex Week 2: Money Week 3: Parenting Week 4: Communication In This Week’s Podcast….SEX Point #1: Seduction and Sex In the conversation of seduction, Danielle shares how seducing Garrett can be as simple as her walking through the room wearing some cute, lace panties or slowly undressing, whereas seeing Garrett confident and in his element is far more seductive and sexy to her than watching him prance around in a thong. Doing your business in private vs doing it with the door wide open proves to be a spicy topic. When playing the game, “Things That Guarantee You Will Not Get Laid,” the friend zone, tampons, hairy ass cheeks, and the naggy bitch mode top the list. QUESTION What tops your couple’s list of Things That Guarantee You Will Not Get Laid? Point #2: Tracking and Lacking Back when their marriage was a shit show, Danielle thought the only reason Garrett was helping out was to get laid, which was actually true. He felt he had earned sex because of all of the things he was doing for her. She noticed the difference in his energy and attitude when they had sex vs when she withheld sex from him. Garrett found himself in an isolation and desperation game while tracking how much sex they weren’t having. As a man who had been successful in breaking the codes in his businesses, Garrett was trying to figure out how to break his wife’s code, hoping his gifts to her would result in a blow job for him. Danielle was pissed because he was tracking, Garrett was pissed because his sex life was lacking. QUESTION In what ways is your relationship similar to their “shit show” years? Point #3: The Leverage Game A man tends to leverage money and power to get sex, whereas a woman will leverage sex to get the power she wants. Garrett felt hurt and angry for being rejected sexually, while Danielle continually had her guard up and felt like she was always walking on eggshells. Garrett’s constant challenge became: When is my wife going to want me? He began strategizing, which backfired and began killing the attraction between them. Danielle was watching from the sidelines and figured he was a ticking time bomb. QUESTION How are you playing the Leverage Game in your marriage? Point #4: Men: Take the Sexual Victim Card Off the Table Although Danielle and Garrett existed in a space better than war, it wasn’t victory – it was a place where he needed to get laid, and she wanted peace in the house. Sex became awkward. When men become more powerful in business, they also become more sexually charged. Being completely consumed with the frustration, anger, fear and doubt around this topic of sex, and constantly being rejected, Garrett became a sexual victim. As a married man 100% committed to his wife, until he could stop the war between he and Danielle, he began neutralizing the playing field by handling his needs himself via a sex tool. QUESTION What space are you existing in as a couple? Point #5: Submit and Surrender While Danielle agreed she was being a bitch about withholding sex, Garrett admits he was being a dick and complete asshole by withholding time and energy from her. He would deliberately set up situations for Danielle to fail so he could feel like he had control. Garrett remembers the day he submitted to the reality that Danielle needed him to show up and give a shit as a husband and as a lover, even if he wasn’t getting laid. He was going to direct all of his energy towards her and not hold her hostage anymore. He felt that by giving her space, he would show her that he wanted her as a person, beyond her body, and that he was ALL IN. QUESTION What are the ways you hold your spouse hostage? What behaviors could you let go of that would be a game changer in your relationship? Communication Challenge: Talk about and demonstrate the ways you love seducing and being seduced. Date Night Topic: Do you use Garrett’s formula of TTF? Or a different formula? Talk about the formulas that work for you in your marriage. Quote of the Week: “People would look at us as this attractive couple and I was like fuck that! I’ve got a g*ddamn frozen ice block barbie in a box goin’ on. I don’t get to touch it – nothing! It’s like a doll that I get to look at. I’m like a dog on a leash that’s held just past where the hamburger is sitting, and I’m not ever getting it. And if I do take a bite, I get beat with a fuckin’ stick.” —Garrett J White “You promote me, you talk about me, you say I’m your Queen, so show me! Come over to my side and show me that what you’re preaching is true. If you believe in me, if you believe in my business, if you believe in my vision, then jump on board with me!” —Danielle White

Quote of the Week “People that feel happy, successful, and fulfilled by their lives and work all have one thing in common: they feel as though they are making progress on something that matters...what I do, as stupid as it sounds, is I don’t focus on balancing everything. I focus on just making sure I make progress on one thing a day. That’s right you heard me, just one thing a day that matters to me. Now, if I can make progress on one thing a day that matters to me, then I can let go and let the rest of my day get hijacked by kids, by my spouse, by phone calls, by emails, by social media, by all kinds of things that come up and tend to hijack your day when you are a busy person.” – Mel Robbins ------ Thank you for tuning in! Donald Trump is in power in America. Doug Ford is headed that way in Ontario. The alt-right seems ascendant everywhere, while liberal democracy is in crisis. Journalists are being demonized as "fake news" at best and "enemies of the people" at worst. Pax Americana faces an assault from within as its leaders openly question and threaten to dismantle the rules-based order that has undergirded global democracy, stability and prosperity since the Second World War. And it looks like a lot of people want it this way. What on earth is going on? Joining Ben on the program is Professor Keith Banting of Queen's University. Dr. Banting is a renowned scholar of political science and policy studies, with a focus on diversity, immigration and multiculturalism. The author or editor of over 20 books, including Inequality and the Fading of Redistributive Politics, Dr. Banting has recently worked to explain the not-wholly-unprecedented rise of populism in today's political discourse.
