Nato Green started hanging out at San Francisco comedy clubs when he was in eighth grade. Nato's parents met when they both still lived in the suburbs of Chicago. They got married in 1968 and moved to San Francisco soon after that. Nato says that they “were in the counter-culture, but bad at it.” What he means by that is they didn't take their subversive lifestyles all the way like many of their peers did. But they were definitely left-leaning folks. They settled in Noe Valley, which was quite a different neighborhood back then. It was much more working-class than it is today. Think: blue-collar Irish- and Italian-American families. They had their first kid, Nato, and five years later, their second, his younger brother. When Nato was in middle school, his parents split up. He went with his dad to live at 22nd Street and Dolores, and then up to Bernal Hill. He split time between there and his mom's house in Noe Valley. Nato is quick to point out that Bernal Heights was also very different back then. There were even unpaved roads on the hill when he was a kid in the Seventies. Today, Nato uses history and some pop-culture references to date his own memories here in San Francisco. He remembers things like the Mosone/Milk murders and ensuing “White Night” riots, to name just one. The Forty-Niners' string of Super Bowl wins in the Eighties are another. Nato admits that he wasn't the best big brother. He lists off some of the SF schools he attended—Rooftop Elementary, MLK Middle School, and Lick-Wilmerding High School, where he went on a scholarship. His dad worked to the SFUSD for 35 years and worked on desegregation, among other things. He also taught in SF public schools. Nato says he was a “sensitive, depressed kid.” He read a lot, especially comic books. He graduated from high school in 1993, when the local music scene was overtaken by thrash/funk. Bands of that genre were plenty. Nato went to those shows, where he was able to, anyway. He wasn't yet 21. The first indie comic book store in The City was on 23rd Street in the Mission—The SF Comic Company, and two doors down was Scott's Comics and Cards. Nato became a Scott's regular. Others who hung out there a lot became his buddies. The SF band Limbomaniacs lived next to Scott's. Nato goes on a sidebar here about how bands in the thrash/funk scene never really blew up, mostly owing to what a uniquely live experience the music was. In 1990, when the Niners won the Super Bowl in a blowout, the Limbomanics played with guitar amps at the windows of their Victorian on 23rd Street, facing out. As Nato tells it, skater kids poured out of that house, and other neighborhood kids flocked to the scene. A mosh pit soon emerged, of course, on the asphalt. Nato goes on another quick sidebar here about all the different neighborhoods and scenes interacting on a regular basis. At least when he grew up, they did. Nato's main modes of transportation in San Francisco were his feet and Muni. The main bus lines were the 24, the 49, and the 67. His high school was on Ocean Avenue, but he mostly hung out in the Mission. One of his good friends lived in Lower Haight and had a car, so Nato would sometimes take Muni over there. That buddy with a car would also swing by and pick up Nato and his friends. They'd often go to the west side of town and hang out in coffeeshops. Nato rattles off several of those shops, also letting us what occupies those spaces today—Farley's (still there), Higher Grounds in Glen Park (still there), Higher Grounds in The Mission (closed), Café Macondo (Gestalt today), Blue Danube (still there), and the Horse Shoe (empty today). There's another sidebar about Jello Biafra. Nato says, “Don't meet your heroes.” As mentioned up top, he started hanging out at comedy clubs in The City when he was in eighth grade. There was a show on KQED called Comedy Tonight that featured local comics. Originally, the show was shot at Wolfgang's (now Cobb's), but it later moved to Great American Music Hall. Alex Bennet was on Live 105 in the morning and Comedy in the Park was drawing 50,000 people to the Polo Fields. There were five seven-nights-a-week clubs in SF, and at least five more around the Bay. People made a living as regional headliners. Around this time, Nato's eighth grade science teacher's roommate was the doorman at Cobb's. Word got around to that guy that a kid was into comedy, and so he started taking him to that club. He saw comedians such as Greg Proops, Dana Gould, Paula Poundstone, Mark Pitta, Johnny Steele, Will Durst, Greg Behrendt, and Margaret Cho. He watched these folks, some of them anyway, become headliners. Check back next week for Part 2 and the conclusion of our episode on Nato Green. We recorded this episode at Nato's home on Bernal Hill in January 2025. Photography by Nate Oliveira

