Marni welcomes Dr. Harry Cohen to the Life Check Yourself studio where the duo delves into the practice of nurturing traits that make people naturally gravitate towards you. What are these virtues that attract people? Harry is an author, having most recently published the book, “ Be the Sun, Not the Salt''. In this episode, Marni and Harry discuss how to forgive your mistakes and move forward while practicing the authentic virtues that will bring out the best version of yourself and those around you. Are you ready to be the change you wish to see in the world? * How to embody virtuous behavior * Learn from history's greats * How to practice apologizing well How to Level up [13:41] Seek out and learn from people who exemplify the highest virtues and achievements. By understanding these positive energizers, you absorb their wisdom and integrate those practices into your own life. Those are exemplars. Those are the people who we intuitively and naturally are drawn to and want to be around. Knowledge Isn't Doing [20:01] Knowledge isn't enough; it's the application of that knowledge that matters. Act on the wisdom you acquired by performing brave and kind deeds. The Learning is by doing. You want to be brave, act bravely. That's Aristotle. Send the text, make the call, pick up the phone. Simplicity and Consistency [28:25] Consistency is inevitable for any kind of improvement in any aspect in our lives. Small, consistent actions can lead to significant improvements in our lives and relationships. It is by consistently practicing a certain behavior that they eventually become habits. You just practice. You step in it and then you go clean it off after you step in it. You have to make the error and then do the next right thing. That's part of it. Harry Cohen is a shrink, coach, husband, father, restaurateur, serial entrepreneur, speaker and author of "Be the Sun, Not the Salt." I was introduced to him when General Motor’s Chief Marketing Officer, Deborah Wahl came on the show. When she told me about the concept of Heliotropic Leadership, I was instantly fascinated and attracted to his idea like a moth to a flame or perhaps I should say, like a sunflower to the sun! I simply had to have him on the show! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Ron Lang. First Interview. May 20th, 2018Ron Lang Discusses:- His start in the sport when he went to the beach in 1954 to surf as teenager and couldn't surf due to the jelly fish in the ocean, and saw Richie Cooper and Harry Cohen from the Hollywood Y volleyball team playing beach volleyball, and played with them, how they were hard on him while teaching him the nuances of the game (which drove him nuts, but served him well!), playing in his first tournament in '56 with Dick Davis and beating the legendary team of Gene Selznick & Bernie Holtzman in the first round and realizing he could be successful in the sport with the right partner, how magical the sport was during that era when players played for bragging rights, how he developed his mindset to not be friends with his opponents, but rather beat their brains in, how amazing it was to have played alongside Gene Selznick, and Ron Von Hagen as partners, and what made each SO SPECIAL in their own way, the BEST team he ever competed against over his career, his recollection of the legendary '68 Manhattan Beach Open when he and Von Hagen battled Larry Rundle & Henry Bergman for 7 plus hours between the winners finals, and the finals played in the dark, how he became a legendary digger by watching his opponents during warm ups, and then positioning himself during games where he knew they liked to hit, the rivalry between Gene Selznick and Mike O'Hara on the beach, a classic story later on with a young Kent Steffes over dinner, what he's up to now days, what he's most proud of from his career, his thoughts on the new game and rules, and his amazing mind and strategy when it came to playing the game. "The more controversial something is-- or the more upset the audience was-- the more they talked about it, and the more people wanted to see what they were talking about."