The weather has been beautiful and sunny lately and I have been spending a lot of my time outdoors. Some of my favorite things to do are walk through the local parks and ride my bike on Duck Creek Trail. I love watching the trees grow their leaves back and flowers start to bloom. When I am out, I see some people using the green spaces like I am, but not a lot of people and even less kids. It makes me wonder why more people do not utilize these beautiful spaces. How do we encourage people to go outdoors and enjoy nature?River Action has come up with a way to combat summer couch potatoes with our environmental scavenger hunt, Explore & Seek. Explore & Seek is an expansion on our Ride & Seek scavenger hunt last summer as we want everyone, even individuals without bicycles to be able to participate in the fun. The goal is to walk, hike, run, or bike to find clues to answer the questions you are provided. If you answer all the questions by the end of June, you will be entered into a drawing to win fun prizes! Some of the amazing places you will go to include Devil's Glen Park in Bettendorf, West Lake Park in Davenport, and Sunset Park in Rock Island. Andrew St. James's birth mom was a tour caterer for the Rolling Stones. In this episode, the musician traces his lineage back to his being adopted by a young San Francisco couple. Carol moved to San Francisco in 1971. She worked at the Gap and what used to be Live 105 and KMEL. Nathan was born in Brooklyn to Holocaust survivor parents. After his New York marriage fizzled, he hopped on a motorcycle and rode to San Francisco in 1978. Nathan and some friends opened the original Captain Video stores. The two met when Nathan went to buy radio advertising from Carol. The couple lived in Glen Park when they adopted Andrew, then they all moved to the Sunset District, where Andrew was raised. Andrew shares early memories from both neighborhoods. He sang in the San Francisco Boys Choir for a number of years before getting jaded at a young age. He decided to branch out more on his own, and so he bought an organ. He soon began playing rock music with friends roughly his age—12. Andrew got into Urban High School, which he shares the background and philosophy of for us. Andrew says that by the time he entered high school, in the late-2000s, that philosophy had more or less gone by the wayside. Check back Thursday for Part 2 and the continuation of Andrew's life story. She examines each chakra individually on the physical, psychological, psychic, and spiritual level, as well as through the lens of the solar (masculine) and lunar (feminine) channels. She shows how the connections between the chakras and developmental stages are paralleled in the findings of Western psychology and neuroscience and how our collective expressions of the chakras influence cultural trends in society. Glen Park is a healer, teacher, author, workshop leader and trainer, with over thirty years' experience in the Alexander Technique and Chakra Healing Therapy. She has given talks and run workshops in Europe, USA and Canada, Australia and Japan, working with the general public, and with specialist groups such as actors and drama students, therapists and other body practitioners. The Silk Road was an online marketplace which allowed for the free trade of items which did not cause harm to others, providing anonymity to both buyers and sellers.Known as a darknet marketplace, the Silk Road was the first of its kind and proved hugely popular. Made possible using Tor to protect browsing and Bitcoin to allow for exchange, the Silk Road grew at a rate which any silicon valley VC would have been desperate to inject capital into. But as the Silk Road allowed for the trade of items which the states deem harmful, the site came under the scrutiny of the FBI.Ross went to great lengths to remain anonymous, operating under the name Dread Pirate Roberts and became a main target for a number of law enforcement agencies. In today’s episode of Escrow Out Loud, our San Francisco Real Estate podcast, we give the answer to long-awaited question, what was the neighborhood from round 4 of the Neighborhood Guessing Game? We also play round 6![00:22] Last round’s answer: Nopa, right across the street from the Panhandle.[01:15] Clue 1: This neighborhood is famous for its sundial, which at the time of its dedication in 1913 was the largest in the whole country.[01:48] Clue 2: It has a lot of pride and its own newspaper called, The Sundial.[02:27] Clue 3: The Pacific Coast Jockey Club opened a racetrack there in 1895 and the original racetrack loop is a current road in this neighborhood.[03:20] Clue 4: The neighborhood became one of eight master plan residents parks in San Francisco officially opening in 1913.[04:01] Clue 5: The first person moved into the neighborhood in June of 1912.[04:38] Clue 6: The first non-caucasian, Cecil Poole, moved into the neighborhood in 1957.[05:21] Clue 7: The neighborhood CCNRs said that the original homes had to cost at least $3,500 to construct and only single-family homes were allowed.[06:04] Clue 8: To get to this neighborhood you could take the Municipal Railway K line which runs along Ocean Ave towards West Portal or you could head down toward Glen Park or Balboa Park stations and city college. Junipero Serra Blvd offers easy access to the peninsula.[06:41] Clue 9: A realtor would say this neighborhood is D4 west of Twin Peaks. On the north side of this neighborhood lies Ocean Ave, on the south side Holloway Ave, Junipero Serra Blvd on the west and Ashton Ave on the east.[07:06] Clue 10: There are large pillars with the neighborhood name there and there is a pretty large mall not to far away.As always, tune in next time, when we reveal the answer to this week’s neighborhood!Thank you for listening. Mexico City will decriminalize sex work in move against trafficking Mexico City lawmakers have given the green light to decriminalize sex work in the capital, hoping it will be a first step to a crackdown on sex trafficking that traps thousands of Mexican women and children. Lawmakers in Mexico City’s congress on Friday voted 38-0, with eight abstentions, in favor of a bill to remove a line in the civic culture law which said prostitutes and their clients can be fined or arrested if neighbors complained. Temistocles Villanueva, a local representative with the ruling center-left Morena party, said the new law recognized that people had the right to engage in sex work. Man who raped, beat and robbed a Vancouver sex worker found guilty of all charges A Surrey man has been found guilty of all charges in relation to a vicious sex attack and robbery that occurred in a Vancouver park in September 2017. In a recent Supreme Court of B.C. ruling, Justice Shelley Fitzpatrick found Ezaz Ahmed Razak, 24, guilty of sexual assault causing bodily harm, robbery, unlawful confinement and making threats. Court heard that Razak, his brother-in-law Michael Sharma and friend Baljit Bains were driving along Kingsway in the early hours of Sept. 2, 2017, after a night at a casino. Sharma stopped the vehicle and a sex-trade worker approached. The goal was to arrange a sexual encounter for Razak. The woman agreed to a $60 fee for sex for 30 minutes and then walked with Razak to nearby Glen Park. The woman testified that Razak was unable to finish the sex act within the allotted time, at which point she ended the encounter. Over the next half hour Razak forced the woman to perform more sex acts, robbed her of the $60 he had given her, plus $80 she had made earlier doing a cleaning job, choked her, verbally abused her and threatened her with death.

Our San Francisco Real Estate podcast turns to title insurance and escrow this week, and to try and make a relatively dry topic a bit more interesting, we decide to do what we do every day for our clients - question that answer! But first, Matt looks in the mirror after a bad podcast performance and a quick review of our stats reveals how very popular game shows are.[00:54] With the Jargon Jeopardy episode being one of our most popular episodes, and us not wanting to get a letter from anyone's attorney for using a trademarked term, Matt was inspired to come up with a new name for our most popular game show that's a lot like that one with Alex. Question That Answer seemed like a great description because, as we chat about, it is how we help our clients.[02:35] We also believe it is not only important to get answers, it is also important to understand them. This is where Britton's experience as a high-school teacher (or is it her past life as a private investigator?) comes very useful![04:07] Introducing our next topic of escrow and title insurance with the Inaugural round of Question That Answer. Some Questions we cover are: Title Insurance, Title Insurance Companies, Escrow. As a side note - how Escrow is handled in California may vary from your state, and this show is for entertainment purposes![08:32] So, how many title insurance policies do we need? Do you have to have it if you are paying cash? What if we’re paying cash and don’t want a title insurance policy? What about if we are not using cash and are getting a loan from a bank instead?[10:23] Britton explains the difference between the lenders policy and the owner’s policy of title insurance. We’ve been talking about defects, liens, encumbrance and easements but what do these all mean and what are some examples? Britton shares the story of a San Francisco story (perhaps a true story) about a Glen Park home with a major easement for a utility company....Thank you for joining us for part 1 of this episode. We hope you enjoyed tuning in and don’t forget to join us again next week for part 2! See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
